It always feels like a short hop from Christmas to Easter but this year seems especially fast. For the first time in nearly 10 years, I was unable to go on the annual school ski trip to Italy. To say I was unhappy when the coach pulled away was an understatement. This left a big hole in my half term holiday, but did allow me time to reflect on all the work is such a good way of sharing messages, ideas and good news. I would encourage all parents and carers to look at the College’s Esafety Policy and related Safeguarding Policies to ensure that while using the latest devices to communicate we all stay safe. Mr Markham Head Teacher NEW LIFE IN THE SCIENCE LAB The science department is proud to announce the hatching of 8 new chicks. The eggs have been borrowed from a farm and have been hatching in Miss Maddison’s room. Many students from the school have been excitedly keeping track of the hatching chicks and have had the opportunity to hold and pet them. In the photo you can see the brooder box in which the chicks will live until they re- 1 that the College has been involved in since September. A quick scroll through our Twitter feed gives a good summary of events. My personal highlights include the College’s production of Bugsy complete with splurge guns, the on-going success of the Duke of Edinburgh award and seeing some of the excellent A level Technology design work, especially the Elephant Light designed by Harry Broad. Social media turn to their farm next week. We only have the chicks for a week so if you have not seen them yet, make sure to pop down to room 1.10 as soon as possible to say hello. Page 2 KEMNAL TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE DUKE OF EDINBURGH SILVER AWARD 2016 After months of training, our Silver DofE boys finally had the chance to put all their skills to the test on a practice expedition in April. They were dropped off at Farnborough Church on an early Saturday morning and spent three days crossing the Kent countryside. They covered 27 miles and camped in very cold conditions at Waylands and Downe scout campsites. All four groups displayed confidence in navigation, camp craft and teamwork. They cooked a variety of pasta dishes both nights keeping their strength up for the arduous walks in the day. Even the staff got to work finding wood for the campfire! The boys now have the chal- lenge of preparing for a 36 mile trek across the New Forest in June where their skills will be scrutinised by two New Forest Network assessors. The environment is far more challenging to navigate and they spend one night wild camping in the forest with the ponies and deer. We will update you on their progress via twitter. Good luck boys. The DofE team 2016 EXTENDED PROJECT On Wednesday 27th April, Year 13 students Mary Adeyemo, Patryk Deniziuk and Charlie Hearn presented their research topics to staff after completing the Extended Project Qualification. The topics they researched were“Do pharmaceutical companies charge too much for their products?” “Does partial sensory deprivation af2 fect the ability to estimate time?” and “What motivates us?” All three students explained their interest in the topics they chose, the process of how they did their primary and secondary research and what the findings of their research was. Well done to all three for their dedication and hard work in their final preparations for academic life at university. Newsletter Spring 16 Page 3 BUGSY MALONE This year’s production of Bugsy Malone continued the exceptionally high standards that we have come to expect of Kemnal Technology College productions. The fine cast of students, which was supplemented by several girls from All The Arts Theatre company put on an excellent show, taking us back to the gangland streets of 1920s Chicago. With a professional sounding band and an excellent 1920s set this show was a real triumph for the Creative Arts team. A big ‘Thank you’ to all those involved. Jon Hunter (Creative Director) HIGHEST NATIONAL SCORE IN YR 13 FINANCE EXAMS On 15th April, Kemnal welcomed back recent Sixth-Former, Louis Tirado. Louis came in bearing with him a large, fancy carrier bag. Was it full of nice presents to thank his old teachers? Not quite… but what it did contain was enough to put a big smile on everyone’s face. Louis had come in to shows us the award he won from the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) for the best performing student nationally in the Certificate in Finance, Risk and Decision-Making qualification last year. Louis achieved Agrades in both papers – a magnificent achievement. Louis was presented 3 with a trophy and a magnificent silver salver at the CISI’s 23rd annual awards ceremony held at the Mansion House, in the City of London on 18th April. The Mansion House is the home of the Lord Mayor of the City of London and it was a glittering occasion. Top performers from over 40,000 CISI exams taken in 80 countries were recognised for their outstanding exam success, with prizes being awarded in 58 