To demonstrate Finger Mate
to your customers
DEMONSTRATION SAMPLE RING
The Finger Mate Demonstration Sample is a brass ring with a regular 14K gold catch
and spring mechanism. It was designed to show your customers how easily and securely
the Finger Mate works; just pull the top to open, push the bottoms together to close. No
buttons to find and push, and no dangling flaps! When closed, the mechanism is
concealed inside the bottom sections.
THE FINGER MATE MINT SET
Allows your customer to actually try a ring on in her
size!
This is a set of 20 specially designed rings, each with
a Finger Mate shank graduated by half-sizes from 3 to
121⁄2. It was created for Finger Mate Dealers to show
their customers how their own rings would look and feel
if they had Finger Mate shanks.
While the Finger Mate sizing gauge is an accurate
instrument, the Finger Mate Mint sample in the
customer’s own size is not only a more accurate means
of measuring, it is a most impressive sales tool as well.
The customer can see how easily the opened ring goes
over the knuckle, then closes and locks for a perfect
and comfortable fit. The customer doesn’t have to
imagine how her ring would fit and feel with a
Finger Mate shank, she can try on her exact size
and know precisely.
The set is made of very fine jeweler’s brass, then
heavily nickel plated. The spring and catch
mechanism however, and all the other internal
parts are made of 14K gold, just as is used in
regular Finger Mate shanks. No base metal is
ever used in any Finger Mate shank.
1
DETERMINE THE EXACT FINGER SIZE
SPECIAL SIZING GAUGE PROVIDED
Since the Finger Mate shank is designed to open to go over the
knuckle, conventional finger measuring gauges cannot be used.
Finger Mate has developed a special sizing gauge that is available
to all of its dealers. This gauge has an adjustable band that slides
open to go over the knuckle, then is tightened down to measure the
finger where the ring is worn.
FINGER MATE SHANKS NOT ADJUSTABLE
Unlike conventional ring shanks, Finger Mate shanks are NOT
ADJUSTABLE. They are made to specific finger sizes and once
attached to a ring cannot be altered merely by adding or removing
a piece from the bottom as in a conventional sizing job. For this
reason, it is doubly important that the proper size be determined
accurately the first time.
The special gauge supplied by Finger
Mate has been calibrated according to the
American standard ring size scale starting at
size 3 and graduated by half sizes to size
13. The size is read on the scale at the point
indicated by the line across the center of the
sliding button. Though the gauge is calibrated
in half and full sizes, Finger Mate shanks may
be ordered by the in-between quarter sizes
(1⁄4 – 3⁄4) for an even more accurate fit.
IS IT NECESSARY TO
MEASURE THE KNUCKLE?
USE OF THE GAUGE
Proper use of the gauge is of paramount importance. To be used
properly, the band must be closed down on the finger to a very snug
fit. The flesh should bulge slightly around the edges of the band.
When the customer first says, “Oh, I think that is a little too tight,”
you have the right size. The reason for this is obvious. Most shanks
used are very narrow, narrower than the band on the gauge. This
means that the shank is going to feel looser than the gauge. When
using the gauge for rings that require wider shanks, 4 mm. to 6
mm. for instance, the gauge should be used in the same manner for
consistency, but 1⁄4 or 1⁄2 size larger should be ordered. Since most
rings require a 2 mm or 3 mm shank, a very snug fit of the gauge is
suggested.
2
As the basic Finger Mate shank opens
three full sizes, it will go over most knuckles
without difficulty.
However, if the knuckle is unusually large
in relation to the rest of the finger, it should
be measured to determine if it is more than
three sizes larger than the area where the
ring is worn. If so, a special 4-size opening
shank can be special ordered.
FOUR SIZE OPENING SHANK AVAILABLE
ON SPECIAL ORDER
A special shank that will open four sizes
can usually be provided on special order.
A small additional charge will be made.
INSTALLING FINGER MATE IN YOUR OWN SHOP
FINGER MATE SHANKS CAN BE INSTALLED BY ANY QUALIFIED
RETAIL JEWELER, MANUFACTURER, TRADE OR REPAIR SHOP
What makes one QUALIFIED?
Any jeweler who can remove and replace a plain
solid shank with a new one by gas soldering in the
normal manner, is qualified to attach Finger Mate
shanks.
In fact, Finger Mate shanks are easier to attach
because Finger Mate provides a special clamping
tool to aid the jeweler in the various cutting, filing,
fitting and soldering steps.
This special clamp assures that the jeweler will
cut the bridge portion of the Finger Mate shank
accurately and match it properly to the cut-off
portion of the ring being converted. The clamp
then holds the ring in perfect alignment with the
male hinge portions of the Finger Mate shank so
that they may be soldered without fear of anything
moving.
In order to guaranty uniformly high quality
workmanship and to protect the reputation of the
product, we limit the sale of Finger Mate shanks to
those jewelers who:
1. Install Finger Mate shanks according to
the procedure described in the instruction
booklet that accompanies the clamp.
2. Do so in the high quality workmanlike
manner established by the factory.
3. Use the special clamp for each and every
conversion in the manner prescribed.
The tool shown is required for the
installation. It is supplied with an
illustrated instruction booklet and
practice sample at moderate cost.
Do not order shanks as findings unless you or your
trade shop have the clamp, or unless you are ordering
the clamp along with the shanks. Our records indicate
all accounts who have the clamp.
If you do not have your own repair department, but
want to have your local trade shop attach Finger
Mate shanks for you, we must first determine if this
trade shop has the special clamp and indicate that in
our records for you.
Or, you may call us, and we will be glad to refer you
to a trade shop in your area who is installing Finger
Mate shanks.

