2011 - New Canaan Community Foundation
2011 www.newcanaancf.org 1 The Foundation supports STAR, a provider of early intervention services to children with special needs from birth to 3 years old. The mission of the New Canaan Community Foundation is to promote community philanthropy and to help donors achieve their charitable goals. A Letter from Our President It is my privilege to report on the 2011 activities of the New Canaan Community Foundation and to look ahead to 2012 and the 35th anniversary of our founding. This report captures in words and pictures the highlights of our year. Its contents offer a tribute to our marvelous donors, board, volunteers and staff. Thanks to their generous financial support and tremendous dedication of time and talent, our collaborative work turns the Foundation’s goals into tangible results that enrich our community. The Foundation distributed nearly $910,000 in grants and scholarships in 2011. Of this total, $685,000 represents grants to 63 organizations serving our community’s most pressing needs. The important work of these nonprofits enriches us all, and our thorough grant review process ensures that we support the best organizations to meet the changing needs of our community. Since 1977, NCCF has granted over $7 million to nonprofit organizations. Demand for their vital services has escalated and NCCF represents a stable philanthropic partner offering both financial support and professional guidance for these critical local resources. Board member Dave Hunt, VP Distributions, and Cynthia Gorey, Executive Director, directed the annual grant making process, involving our entire Board and 27 residents as volunteers. NCCF awarded a record number of scholarships in 2011 — over $160,000 to 57 residents continuing their education and $4,500 in grants to two organizations that make scholarship awards to September, we launched a town-wide awareness campaign with local merchants who displayed tent cards at check-out counters to show their support of the Foundation. their students or staff. The Sapienza Scholarship program has had a major impact on hundreds of local students, fulfilling the wish of Anne and Anthony Sapienza to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives. The Foundation is a tremendous charitable resource for our community thanks to our extraordinary donors who sustained existing funds, established new funds, attended events, and contributed generously to our annual campaign. At year end, NCCF’s assets totaled approximately $12.4 million. Our development efforts, advanced by board member Ann Lobdell, attracted many new supporters to the Foundation. Our annual appeal co-chairs, Barb Achenbaum and Janet Lanaway, did an incredible job leading their dedicated Committee and spreading the word about NCCF’s mission. Their efforts increased the number of donors to the organization and exceeded our fundraising goals. NCCF held two unique and successful luncheons in 2011. The Touch a Life Luncheon in February raised $28,000 to help those in our community who need financial assistance. Our seventh annual Philanthropy Luncheon in November raised over $21,000 for the Young Philanthropists program. Our strategic planning efforts in 2010 prepared the Foundation to move forward on two new initiatives in the areas of development and improved local awareness. In August, the Foundation hired our first Director of Development, Leila Wetmore, and in In this year of our 35th anniversary, we researched the history of our intertwining hearts logo. The line connecting the hearts represents an unbroken path. This image is consistent with the services that NCCF provides through grant making and philanthropic services for donors. These services are pathways to improve our community as we make an investment together in our future. In 2012, we look forward to extending the Foundation’s reach, both in building awareness of our important role in our community and increasing charitable participation among town residents. Thank you for your interest in the Foundation, our work, and for being part of this remarkable organization that serves the needs of our entire community.