categories, covering capital markets and corporate finance, operations, compliance and risk, wealth management, financial planning and Islamic finance. Louis beat all-comers in the Schools category by coming top in the ALevel equivalent Certificate. This autumn, Louis will put his Finance ALevel to good use when he goes up to the Caption describing University of picture or graphic. Essex University, to start his degree course in Accounting and Finance. His achievement is an inspiration for all the Year 12 and Year 13 students taking the CISI Finance A-Level equivalent at Kemnal. Louis Tirado receives his award from the chair of the CISI Educational Trust, Clare GoreLangton FCISI Page 4 SKI TRIP BORMIO 2016 ART TRIP On Friday 12th February, the year 13 took a stroll to London to gather evidence for their photography exam. Year 13 BTEC Art investi- 4 gated shop logo design. We went to the Photographers gallery then walked back to the National gallery where students were asked to find work related to their art project. We finished the trip on the Southbank. The trip was inspiring and students gathered material throughout the day. WE also had time to visit a couple of art galleries, a real treat to see how much … a piece of art can be sold for £32,000… Mrs C Robert (art) New sletter Spring 16 Page 5 Y E A R 9 C R E AT I V E W R I T I N G CHARLIE HARRIS (9MC) MISSION TO SAVE PLANET EARTH that will fit an atom bomb inside with four screw holes we will also need 4 x 1m long screws to keep the case in place on the meteor. 28 January 2016 While I continue to brag to all of my friends about the mission, I remember that I need to pack food so I did. I packed the following ; ice cream, bread, frozen meat, pot noodles and 10 chocolate bars just as a snack. Dear Diary Today I’ve been chosen to go on a mission of a life time. My mission is to go to space and take out the incoming meteorite that is heading towards earth. I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I will conquer this meteorite and save the world. My phone started to ring so I answered the call it was NASA they said that they needed the team there ASAP. I replied saying ok boss I am on my way. I have to admit, I broke the speed limit but I made it. I begin to pack for my epic journey to space, I pack 4 pairs of pyjamas, 2 tracksuits and my sleeping bag all in a 5” x 8” x 2” bag. For the equipment we will use a tactical atom bomb, a trigger, drills and a metal casing space in 20 minutes. So 20 minutes had passed and we were about to take off. I feel the engines rumble then all of a sudden I was jolted back in my seat, I thought to myself this is it. A big gust of smoke came from under the aircraft then we heard the roaring flames from the engine, we had lift off. We travelled so fast that before I knew it we were in the mysterious world of space. It was breath taking but we saw the asteroid pass it. We were taken on board the space craft, they told us that we would be taking flight for JORDAN SELF (9TTH) MISSION TO SAVE PLANET EARTH It was huge, the tall giant was standing in front of my eyes. Millions of people standing cheering team GB. Loud noises echoed through the metal monster. It was time. Nervously walking towards the rocket. We arrived. The government, my wife, even my boss was cheering me on. I climbed up the ladder into a small hole in the rocket. I said my last goodbyes to family and friends. I bet you’re wondering why are we going to space? Well a huge corrupted meteor was racing towards our planet ready to kill mankind. I’m so nervous. It was small inside the rocket hardly anything to do. I got told we had one minute until blast off. 5 Seconds turned to minutes turned to hours and hours turned to days. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 blast off! There was a sudden shudder, the roaring rocket finally leaped into space. Our mission has started. I looked back at the space station, the smoke had spread like a deadly disease. We were miles away from Earth now, I felt myself screaming in my head why did you do it? I looked out the small circular window. Millions of shining stars shimmered in the utter darkness. The kaleidoscopic galaxies floated silently beside me. Brilliant, bright shooting starts whizzed past me into the future. I plugged my headphones into my phone and listened to the wonderful music of 2055. There was a loud noise coming from the speakers above my head. It said we are now exiting Earth’s atmosphere unplug your seatbelts. So I did. I felt amazing. I felt like I was a bird flying into the night sky. My stomach was doing front flips inside of me. I floated towards the small window I looked out. It was huge. Saturn was in front of me. The huge spherical rings of frozen ice and frozen rocks spun with it. We had one day to reach this asteroid. I was starving now, I pulled out of my bag a small portion of chicken and another small portion of fruits which was inside a plastic bag. How am I meant to eat this I thought. Well done! - Mr Elias. ART