DETERMINE THE PROPER SERIES SHANK REQUIRED
All Finger Mate shanks are available in either
the ”K” series which is a 3⁄4 shank or the “J” series which is a 1⁄2 shank.
BRIDGE
The ”K” series
3⁄4 shank
The ”J” series

MALE HINGE

SHANK
CATCH
The PRIMARY RULE in selecting the proper series is to use the “K” series (3⁄4 shank) whenever possible. Because of its
longer movable sections, the “K” series shanks are more easily grasped and operated by the wearer. Furthermore, all
of the “K” series shanks open three full sizes regardless of the finger size. The “K” series shank can be used on any
ring the top portion of which is less than 1⁄4 of the total circumference of the ring. If the top portion of the ring is greater
than 1⁄4 of the total circumference, but less than 1⁄2, then the “J” series (1⁄2 shank) should be used. The “J” series shank
does its job as well as the “K” series shank, but because of its shorter movable sections, there is slightly less to grasp
by the wearer in order to open. The very small finger sizes (3 to 4) of the “J” series open slightly less than the full three
sizes that the rest of the “J” series and all of the “K” series shanks do.
USE DIAGRAMS TO DETERMINE PROPER
SERIES NEEDED
The diagrams on pages 6 and 7 are exact size drawings of
the “K” series shanks in finger sizes from 3 to 13 showing
the length of the bridge portion of the shank that can be cut
to receive the cut-off portion of the ring being converted. If
the cut-off top portion fits within the area indicated as the
maximum limits on the diagram of the closed finger size
shank needed, then the “K” series shank should be used.
The diagrams have been drawn to allow sufficient metal
outside of the maximum limit lines yet still above the actual
hinge area for the jeweler to work conveniently.
If the cut-off top portion falls outside of the area indicated
as the maximum limits of the “K” series for the closed
finger size shank needed, the “K” series cannot be used.
Measure in the same manner on the diagrams drawn for
the “J” series shanks on page.
If the cut-off top portion now falls within the area indicated
as the maximum limits for the closed finger size shank
needed, the “J” series shank can be used. These diagrams
have also been drawn to allow sufficient metal outside of
the maximum limit lines yet still above the actual hinge
area for the jeweler to work conveniently.
If, however, the cut-off top portion still falls outside
the maximum limit area, not even the “J” series, (1/2
shank) can be used. It is suggested at this point that the
jeweler re-evaluate the ring in question and see if it can
be cut off closer to the top so as to make it small enough
to fall within the maximum limits. In many cases this
means just sacrificing only a small portion of the design
which, in any event, is usually not seen because it falls
so far down on the shank that it is between the fingers.
Or, explaining to the customer that one or more side
stones may need to be removed.
SPECIFYING “K” SERIES OR “J”
SERIES WHEN ORDERING
When ordering shanks, be sure to specify “K” series for
3⁄4 shanks or “J” series for 1⁄2 shanks.

DETERMINE THE PROPER WIDTH SHANK REQUIRED
Straight Widths – Basic Shanks
2mm
3mm4mm5mm6mm
After first determining the proper series shank required, either “K” or “J”, measure the width of the existing shank in
the area just above where the hinge of the Finger Mate shank will be.
ORDERING PROCEDURE
Order by specifying the series required, “K” or “J”, with the number following indicating the millimeter width of the
shank.

DETERMINE THE PROPER WIDTH SHANK REQUIRED
Tapered Shanks
Tapered shanks have tops that are wider than the bottoms. The shanks are supplied as a straight width bottom for
you to match the taper of the existing ring. Note that only the top can be tapered (since it is made of solid wire). The
bottoms, which are made of hollow tubing, cannot be tapered, blended or filed.

