Gavita. The most powerful lighting on the market www.gavita-holland.com Gavita. The most powerful lighting on the market The front runner in lighting development Gavita is the oldest specialised horticultural lighting company, building on 30 years of accumulated knowledge and innovation. In 1994 Gavita introduced their first professional GAN fixtures to the Dutch market. Since then Gavita innovations have become industry standards. Gavita Nederland introduced for example the 600W HPS lamp in 1995, the famous internal reflector lamp in 1998, Miro aluminium reflectors in 2002, the first (adjustable) professional electronic ballasts in 2003 and recently in 2010 their solid state Light Emitting Plasma fixture. For greenhouses and indoor facilities we design lighting plans using high-tech computer models. Our testing facility uses the state-of-the-art Ulbricht integrating sphere for accurate light measurements. Gavita tests and implements new technology, such as plasma light and high frequency electronic ballasts. Our innovative reflector designs offer the highest efficiency in the market. Gavita has developed into one of the leading authorities in the area of assimilation lighting. Based in the Netherlands, Gavita 2 Nederland serves customers world-wide and our installations range from 1 - 40.000 units per customer. As a development partner of Philips, General Electric and Osram, Gavita designs and produces state of the art electronic ballasts, high efficiency reflectors and complete fixtures. The key values of Gavita are customer service and product excellence. Always in the forefront of technology Gavita is synonymous for innovation, quality and customer satisfaction. Gavita comprises several companies and joint ventures in Norway, The Netherlands, Canada and the Ukraine. With over 40.000 acres of greenhouses The Netherlands is the greenhouse capital of the world. More than 60% of all flowers world-wide are auctioned in The Netherlands at Flora Holland, the third largest building in the world, 7 times the floor space of the Pentagon. Also fruits and vegetables are big export products, mostly grown in greenhouses using assimilation lighting: In 2009 The Netherlands exported more tomatoes than top producing countries Mexico and Spain. www.gavita-holland.com Gavita Holland bv In 2009 Gavita Nederland entered the hobby/hydroponics market as Gavita Holland bv, offering a selection of adapted professional fixtures and a series of new products specifically aimed at the hobby indoor grower. Gavita Holland maintains the same high professional standards for this market, in product quality as well as customer service. The products you find in this catalogue are either based on our professional proven horticultural products (the Pro line) or developed specifically for this market. Finally you can use professional products that were not available before to the hobby market. Not only do we bring professional products to the market, we also bring our accumulated knowledge with it. We organise lighting seminars, product demonstration, e-learning and support local initiatives and organisations that work towards a sustainable approach to gardening. Gavita Holland serves the market through a professional world-wide network of committed distributors. Lumens are for humans Gavita Pro lighting fixtures have a higher output than any other HID lighting product in this market. That’s 15 to 20% more light for your money, every day you use it, 365 days a year. It’s all about Photons Photosynthetic Photon Flux Many lamp manufacturers still specify the output of their lamps (illuminance) in lumens, though this just specifies how we humans perceive the intensity of that light. Our eyes are most sensitive to green light of 555nm, but plants are sensitive to a much broader spectrum. So what is the right way to specify horticultural lamps and how can you calculate with that? Scientists discovered long ago that there is a relationship between the number of photons and photosynthesis: It takes about 8 - 10 photons to bind one CO2 molecule. They also discovered that there is only little difference in the effectiveness of blue or red light. So they defined a direct relationship between the number of photons in the PAR spectrum and the photosynthetic potential of that light. PAR spectrum For many years now professional researchers have used photon counts in the PAR spectrum as a standard and the greenhouse industry followed very quickly. European horticultural lamp manufacturers specify the output of their lamps in PAR photons per second. This is called Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF) and is expressed in micromoles per second (μmol/s). This is the accepted professional industry standard now. Plants primarily use the light ranging from 400-700nm bandwidth (violet to far red). The light within this spectrum is called Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). So the spectrum of the light that plants are sensitive to is much broader than what we see. Using lumens, which are measured according to what the eye is sensitive to, is therefore not a correct representation of the grow light properties of a lamp. Calculating with micromoles If you know the output of a lamp you can calculate how many photons will reach your crop based on the lit surface and your reflector efficiency. The more photons the more potential photosynthesis. For example, if your luminaire outputs 2000 μmol/s and you spread that light over a 2m2 surface the average irradiation on that surface will be 1000 μmol/m2/s. This is what we call Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD). In practice it is a bit more complicated as you have to calculate reflector losses and you have losses from wall reflection, but it gives you a much better indication than using lux and lumens. For more information about Photosynthetic Photon Flux please visit our website www.gavita-holland.com where you will find more examples and in-depth explanation. 3 Pro line Gavita Pro 600 SE EU Features and benefits Only for use with 600W 400V EL lamps – No acoustic resonance – Up to 8% more grow light than standard GreenPower lamp – Light maintenance after 5000hrs >95% System design and concept by Gavita Electronics by PHILIPS Diagnosis LED Sealed housing (Class I) with Gore-Tex ventilation plug Microprocessor driven Very low heat dissipation and optimal cooling Driver efficiency at full power 95-96% CE approved Technical Specifications Dimensions: 22,3”/567mm x 9,4”/240mm x 7,5”/191mm (LxWxH) Mains connector: IEC C14, power cable 3m with Schuko 230V plug (different EU versions available) Ambient Temp: 32-95 °F / 0-35 °C Mains: 220V-240V (± 10%) Frequency: 50-60Hz Gavita Pro 600 SE Complete Fixture The Gavita Pro 600 SE is part of the Gavita Pro-line series, offering you the latest technology in a series of rugged, professional state of the art fixtures, reflectors and electronic ballasts. The Gavita HortiStar 600 SE (single ended) does just that: It has one of the most efficient reflectors in the market with an efficiency of 96%. It is our most popular 600/750W horticultural reflector. Using a professional quality reflector has suddenly become very affordable. Dimensions: Lamp Holder: Reflector: Cable Gland: Lamp Cord: In horticulture we see that reflectors lose on average more than 5% of their efficiency per year due to deposits, dust and oxidation. That is valuable light that will not reach your crop. As tests have shown it is almost impossible to clean reflective material without damage, it is important that you use reflectors that are made of the best materials and, if needed, can be replaced. The Gavita HortiStar 600 reflector fixture comes with a replaceable Miro aluminum reflector that can be replaced with the lamp still in the lampholder. The fixture is suitable for HPS/MH lamps up to 750W. The lamp cord terminal is shielded by a metal housing. Depending on your application and ballast you can order the HortiStar optionally with a lamp cord of choice to match your ballast output, enabling plug-and-play installation. 8 www.gavita-holland.com 20,1”/511mm x 9,6”/244mm x 7,6”/193mm (LxWxH) E40 Gavita HortiStar HR 96 600 SE Miro aluminium reflector M20 Optional (4m with IEC or Wieland plug) Pro line Gavita HortiStar 1000 DE EU Features and benefits Horticultural design HortiStar HR 96 1000 DE reflector Reflector efficiency 96% Easily replaceable reflector Shielded cord terminal For double ended 1000W lamps Gavita HortiStar 1000 DE EU Remote Reflector One of the best 1000W HPS lamps in the market is the double ended Philips GreenPower Plus 1000W 400V EL lamp. Though one can grow successful under HPS alone, or a combination of HPS and MH, it is still not the full spectrum our sun delivers. The Gavita Pro 300 LEP produces light with a spectrum similar to that of the sun. Plants have evolved under sunlight over millions of years. University studies have shown that seedlings and cuttings grown under full spectrum plasma light develop much better than under HPS or CFL light and produce more lateral branches. The dry matter increases up to 30% and the plant structure is more even and better distributed compared to HPS. It brings your plant into the best conditions for generative development. Depending on your crop you can either use only the plasma light or a combination of plasma light and HPS for plants that thrive on red light for generative development. 