CLUB ART Club 2016 This year’s art club was established for year 9’s interested in gaining extra experience to support their forthcoming GCSE choice. However it was invaded by several years 7’s who have also made a great start on their artwork. Currently we are completing our finger paintings (A2 in size!) in preparation for our next project based upon chosen super heroes. All participants who COCA COLA FACTORY TRIP On 26th April 2016, set 2 went to the Coca-Cola factory in Sidcup to help students who are taking geography as an option for our GCSE's. The trip was very interesting and educational. We learnt various different things about the industry and how it all works. I also learnt different things I never knew before, for example, over 31 million Coca-Cola bottles are 9 made every week and it takes 2 hours for one finished product of coke to be made. Logan Mee 9.2 ing political opinions to one side, as the groups were selected at random. It is hoped that the whole student body will benefit by engaging in the debate that has started to immerse the whole country. As well as raising political awareness around the school, students at Kemnal will start to understand how to respond to the different campaigns and ideas that are presented to them. So, look out for posters, announcements, and leaflets around the school, soon! Mr S Addison New sletter Spring 16 Page 10 HARRY HAGUES 11MH Congratula ons to Harry Hagues 11 MH for his outstanding commitment to extra‐ curricular sports clubs. Harry has been a part of the table tennis club since year 7 and throughout his me at the club he has grown in his ability to play as well as coach others. He works well with younger students and increases both their confidence and skill. Harry has also been a part of the football team for the same pe‐ riod of me and acts in an incredibly selfless manner, al‐ ways pu ng the teams interest before his own. Since ob‐ taining his FA qualifi‐ ca on for officia ng in football he has used this skill to referee fix‐ tures for KS3 teams. He helped me with my voice training of the schools trainee teachers and supports the drama department in a number of ways. He has been using his Wednesday afternoon enrichment sessions to coach and help a yr11 drama group with their GCSE. What ever I ask of him, he is willing to help out. I reckon if I was to bring my ironing in, he would oblige. Ms Garrard—Head of Drama BRANDON MURPHY 8TMA Brandon really is superb in class but what sets him apart is that he is an exemplar student. He completes homework and all classwork and is an absolute delight. Polite, courteous and always on time to lessons. He is very helpful in class and so committed to doing well that I wish all of our students were 10 like him - Ms Allen Head of Maths. Brandon has to be one of the most polite and courteous students in the year group. He can be seen in his free time coaching them basketball skills and facilitating ad hoc practice sessions. An excellent role model, Alex is calm and positive and encourages the students to treat each other with respect and courtesy. He also encourages the students to follow school expectations and behaviour guidelines. Students in the younger years look up to Alex and will go to him for support which he freely gives. Alex also actively runs the basketball club with yr7 through to 10 after school. He is fully committed and his dedication and enthusiasm inspires both students and staff. We are lucky to have him in our sixth form and would like to recognise the positive impact he has on the college and the students in it. Survivor Mala Tribich pictured with College Captain George Sayell and Senior Prefect Anu Babatunde. The students and staff who were fortunate to hear her testimony found it inspirational and moving. Some of the students had this to say about Mala’s visit. “I think it was very beneficial for all students to hear the story from a person who was actually there.” Alex Ngan- Year9 “I thought the talk was very interesting and shocking. I really didn’t know that much about the Holocaust before.” Jack Rogers- Year 9 “It was a very emotional BROMLEY ROTARY CLUB Recognising young people’s outstanding contributions to the community. On 29 January the Mayor of Bromley Councillor Kim Botting presented awards to 22 young people from local secondary schools for their contributions to the community as volunteers or carers. This was the first award ceremony under a scheme set up by Bromley Rotary Club to recognise the good work young people do in the community and to encourage more to be community -minded. The ceremony took place at 11 Langley Park School for Boys, whose dance band provided musical entertainment. The scheme started with four schools: Ravensbourne, St Olave’s, Kemnal Technology and Langley Park Boys. Kemnal Technology College were very proud to be part of this event and recognise the achievement of the year 10 students who had worked so hard on the project. In year 9 these students had worked hard with year 6 students