Your support of our mission to change children’s lives for the better, forever is invaluable as you joined with us last year to Start Something for children facing adversity. With your help, we enhanced our work and hold ourselves accountable to these important outcomes for children— • Higher Aspirations, Greater Confidence and Better Relationships. You hear in the news about the struggles youth face with bullying and broken relationships. It’s vital we work to prevent this by developing their social connections—strong relationships with peers and adults. In close partnership with school leaders we learned that engaging youth in extracurricular activities is the most valuable way to build relationships and trust. We’ll help families overcome obstacles, participate in activities and even provide scholarship funding. • Avoidance of Risky Behaviors. Our agency was honored last year for long lasting, strong mentoring relationships that surpass the national average match length. That honor came with funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and our commitment to help more children avoid risky behaviors. • Educational Achievement. New initiatives include timely school progress report discussions with parents, mentors, staff and youth. We’ll team up together around each child, with educational goals and incentive plans that motivate youth. Each time you donate money or time to Big Brothers Big Sisters, you are helping a child reach their potential. You Start Something. What if every child fulfills his or her potential? What if every child is set on the right path today? What if every child graduates high school and college and gives back to the community? It will be the start of something big! Thank you for your continued support of youth mentoring. Sincerely, Linda Henecke President and CEO 3 Real Life Impact Sally Hlubek has been a Big Sister since 2001. She shares in her words about how being a Big has impacted the life of a child and changed her life for the better as well. Ten years ago I was a busy stay-at-home mom with a wonderful husband and three little children. Besides raising my family, I wanted to do something positive in the community that could involve my entire family. Big Brothers Big Sisters was the perfect answer. As soon as I met Kaitlin, I knew she would fit right in at our house. She was full of energy and very outgoing, and we had many of the same interests. Just a little background on Kaitlin: she is the only child in a single parent household. She is very close to her mom, Barb, but does not have any contact with her dad. They have struggled financially over the years, even losing their house in the flood. Kaitlin told me she wanted to be a Little because she was “bored and wanted to do more active things”. Soon after we were matched, doctors found a benign tumor on Kaitlin’s brain. She has a genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis which predisposes her to having benign tumors within her body. So, within the first year of our match she also had her first brain surgery to remove the tumor. She came through that surgery like a pro and continued to be the vivacious little girl Sally Hlubek & Kaitlin, 2008 she always was. As soon as we could, we started getting together again at least once a week for supper and some fun. Over the years, our families have endured many health issues that have brought us closer together. My husband has had three heart surgeries, one during which he had a massive stroke that left him with a disability. I was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, and Kaitlin had to undergo another brain surgery last summer that had several complications she continues to overcome. Throughout all of this we were a constant in each other’s lives, meeting 1-2 times a month, and doing something fun to take our minds off of our problems. The day before her surgery last summer, Kaitlin decided to shave her head. My hair had still not grown in much from the chemo so we were able to get a great picture of both of us with our beautiful bald heads. We even made up funny superhero nicknames for each other. My husband is Strokeman, I’m Chemobroob (don’t ask!), and Kaitlin is Tuberous Sclerosis Girl. It had been a long time since any of us had laughed as hard as we did that night. After all “Tuberous Sclerosis Girl” had been through since last summer it was fantastic to be at Jefferson High School’s graduation this past May and watch Kaitlin walk across the stage to receive her diploma. Because of the complications with her brain surgeries, school, and soon college, will be a lot more difficult than for the average person. Recently, I went with Kaitlin to talk with an admissions counselor at Kirkwood to explore different options in consideration of her special circumstances. The meeting was very encouraging, so Kaitlin and I were excited to get back to my house and apply for admission and some scholarships on the Kirkwood website. She had already been a proud recipient of a BBBS $500 scholarship that she plans to