Dear Parents and Community Members
2017 Planning
It is that time of year again when we start looking towards the 2017
school year and beyond, especially at class structures, budgets and subject offerings. To
make the best decisions around the items mentioned it is very important to have a clear
understanding of student numbers for the coming year. Therefore I ask that if any families
know that their children will not be at Karoonda in 2017 or people know of students who
will be moving into the area please fill in the form at the back of this week’s newsletter or
let the Front Office know as soon as possible. Once we have a clear knowledge of student
numbers we will then be consulting with parents about possible classes for 2017.
Royal Adelaide Show Results
Last week saw another very successful Royal Adelaide Show for the
Karoonda Area School Show Program. Aside from the teamwork,
communication and leadership skills that the students develop we were
also very successful in the three categories (sheep, steers, goats) we
competed in. I promised I would allow Mrs Johnson the honour of
sharing all of the outstanding results with the community through the
newsletter next week, so I won’t give it away now, but I am sure many
of you have heard the great results we achieved. These results just like
the choir are the result of months of work in the lead up to the judging on
Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Carolyn Johnson, all of the
students and the supporting staff and parents need to be congratulated on
the incredible time and effort they have put into gain the results they
achieved. The commitment to the weekly lunch time sessions with the
animals, the feed rosters during school term and holiday times have all
contributed to the success and definitely do not go unrecognised, so once again
congratulations KAS Ag Team.
A huge thank you must also go to all of the breeders, sponsors and families for their
ongoing support of the program. Look out for a comprehensive round up of results in next
week’s newsletter, once all of the results are in.

Adelaide Festival of Music
This coming Friday, 16th of September the choir students, Sue Muster
and families will be enjoying a night at the Festival Theatre for the
annual Festival of Music. It is always a great night for the students
involved, their parents, Sue, Jaslyn and I as we all see the hard work
and dedication all come together on the night. To put this into
perspective the students have to master over 1900 words of song and approximately 300
choreography moves in the lead up to the performance this Friday night. Parents, staff and
family attending please look out for me in the foyer, I will be selling programs for $3 prior
to the performance in support of the Festival of Music. Look forward to seeing you all
there.
Rick Persse visiting
Tomorrow we have the pleasure of welcoming the Education
Departments newly appointed Chief Executive visiting the school from
10:00 am until 11:00 am prior to the Country Cabinet Morning Tea at
the Clubrooms from 11:00 am. It is a pleasure to welcome Mr Persse to the school and
show him firsthand how good our school is.
In May last year former Karoonda Area School teacher,
Sandy Loffler, was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Sadly she passed away in Loxton last Friday.
In 1985, Sandy was appointed as Karoonda’s first
Agricultural Studies teacher. With support from the
Agricultural Advisory Committee, she accomplished a great deal during her 3 years in this
role. After moving to the Riverland, she continued teaching this subject at Loxton High,
until retiring about 3 years ago. She is remembered as a very hardworking, enthusiastic
and dedicated teacher.

Reception/Year One Update
Written by Julie & Katelyn Boughen
Thank you to Mr Mitch Vanson for capably relief teaching for Miss Boughen
last week. The R/1students and staff all enjoyed our week and the students
were generally engaged in their studies and also behaved well. We hoped
that all the Fathers etc enjoyed their children’s words about them inside
their Father’s Day card and playing their game, Don’t Eat Dad!
We had a busy four day week in which we completed our Look! Listen! Science
topic. Mr Vanson introduced a new minor game to us and we also continued
developing our soccer skills during P.E. We continued to study special places and
how to care for them in our Geography lesson and we each designed an iPad app
button during Digital Technology. We brainstormed what being healthy means
and only needed reminding about the relationship/ emotions/safety factors vital to our
health. During Health Mrs Boughen read aloud some books based on healthy messages and
we had to listen carefully and see if we could find the message in the storyline of each book.
During library lesson Mrs Keough read us some stories about honesty and we talked about the
importance of being honest.
We are all looking forward to our excursion to Renmark tomorrow. Read all about it next
week!

R U OK? Day
On Thursday, both Zara and myself, made KAS aware of R U OK
day? (As you can see by the picture.) We highlighted the fact
that a conversation could change a life and make their day
much better. If the person is not ready to have a chat then,
check in with them later. Remembering not to make any
judgement, just listen and don’t rush the conversation. And for
the My Tern language - It’s ok to be on the red road, just as long
as you are in control.
It’s ok to say, ‘I’m not ok’.
Just remember the 4 steps:
1. Ask R U OK? – be relaxed and friendly with your approach
2. Listen without judgement – Don’t rush the conversation
and take what they say seriously
3. Encourage action – ask them how they would like you to
support them through this
4. Follow up – Check in with them in a few days’ time
‘It is R U OK day, today, tomorrow
and every day!’

Karoonda Area School Choir News
This Friday night nine of our choir students will be performing in a
concert at the Festival Theatre Adelaide at the SA Primary Schools Music
Festival. The students are:
Tarryn Turner, Ethan Porker, Erin O’Malley, Tess Huxtable,
Taylor Vandenberg, Erin Pope, Lily Wood, Emily Kerr and Abigail Porker.
The concert will have choir students from schools all over South Australia who have been
practising very hard all year for this event. The repertoire consists of 15 songs including
several familiar songs such as Que Sera by the Hip-Hop/Dance music group Justice Crew, and
Jai Ho from the motion picture Slumdog Millionaire. Each year a composer is asked to create a
song cycle based on a theme and the 2016 song cycle is Mission Possible which is about
sustainability and was written by SA composers Robyn Habel and Glynn Lehmann. As well as
learning the songs the choir students also learn choreography for several songs and some
Auslan signing. Best wishes to the students – and ‘break a leg’!

Karoonda Districts Cricket Club News
The 2016-2017 Cricket Season begins in October (program has not been finalised as yet).
Karoonda have nominated three teams – 1 x A Grade, 1 x C Grade and 1 x Under 15.
Under 15s - Come Have a Go!
For this upcoming season, the Murray Towns Cricket Association (MTCA) has
decided that the Under 15s will be a 9-a-side competition (9 players boys or
girls) and playing for 40 overs. Karoonda did vote against this however to no
avail.
If your child is interested in playing Under 15s this season, please come along to the School
Oval this Thursday 15th September from 4:30 pm and Have-A-Go. Age limit is players must be 11 years of age as of 1st October 2016 (depending on numbers).
Two New Junior Formats – Under 11s and Under 13s


Under 11s
The Under 11s competition will be a T20 Blast which will take over from the Milo Cricket.
This will run for 10 weeks after school in Murray Bridge (day and time to be advised) for
12 weeks beginning late October (nothing over school holidays). This competition will be
completely run by SACA and they will supply everything eg coaches, equipment etc.
Parents will have to organise their transport to and from Murray Bridge.
Under 13s
MTCA are also looking at an Under 13 competition of 9 players which will be run on
Friday nights in a 20 over game played at home and away venues starting at 5:30 pm.
These details are still being finalised.
Karoonda are able to nominate a team in each of these age groups but it
would be up to parents to transport their children to matches. If any parents
would like their child/ren (boy or girl) to be involved, please give Ryan Paech a
call on 0427 524 800 as soon as possible as MTCA need to notified this week.
