Ask the NIFS Expert
Question: Can I improve my flexibility?
Exercise of the Month
1. Face a corner where 2
walls come together
2. Stand 2ft away from
the wall with feet
together and toes
forward
3. Lean towards the wall
with your arms at a 90
degree angle at the
elbow, elbows lower
than the shoulders,
and your palms and
forearms flat against
the wall
4. Breathe normally and
maintain stretch for
10-30 seconds
5. Repeat the stretch for
the desired amount of
reps
* To decrease the intensity of the stretch step
forward placing your feet
in a staggered position
Answer:
Yes. Flexibility is an important component to any exercise
regimen and goes hand-in-hand with strengthening. Research
supports strengthening our muscles to aid in the prevention of
osteopenia and to delay the progression of sarcopenia (muscle
loss). To strengthen our muscles properly, we must have full
range of motion around a joint. Full range of motion can be
achieved by including a stretching routine in your programming.
Although research has not provided us with conclusive optimal
stretching protocols, it does note that holding static stretches for
longer periods of time provides better results. I recommend
introducing static stretching to your work out after you have
warmed up the muscles in that area.
Exercise increases tension in the muscles which can lead to
decreased range of motion. Stretching will alleviate tension and
help the muscle return to full length. A static stretch should be
held for 30 to 60 seconds. During this time, it is important that
you achieve a stretch that is uncomfortable but not painful. It is
imperative you relax into the stretch to allow your brain to send a
message to your muscle that it is safe. Otherwise your body may
fight the stretch and increased flexibility will not be achieved.
The more you stretch, the sooner and more likely you will see
increases in your flexibility. It is safe and preferable to stretch
every day, however increased flexibility can still be achieved by
only stretching 3 times a week.

Active Adventure
Coffee Talk
For June, the Active Adventure will be to
Eagle Creek Park, “With 1400 acres of water
and 3900 acres of forest, Eagle Creek Park is
one of the largest city parks in the nation,
offering unmatched opportunities for
recreation, enjoyment, and discovery
of nature only minutes from downtown
Indianapolis.” We will walk for roughly an
hour, but we welcome all fitness levels to join,
as there are plenty of places to sit and rest
when needed. While a few of the trails are
ADA approved, none of them are paved.
After our stroll around the track,
transportation will take us out for a relaxing
lunch at Boathouse Grill. Sign up in the trip
book today to join us for this afternoon filled
with exercise and fun!
Join us on Thursday, June 16 at 9:30 a.m. in
the Card Room to hear about “How to Stay
Active Outdoors and How to Stay Hydrated.”
With Summer here, it is important to stay
hydrated. If you are looking for tips on staying
active during the Hot Summer Days, this is
the coffee talk for you!!!
Member Spotlight: MaryEmily Davisson
How long have you been a member of the
Wellness Center? I have been a member of
the Wellness Center ever since it opened.
What was the motivating facto that compelled you to join the WC? Or was there a
person? No one influenced me to join. I have
always tried to stay healthy and I used to walk a
mile each morning before school. When I lost
my ability to walk, the WC seemed like a good
place to exercise.
What has been your favorite part about the
WC? The chair class has been one of my
favorite activities. I have also enjoyed using the
NuStep to keep my legs active. As I have gotten
older, I find that I get too tired if I do too much. I
usually can’t do both. I have also enjoyed some
of the special themes and activities.
Codie Monhollen

How does WC support your health? WC
has helped broaden my concept of good.
The eight dimensions of wellness have
given me a new understanding of what
wellness really is. And because of this, I try
to incorporate each into my daily life.
What do you do in your spare time? In
my spare time I crochet, read, work
puzzles, recently I started helping the
Pavilion with Bingo. Also, I have lived in
the Village for 13 years and I feel that the
Wellness Center has been the most
important addition to the village. A few
years ago when we had a “talent” show, I
formed a kazoo band. There were 14 of us
that made up the troop. We had kazoos
shaped like trumpets, trombones, French
horns, and plain ones. We all dressed up
like Hillbillies and had a great time!

60 Day Challenge!!!
Greenwood Village South Residents and Staff,
We’re excited to announce an upcoming exercise challenge! During 60
days in the months of May through July Greenwood Village South will participate
in an exercise challenge along with other LCS communities across the country.
Our goal is to achieve the highest amount of exercise time through a variety
of exercise options. Whether it’s walking outside, using a treadmill, resistance
training or biking, all these options will count toward our grand total. Both
residents and staff at our community will be taking part in this challenge.
This exercise challenge was inspired as a way to raise awareness for
Alzheimer’s disease. Part of the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association is to
reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Exercise
and physical activity are certainly ways to make our brains healthier.
Furthermore, LCS, our management company, is a strong supporter of the
Alzheimer’s Association and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
If you are interested in participating, registration is easy! Simply contact
Codie Monhollen at (317) 865-4691 or go to the Wellness Center.
You will then be given tracking sheets and a pedometer that can help you track
your exercise time. You will keep track of your exercise time from
May 27 - July 25. You can turn in your sheets every Friday to Codie
Monhollen.
We will keep you updated on how our team is doing with our exercise time
totals and where we stand with the others. Also, the top two residents with
the most time will receive a mystery prize!!! Additionally, this is also a
competition among residents and employees on who can accumulate the most
hours of exercise.
We look forward to having you take part is this great program!
Featured Resident of the Month
Ann Wathen
Ann Wathen was born and raised in Evansville. I intended to become a commercial
artist. However, when I started Ursuline College in Louisville, the Dean of Women said
to me, "Women can't make it in that field. Be a teacher." So, I did for 39 years. The
last 14 were in a men's State Penitentiary in Maryland, an interesting but frustrating
job.
After retiring in 2000, I went back to art. Teaching painting classes part time at
Michael's in Maryland was fun. A real contrast to trying to get prisoners to learn their
times tables.
Thanksgiving 2002 I moved to GVS, I have found people to be friendly, talented, and
interesting. I am glad I am here.
