MAKING A DIFFERENCE PROVIDENCE ST. MEL SCHOOL 2013 ANNUAL REPORT A LETTER FROM PAUL J. ADAMS III, PRESIDENT & JEANETTE DIBELLA, PRINCIPAL prospective families and their students, to our supporters, to guests, to anyone who T oenters our school, we welcome you to experience the difference that distinguishes Providence St. Mel School. Visitors who come to our school, walk our hallways, stand in our classrooms, and watch our students and teachers invariably remark: This school feels different from what I expected. They see firsthand what sets us apart from other urban schools: The joy of learning is evident in the classrooms and on the faces of our students, from the preschooler to the high school senior. Students are motivated to learn, and teachers are passionate to educate. Paul J. Adams III President We know that we could not achieve what we do without you. Thank you. We are so very grateful that you recognize and support what makes us different and successful. Unlike far too many other schools, Providence St. Mel creates and fosters a rich learning environment that is intentional in efforts to inspire and increase student performance. In place is a rigorous academic curriculum with high expectations for all students to succeed, despite where they start with their learning. Teachers show genuine concern for students as individuals, encouraging students to believe in themselves and in their abilities to learn, creating an overall positive learning community. Providence St. Mel School, this exceptional college-preparatory school, is different — and it makes a difference. It makes a difference in the lives of the students we teach and for their hopeful families. It makes a difference in the lives of our teachers and staff, who are wholly committed to our mission of preparing students for higher education, satisfying careers, and bright futures. But for all the talk of difference, this year has been no different than any other year. We do the same thing that we have been doing from the very beginning, for nearly four decades. We work hard. We establish high academic goals, which we follow, and impressive goals, which we achieve. We insist on accountability for students as well as teachers. We challenge all of our students to excel despite the odds. We prepare them to compete globally, to succeed, and to contribute meaningfully to their professions, their families, and their communities. Jeanette DiBella Principal Moreover, we produce well-rounded individuals who can and do make a difference. They are taking this place, this time, and this people, and are creating a better place, a better time, and a better people. Thank you for believing in and supporting the difference that is Providence St. Mel School. Paul J. Adams III President 1 Jeanette DiBella Principal “I will always remember my first year at Providence St. Mel when I realized that this is the place where I am going to stay because this is a place where I can truly make a difference. At Providence St. Mel we change lives forever, and I know that every day we make a difference and improve a child’s life for the better.” – Sharon Mixon, 5th Grade Teacher As a teacher, Sharon Mixon has been making positive impact on Providence St. Mel students for more than twenty-six years. “At Providence St. Mel we change lives forever, and I know that every day we make a difference...” “I am a role model and mentor in addition to being a teacher; I always try to set an example for my students. Whenever I teach a class, I try to make sure my students completely master the subject. I want them to be the best possible students — the best algebra students or the best calculus students around. I have an incredible amount of respect for this group of young people.” – Eric Hendricks, High School Math Teacher Eric Hendricks is one of Providence St. Mel’s most outstanding educators because he is both demanding and inspiring. Teaching math to Chicago’s brightest young minds for over fifteen years, he is a true difference maker 2 A LETTER FROM MICHAEL D. O’HALLERAN, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and their families, O nandbehalf the proud graduates of the Class of 2013, I thank you for supporting this remarkable school. You helped make the year another phenomenal success. It is only with your financial commitment that Providence St. Mel has been able to flourish and achieve this remarkable level of sustained academic excellence. Throughout its history, Providence St. Mel has been described as The School that Refused to Die, A Beacon of Hope, The Hard Work School, The School that Works, and, most recently, A Model for Urban Education. Each label captures the essence of this school. Each attests its ability to instill in students the fundamental values of responsibility, self-discipline, self-reliance, self-respect, and perseverance. Michael D. O’Halleran The Chairman of the Board of Trustees Commitment, academic excellence, and hard work do matter, and they do make a difference. Providence St. Mel was founded to address a problem prevalent in far too many urban communities: the need for a quality college-preparatory education, an education that can break the cycle of poverty and dependence and can lift children from bleak, challenging circumstances and prepare them for lives of productivity, success, and hope. Our school stands to help students in need, students with promise. Yet for every child our school helps, there are many more deserving children who want this exemplary education. Hundreds are unable to attend our school simply because their families cannot afford the very modest tuition. With your continued support, Providence St. Mel can help more of these students. This is why your contributions have been so important and why your renewed support would be so vital: You make this education possible. I encourage you to read this report to see the difference that Providence St. Mel is making — and to recognize the difference that you are making — in the young lives of our students. Because of such caring individuals as you, these hardworking, highly motivated, and promising students are fulfilling their potential. On behalf of the entire Providence St. Mel community, especially our determined students, I thank you for your unhesitating commitment and continuing support. “You make this education possible.” 3 “This school can transform any student into the best person they can be. The teachers here encourage everybody and really help all the students. At Providence St. Mel I feel a great deal of accomplishment, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to attend this school.” – Ty T., Class of 2020 Ty T. is a sixth grade student who began attending Providence St. Mel in the third grade. Ty was a C student at his previous school, but thanks to the Providence St. Mel difference, he is a member of the National Elementary Honor Society, performing at the top of his class and is already looking forward to attending the university of his choice. “This school can transform any student into the best person they can be.” “On the West Side, a lot of people know me as a basketball player, but at Providence St. Mel, I am more than just an athlete. I feel complete at this school because I know I can compete on the court and in the classroom. I have friends that go to other schools, and sometimes they comment that they think I have too much homework. I tell them that hard work pays off, and I know I am prepared for college.” – Tevin K., Class of 2014 Tevin K. began attending Providence St. Mel his freshman year of high school. Now a senior, Tevin is an all-star on the varsity basketball team and in his classes. Tevin fully appreciates the positive difference Providence St. Mel has had on him and his sure-to-be bright future. 