from Grays Farm Primary to help them adjust to secondary school life and build their confidence about the transition process. Stu- dents form the Primary school were encouraged to talk through their concerns and given the opportunity to work with our students to complete some cooking and get to know their way around the college. A very big WELL DONE to Cameron Stephen, Harry Bush, Tom Cannon-Smythe, Jordan North, Robbie Muckle and Chris Wayman. A special WELL DONE to Daniel Whitten year 11 also for his work in supporting his siblings and other young people with their first year at school. Mr G Scott Newsletter Spring 16 Page 12 YR13 PRODUCT DESIGN STUDENTS ILLUMINATE KEMNAL A level students in yr13 have been designing and making light installations for their A2 coursework. They have produced elegant and sophisticated solutions for their individual client design briefs and used a range of materials to achieve a high quality product. They have competently used the software and equipment we have at Kemnal to make these amazing lights including the laser cutter and 3D printer. Each piece was entered for the’ Furnishing the Future’ School Design Prize and Competition. As a recognised and respected awardgiving body The Furniture Makers’ Company School Design Prize is a fantastic accolade to feature on a student’s CV and we are extremely proud that Adam Norman was a winner for his ‘Rose lamp’. The prize is designed to build the foundations of confidence and aspiration in young people and inspire them to consider a future career in the furnishing industry. The Tour of the stadium was perfect, we saw a lot of things, like the changing rooms, the skyboxes, the tunnel and the tour guide was very entertaining. Muhammed Khan. We went to the Louvre and saw many famous paintings including the Mona Lisa.- Karel Gordon Mme. Lambert excelled her self again in her superb planning and tour leading of 12 Kemnal students and staff this Spring 2016. The morning started very early at Ebbsfleet Station, where Mme. Lambert and myself were joined by 9 of Kemnal’s finest students, 1 arriving just 5 minutes before the departure of the train itself (mentioning no names !). Nevertheless, the Eurostar journey was comfortable, if uneventful, as most of us were too intent on catching up on missed sleep. As the Eurostar glided into Gare Du Nord, we were gently awoken to shards of golden sunlight, and stirring ourselves, stepped out into the waking French capital, at which point Mme. Lambert took full control and shepherded us into the Metro, leading to our Auberge in central south Paris. As we made our way from the Metro stop, the students were heard to remark how laid back and clean the French Capital was, with it’s 13 wide boulevards, Cafés, and elegantly dressed residents. Firmly ensconced in our lodgings, Mme Lambert cheerfully ‘cracked the whip’ and thus began our first day of sightseeing. And boy ! Did we see a lot of sights, crisscrossing Paris taking in Les Invalides, L’Arc de Triomphe, then to Jardin de Luxembourg for the Museum of Languages, followed by an evening trip on a pleasure boat on the Seine, all the while enjoying Paris’s historic architecture, food smells and multilingual chatter that surrounded us everywhere. Day two saw us up and out of our Auberge good and early, and first stop was at the Chateau de Versailles, where we saw how the Sun King not only cut up his kingdom, but also his household, banishing his wife to the ground floor, and taking formal residence in grand apartments, which on closer inspection, revealed secret doors to a tiny bedroom and simple single bed, where he apparently preferred to sleep. Later that afternoon, and after a leisurely mosey through Les Jardins du Chateau de Versailles, where plentiful chocolate Gauffres were munched, we made our way back to central Paris, where we took in the Tour Eiffel, up close, and in 700 steps. Vertical ones ! The Tour Eiffel never fails to make an impression on people, both young and old, and our modest group was no exception. Were it not for the pigeons that swirled high above, we would have stood, agog, mouth open, gaping at this French icon. But as the ever energetic Mme. Lambert would have it, we wasted no time in scaling the tower – on foot. The boys, to their credit seized the chance to show their steady heads for heights zooming up the foot shined steel steps, to the second floor, where the boys confidently leaned on the heavily fenced balconies, pointing out distant objects on the horizon, and contributing their own excited chirps to the hubbub of hundreds of other visitors of every imaginable nationality. These are some of the many delightful experiences that Paris has to offer, and, given enough time off the Kemnal timetable, I am sure that Mme. Lambert would have enthusiastically and energetically shown us them all, and we, her tour party, would have soaked it all up with gusto ! Bravo boys of Kemnal & thank you Mme Lambert for showing us Paris, a city that’ll be part of us forever !
