A Message From Our President:
I hope the spring weather makes you as happy as me. But
for some, like Donna, the trees and flowers bring on allergies and asthma. The spring rains have been great to
keep the air clean and offset the drought.
Tweety Bird has been out and about a few times recently.
It's about time to take off the top and get that open air feeling.
WOW! We have two more new members, Joe Colvard and
Ken Huckaby, who joined us for the April meeting in
Oakdale. Ken has a really nice red 55 T-bird and both have
a keen interest in our cars. Joe is Ken’s son-in-law and
both love T-Birds. Our website and publicity efforts help
increase our club membership.
After our meeting we held an impromptu car session in the
parking lot with a hoods up checking details of the cars. It
was a nice T-bird turnout. I really enjoy all the car talk and
picking up technical hints.
It was great to hear that Galen is doing well and Keith's
surgery and recovery are also going well.
April marks the beginning of car shows with many of us
having our T-Birds on display. If you are attending and
showing your car, plan to take our club banner and club
postcards designed to advertise our club.
Don't forget our May 15th meeting and Lodi tour on May
21st. We will not have a JUNE business meeting due to
Graffiti, but we will meet on July 10th. At our May meeting
we will plan for QC and Graffiti. Jim Ridenour will once
again coordinate Graffiti details. We need a volunteer to
coordinate QC details such as: who is attending, driving
their cars, departure times, and rest stops. Call or email
me with any suggestions and questions.

We will take country roads to Lodi where at noon we will
enjoy a family style lunch at Pietro’s, 317 E. Kettleman Lane. After lunch we
will take a short drive to a local winery.
We will meet at Al’s Furniture, 6340 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, at 10:00
a.m. and plan to depart by 10:30 a.m. Lunch cost is $30.24 per person, which
includes tax and tip.
A signup sheet will be circulated at the May meeting. Deadline to signup or
cancel is May 17th. If you have questions contact our hosts, Jack and Janis

Hello fellow T-Birders,
Mona and I can’t believe how fast the busy schedule of vacations and car shows has
invaded our lives. There have already been some shows in our area and my first one of
the year is coming this Saturday April 30 at Parkview Christian Estates. As of now I
don’t have any scheduled for May and only Graffiti in June, although I know I will sign
up for others.
With that said, as a club we are really looking good this year. We have hosts for all of
our monthly meetings, a driving tour on May 21, another in September and car shows
coming out of our tailpipes. Our newsletter and website have
the complete listing of car shows and events.
I will be seeking people to step up and assume a coordinator
role, helping all of us be in right place at the right time. I will
assume that role for Graffiti, but need someone to volunteer
for QC and for the CTCI convention. We can talk more about
this at our next meeting.
Don’t forget our next meeting is at P. Wexford’s Pub, in
Modesto on May 15th.

Graffiti Festival 2016
& Car Show
June 10 –12th,
Modesto, California
AMERICAN GRAFFITI™ FESTIVAL
All entries will receive one event T-shirt, one dash plaque, one poster, admission to the
show for two people in the vehicle for Saturday and Sunday, and entry in the Friday
Night Parade.
Early registration by May 29th is $40. After May 29th it is $50.
If you are going to be in the parade you must check in at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center, 1612 Sisk Road. Those choosing not to enter the parade may pick up
their registration packets at the Friday Registration/Check in or at the festival on Saturday or Sunday.
How to Register: The easiest way to register is online at the website
www.americangraffitifestival.com/registration.html. It is a simple fill in the blanks,
click submit, and pay by credit card or PayPal.
You can also mail your registration form (available on our website), along with your
payment, to Modesto Kiwanis Club PO Box 576491, Modesto 95357-6491.
Jim Ridenour will once again coordinate our group’s participation, including our meeting place for entry, as well as reserved parking for the car show. Bring your chair and

Ignition and Door Lock Cylinder Replacement
This particular repair turned out to have a bonus for me. I decided to change all my locks because a previous
owner had changed one of the door locks which left me with two different ignition-style keys so I was always
fumbling with keys every time we got in the car. One key for the ignition and both doors was my only goal. After changing the ignition-key cylinder, I found that the switch, which had felt loose and nebulous, now behaved
like a new switch with crisp, solid clicks between positions and no unwanted movement.
Part 1: Ignition Cylinder
The ignition cylinder is the easiest of the three to change; just be sure to disconnect the battery first! There is probably a tool (actually I'm pretty sure there is) to remove the bezel
around the switch. I use snap ring pliers, which have other uses and actually work pretty well.
Whichever you choose to use, engage the two notches in the bezel and give it 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
The small ring will come off and the larger ring behind it will slide right off. The switch can
then be removed from the back of the dash. Once you can see the switch, locate a hole in the housing just before the narrow part ends. You may have to rotate or remove the spring to have access.
Once you have found the slot, note the pin which should not depress. Turn the key to the “on” position (you did disconnect the
battery, right?) and you should be able to depress the pin. With
luck, the cylinder will pop out on its own, or you might have to pull
a little, but not much.
Installing the new cylinder is just the opposite; make sure the key
in the new cylinder is in the “on” position and the pin is depressed. Slide the cylinder back into the switch, turn
the key to the “off” position, and the pin should pop up locking the cylinder in place. Reinstall the switch and
the bezel and lock everything into place with a quarter turn clockwise on the nut and you're done.
Part 2: Door Locks
Doing this is especially nice if your old ones are scarred from a previous owner sanding
for a repaint. The first step is to locate the lock retainer under the weather stripping,
just to the rear of the lock--not too bad if your weather stripping is reasonably supple.
You will need a high quality weather stripping cement to reattach any weather stripping
that comes loose. I recommend 3M black.
The only thing that shows, once the weather stripping is pulled away, is the tab on the
left. The rest is slid through the door into a groove in the lock. Pull the tab and the rest of
the U-shaped clip out, and the lock should pull out easily, unless it was painted into
place. That should have been relatively easy.
The new lock has two pins protruding toward the inside of the door.

