WE ARE OMSI
we are omsi o r e g o n m u s e u m o f s c i e n c e a n d d o n o r i n d u s t r y r e p o r t 2010 responsibility & integrity For more than 65 years, OMSI has operated without state or local revenue for our ongoing operations, relying instead on our members, sponsorships from corporations, and the generous support of individuals and foundations. Though OMSI has not been immune to the effects of the weakened economy, we have weathered the storm. In this year of fiscal challenges, we have emerged a stronger, more focused organization. As always, we are managing your investment with responsibility and integrity. We remain true to our mission of bringing quality science learning experiences to people of all ages. OMSI is an institution that awakens the imagination and b r i n g s t o reality the dreams of our children. We are so proud that people see OMSI as a place of enduring value. Our attendance and memberships continue to grow despite a weak economy. We are also proud of our community partnerships, and being a showcase for exciting innovations in sustainability and renewable energy. Our traveling programs continue to provide a unique brand of the OMSI experience to children in rural and underserved areas, and every week our halls are filled with school groups, families, and adults participating in dynamic programs that range from Science Playground to hands-on science labs to OMSI After Dark. This year we are hosting several featured exhibits, including the OMSI-built Design Zone: Behind the Scenes, which showcases exciting, hands-on applications of algebra, and Identity: An Exhibition of You, an exhibit about genetics and DNA. Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science will unearth the hidden stories and artifacts of that intriguing and mysterious civilization. SAMSON, the magnificent 39-foot Tyrannosaurus rex fossil, continues its worldwide museum debut through December. Thank you for your confidence in what we do. Together we can build a stronger, brighter future for everyone. Visitors to the exhibit, based on the popular CBS television series, were invited to play the role of forensic scientist and help solve a crime using real world forensic techniques. From DNA and firearms analysis to forensic anthropology and toxicology, CSI: The Experience presented a one-of-a-kind, immersive, and hands-on science learning opportunity. OMSI’s fall exhibit took a close look at one of the most common human emotions, fear. Scream: The Science of Fear took an experiential and holistic view of fear, examining the physiological, neurobiological, and sociological aspects of this misunderstood emotion. FY10’s final exhibit, Space: A Journey to Our Future, explored the past, present, and future of space travel. The exhibit offered space exploration enthusiasts the opportunity to touch a piece of Mars, see a real Moon rock up close, take a spin on a space bike, and tour a full-scale future lunar habitat. PLANETARIU M H IG H LIG H TS The Kendall Planetarium continued to be a leader in astronomy science throughout FY10. Two new dome shows were added to its lineup: Ice Worlds and Journey to the Stars. Ice Worlds explains how the existence of ice shapes the landscape and natural systems on other planets and moons in our solar system. Journey to the Stars explores the birth, life, and death of stars, and why they are important to us. FY10 also proved to be a banner year for planetarium astronomy events. Former “OMSI kid” and current NASA astronaut Dr. Mike Barratt sent photos to OMSI while on the International Space Station. The photos he took were shown as part of OMSI’s Starry Nights Live presentations. Dr. Barratt also took time out from his Space Station duties to speak to OMSI visitors live via satellite for a special event. Other planetarium event highlights included a viewing of the LCROSS mission’s impact on the Moon, a speaking engagement with NASA historian Andrew Chaikin, and the worldwide Space Day celebration where visitors learned about the International Space Station, meteorites, Moon rocks, and the latest NASA/JPL programs. S o m e t h i n g O l d A n d S o m e t h i n g N e w I n O M SI ’ s E a r t h Science Hall The 66-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton known as SAMSON made its worldwide museum debut in OMSI’s Earth Science Hall in late December. SAMSON was discovered in South Dakota in 1987 and is one of the three most complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimens in existence. Close to 60% of SAMSON’s original bones, including its nearly complete skull, will be on exhibit through the end of 2010. OMSI partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to bring an exciting new permanent exhibit to the Earth Science Hall called Science On a Sphere (SOS). Science On a Sphere is a six-foot suspended globe that uses computers and video projectors to display dynamic animated images of the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, global warming trends, and hurricane paths, as well as the surfaces of the Sun, Mars, and Moon. OMSI After Dark and Teen Nights consistently reached non-traditional audiences while annual events such as the Agate and Mineral Show, Shell Show, and Reptile Show continued to be visitor favorites. Hubble told the story of an inspiring journey into space to perform important repairs and upgrades on the Hubble Space Telescope. Reflecting OMSI’s commitment to sustainability, the museum hosted two looks at alternative transportation: a sneak peek at the Nissan Leaf electric car and a chance to try a hydrogen fuel cell car. Additional FY10 event highlights included a special celebration for the USS Blueback’s 50th anniversary, OHSU’s Brain Fair, and a LEGO building challenge. Journey to Mecca portrayed the amazing story of Ibn Battuta, the greatest explorer of the Old World, following his first pilgrimage from Tangier to Mecca in 1325. Deep Sea took visitors on an immersive, underwater adventure deep below the ocean’s surface to witness never-before-seen, up-close encounters with a wide range of exotic D e d i c at i o n t o S u s ta i n a b i l i t y In FY10, OMSI received a $2.3-million-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help fund a $3.3-million-dollar project on renewable energy and sustainability undersea life. education. The project, titled Sustainability: Promoting Sustainable Decision Making in Informal Education, will include a 1,500-square-foot, bilingual, permanent exhibit in OMSI’s FY10 also saw the return of the OMNIMAX Film Festival presenting visitors with 21 Sustainability, Metro Regional Government, Portland Community College, Verde, and the Coalition for a Livable Future. remarkable films, including some rarely played classics, all designed to make the most of the IMAX giant screen experience. OMSI’s partners in development of the sustainability project include the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and OMSI also received a $421,549 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for several projects designed to help further the museum’s energy and environment initiatives. Included is funding for program development utilizing NASA data for OMSI’s Science On a Sphere exhibit, and the purchase of two Magic Planets, a type of portable Science On a Sphere.