Select an appropriate shank with the right combination of narrow bottom and wider tapered top for the ring in
question.
Note, however, that while all the tapered shanks are available in both the “K” and “J” series, most applications
requiring tapered shanks usually require also the longer top portion available in the “J” series.
The 7 1/2 mm top may be ordered in a cut top (style B) to save on metal charges, as pictured above.
ORDERING PROCEDURE
The tapered shanks are ordered by specifying the “K” or “J” series required, the top and bottom widths and the finger
size. For instance, J 5 x 3 mm., size 6.
4mm top with
2mm bottom

71⁄2mm top with
6mm bottom
needed...
order J 71⁄2 x 6
in proper size
All of the tapered shank tops are made to be filed down and blended into the customer’s ring.
COMBINING TWO RINGS ON A SINGLE SHANK
In selecting a shank on which to combine two rings, the same
procedure is followed. The combined width of the two rings
to be joined is measured. The shank selected can be slightly
narrower than this combined width in order that the finished
result of the two rings together on one shank will be neat and
graceful.

Under-bridges for height, support, or siZing
If the customer’s ring is not as high as the Finger Mate top (2 mm.), or is
too weak to support the operation of the mechanism, or the top cannot be
properly sized first, an under-bridge may be required. The under-bridge
is fashioned from the Finger Mate top.
DETERMINE THE PROPER HEIGHT SHANK REQUIRED
The standard height of all Finger Mate shanks is 2 mm. regardless of width or series. However, a special
HIGH TOP shank is available in the 2 mm. and 3 mm. widths in both the “K” and “J” series for those special
applications where it is required.
Most rings use
the standard shank
Some require the HIGH
TOP shank
K series

high top
The HIGH TOP shank is used in those applications where the end piece or design of the ring being
converted is too high to accommodate the standard shank which is 2 mm. high all the way around. The
HIGH TOP shank should only be used in those cases where it is obvious that the top portion of the standard
height shank (2 mm.) will be too low to blend into the customer’s ring properly. This does not mean that the
HIGH TOP shank should be ordered in every case where the customer’s ring exceeds 2 mm. in the area
where it is being joined to the Finger Mate shank. On the contrary, a slight degree of blending is desired.
Only when there is an obvious, large difference should the HIGH TOP be considered.
This also depends on how sharply the blend must be made. If the blend can be done gradually, perhaps
the standard shank can be used. If the blend must be made over a relatively short span, then the HIGH
TOP shank may be the answer. Using the “J” series (1⁄2 shank) for an application normally calling for a “K”
series (3⁄4 shank) provides a longer top with which to work and may eliminate the need for a HIGH TOP.
The particular ring in question and the finger size required will also be factors in determining whether to
use the “K” series HIGH TOP or perhaps the “J” series in the standard height.
When the special HIGH TOP shank is required, add the designation HI to the stock number of shank. K-2
mm. HI or J-3 mm. HI, etc.

Sending Rings to the Factory for Installation
OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING WHEN SENDING
RINGS FOR SHANK INSTALLATIONS.
When sending your rings to the Finger Mate factory (or to a
trade shop) for a custom shank application, please observe the
following:
Measure the size snugly with the Finger Mate sizing gauge or
Mint Set to assure a proper fit. Remember, there is a 2 position
catch to allow for a slight swelling during the summer.
1. DO NOT cut off the old shank. It will be cut off at the precise
angle and position required and the scrap will be returned to
you.
2. Include a description of the ring noting any broken or missing
stones, and its valuation for return mail.
While your property is on our premises, it is
covered by our Jeweler’s Block Policy.
Since the round trip insurance charges can be quite
expensive on highly valued rings, we suggest that you
remove particularly expensive center stones and send us just
the mounting portion. Your cost for removing and resetting
will often be far less then your cost for the round trip postage
and insurance.
3. While every precaution is taken to protect your merchandise,
our liability is limited to the value of the portion we add. It is
suggested that particularly valuable, fragile or badly flawed
stones be removed and the mounting alone be sent to us.
In addition, colored gemstones and semi-precious stones
should also be removed. While we will be happy to have the
stones removed and reset for you after the Finger Mate shank
has been applied, this service can be performed only at your
risk.

CONFIRMATIONS SENT ON ALL WORK
A confirmation is sent to you by Finger Mate describing the ring
received, the work to be done, the charge to be made and the
approximate delivery time. Work is then begun immediately
unless you have requested an estimate, or there are other
questions or problems. If so, you will be advised.
ESTIMATES GIVEN UPON REQUEST
If you are not certain that a shank can be applied to a particular
ring or what the charge will be, send it to us for an estimate
which we will be happy to furnish before proceeding with the
job.