10 The Gavita Pro 300 LEP is a solid state horticultural plasma light fixture. There are no moving parts in the fully sealed housing, improving the reliability. The light source is a LUXIM STA 41.02 LiFi module which has a rated average life of 30.000 hours. The glass wide spectrum filter allows for low quantities UVB light to pass while shielding you and your crop from UVC. The Miro aluminum reflector generates an even square light pattern. The absence of heat radiation in the light allows you to hang the lamp close to your crop, or to add the light without adding extra heat radiation to your crop. The Gavita Pro 300 LEP is available as a solid state closed fixture, or in an air cooled (AC) version which requires forced cooling. The AC version is installed in a 150mm pipe, enabling easy installation of flexible ducting. www.gavita-holland.com Specifications Input Voltage: Input Current: Input Power: Input Frequency: Electrical Insulation: Input Connection: Dimensions: Weight: Operating Temp. They are manufactured using the highest quality components needed for the high output frequency. The result is a very cool digital ballast with optimal output specifications, absence of acoustic resonance with suitable lamps and a very long life. Output can be boosted up +10%. Digital ballasts have a lot of advantages over traditional magnetic ballasts: They are more efficient, adjustable, generate much less heat and provide a stable output regardless of the input voltage. Using a magnetic ballast you will lose light when your mains voltage is less than optimal. To build a stable digital ballast you need high quality components. This is especially the case if you want to reach the high frequencies required to prevent acoustic resonance in your arc tube, which can lead to premature lamp failure. DigiStar ballasts are built using the highest quality components. This results in a ballast that outputs a very high frequency (preventing acoustic resonance) but also a very cool ballast. 12 The DigiStar is cooler and performs at a much higher frequency than comparable A-brand ballasts. The DigiStars are adjustable over a wide output range, enabling you to dim or boost your lamp. With 10% boost on the 400 and 600W models you are guaranteed to generate the highest output available. To ensure a long lamp life we have built in soft-dim. When you adjust your output it takes 60 seconds to gradually dim or boost per step. This process is so gradual that your eyes won’t even see the difference. Multiple output power enables you to use different lamps with a single ballast: The 400W model can be used for 250W and 400W lamps, the 600W model for 400 and 600W lamps. The internal microprocessor ensures the highest possible output in any circumstance. www.gavita-holland.com Features and benefits Available in 400 and 600W Adjustable: – 400W model: 250/275/400/440W – 600W model: 300/400/600/660W High frequency electronics Microprocessor controlled Soft dim (60 seconds per step) Sealed housing Driver efficiency at full power 95-96% 4m lamp cord and connector 5 kV approved (optional) CE approved Specifications DigiStar 400 Specifications DigiStar 600 Input Voltage: Input Power - 400W: Input Current - 400W: Input Power - 440W: Input Current - 440W: Power Factor: THD: Input Frequency: Tc (case) max: Ta (ambient): Adjustable: Output Connector: Input Voltage: Input Power - 600W: Input Current - 600W: Input Power - 660W: Input Current - 660W: Power Factor: THD: Input Frequency: Tc (case) max: Ta (ambient): Adjustable: Output Connector: 220V-240V (± 10%) 430W @ 230V 1,87A @ 230V 468W @ 230V 2,04A @ 230V >0,99 <10% 50/60Hz 75°C/167ºF 0-40°C/32-104ºF 250/275/400/440W IEC C13 220V - 240V (± 10%) 645W @ 230V 2,81A @ 230V 705W @ 230V 3,07A @ 230V >0,99 <10% 50/60Hz 75°C/167ºF 0-40°C/32-104ºF 300/400/600/660W IEC C13 13 Gavita TripleStar 600 EU Features and benefits Compact, rugged, stable and safe Adjustable reflectors: deep, medium, wide positions Symmetric / asymmetric light adjustment Efficiency >90% in every position Replaceable Miro aluminum reflector plates For MH/HPS lights up to 750W Shielded terminals Eye bolts enable easy installation Lamp cord (optional) Gavita TripleStar 600 The TripleStar 600 can be adjusted to 3 different positions: Wide, medium or deep. You can hang your reflector high above your plants in the deep position for better climate control or close and wide in tight spaces. For every position the uniformity of the light is better than 90%. In set-ups with more reflectors you can adjust them asymmetrically: Wide in the middle for more overlap and better uniformity and deep at the sides to direct the light down, away from the wall. The TripleStar is a very compact and versatile reflector creating a better and more even light distribution in any situation. The three Miro Aluminum reflector plates are replaceable, so you never have to replace your complete reflector again. We recommend to change reflector plates every year. The lamp cord terminal is