4 COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE ESHE H., CLASS OF 2013 “On my first day in college, I realized that everyone at Brown is smart. The professors know that as well, so it was very evident that to succeed you will have to work hard, study, and prove that you can earn the grade that you want. Compared to some of my cohorts, I am extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to attend such an amazing institution for high school, because crucial skills for success and a passion for learning has been instilled into me. I had a solid academic foundation at Providence St. Mel and adjusting to the work at Brown was not a hard process. If I did not have the same high school experience, I am not certain that I would be able to say that the transition into college would be the same.” – Eshe H., Class of 2013 Eshe H. began attending Providence St. Mel School in seventh grade. She is a remarkable member of the class of 2013 who earned the top grade point average for her class, competed in sports, and participated in various extracurricular activities including Jazz Band and Summer Opportunity of A Lifetime. Eshe is an outstanding example of the drive and determination Providence St. Mel imparts to our students. Thanks to the Providence St. Mel difference, we know that Eshe will continue to impress as she completes her undergraduate degree at Brown University. 100% of Providence St. Mel graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities for 35 consecutive years 65% of the Class of 2013 was accepted to one or more top tier universities earning more than $5 million in scholarships 50% 5 of graduates since 2001 have been acepted to colleges and universities rated by U.S. News and World Report to be among “tier one” institutions in the country Below is a list of the Class of 2013’s acceptances to Tier One & Ivy League schools, as ranked by US News and World Report: Bates College Baylor University Boston College Brown University Carleton College Carnegie Mellon University Case Western Reserve University College of Wooster DePaul University DePauw University Drexel University Fisk University Fordham University Howard University Illinois Institute of Technology Indiana University – Bloomington Iowa State University Kansas State University Knox College Lake Forest College Lawrence University Loyola University Chicago Marquette University Miami University of Ohio Michigan State University Morehouse College Northeastern University Northwestern University Oglethorpe University Ohio State University Pennsylvania State University Princeton University Purdue University Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Southern Methodist University Spelman College St. Louis University St. Mary’s University of Minnesota Syracuse University Temple University United States Air Force Academy University at Albany SUNY University of Buffalo University of Chicago University of Connecticut University of Denver University of Houston University of Illinois – Chicago University of Illinois – Urbana University of Iowa University of Kansas University of Kentucky University of Maryland University of Miami University of Minnesota - Twin Cities University of Missouri University of Notre Dame University of Pennsylvania University of San Diego University of San Francisco University of Tennessee University of Wisconsin – Madison Vanderbilt University Washington State University Washington University in St. Louis Wesleyan University Xavier University of Louisiana 6 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AT A GLANCE Writing Competitions: Ammaarah Y. With your gift today, you can make a difference in the life of a child! Our tuition is among the lowest for all independent schools in Chicago. We keep our tuition modest so that we can offer to students, who otherwise would not have the opportunity, a superior college-preparatory education. But event this low tuition is more than our struggling families can afford. Families recognize the quality and promise of a Providence St. Mel education. They pay what they can—and all families must pay something—towards their child’s education. But this amount seldom covers the tuition and never covers the true, full cost of education, which is more than double our tuition. Only with the help of such caring supporters as you can Providence St. Mel continue to keep tuition low, offer indispensable scholarships, meet operating expenses, and provide key academic and enrichment programs that enable students to thrive, excel, and succeed. Please join our other partners today and be as generous as you can: Click:Visit www.psmnow.com and click on Donate Now to submit your online contribution easily, conveniently, and securely. This paperless method saves postage and printing costs! Mail: Use the enclosed self-addressed envelope to mail your check made payable to Providence St. Mel School. Call: For more information on how you can support Providence St. Mel, call the Development Office at 773.722.7756. Your gift can make a difference for one life. A matching gift can make a difference for another. Many employers will match charitable contributions made by their employees, retirees, and sometimes even spouses. Please check with your employer. Gift matching is an easy, simple, and powerful way to increase the impact of your donation. Providence St. Mel also appreciates gifts of goods and services that directly support our programs and facilities. Every gift, no matters its size, can make a difference! All of us at Providence St. Mel thank you for your much-needed support. 29 “I WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!” - Tinia J., Class of 2026 30 PRESORTED NONPROFIT ORG US POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 7658 CHICAGO, IL. Providence St. Mel School Office of Development 119 South Central Park Blvd. Chicago, IL. 60624 www.psmnow.com Mission Statement At Providence St. Mel, we believe. We believe in the creation of inspired lives produced by the miracle of hard work. We are not frightened by the challenges of reality, but believe that we can change our conception of this world and our place within it. So we WORK, PLAN, BUILD, and DREAM– in that order. We believe that one must earn the right to dream. Our talent, discipline, and integrity will be our contribution to a new world; because we believe we can take this place, this time and this people, and make a better place, a better time, and a better people. With God’s help, we will either find a way or make one.
