2013-2014 Annual Report - Rockwood Retirement Communities
2013-2014 Annual Report A sense of community... On behalf of your Board of Trustees, I bring greetings to the residents, staff and families of Rockwood Retirement Communities. We all, including the Board, do indeed have a “sense of community” for each other and for those around us. How do I know that? A quote from Anthony J. D’Angelo really goes to the heart of the matter: “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” When visiting the South Hill or Hawthorne campuses, I see this sense of caring first hand as I watch the loving, compassionate interactions between our staff and residents. It’s then that I am again reminded that the greatness of our community stems from our love and concern for each other. One of the ways that many of us express caring is through support of the Residents’ Foundation, as shown through volunteer work and donations for the “Stars We Honor” and “Neighbor for Neighbor” endowment drives. As a longstanding Spokane organization, Rockwood demonstrates its care for the greater Spokane community through its support of groups and events such as the Spokane Symphony, Christmas Tree Elegance, At the Core, Relay for Life and the Alzheimer’s Association. Residents, staff and Board members also enrich the Spokane community by financially supporting or volunteering for organizations such as, Meals on Wheels, Shalom Zone, Second Harvest Food Bank, SNAP, and Family Promise. A sense of community is created each day by Rockwood staff through their resident-centered care and the abundant ways we support residents to live independently and with vitality, both within our Rockwood community and beyond. It is with gratitude that I wish to recognize and say “good bye” to four of our truly caring staff who are retiring soon and who have been such a big part of Rockwood: Executive Director of Rockwood at Hawthorne, Jaak Juhkentaal (17 years); South Hill Director of Health and Wellness Services, Sylvia DeWaard (16 years); South Hill Administrative Assistant, Judy Smith (18 years); and South Hill Director of Social Services, Patty Thur (24 years). Thank you for your contributions to Rockwood! Thank you to all of you who, through an active and involved sense of community, make Rockwood Retirement Communities a wonderful place to live and to work. Greg Plummer Board Chair Board of Trustees John Barber Rev. Dale Cockrum Keith Gehr Maureen Green Jean Jalufka Dennis Kifer Bob McDonald Connie Milton Bill Moore Camilla Mounts Greg Plummer John Richards 2 Brent Stanyer Elizabeth Szombathy Our history of philanthropy goes back to our beginnings. Our dedication to serve extends to our residents, families, staff and our greater community. Throughout this Annual Report, we share the highlights of our service that enriches our communities. Not too long ago a resident at our South Hill Campus came up to me and asked me what I thought were the benefits of The Summit expansion. I proceeded to rattle off a well-rehearsed stream of wonderful amenities that would soon be available for all to enjoy, only to be cut off mid-sentence with her opinion on the matter. While acknowledging that what I had mentioned will surely be nice, she adamantly proclaimed that the very best part will be the approximate 100 new residents joining us. This is clearly a person who understands that the social benefits of living at Rockwood are one of its greatest strengths. Connecting with one another meets a very fundamental need we all have. Yes, some seem to need more of this than others, but where would any of us be without the opportunity to exchange a smile, to extend some compassion or to share a fond memory or two? True, the meals we eat each day provide the fuel we need to keep our bodies going, but what about the sustenance needed to keep the spirits high and to make one eager to greet a new day? Rockwood Retirement Communities provides a wonderful platform for social interaction to flourish. Much of this happens without staff involvement…our residents are a highly creative and imaginative group! But we also help the effort along with a myriad of activities and experiences thoughtfully provided to broaden the opportunities to connect. The way in which Rockwood residents and staff reach out to the broader Spokane community is another aspect of “sense of community” and one which makes me personally proud. In the pages that follow, you will read about a variety of endeavors that were undertaken to serve and benefit fellow Spokanites. Whether it be Hawthorne residents busily working to bring their second Quilt of Valor to completion or raising money for the Spokane Symphony to sustain this treasured community amenity for another year, it’s clear our residents see the benefit of giving of themselves in order to benefit the greater community. So, with completion of The Summit right around the proverbial corner, it is no small wonder that current South Hill residents are looking forward to having so many new residents; there are friends to be made and so many wonderful things to do together! But it is the belonging and commitment