Participants brochure JEC Europe 2014 Visit the Holland Lounge: Level 7.3 Booth G10 -1- -2- www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech Sustainability is the talk of the town. New initiatives in environmental management, energy savings, water management and climate control are embraced with open arms, and the use and reuse of renewable resources encouraged. Advanced technologies play an important role in these enhancements. The Netherlands has a lot of know-how when it comes to innovations in areas such as ‘smart materials’ and ‘smart textiles’. The demand for lighter structures is continuously increasing and composites are the perfect answer. This relatively new material has been used for years in aerospace and space technologies since weight, strength and freedom of shape are key factors in aerospace and aviation. But nothing ever stands still and composites are now used more and more in the automotive and transport industries as well as in other sectors. These materials are generally fibrereinforced plastics. Composites are perfect for supplementing conventional materials in the metal and construction industries. The transposition potential of these materials is virtually limitless. The Netherlands is a leader in the mouldable and recyclable thermoplastic composites and thermoset polymers that are used in the aviation and aeronautic industries. The need for lightweight and super strong – meaning durable and economically responsible – high-quality thermoplastic material is also growing quickly in the automotive sector and in the oil and gas industry. The advantage of thermoplastics is their fast processing time – among other things because of their malleability at high temperatures and pressure – which enables industries to use them in high volumes in industrial production processes. This reduces production costs considerably. With rising oil prices and the restrictions on CO2 emissions, the automotive and aviation industries have an increasing need to use such advanced materials in their new generations of aircraft and vehicles. The Netherlands has almost 100 years of experience building airplanes, which is why it conducted a number of research projects on the use of lightweight materials in the aviation industry. Fokker, TNO, NLR, DSM, Royal ten Cate, Damen, TU Delft and Airborne are well-known Dutch companies and organizations. In the Dutch material region of Twente, a close collaboration is taking place between knowledge centres and manufacturing companies in the areas of composites -3- and inkjet technology, and innovative materials and finishing processes. Examples are the Open Innovation Centre Advanced Materials (OICAM) in Nijverdal and the Thermoplastic Composites Research Centre (TPRC) in Enschede. This partnership will make composite materials and technologies available for new products and markets, for example, in windmills and cars. CompoWorld stimulates and facilitates a climate favourable for high-quality composites (thermosets, thermoplastics made of dry fibres) in which innovations in the field of high-quality composites can mature from primary research to production through industrially applied research and development programmes with which businesses can convert the knowledge and expertise they accumulate into commercial projects. Dutch companies and knowledge institutes in the high-tech systems and materials (HTSM) sector are renowned for their technological excellence and are leaders in their market segments. The whole chain (infrastructure) has been put in place for smart materials and public-private partnership is stimulated with schools and knowledge institutes in an endeavour to provide the highest level of education. Automation, alongside transition, is one of the main areas of focus. The Netherlands’ centuries-old tradition of creativity, pragmatism, entrepreneurship, openness and collaboration is the perfect breeding ground for the HTSM sector. These qualities make the Netherlands the perfect place to find solutions to the challenges society is facing today in the areas of health and wellness, security, renewable energy, mobility and the climate (water, environment, climate change mitigation and climate adaptation). The Dutch high-tech systems and materials sector offers pragmatic solutions for technological challenges. Solutions that, due to the complexity of the challenges, are primarily found by cross-overs in technology and collaboration. The Netherlands is recognized around the world for its products, knowledge and concepts. Its high-tech systems and materials sector has high-end job opportunities for foreign knowledge workers (golden heads), skilled workers/ know how (golden hands) and educators. It also offers a centre of excellence for research and development in the area of technology and innovation, and promotes collaboration and technology partnerships. The Netherlands offers excellent business conditions for domestic and foreign technology companies alike, and is an attractive place to live and work for entrepreneurs, researchers and students. -4- www.hollandhightech.nl @hollandhightech Companylocated 1D Composites BV Airborne Composites BV AkzoNobel Autonational Composites BV AXXOR B.V. European Knowledge Center of Composites Advanced NDI defect detection and repair for primary composite structures Today’s introduction of composite materials in primary structures raises the problem of NDI techniques to identify defects and the problem of the lack of applicable repair techniques. Working together with industrial and academic partners, EKCC’s research will bring to the market solutions responding to these unanswered concerns. As these issues must be solved now, the approach is to upgrade techniques that are commonly used in NDI but must be adapted for certified examination of composites. Using modern mechatronics, a robotic application is under development for use in a one-pass overall inspection run, reducing out-of-operation time of the inspected structures. In parallel, research is progressing on new repair techniques that can then be confirmed as reliable by the developed NDI technology, thus closing both gaps now confronting the composites industry.
