2015 December Newsletter
Legend has it that candy canes first came into custom in 1670 when a choirmaster handed out white
sugar sticks to help keep the children quiet during the very long Christmas church service. The sticks were
bent into a “J” to represent the crooks of the shepherds who visited at the Nativity. By 1900 red stripes were
added to represent the blood Jesus shed on the cross while the white signifies his purity. The now traditional
peppermint flavouring is understood to represent hyssop, a biblical purifying herb. That’s a lot of meaning
packed into a familiar childhood treat.

Please do plan to attend the giant Rummage Sale at the Community Centre on November 21st. This event is
being organized by the good folks from the Mennonite Brethren Church as a fundraiser for The Yarrow Volunteer Society. They wanted to know if we had any projects underway that could use a boost. We got together
and discussed what might be a good community project to start. Something that we feel could be useful for the
whole community is a covered dining pavilion in Pioneer Park. Do you have other ideas? Please bring them
along to the sale and we’ll compile a list of worthy uses for the funds raised. Rummage Sale Page 5
Our annual Christmas Craft Fair is the following Saturday. There will be over 40 tables laden with all manner of
delightful gift ideas. Plan on staying for a hot lunch too as a concession will be available in the small meeting
room. Full details Christmas Craft Fair Page 13.
December 5th is the day all the kiddies in town are anticipating as You Know Who will be at the hall in person
to listen to their Christmas wishes. Songstress McKenzie Jade will be singing for us and several elves are
baking cookies for the kids to decorate. More details Breakfast With Santa Page 4.
The very next evening the Yarrow United Mennonite Church is holding a Christmas singalong. It sounds like a
great way to kick off the season. Community Carol Sing Page 6.
And the very next evening after that the members of our fire brigade will be canvassing the town for donations
to the Salvation Army Food Bank. This annual event of flashing lights and blaring sirens has become a familiar
tradition as we welcome the firefighters to our doors. If they don’t make it to your house please feel free to
drop your donation off at the Fire Hall. Fire Brigade Food Drive Page 18.
What are you doing new year’s, New Year’s Eve? Plan to join the KO s at the Community Centre for a rocking
good time. Tickets are available now at Allenby’s Hardware, Rivers Restaurant, Rainbow Food & Gas as well
as Hot Rods And Classics all on Central Road. Full details New Year’s Eve Mexican Fiesta Page 6.
Need a mid-winter party too? The Society For Positive Living has booked our hall for an evening of food,
music and comedy. Tickets are 50% sold for this event which is a fundraiser for that charity which supports
persons living with immunity issues. Details Boom Boom Dine And Dance Page 11.
There are lots of Yuletide events going on here in Yarrow in the coming weeks. Please do have a look around

BROWNE CREEK WETLANDS UPDATE
Victor Froese
Perhaps the most noteworthy feature completed this summer is the “riffle” (a kind
of fish ladder) at the Street Creek Bridge. At present it is the best place to observe
Chum and a little later, Coho wending their way up the Browne Creek Wetlands to
complete their 4-year life cycle. A related feature is the Trestle Channel and the
Trestle Channel Bridge. The randomly placed logs are to discourage ATVs travelling along the spawning channels.
Other work completed this summer is the water intake for the Trestle Channel and
the surfacing of the trail parallel to the dyke heading eastward towards Berman
Road. The bridges, trail work, and signage are primarily the work of the City of
Chilliwack and the Chilliwack Rotary Club. The channel work and replanting of
disturbed areas is sponsored by DFO and the FVW Coalitions.
Looking forward to the next five years, the plan is to extend the trails westward
toward Wilson Road and then the dyke to the Keith Wilson Road bridge. Eastward
extensions towards the newly announced Vedder River bridge (to replace the current bridge) are also under consideration. Ultimately the goal is to “Loop the Vedder” with a network of trails.
Many will have seen the development of the wetlands on the west side of the railroad tracks. It is expected that the Bergman Bridge will be improved with the addition of walkways and railings on both sides. That will be funded with a special
Rotary grant.
