Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
Joyful preparation
Una preparación de Gozo
In his letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul instructs them
to “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice!” We take his words to heart today on Gaudete or
“rejoicing” Sunday. We light the third Advent candle with
increased excitement and anticipation. The Baby Jesus
is coming! Indeed, the Lord is near. We are only
twelve days away from Christmas! Today’s Old Testament reading speaks to this day that we are preparing
for. Zephaniah reminded the Israelites that “on that
day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be
not discouraged! The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a
mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness
and renew you in his love.” This describes Christmas
Day when the Baby Jesus comes to restore all grace
and “remove the judgment against [us].” The responsorial psalm captures our joy, “God indeed is my savior; I
am confident and unafraid. My strength and my courage
is the Lord.” This confidence and strength allows us to
honestly hear John the Baptist’s answer in today’s gospel when the crowds inquire if he is the Messiah, “One
mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the
thongs of his sandals. He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His
winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his
threshing floor and to gather the wheat
into his barn, but the chaff he will burn
with unquenchable fire.” These words
direct our Advent focus of repentance
and preparation. Are we ready to receive this new born baby, our Messiah?
Have we heeded John the Baptist’s
words,” Whoever has two cloaks should
share with the person who has none”?
Acting on John’s advice brings us to the
joy that we celebrate today.

Retirement Fund for Religious
Prayer Angel Tree
In OLA tradition we will once again have our
Prayer Angel Tree in the sanctuary. We invite you to write your prayer need/intention
on a blank angel and either hang it on the tree or place in
the basket, do not write your name. Then, take home the
angel (or two) of another parishioner to pray for. As a
parish family we will pray for one and other's needs
throughout the season of Advent. All angels will be
prayed over whether taken home or not.

Safe Environment
Did you Know?
Safety is key even when visiting Santa Claus
Visiting Santa Claus can be a grand
and positive childhood experience.
However, some people who seek to
bring Santa to life in a child’s world
are not deserving of our trust. Make
sure your child knows that there are
special rules for Santa and that parents or guardians must always be
with the child when he or she visits Santa. One rule to
consider is encouraging your child to stand next to Santa
or sit on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on
his lap. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Safety for
Children AND Santa’s Helpers,” email: jvienna@laarchdiocese.org.

The logo and the motto together provide a
fitting summary of what the Jubilee Year is
all about. The motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36)
serves as an invitation to follow the merciful
example of the Father who asks us not to
judge or condemn but to forgive and to give
love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38).
The logo – the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik –
presents a small summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it represents an image quite important to the
early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstrating that it is the love of Christ
that brings to completion the mystery of his incarnation
culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in
such a way so as to express the profound way in which
the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and
does so with a love with the power to change one’s life.
One particular feature worthy of note is that while the
Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon
himself, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ
sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of
Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam,
one’s own humanity and the future that lies ahead, contemplating, in his gaze, the love of the Father.
The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the
shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and
medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures
of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals,
with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of
the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the
darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the
Father who forgives all. Taken from www.usccb.org.

¿Sabia Usted?