Sizing tips
TWO POSITION CATCH FOR COMFORT
The catch on the Finger Mate shank has two positions. The shank
has been designed to be worn in the fully closed catch position.
However, on those occasions when the finger swells, during
pregnancy for instance, or on very hot days, a second position
is provided which is about 1⁄2 size larger than the fully closed
position. When measuring a finger under conditions when it
may be already temporarily swollen, judgment should be used
to order the shanks somewhat smaller than the gauge indicates.
The customer can wear the ring in the second position, slightly
open, until the swelling disappears and then wear it in the fully
closed position which is the proper size.

Note: 2 position catch
TRY THE SHANK ON
BEFORE ATTACHING
RETURN RING TO FACTORY
FOR CORRECTION
For those jewelers who are ordering loose findings
and attaching the shank themselves, you can let the
customer try the shank on before you attach it to
her ring. Of course, you’ll need to explain that this
is only the finding, and the customer will have to
make another visit to the store, but you will have the
advantage of knowing you have the right size before
installing the shank.
When a sizing error has been made, the complete
ring should be returned to the Finger Mate factory.
No attempt should be made by any other jeweler to
alter the size of a finished shank. Once a Finger Mate
shank has been attached, NO SOLDERING CAN BE
ATTEMPTED. If soldering heat is applied, the temper
of the gold spring will be lost. Furthermore, there
is a gold insert soldered inside both female ends
of the hinges to make the tubing solid in this area.
Soldering heat applied after the male and female
portions of the hinges have been united, may cause
this solder to flow, permanently sealing the hinges.
USE GAUGE PROPERLY...
FIT SNUGLY!
Most sizing errors (95% of all errors recorded) have
been of the “too large” category. Rarely (only 5%) are
sizes requested “too small.” Careful and accurate use
of the sizing gauge will reduce errors to a minimum,
but errors will occasionally still be made, unfortunately.
Sizes must be taken very snugly; otherwise, rings will
still twist and turn and you customers will wonder why
they spent the money to have shanks attached at all.
Finger Mate will correct sizing errors by disassembling where necessary, and re-machining the catch
area to reduce the size, or by adding one leg only of
a shank to increase the size. Minimum charges will
be made for these repairs. In cases where shanks
have been ruined by improper attempts at sizing,
no allowance will be made.
Note: SPECIAL GAUGE CANNOT BE MEASURED AGAINST A RING SIZE MANDREL:
Because of the design of the special gauge, it cannot be measured itself on the ring size mandrel. The flexible band
is made to conform to the soft flesh of a finger, while the plastic supports on either side of the band insure that it will
conform while maintaining its basic round shape. These supports prohibit the band from resting on the mandrel as
it would on a finger and the band cannot, therefore, slide to a position on the mandrel that will register the same
size as indicated on the gauge. Nevertheless, the overall circumference as measured by the gauge is exactly the
same as established for the standard ring sizes.

RECOMMENDED RETAIL SELLING PRICES
We produce two price lists. One shows net cost prices at various metal price levels. The other shows
suggested retail prices which are keystone.
However, the actual selling price should be determined by the retailer, giving consideration to the
following:
1.Is the sale of a new ring involved? If so, the Finger Mate shank might be included at a very low price
or without additional charge at all.
2.Is satisfying a customer the issue? Is it perhaps one to whom a ring was recently sold but who now
has trouble getting it to fit properly? If so, a substantial price consideration is surely in order.
3.Is a remodeling involved from which scrap was retained? If so, a less-than-keystone price would be
appropriate.
Remember to include a Finger Mate in your proposal whenever you are re-modeling a ring. Finger Mate
shanks add real value and as long as the ring is already in the shop, it’s the perfect time to add a Finger
Mate!
Also, remember that Finger Mate shanks are ordered one at a time, as needed. Therefore, since there is
no investment in inventory, your pricing should be more in line with your “special orders/repair services”
than with your “regular” inventory items.
THE WARRANTY
A small service charge is made for replacing
the catch and spring mechanism should it ever
fail. There is no time limitation. See Extended
Limited Warranty or current Price List for full
details. Minimum additional charges are made
for any other repairs, resizing or refinishing
when required.

ENVELOPE ENCLOSURES – Customer Take-aways
Envelope enclosures are your least
expensive and most productive means
of advertising when they are enclosed
with statements, letters or invoices
being mailed to your customers.
Furthermore, if placed at strategic
locations in the store, the ring
department or repair department
for example, they will surely arouse
customer interest and stimulate sales
not only for Finger Mate shanks, but for
new rings as well.
Finger Mate provides these colorful
envelope enclosures either blank or
imprinted with your logo, name and
address. Half of the cost is paid by
Finger Mate as part of its Co-operative
Advertising Program.
