to their Legion and/or Auxiliary Birthday

you and personally thanking the veterans
for their service has been delightful! I am
especially pleased to see members attend
these celebrations wearing 100% ribbons
as part of their party attire!
How Volunteers Save Money for Taxpayers: At a recent luncheon to thank our
VA Hospital Volunteers for their many
hours of service, Commander Rohan also
thanked them for personally saving her
money. She went on to explain that if we
had to pay employees for these hours of
service at the VA Hospitals, our budget requests would be much larger. On our hospital tours, we witnessed the sparkles in the
eyes of our veterans when the volunteers
spoke with them. They do indeed bring joy
to the lives of these patients and residents!
Peas in the Pod or Programs in the
Pod?: Our programs demonstrate how we
honor our veterans. We in the Auxiliary
need to stop worrying if we are reporting
our work in the right pod or program. It is
our concern to continue doing the work we
do, look at ideas presented by chairmen on
every level, and then decide if it is a fit for
our unit. If it is, and you have excitement
about trying it, go ahead! You tell us what
you do, and we’ll decide how to get this
information to Congress so they know that
we are following our mission and honoring our veterans. Never be afraid to call
with questions or concerns.
Wanted – 1,800 Overdue Books: As
you know, every member in the Auxiliary
is an important book in my own personal
Library of Love. We are looking for our
“overdue books.” We need to have them
available for use in our evidence for the
Library of Congress documents. If you are
one of the members who have not yet paid
your 2012 dues, please get renewed as soon
as possible. We really need you! Our veterans, our troops, and our youth need you!

It is truly inspiring to hear stories from
our Units of the things they do for our
Veterans, our active military, and their
families. A countless number of hours
are spent clipping coupons, putting together packages to be sent to our military personnel, donating time to create
Camo Quilts, and the dollars and time
donated to help our Homeless Women
Veterans. They spent many hours inspiring and supporting our youth through
the Americanism Essay Contest, Badger
Girls State, Poppy Princesses, Hero Back
Packs, serving meals at soup kitchens and
Veterans facilities, and awarding Education Scholarships.

Remember the reason we joined in the
first place is because of those brave veterans in our family who stepped forward
and served our country. We must continue
to honor them with our membership.
American Legion Auxiliary membership lets Congress know that we are here
to protect the rights and quality of life
for our veterans and their families. Our
donated volunteer hours and dollars are
reported annually to Congress.

Hello everyone!!! May is a month
for remembering and honoring.
On May 5, 1868 General John Logan officially proclaimed Memorial
Day, originally known as Decoration Day. It is a day of remembrance
for those who died in our nation’s
service. Due to the service of these
great men and women we are free.
We have freedom of speech, the
right to choose and practice our religion without fear, the right to vote,
and the right to keep and bear arms.
These are just a few of our freedoms. Always remember, we have
these rights and freedom due to their
ultimate sacrifice.
The other great celebration in May
is “Mother’s Day.” None of us would
be here without our mothers. Call
her, write her, send flowers, make
her favorite meal, visit her and give
her your time and attention. Most of
all, tell her that you love her.

The month of June offers us two occasions on which we can demonstrate our
national pride by flying our flag and remembering those who sacrificed so much
for our freedoms. This year, we commemorate the 68th anniversary of the D-Day
Invasion of Normandy on June 6th, 1944.
Beginning with the airborne assault in predawn darkness, 24,500 paratroopers were
dropped behind German lines. At 6:30 am,
the landing of 160,000 allied troops began
and American forces fought hard to gain a
foothold in two separate areas, code named
“Omaha” and “Utah” beaches. Omaha
Beach was the most heavily fortified of the
five landing areas and by mid-morning, initial reports painted such a bleak portrait of
beachhead conditions that Lt. Gen. Omar
Bradley, United States First Army Commander, considered pulling off the beach
and landing troops elsewhere along the
coast. However, during those dark hours,
bravery and initiative came to the fore. By
day’s end V Corps had a tenuous toehold on
the Normandy coast, and the force consoli-
dated to protect its gains and prepare for the
next step on the road to Germany.
The 4th Infantry Division was assigned
to take Utah Beach. In contrast with Omaha Beach, the 4th Division’s landing went
smoothly. The first wave landed 2,000
yards south of the planned beach--one of
the Allies’ more fortuitous opportunities
on D-Day. The original beach was heavily
defended in comparison to the light resistance and few fixed defenses encountered
on the new beach. Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr., who accompanied the
first wave, decided to exploit the opportunity and altered the original plan. He ordered a landing craft carrying the successive assault waves to land reinforcements,
equipment and supplies to capitalize on
the first wave’s success. Within hours, the
beachhead was secured and the 4th Division started inland to contact the airborne
divisions scattered across its front. As in
the Omaha zone, at day’s end Utah Beach
forces had not gained all of their planned
objectives. However, a lodgment was secured and, most importantly, once again
the American soldiers’ resourcefulness and
initiative had rescued the operation from
floundering along the Normandy coast.
With these successes came a very high
price, in human lives. By day’s end 9,000
Allied troops were wounded or dead.
We can take great pride this month in recognizing Ozaukee as the birthplace of Flag
Day. This day is set aside to commemorate
the Continental Congress’ approval of the
design for a national flag. What began in
1885 as a schoolteacher’s assignment for
his students on our flag and its significance
has grown into a national day of recognition. Although there is no official assignment of meaning or symbolism to the
colors of the flag, Charles Thomson, secretary of the Continental Congress, in describing the Great Seal, related its colors to
those of the flag. According to Thomson,
“White signifies purity and innocence,
Red, hardiness and valor, and Blue …
vigilance, perseverance and justice.”
So the Red and White stripes of 13 represent the link to the original ground of 13
states on which the nation has been built.
And the stars, representing the union of
now 50 states, have been laid on the blue
canton to bind all of them with the bond of
vigilance, perseverance and justice. She’s
America’s “Old Glory”. Long may she
wave, dear God, long may she wave.

Department Convention
The 92nd Annual Department Convention
will be called into session at the Madison
Marriott West Hotel. Convention General
Session will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 20, 2012 in the Superior Room.
Purpose
The Convention is called for the purpose
of electing officers for the ensuing year,
electing delegates to the National Con-
vention, amending the Constitution, receiving reports of the Department Officers/
Chairmen, Unit recognition of outstanding
achievements and for the transaction of
such business as may be brought before it.
Representation
Representation in the Department Convention shall be by Unit, in accordance
with the provisions of the Department
Constitution. Delegates to Department
Convention shall be Unit members duly
elected for that purpose. Each Unit shall
be entitled to two delegates and two
alternates for the Unit itself and an additional delegate and alternate for each
fifty members or major fraction thereof,
whose District, State and National dues
have been paid at least thirty days prior
to the date of Department Convention.
Units with less than ten members shall
have no representation.

Diana Blom was installed as
Department President at the annual convention held in down-
town Madison in 1997. Members were encouraged to “Follow
the WAVE” during the year and
serve as Women Aiding Veterans
Everywhere. She selected Loretta Shellman, then a Department
Vice President, as her Membership Chairman. Janiece Fischer
Diana Blom
served as Senior Vice President
during that year.
Diana is a 51-year member
of Shiocton Unit 512 in 9th
District and served as Unit and
District President before becoming a Department Officer.
She is eligible for membership through the service of her
husband William. Her special
project was to provide Spinoza
Bears to as many hospitalized
and ill children as possible.
She set a goal of 136 bears, a
number that was met and then
surpassed by Units throughout
the Department. Her year culminated in Green Bay where
she presided over the 1998 Department Convention.

of our wounded warriors, and the
ongoing war.