utilize this fall as she starts this next big phase of her life. College! It is wonderful to know that our friendship has lasted for 10 years. Early on in our match I remember Kaitlin asking if I thought we’d be friends forever, if I’d come to her wedding and be around to see her kids. I told her that was definitely my plan! To this day we talk about how long our friendship has lasted and that we plan to eventually be the BBBS “longest match ever”. Many things in our lives have changed over the past 10 years, but our friendship is one constant. It has been amazing to watch Kaitlin grow into a strong woman who has done a remarkable job overcoming more adversity than most people could even imagine. Knowing that my family and I have had a positive influence on this wonderful person is an extraordinary feeling. 4 ...we plan to be the BBBS “longest match ever”. Program Highlights Over 9,000 children in our community could benefit from positive mentoring. We set aggressive goals in 2011 to serve 754 children in a safe and Big Brothers Big Sisters values long-term, quality mentoring relationships and knows that a child’s life is positively impacted by having a caring mentor. Our agency is proud to be a leading Big Brothers Big Sisters national affiliate in match length and retention. In line with our mission, we have determined that a top priority is to make a measureable impact on our community. A positive mentoring relationship can have a tremendous impact on the life of a child. It’s amazing how encouraging, supporting, and listening to a child can truly help them achieve success in multiple aspects of their life. Big Brothers Big Sisters matched Mary with Ann Oleson in 2001. During their time together, Mary became very comfortable with Ann and felt she could tell her anything. Over the years, Mary began to feel like a part of Ann’s family. “They did things that they didn’t have to that made me feel important and would make my family’s life easier,” stated Mary. Mary began working at an early age and she struggled to stay caught up with schoolwork. Her mom and Ann encouraged her to reach her potential, and Mary learned that if you work hard enough and try hard enough, you will succeed. Ann helped Mary discover what she might like to do with her life and helped her apply for college and scholarships. Mary will start at Kirkwood Community College in August, the same month she and Ann will celebrate their 10 year anniversary as a match. Mary shared that, “I will always keep in touch with Ann like she is family because, if you ask me, she is.” 6 Ann Oleson & Mary, 2009 Your Gifts Keep Us Going Today! Ann Alliger & Marissa 5 years This year, we celebrate 15 match relationships as they end their formal participation in our program and embark on the next part of their journey! We are confident that the experiences and conversations they have shared over the years will help to guide them now and into the future. History tells us many of these friendships will endure, like Bob and Jerry who still get together 30 years after they were first matched in 1983! The positive impact of youth mentoring is a lasting benefit to those involved and to the whole community. Michael Alt & Darious 8 years Sally Hlubek & Kaitlin 10 years Ann Oleson & Mary 10 years Little Sister Brittley Continues to College It is a strong and caring parent who determines that including another adult in the life of their child may be the best thing to help them grow and expose them to new opportunities. In 2000, that’s exactly what Brenda did. She contacted Big Brothers Big Sisters for her daughter, Brittley. Brenda asked that Brittley be matched with a positive role model who could help her overcome some of the challenges of growing up and develop her personal assets. Brittley was matched with Lois and they’ve been sharing time together for over 10 years! Lois helped Brittley learn to handle peer pressures and make goals for improving her grades. “Every time we get together we talk about school: my grades, classes I’m taking and projects I’m working on in class. I know Lois cares how I’m doing so I work hard to get good grades,” stated Brittley. Lois Ralston & Brittley enjoy making crafts Brittley recently graduated from high school and plans to attend Kirkwood Community College. Her Match Support Specialist shared that, “Brittley is a planner who knows what she wants. Education is very important to her and Lois played a large part in developing Brittley’s dedication to academics. Brittley plans to double major in early childhood education and psychology.” 8 Sherri Becker & Katherine 5 years Carolyn Perkins & Alana 10 years Trisha Putman & Cassandra 7 years Lois Ralston & Brittley 11 years Jack Roth & Garin 10 years Rick & Gayle Ryan & Rachael 10 years Jessica Snyder & Kendra 5 years Dan Spangler & Andrew 7 years Pam Sullivan & Haley 9 years Darcy Taylor & Corie 8 years Abby Tresnak & BreAnna 9 years Youth Scholarships Thanks to all donors of the Art Christoffersen Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund.
