ninety 2 01 1 O A K LA ND F A M ILY S E RVI CE S AN N UAL RE P ORT INTRODUCTION 2 1921 1933 Michigan Children’s Aid Society (Pontiac Branch) founded, offering foster care and adoption services; taking care of orphaned, homeless, abused and neglected children. Royal Oak Family Services was founded primarily to provide financial resources to families as a supplement to public resources. Would later be known as Family Services Association of Southern Oakland County. A legacy of service... a future of success. What is it about an organization that enables it to achieve 90 years of service and continue to experience growth, recognition and success? Through nine decades, Oakland Family Services has responded to the issues confronting individuals and families in our community with effective programs that bring about meaningful change. In its early days, the agency focused on protecting homeless children and assisting families with food, clothing and financial resources. As families were profoundly impacted by the war and postwar years, the agency expanded to deliver family counseling services. Today, Oakland Family Services touched the lives of more than 12,000 families, comprised of approximately 35,000 individuals annually. Our continuum of exceptional programs served infants to mature adults in 2011. Staff helped prepare children to succeed in school; provided safe homes to abused children; assisted individuals on the path to recovery from depression, anxiety and addiction; and helped older adults reconnect with the joy in life. A key to the success and longevity of Oakland Family Services has been its continuing tradition of attracting a dedicated Board of Directors, compassionate donors, generous volunteers, and highly skilled staff. In this annual report, you will read about the accomplishments of 2011 and how our programs have strengthened families and individuals. These pages honor all who have made this work possible in moving our clients toward self-sufficiency and helping them to become healthy, productive and contributing members of our community. Today, we truly stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us to carry on the legacy of changing lives and building brighter futures. With deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks, Michael S. Earl Daniel J. Pienta President & CEO Chairman, Board of Directors 4 ACCOMPLISHMENTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1946 1950 The Family Service Center for Pontiac, Bloomfield and Birmingham formed as an outgrowth of services at Christ Church Cranbrook. Power of Mentoring Showcase Award Oakland Family Services was the recipient of the Power of Mentoring Showcase Award from the National Alliance for Children and Families’ New Age of Aging Mentoring Initiative. The agency was recognized for effectively promoting independence and dignity for older adults by creating a sustained change in the human service industry through its mentoring of the Family Service Madison, Inc., of Madison, Wisconsin. The award was bestowed upon Micheline Sommers, Director of Older Adult Specialty Services at Oakland Family Services, at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Ms. Sommers is a specialist in the area of gerontology and advocates for the needs of older adults and their caregivers by participating in multiple community positions. Oakland Family Services was funded for 12 months by the National Alliance for Children and Families to share our staff’s expertise in meeting the needs of older adults with staff at Family Service Madison, an organization interested in preparing for the rapidly increasing population of older adults. Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces National Standard Award In 2011, Oakland Family Services was recognized as a Top Workplaces National Standard company by the Detroit Free Press. Oakland Family Services has been addressing the needs of older adults for more than 50 years. Today, the agency offers outreach and in-home treatment and case management to isolated, homebound older adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues, as well as services to older adults and their caregivers in nursing and assisted care facilities, the community and on site. Last year, nearly 3,000 older adults and their caregivers were served, impacting more Employees want to be part of something meaningful. They want to contribute and give their best. PROGRAMS & SERVICES 8 PROGRAMS & SERVICES Over the past nine decades, Oakland Family Services’ programs have responded to the evolving needs in the community. In earlier decades, staff and volunteers responded to issues facing individuals and families, including “homeless children,” financial concerns, “juvenile delinquency, ” “family breakdown,” “the problems of aging” and mental health. Today, Oakland Family Services offers a continuum of services that span the human life cycle to enrich the lives of children, strengthen families and rebuild lives. While some of the vernacular has changed, the kinds of issues facing individuals and families have persisted, affirming that Oakland Family Services is a cornerstone of the community. Examples of the impact Oakland Family Services’ innovative programs had in our community in 2011 are: •Nearly 1,200 children and their families will have brighter futures through culturally sensitive programs that enhance parenting skills, strengthen family relationships, and help children enter school ready to succeed. Judge Arthur E. Moore, an agency board member in 1946 and 1947 and Juvenile Court judge, was an early advocate of services to prevent and effectively intervene in adolescent behavioral issues, particularly those leading to trouble with the law. •129 children were provided with safe and loving homes, whether placed with an adoptive family or reunified with their parents. •More than 750 parents and relative or licensed child caregivers attended trainings to provide children with more experiences that foster learning and development, helping children enter school with the skills they need to be successful. •Nearly 300 youths with serious emotional disturbances, and their families, learned skills to manage emotions and behaviors, so that children are able to achieve their goals at home, school and with friends. •More than 6,000 people were helped to overcome issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, substance abuse and troubled interpersonal relationships, improving social, family and work functioning. •Nearly 2,500 isolated, homebound older adults received outreach services and/or home-based counseling to help alleviate depression and other issues related to aging. •Almost 400 caregivers were provided with education on maximizing the quality of life of older adults. 1982 1983 Started Employee Assistance Services to reach more families through the work place. Contracted by General Motors through Family Service America to provide predetermination coordination to substance-abusing employees and their families. Today, our work with adolescents benefits from the advanced understanding of child and adolescent development and family dynamics. Gary Solanskey (left) supervises our Adolescent program, which helps youth learn to make healthy choices leading to brighter futures. 1010 PROGRAMS & SERVICES INTRODUCTION 1984 1985 Expanded Employee Assistance Services by entering into an agreement to market for Family Service America member agencies in the tri-county area. SUCCESSES “I love the way my child is learning at the APEX program. Since participating in the program, she has learned to write her first and last name. Her teachers are excellent and my child adores them. I would highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to put their children in a preschool program.” APEX Parent (Below) Letty Tovar-McCloud, Family Service Specialist, works with Oakland Family Services preschoolers. “The Early On program has truly been beneficial for my son. The strides he has made in his speech over the past year are tremendous. My husband and I truly appreciate the one-on-one time spent with the children. The additional at-home activities are an added bonus. We feel very fortunate to have had this program available to us. Thanks so much!” Early On Parent “Being in this program has helped me talk and open up about my issues, and learn healthy coping skills. I have been drug-free and am making better choices which has made me a better mom.” PRISM Participant “My deep thanks for the professional help and for the fact that an organization like Oakland Family Services exists. I can stand on my own feet and I am not afraid to wake every morning. I feel like a human being. I was so scared and tentative about my life. My therapist got me through so much and I realize this every day as my life gets more real and true. A thousand times thanks.” Behavioral Health Participant “My granddaughter was emotionally unstable when I took custody of her. With the Specialized Services for Youth program, we were very successful at turning her behavior around. We worked as a team, so that I felt that I wasn’t alone in the process. My granddaughter has come so far in the last six months, it is truly unbelievable!! She is being mainstreamed back into regular school. Thanks to your staff. Thank you.” Specialized Services for Youth Grandparent “The Early Learning Communities classes have been a sheer blessing for me. I have learned so many creative ideas to use with my child. It has provided me with many different learning tools I never knew existed. I very highly recommend every parent and/or caregiver take these trainings. I am a better mother and teacher because of it.” Early Learning Communities Participant 14 THANK YOU, STAFF 1989 1990 Newly renovated Pontiac building occupied; the Family Center on Franklin Boulevard, administrative offices and therapy offices, formerly housed in United Way building, join each other in the new Pontiac facility.
