Take a walk around the Lake Highland
campus. You can’t help being touched
by our thriving arts. You might hear
the new Highlander Philharmonic; you
may see stellar student artwork and
photography displayed in one of the three
campus “galleries;” or you might catch a
performance of Project Magic at a pep rally
in between their work in the hospitals. We
are Cultivating Creativity!
Membership in the Arts League allows
our school to enhance all of the arts. For
example, membership funds provided
state-of-the-art headphones for Academy
rehearsals and funded an exciting new
drum curriculum for Lower School. The Arts
League Board of Directors discusses and
approves grant requests using membership
funds. We also conducted a fundraiser
last year to “Light up the Blackbox” and,
thanks to generous donations, we are proud
to announce the new Skydeck with special
lighting is now installed in our Johnny
Holloway Blackbox Theatre.
I am honored to be President of the
Arts League as my passion is for the arts.
My favorite week at Lake Highland is The
Arts Festival when a palette of colorful
flags and banners adorn the campus and
the artistic theme of the festival is unveiled
in decor and festival t-shirts. The Arts
League is instrumental in helping create
a creative atmosphere, a synergy between
all three campuses and an energetic vibe
during the week. The tradition will continue
with Lake Highland’s third projectART,
our community outreach program where
students from Pre-K through 12th grade
collaborate on an art piece for a deserving
organization such as past recipients Arnold
Palmer Hospital for Children and the
Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
Watch for this year’s arts theme, the
iconic Pop Art, the art of everyday popular
culture, and join us as we celebrate the arts!

Statement
The LHPS Arts League
is a parent organization
created to provide the Arts
at Lake Highland with
volunteer support and
financial assistance.
LHPS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations to the LHPS Arts League are tax deductible as
prescribed by law. All Arts League donations will apply toward “Top of the Dome” status and other donor recognition
levels. Corporate donations and matching gifts are also welcome.
“
Always be on the lookout
for the presence of wonder.
- E.B. White
At the end of last year we were very sorry
to bid farewell to our Arts Administrator, BettieAnn Candelora, as she left Lake Highland and
Florida to be closer to her family. I was honored
to be asked to take her place. I have been in
the Upper School Drama program since 2001
and it is a genuine pleasure to become an even
closer collaborator with the Arts Faculty, LHPS
Administration and the Arts League. Also new
in their teaching positions this year are Mrs. Pam
Greening in primary art and Mrs. Denise Heckbert
in elementary art. New to the LHPS faculty are
Terry Thomas in Middle School and Upper School
Chorus and Drama, and Bianca Khoury as the
new Dance teacher and Coach. Our extraordinary
arts faculty continues to grow in their art and in
the art of teaching.
“I loved doing the outer space adventure
because I liked making up stuff. We made up a
planet,” said Steven Sombeck in Mrs. Heckbert’s
4th grade art class.
We have the privilege at Lake Highland to lead
these elementary, adolescent and teenage artists
as they express, explore, collaborate and create
big things like a whole planet and small things
like the wings of a butterfly. Whether starting
early or later, the student considers how to take
what’s inside and send it out to others who in turn
bring meaning to the expression. Communication,
empathy and art is born.
The following capacities for imaginative
learning from “Aesthetic Education, Inquiry and
the Imagination” developed by the Lincoln Center
Institute in 2007 are listed as keys to the artistic
experience: noticing deeply, questioning, making
connections, identifying patterns, exhibiting
empathy, creating meaning and taking action.
As our students paint, sing, play music, act,
dance, debate, march, mold clay, make magic,
photograph, video and sculpt, they become
proficient in these capacities essential to their
future and the future of their favorite planet.
Thank you for being part of the arts at Lake
Highland and being on the lookout for wonder!

Campus & Community Arts
The LHPS campus is transformed for a week into a festival atmosphere during The Arts Festival. Students
participate in special themed arts projects and attend a wide variety of arts performances by classmates
and professional special guests. In 2014, Surrealism was the theme with floating umbrellas in the Rex and
melting clocks adorning fences and balconies. Our community art outreach program, projectART, annually
links Lake Highland with an important community partner. The 2014 surreal piece “L’enfant Miro” is
installed in the new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
