The Long Island Single Sailor’s Association .. Our 28th Year Dedicated to Sailing and Boating
Commodore’s Corner
Howard Marks
We’ve had a hot summer, don’t ya think? Humid. Too
hot for the garden, but that’s another manual. September should help cool things off a bit. In fact, for those
who can go back deep into the heart of LISSA memory,
September’s always been a great sailing month on the
Long Island Sound. Cooler and windier, it is the best
month to be on the water, anywhere. We truly hope that
those who still aspire to go boating do so, before the
universe takes us back home.
Now, the universe is too complicated to cover in the
LISSA Jib, so we will boil it down some to a few important points:
Point 1) The due date for the $10.00 Change of Watch
deposit is Wednesday, Sept., 7th. For those who wish to
sit with specific people, Billy has asked me to please
make sure that you include the names of these people
on your check. He will put together tables of 10, as requested by you. When the table group is finished, he
will move on to the next table. Please understand, this
is on a first request / first serve basis. Send your check,
made out to LISSA, to Billy Vassel, today.
Point 2) Carol Sauer’s Summer Kayak Trip is scheduled for the last week of September. (SEE FLYER)
More importantly, however, to reserve your kayak, you
must pay for it by September 9th. It’s $40.00 for a single
kayak and $50.00 for a double. Make check out to
“Eagle’s Neck Paddling Co.” Send to Carol Sauer to
arrive by Sept. 9th. We ask that you honor this cut-off
date. This is a BYOE event. Bring something to share
for the table. After the kayak adventure, we are sure
you will all enjoy hanging out on Carol’s great lawn to
finish the day. Ask Skip to shoot off his potato gun.
Point 3) We ask that you join us for our next social extravaganza at Nocello’s on Sept. 8th. Rick C will be
spinning the vibe and Tommy Moffitt will be crooning.
You really don’t want to miss this one. Tommy’s been
gettin’ good. And, as you will be there at the social to
dance, you are all invited to the dance floor while he’s
singing, to dance!!
Point 4) Birthday Babies this month will be at the Oar,
in Patchogue. You will get a choice of 3 appetizers, 3
entrees, desert and coffee. Great outdoor venue, on
the dock, if weather allows. The cost will be $38.59
which INCLUDES tax and tip. The OAR has been a
favorite for many years. We’re looking for a good turnout to celebrate the month. Must call Howard to reserve
at: 631 226-1575.
There are 2 more socials this month, outside of LISSA,
in case you’re interested. Check the calendar and
Coming About and George’s column.
I went to an interesting outdoor concert last week at
Morgan Park, in Glen Cove. It was Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary. He’s 78 now, a bit insane, and hasn’t lost anything in the way of show presence. He sings
about the same things he used to sing about in the
60’s… peace, love, hammering out justice and, the
whimsical Puff. But he also talks a lot. He speaks
about the tumult, about the tragedy of the times, the
mass murders, the harsh language and the disrespect
of the human condition, still pushing that classic liberal
folk singer’s lament, claiming the solution to the world’s
problems is to simply LOVE everybody, from every
country, from every background. Would that it could be
that simple? He speaks about the children and how
they have been so corrupted by society’s transgressions, assigning a sort of communal guilt to the rest of
us for those who have gone astray. “NO, Mr. Yarrow,” I
say. “Most children grow up fine and lead a good life
along the straight and narrow, despite the harshness of
the political rhetoric.” Sadly, Peter Yarrow has been
fighting a losing battle his whole life, as have we.
Peace IS a societal battle worth fighting, but how to win
it has eluded mankind since the beginning of time. Peter Yarrow’s “Hammer of Justice” has gone weak. Perhaps love is NOT the answer. Perhaps we need a new
war cry and, maybe, Yarrow did offer us one hopeful
moment that night, a shout-out from the heart of his enlightened insanity. “The children are listening!” he cried.
“The children are listening,” he whispered. I will always
think about this.
See you all – Out There!!
Peace and Love to All

On Friday, September 16th. I am scheduling a Happy Hour at the Salt and Barrel located
at : 61 West Main Street at the corner of Park Avenue in Bay Shore. It just opened in May
this year and is owned by the Flynn Family of Lobster Cruise fame. There is ample parking
1/2 block north on Park Avenue. They do not open until 5:00 PM, so don't get there too
early. They have an extensive sea food menu and apps. AND a full stock of exotic BOURBONS. The bar is next to the oyster station and seats 25 also there's more tables and
stools in the bar area. Again, I need at least 3 members to respond, otherwise, I will cancel
and go to my favorite Nassau H.H. for $5.00 hot buffet and 1/2 price Makers.
We had 17 Lobster Lovers at the Madison Steak (and Lobster?) House on August 17.
When the lobsters came out, they came out fast and furious and we all made good use of
our bibs and crackers.

Carol’s Kayak Trip in Southold
$40.00/single; $50.00/double. See flyer for details.
George outdid himself on this one. We've been to lobster
fests before with George and we always enjoyed. But this
time the venue was the Madison Steak House and the
lobster dinner was special. Plump, meaty crustaceans
with excellent corn on the cob and cole slaw washed down
with suds and grape. George worked with the owner to
keep the cost at $20, which is exceptional for lobsters of
the size served. Kudos, George; we'll do this any time you
can set it up. Will and Ms. T
Thanks to Peter and Kathy for the August Birthday Babies
celebration held at the Bay Shore Olive Garden. Plenty of
good Italian eats with enough to take home for tomorrow. As always, the company is the important thing and
the conversation never stopped. Next month the dinner will
be at the Oar in Patchogue on the river. Join us when
Howard is the host at this favorite restaurant. Terry & Will
Another day on the beach with Carol Sauer at her Southold
retreat. Oh so hot a day we had, with a monumental, God
given breeze to keep us cool. Lots to eat and drink under
the LISSA umbrella shade, with the Peconic Bay at our
footsteps. Great day to see some of the long time members chatting about clamming rights and new motors and
summer boating. A great THANK YOU to Carol Sauer for
letting us use her private beach and gather on her back
porch after sunset to finish the day. It was way too windy to
start a fire. Blessed be her. …..Howard