shielded by a metal housing. Why does the Gavita Pro 1000 DE use a double ended lamp? There are many reasons why you should use electronic ballasts. First of all they are more efficient, produce less heat, are completely silent and have protection circuitry built in. So they are very safe to use. But more important is how they work with varying supply voltages. Your 230/240V from the wall socket can vary substantially. It can be higher but often it is lower than the specified voltage. This can be caused by long supply lines, industry in the neighborhood, or high demand on electricity, etc. A magnetic ballast will have a reduced output when the input voltage is lower than specified. An electronic ballast always adjusts itself to an optimal output, regardless of the voltage that is supplied (within some limits of course). An electronic ballast will adjust the output to the lamp during its lifetime. It has a soft start which puts less stress on a lamp when starting it up. Many electronic ballasts are adjustable, so you can adjust your output based on the climate circumstances, such as hot summers, or the age of your crop. The Philips GreenPower Plus 400V 1000W EL lamp is a very special lamp. If you compare it to other 1000W lamps you will already see that the arc tube is quite small in comparison. Also you will see it is exactly in the middle of the lamp, and there is no wire frame in the lamp (which actually intercepts some of the light). The glass is not normal glass, but high quality quartz glass. Everything in the design of this lamp is for better optical properties. By having no wire frame you don’t have anything blocking the light, the double ended mounting assures perfect positioning within the focal point of the reflector and of course the quartz glass is very clear and very high quality. Why do we use it? It is the brightest lamp in the market with the best optical properties. What are 400 Volt lamps? We know, it’s confusing. In horticulture we use 400 Volt electrical installation instead of 230/240 Volt you have at home. Specifically for these higher voltage installations we develop professional ballasts and lamps that run more efficiently at a higher voltage. So the professional “400 Volt” lamps can not be used on a standard 230V ballast. The Gavita Pro ballasts however have a 230 Volt input circuit but power the efficient 400 Volt lamps. So finally you can use the efficient horticultural lamps in a 230/240 fixture. 18 www.gavita-holland.com Why do you specify your lamps in micromoles and not lumens? Lumens are for humans. Plants use a different spectrum. Scientists found out that using micromoles is the best way to indicate the photosynthetic potential of a lamp. Therefore every horticultural lamp manufacturer specifies the output of their lamps in micromoles. Lamps that are produced for general lighting are specified in Lumens, according to the sensitivity curve of the human eye. Why should I replace my reflector periodically? Why are the Gavita HortiStar reflectors so small? Gavita reflectors work on a different principle than the common wings and large reflectors. You get two sources of light from our reflectors: the direct light from a lamp (about 1/3 of the light) and the reflected light from the reflector (about 2/3 of the light). The further you go from a lamp the lower the light levels. So right under the lamp normally the intensity is highest. The reflector should be able to compensate the lower light levels at the edges of the throw of the lamp. The Gavita HortiStar reflectors do that by reflecting the light to the other side instead of reflecting it downward. This enables us to create a smaller reflector which is still very efficient and has a very uniform light pattern. The reflective material is made from high quality Miro Aluminum. The total reflector efficiency is 96%, which means that if the lamp outputs 1000 μmol/s a total of 960 μmol/s is delivered to your crop. Reflectors get dirty and unfortunately cleaning them does more harm than good to a Miro aluminum reflector. Dust, dirt and deposits depreciate the reflector efficiency by as much as 5% per year. So why would you only change a lamp when 2/3 of the light that comes from your fixture is reflected light? Replacing your reflector is the cheapest way to get more light on your crop. If you want to clean it then do it very carefully with only a soft cloth. Never use detergents, some vinegar might work for calcium spots, but rinse with distilled water after that to prevent spots. NEVER polish a reflector, you will scratch the surface. But in any case: a cleaned reflector will never be as efficient as a new one. 19 Gavita Holland bv Oosteinderweg 127 1432 AH Aalsmeer The Netherlands T +31 297-380450 F +31 297-380451 I www.gavita-holland.com E info@gavita-holland.com