After installing the lock, check and double check that the key works to both lock and unlock the door. Once
you're sure the pins are in the correct place, reinsert the U-clip and glue the weather stripping down and go on
to the other door. Then next time you go for a drive, enjoy the fruits of your labor.
A couple of notes: First there are replacement U-clips and gaskets available. I like the original U-clips better-they're easier to use. It's my understanding that Thunderbirds didn't originally come with a gasket, and using
them just makes it much harder to install the U-clip, which can already be a pain. The other is a disclaimer
that, other than the picture of the Thunderbird dash, the parts pictured are from a 1956 F100 which are very
similar if not the same as the 'Bird's. Cool factor: the key which is the original from our car just happened to fit
the F100 ignition, which didn't have a key.

Thank you to our hosts Jim Ridenour and Mona Stebbing for hosting the meeting. Welcome to guests Ken Huckaby of
Oakdale and son-in-law Joe Colvard. There were 23 members and 2 guests in attendance.

Secretary: Katrina Tellez – After correcting the omission of the treasury balance, a motion was made by Keith Rogers,
seconded by Jim Ridenour to approve the March minutes as reported in the April newsletter.
Sunshine: Shirley Mattos – Reported April Birthdays and Anniversaries. Galen is doing well, but Shirley is a little under
the weather herself.
Meetings/Tours: Jim Ridenour – Next meeting is May 15th with hosts Don and Jan Wigle venue TBA in the newsletter,
signup circulated. Tour on Saturday May 21st hosted by Jack and Janice Martin, signup circulated. Meet at Al’s furniture
on McHenry Ave. 10:00 a.m., leave at 10:30 for an approximate 40 minute drive on back roads to Pietro’s, Kettleman
Lane in Lodi, for a family style lunch. The cost is $30.00 each, $60.00 per couple, cash/check made payable to MACTC.
Members who sign up are responsible for the cost of their lunch, unless cancellation is made two days prior to this tour.

Newsletter/Publicity: Jim Ridenour reports in Pats absence; in order to have room to post the many events on the web
site, it may be preferable to have links instead of signup sheets. If there are ideas for, or something members would like
to see on the web site please let Pat know. Our June newsletter will be a “Graffiti Edition,” and Pat would like pictures
of you with any old favorite car. Please bring to May meeting, they will be returned unharmed.
ACCC: Keith Rogers – Nothing to report.
Old Business: Keith Rogers reports the club is not limited to how funds are spent, but cannot sponsor a car show or
fundraiser. Sandra Hood volunteered to write a letter to MJC’s auto restoration class to thank them for their dedication
to learning how to restore classic cars. A motion was made by Janice Martin, seconded by Sandra Hood, that in lieu of a
check for $100.00 to C.T.C.I. Convention; “MACTC could donate a Blue Diamond Nut Basket with donations from
members”, motion carried. Janice Martin will collect the donations and purchase the gift basket, Ken and Roberta Van
Dyke will deliver it.
New Business: Keith Rogers shared the following figures regarding MACTC treasury; in 2015 expensed $800.00, income
$675.00 = <$125.00>. For 2016: Website - $360.00, Inc. Fees/Tax Prep - $200.00, ACCC - $125.00, Roster $271.00, Year end
gifts/Presidents Trophy - $200.00 = $1,156.00; Income: 29 Memberships @ $25.00 = $675.00, Give Away offsets Newsletter. Year to date expenses less income $1,156.00 - $675.00 = $<481.00>. Recognizing MACTC needs Q.C. seed money, has
taken on an increased expenditures for the web site, incorporation/attorney fees, newsletter, roster, ACCC, end of year
gifts and presidents plaque; Jim Ridenour proposes a $10.00 increase in yearly dues, to take effect January 2017, with a
change to Article IV Section 2 Dues, as follows: “Dues for Full Members and Associate members are $35.00 per year.” A formal
written proposal must be submitted to the board, contingent upon board approval, be printed in the newsletter two consecutive months; thus a motion can be made for MACTC members to bring the matter of increasing dues to a vote.
