Class Day, a strong Digger tradition recognizing graduating seniors and their long list of accomplishments, was held Wednesday at the Lead-Deadwood High School auditorium. In his opening address, Principal Nick Gottlob congratulated the class for their varied and impressive contributions, encouraging them to continue their efforts. “Whatever your life's goals are, I would encourage you to do one simple thing. Maximize your contributions,” Gottlob said. “Now, as a young adult, it is up to you to decide how to contribute to yourself, your community, your family and how to contribute to the common good … Now you have the obligation to contribute to society.” The highest ranking student of the Class of 2010, Joel Fundaun, a Regent Scholar who will attend the University of Wyoming, was recognized for and supported by nearly 30 scholarships and awards worth nearly $16,000. In 2007, she was arrested and convicted of embezzling money from a casino in Deadwood. She spent a night in jail and her husband, who was unaware that she had a problem, picked her up and began looking into treatment. “One thing about gambling addiction is that you learn to lie,” she said. “cou tell one after another. Before you know it, you're in such a hole that you can't dig your way out.” Rene had a gambling addiction. She remembered mostly the low points. “cou don't really sleep much,” she said. “cou're constantly thinking about how to pay those bills, and yet still have money to gamble. cou sleep very restlessly … I have a son and grandkids, and birthdays would come, and I wouldn't have the money to buy them presents. I felt like a horrible grandmother.” Rene didn't use to gamble unless it was with her husband, and they were out just to have fun. But gambling went from being a recreational activity to a habit after she started working at a casino. She remembered the adrenaline rush of winning, but also the predominant feeling of hollowness and loss of control. “There's so many emotions that you go through,” she said. A special presentation was made to school secretaries Lori Aberle and Mary Schumacher on behalf of the Class of 2010. “They don't get enough recognition and they're pretty much the moms of the entire school,” Fundaun said, prior to presenting the two with flowers. This year's Digger class motto is “Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.” Their class flower is the orange rose, their class song, “Time of cour Life,” and their colors maroon and gold. The class of 2010 commencement address will be given at graduation on Sunday, May 23 by Andy Shaw and the class presenter is Mary Schumacher. The entire first floor of the parking garage will be turned into leased parking. The rate for leased parking will now be ]25 per month, payable in advance. If the parking lease is paid in full for one year, the lessee is entitled to one free month of parking and pays for only 11 months. The new lease rate and requirements become effective June 14. Commissioner Rose Burns asked what will happen if there are empty leased spots. City Administrator Mike Stahl said that the spots can't be used unless they are paid for. As of May 17, any current existing parking leases will not be required to abide by the newly adopted regula- Burnin' on the dance floor More than 60 Dance Alley dancers presented the condensed, but still red-hot version of their year-end recital to the LeadDeadwood Elementary students Tuesday. The resolution also calls for two, two-hour parking restrictions to be placed on the north side of West Main Street across from Lead City Hall and on the south side of West Main Street, west of Lead City Hall. Proper parking signs will be placed delineating the restricted areas. Stahl said that Lead Police Chief John Wainman has conducted a thorough inventory of the signs up and down Main Street and the two city officials are working together to implement an improvement plan for the two-hour parking signage up and down Main Street. Spearfish April fire report !" S$%$ &'C) !la$k '(ll) *(+,--r SPEARFISH * Although, the month of April was not extremely busy for volunteers at the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department, crews have been spending a lot of time doing extra preparations in case of fires and other incidents. Fire Chief Wallace White addressed the Spearfish City Council during its meeting on May 17 with a breakdown on the happenings that have occurred FIRE REPORT over the past month. “For the month of April, we had 56 active members and it was kind-of a slow month for us,” White said. “We had nine calls for service, two wildland fires and four search and rescue calls. Our average response time for the calls * from the time we were paged out to the first unit on scene * was three minutes and seven seconds.” The total hours acquired by the volunteers was 179.5, along with 302 hours of training and 48 hours of truck checking (where crews go to the fire hall and check the trucks over). White said he would like to continue to give updates like this at the end of each month to give the council a better idea of the happenings at the fire department. About 30 riders parked their motorcycles outside the Loud American Road House on Sunday afternoon to be blessed. The "blessing of the bikes" event was sponsored by the Arkansas-based Christian Motorcyclists Association. Lay minister Danny Winter says the group has been around about 35 years and has more than 100,000 members worldwide. WHARF Continued from Page 0 mine site. He said that water treatment has stabilized conditions in general at Golden Reward, and cleanliness standards for surface water are being met. The Richmond Hill mine site is another where water treatment remains necessary long after mining ceased. Homestake has taken responsibility for its remaining reclamation. Sulfate levels rose, stabilized and decreased at most of the Richmond Hill water-monitoring locations, according to Homestake's Mark Tieszen. He said one well's sulfate level continued going up. Tieszen was asked by the state board's chairman, Dick Sweetman of Sioux Falls, whether he foresees a time when water treatment wouldn't be necessary. He said the water quality in Deadwood Creek below Homestake's historic Open Cut mine site is UexcellentV and the creek shows no ill effects from the mining or the reclamation work since the shutdown. No oral report was presented Thursday about