to a community that motivates us to connect and provides the richness in that phrase. Within our campuses, we strive to create a rich sense of community of which our residents proudly call home. The social fabric of interpersonal relationships are seen each day in the many ways staff and Honor Flight residents interact together for the good of Rockwood and the greater Spokane community. Through our social accountability efforts, we track volunteer services of residents and staff on and off our campus. In this fiscal year, Rockwood tracked 12,372 hours of volunteer service. Here are some highlights of our volunteer service we’d like to share. In September of 2013, the Spokane residents and service personnel gathered to celebrate one of our own heroes who was chosen for the Inland Northwest Honor Flight to travel to the WWII memorial in Washington, DC. Rockwood South Hill resident, Robert Munk, was greeted back home in Spokane by countless caring citizens and members of the military to thank him for his service to our country. With holiday spirit, Rockwood South Hill residents and staff formed a choir to go caroling floor to floor in The Ridge and to lead a huge caroling party at the Community Center. Rockwood at Hawthorne residents and staff do a similar event by caroling through the hallways of The Manor, bringing holiday cheer and sharing the compassion to the season to one and all! Christmastime in Spokane would not be complete without Christmas Tree Elegance (CTE) and the Holiday Pops concert performed by the Spokane Symphony. CTE is the largest fund raiser for the Spokane Symphony and the residents of Rockwood Retirement Communities’ Spokane Symphony Associates have sponsored a tree and designed a gift package for CTE for 11 years. In addition, the residents of Rockwood Retirement Communities Faithfully, the women of Stitch Clique gather every other week, to make warm hand crafted items that are donated to RSVP of Spokane County and The Wishing Star Foundation. Hats, mittens and scarves are given to homeless individuals and soft fleece blankets bring comfort to children during their hospital stay. Annually, this group makes over 200 items, and while their hands are busy working, they delight in the gift of friendship and knowing they are serving an important need in our community. 4 Spokane Symphony Holiday Pops When Feathers Flourish have underwritten the Holiday Pops concert for the Spokane community for 10 years. Through our residents’ on-going support of the Spokane Symphony, our community has been enriched by the talented musicians and musical culture that our orchestra provides. The Rockwood Elves stay busy most of the year making handmade wooden toys that are donated to Volunteers of America to be given to homeless children or foster youth as Christmas gifts. This dedicated group of men and women meet weekly to lovingly build more than 100 items. Race for the Cure and Relay for Life are two cancer awareness events in which the Rockwood staff actively participate. Team Relay for Life Tutu’s and Tata’s and Team Happy Feet helped to rally our community to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. Yannick Droogmans agreed to shave his head when we met our team fundraising goals! In May of 2014, “Where Feathers Flourish” highlighted the “wild side” of Rockwood South Hill. Our 90 acre, park-like campus is home to 398 residents, as well as deer, turkey, owls, song birds, marmots, coyotes, moose, ducks, squirrels, chipmunks, and a wide variety of vegetation. Residents hosted and participated in a daylong event that taught them how to co-exist with the animals, to identify the variety of plants and trees on campus, and how to be good stewards of our environment with recycling and worm composting. The event even included a visit from a real wolf, and a Quilts of Valor great horned owl! Partnering with Physical Therapy Associates, Rockwood South Hill residents and staff stepped up to both financially and physically help hungry school children. Through At The Core, the hungriest children at neighboring Lincoln Height Elementary receive discreetly placed packs of food in their backpacks, to sustain them over the weekends. Rockwood has committed to helping 32 children for the 2014-2015 school year by sponsoring and delivering food packs to the school each Thursday. We feel good knowing that our youngest neighbors are getting some help from us which helps them to do better in school. In May of 2014, the residents and staff at Rockwood at Hawthorne completed their second quilt for The Quilts of Valor. This group meets quarterly to work on a quilt. This group lovingly uses their talent to make quilts that are given to combat service members and veterans to provide comfort and healing. 5 The Summit at Rockwood South Hill For over 6 years, Rockwood Retirement Communities has been in the planning phase of a new and innovative approach to retirement living. The efforts of this planning came to fruition in March of 2014, when we broke ground on The Summit; Rockwood South Hill’s new 11-story apartment tower that will open in 2016. This centrally located tower will provide all residents a myriad of new amenities and an exciting range of expanded services. With the opening of The Summit growing near, we are busy planning for a new level of services and amenities at our South Hill campus and the addition of approximately 100 new residents. The traditional main dining area will be replaced with multiple, restaurant-style venues that include a casual café and coffee shop, a lively bistro with display kitchen, a bar and lounge, and a more formal signature dining area. We will also expand to have outdoor dining venues and the 11th floor Skyview Lounge that will be great places to socialize with friends and family while enjoying a sweeping view. Supporting residents physically, mentally and creatively will happen in our expanded Library with fireplace, the theater and educational center, a dedicated art studio and our expanded exercise area which includes a large group fitness room, state-ofthe-art Fitness Center and combined spa and salon. Our residents will not only feel good, but they will look great too! The Event Center will expand the South Hill campus’s ability to host large gatherings for special dinners, entertainment, and community activities and will include state-of-the-art audio and video capabilities. The Event Center will open to an outdoor plaza that overlooks a waterfall and pond area, creating a lovely connection to our outdoor surroundings. It will truly be a new perspective on retirement community living. 6 Appleway Court Appleway Court has become a welcoming place for area seniors to live safely, comfortably and to engage in social, educational and recreational activities right where they live. On June 6, 2014, Rockwood celebrated the Grand Opening of Appleway Court Phase II. With Phase II completed, the 3 story building adds 24 additional units, for a total of 62 affordable senior apartments in Spokane Valley. As you enter Appleway Court II, there are several colorful raised planting beds on the patio which are wheelchair accessible and each is equipped with a water connection for ease of use. The planters offer residents a great way to get outside to dig in the dirt and to provide residents fresh flowers, vegetables and fruits during the spring and summer months. The Community Room is a beautiful open gathering space with a wonderful large kitchen which the Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels program uses for Silver Cafe lunch service. Residents have also made the most of this new space for resident-led exercise classes 3 times a week, bible study, bingo, potlucks, karaoke, regular gatherings to watch sports and many parties or holiday celebrations. Heather Buckley is the Community Manager and says that when she gives a tour, the current residents say to potenial residents, “Come join us and be one of Heather’s 62 Grandmothers and Grandfathers!” Introducing Dan DeBoise We are pleased to announce Dan DeBoise as our new Executive Director of Health and Wellness Services for Rockwood South Hill. The Foundation raises and stewards donations for projects that enhance the lives of our residents. Foundation grants enhance our surroundings and wellness programming, assist residents who have outlived their funds, and honor our friends, neighbors and Rockwood staff. With your generous donations, we are investing in a bright future for us all! The Foundation’s goals June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014 were to focus on the Residents’ Assistance funds, increase planned gifts, discuss the feasibility of a memory care unit at Hawthorne, create a staff scholarship fund at Hawthorne and to continue the Community Benefit Fund for unrestricted gifts. The list of accomplishments is too long to include in this letter. A few of the highlights are: • $319,829 was raised through events and individual donations • $87,800 was received in bequests • Four new planned gifts and four IRA roll-over gifts were added The Foundation’s direct impact for our residents: • We established the Rockwood at Hawthorne Scholarship and Education Fund for staff • A feasibility study was conducted regarding a memory care unit at Hawthorne and findings were passed on to management for consideration • $69,500 was granted to the Wellness programming • $292,611 was granted to South Hill residents in need and $9,104 to Hawthorne for a one-month Medicaid shortfall • At Hawthorne, we purchased a NuStep exercise equipment, a piano, roses for the Rose Garden, and two iPads for residents in Health Care • $775 was granted and $3100 was pledged to the South Hill Ridge Resident Council • Two staff members were granted support through the Employee Assistance Funds The Foundation also: • Revised the Foundation’s By-Laws • Established an Investment Advisory Committee • Established a 4% spending limit on all endowed funds within the Foundation • Employed Vanguard to manage Foundation funds • Conducted focus groups to determine the feasibility for a South Hill Enhancement Campaign • Planned the launch of the $1,000,000 Neighbor for Neighbor Endowment Drive for Resident Assistance at Rockwood South Hill What a year!