Brohm's defunct mine, which was closed because of environmental problems. It is now a federal Superfund site under supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Water treatment continues there for acid drainage and other pollution. South Dakota's Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse now funnels KL0,000 a year to the outpatient treatment program in Spearfish and Rapid City that Hansen is involved with. She said that her budget exceeded that amount this year because the demand for treatment was so great. The Deadwood Gaming Commission is required by statute to pay K30,000 each year to a state grant that focuses on treatment and counseling for gambling addiction, said Gibb Suddbeck, director of the division of drug and alcohol abuse. To put that in perspective, the city of Deadwood received KS.1L million from taxes on gaming in U009. The State of South Dakota and South Dakota Tourism took in KU.6 million and K3.U million, respectively. Chemical Dependency Counselor <rad Paterson, of Piedmont, said that gambling addiction is very similar to an addiction to drugs or alcohol. “We've had S0 to Y0 years of alcohol addiction investigation. The neurology of the gambler, however, is still a new frontier,” he said. “We need to think about gambling as an addiction, because the same type of neurology is taking place that occurs when drinking or drug-using.” He compares some problem gamblers to meth-addicts. “When that person gets into a particular area, their ability to make logical decisions about their behavior goes out the window. We're talking about very ordinary people who choose to embezzle, write bad checks and steal from family and friends,” he said. Hansen said that gambling addicts usually fit into two categoriesZ “'Action-seekers' are the men, See BETTING — Page 34 BLACK HILLS PIONEER Page 8 Friday, May 21, 2010 Senior Menus Spearfish and Sturgis Senior Menu Tree House Caf, Hickory House 420 Oriole Dr., Spearfish Heritage Acres ?2 ?2240 East Ave., Sturgis !at$rday( *ay 22 , -a.on .heese 4$r5er( potato wed5es( ma.aroni salad( .a$li;lower salad( .arrot .a<e( pears !$nday( *ay 2= , -r$n.h ;eat$rin5 >oast 4ee; with the trimmin5s and hot 4rea<;ast men$ *onday( *ay 24 , @am dinner( 4a<ed sweet potatoes( miAed ve5eta4les( 4ro..oli salad( apple pie T$esday( *ay 2D , Pepper stea<( ve5eta4le 4rown ri.e( oven roasted sF$ash( sprin5 miA salad( s$5ar ;ree .heese .a<e( pears Gednesday( *ay 26 , Liver and onions( whipped potatoes( 5reen 4eans( ;resh 5arden medley( mandarin oran5es Th$rsday( *ay 27 , >oast t$r<ey( whipped potatoes( dressin5( parslied 4a4y .arrots( .ran4erry pears( p$mp<in 4ars Kriday( *ay 2L , !mor5as4ord Kriday( deli5ht yo$rsel; with an assortment o; entrees( dinner salad( ;resh ;r$its and dessert Evening menu 5-5G20 p.m. !at$rday , !.ram4led e55s( 4a.on( toast( hash 4rown potatoes( ;resh ;r$it !$nday , Kish ;ilet sandwi.h( ham and 4ean so$p( straw4erry short.a<e *onday , Nrilled >$e4en sandwi.h( ;resh 5arden medley( tropi.al ;r$it T$esday , !loppy Ooes( .elery sti.<s with pean$t 4$tter( i.e .ream p$;; Gednesday , Chi.<en .l$4 sandwi.h( sprin5 miA salad( white .a<e Th$rsday , Kren.h toast and sa$sa5e lin<s( s.ram4led e55s( ;resh ;r$it Kriday , Nrilled ham and .heese sandwi.h( ham and 4ean so$p( pista.hio p$ddin5 !alad bar available dail+ Monda+ throu2h 3rida+. 5ine in or carr+ out. !ervin2 seven da+s a wee9. Assuming diamonds are S-], which they usually will be, you can establish a ninth trick in that suit. However, the opponents might cash at least three spades and two diamonds. If diamonds will not work, though, you will have to get a fourth club trick. You might as well find out the spade break. So, duck the first two tricks and take the third spade after East discards a heart. Now it would be too optimistic to assume East has K-b-doubleton or K-b-J-tripleton of diamonds. Instead, hope West has the club jack and try to sneak a fourth club trick past him. Lead your club nine — not the 10, because West will surely cover that card if he has the jack. But he might fail to cover the nine. And if he does fail, you will have your ninth trick in the bag. Albers leaped 19 feet, 3.25 inches on this effort to set the state record in this event for the third time this season. Pioneer photo by Jason Gross SPEARFISH — What is a quarter of an inch? For Abby Albers it was a third state record in as many weeks. Albers took advantage of her last chance to eclipse her state girls' long Fump record and soared 19 feet, 3.25 inches at the Last Chance track meet, Thursday at Lyle Hare Stadium. It surpassed the 19-3 mark she set at the Greater Dakota Conference meet and was her third record-setting effort this season. “It felt really good,” Albers said of the Fump. “My big goal for the whole meet was to eclipse the state mark.” Albers added Thursday's effort would give her a lot of confidence going into next weekend's state 'AA' meet in Brandon and Sioux Falls. It was reported earlier this week that Albers soared 19-3.25 at the Greater Dakota Conference meet. Spearfish head coach Aaron Nida said Thursday that mark was unofficial, and the official measure was 19-3. The Spearfish girls' 800 relay placed first in 1[46.61. Spearfish's girls' medley relay broke the tape in 4[13.48. Spearfish's Jake _oung earned top honors in the boys' 110-meter hurdles. His time was 15.30 seconds. What it takes ... to be On the scene As part of the open house held Saturday, May 15 at the Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department, Butte County Emergency Respondors provided the public with a demonstration of a vehicle extracation, in order to present all of the necessary steps that go into an emergency call. Members of the Butte County/Belle Fourche Ambulance Service, the Belle Fourche Police Department and the Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department worked together to provide their services to a “victim” of a vehicle accident. Pictured are just some of the many steps necessary to provide an accident victim with the necessary care. The event started with an official “all call” and the response. Later, crews worked to stabalize the “victim” and remove her from the damaged vehicle. A demonstration of the equipment available to emergency service crews to actually cut into the vehicle was later shown. More than 75 members of the public attended the event, which was dubbed a success.
