for current and future Talk talents is longtime industry veteran Don
Anthony. Head drill sergeant at his own annual Morning Show Boot
Camp, and publisher of the monthly Morning Mouth magazine and
e-publication Jockline Daily, Don first established the Talk Show
Boot Camp in his hometown of Atlanta back in 2009, joining forces
with NTS MediaOnline to create TMC/TSBC, a marriage of both
conferences held for the first time last year in Los Angeles. Fresh off
his latest MSBC event in Miami, we caught up with the TalentMasters
head honcho to get his take on just why he’s so convinced that TMC/
TSBC 2011 is a “must attend” event for both veteran and rookie Talk
talents.
Since so many morning shows across the country are essentially
“talk” shows on music stations, what sort of vibe were you getting
from attendees at this year’s Morning Show Boot Camp?
They know the talent pool is getting smaller, not larger, and only the
best will survive. They look at hosts like Ryan Seacrest, Elvis Duran,

Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and others, and what
they see are people who have taken control of their destiny. For many
on the FM music side who are required to play a certain number of
songs, or who don’t have full control over their websites, branding etc.,
they’re concerned with how that plays into their future. They’re team
players, but they want to be more in control of their total act. As for
those who don’t play music, they’re tired of not being considered Talk
personalities. It’s like, if they’re not talking politics, they’re not actually
talking. That perception really needs to change. In a matter of years,
most of radio will likely be one form of Talk or another, so then what?
With the writing on the wall, a lot of music-based personality shows are
preparing themselves for life on the radio without music.
Obviously a glutton for punishment after just completing MSBC,
you’re about to wade in to preparing for our joint event next October.
Tell us what you think the marriage of our two conferences has
produced.
For Talk talent, programmers or aspiring talkers, there has to be forums
where they can learn how to improve their craft, maximize their social
media skills, learn the ins-and-outs of syndication, network with other
personalities and programmers, and how to cross over into Talk. For our
supporting advertisers, the ‘two events under one roof’ concept gives
them not only the ability to market their products and services, but also
offers more potential customers to talk with. So for everyone involved,
there’s a return on investment.
What are some of the talent-focused topics you hope to address and
conversations you hope to stimulate at TMC/TSBC?

Thirteen year NFL veteran Eric Davis joins KBWF/San Francisco as
the 2-6pm weekday host on the Entercom FM Sports/Talker. Meanwhile,
former KXTG/Portland host John Lund also joins KBWF, where
he’ll assume middays on the new Bay Area Sports outlet … Congrats to
Emmis Communications head honcho Jeff Smulyan on being honored
by the Indiana Broadcasters Association with the group’s Lifetime
Achievement Award. The Hoosier State broadcaster will receive the
trophy at ceremonies scheduled for October 6th … A tip of the old ‘touk’
to Toronto’s “680 News” VP/GM and Rogers Broadcasting VP of Radio
News Programming, John Hinnen, as the RTDNA/Canada awards him
this year’s prestigious President’s Award … Local Mile High City media
power couple Chuck Bonniwell and Julie Hayden are named as hosts

their show(s) or attracting new listeners. You can bet all eyes and ears
will once again be glued to new ways to succeed best in the Arbitron
PPM environment. And, as I already noted, everyone who is on the
air needs strategies for continued improvement in social media, storytelling and interview skills, how to take a show national, or how to
make the switch to Talk. Those are some of the topics I look forward
to addressing. Talents also benefit from talking directly with specialists
who can provide inside tips on improving their overall shows and offer
solid career guidance. That’s the kind of people and programs they’ll be
surrounded with at TMC/TSBC 2011.
What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen for on-air
performers, and what are some the challenges you think they’ll face
in the future?
There’s no longer any room for mediocrity. PPM has taken the guesswork
out of distinguishing between great and not-so-great shows. Companies
today are looking for franchise players and shows they can build on,
nationally or regionally. The ones that get the nod stand out from the rest
and are paid accordingly. This brings up one of the biggest challenges
today -- the economy. Local talent have to continually prove their worth
and have less time than ever today to prove it. Plus, there’s virtually no
promotion budgets, so talent are forced to resort to social media and blogs
to promote their shows. Another challenge is simple direction. With PD’s
servicing more and more stations in a cluster, it’s often difficult to spend
as much time working with local shows than it was in the past. A lot
of shows now pay for their own consultants. This is one of the reasons
we always recruit as many talent consultants as possible for our events.
Connecting them with our attendees proved to be invaluable for many
who attended last year’s conference.
Why are you “bullish” on the future for talent in spoken-word radio?
Great shows have always been the backbone of our industry. From
Lujack to Limbaugh, Stern to Hannity, great talent has always driven
our success. As for spoken-word, it’s where the majority of radio will
be in the coming years and the more prepared talent are today, the more
successful they’ll be tomorrow.
Finally, give us your three most compelling reasons why talents
should attend TMC/TSBC, even if it has to be on their own dime.
Get Discovered: Sadly, Talk radio’s talent pool is a bit shallow. Just
ask anyone who has conducted a talent search recently. If I were a talent
seeking a future in Talk, or an existing talent who wants to connect with
some of the most powerful people in Talk, I’d do whatever possible to
be part of this event … Be Inspired: It’s a tough time to be in radio, but
the one thing we saw at last year’s event was people being re-energized.
The same thing happens at our MSBC. Talent thrive being around other
talent. PD’s thrive on connecting with other programmers as well.
Together it all produces a great synergy -- very inspirational and very
motivating … Connect With The Future: Spoken-word is the future of
radio. At TMC/TSBC, you’ll get a double-barrel of executives to connect
with, plus some top consultants, coaches and others to learn from. I truly
believe events such as this can change people’s lives. I’ve seen it happen
for 23 years. With the two events under one roof, there’s no telling what
could happen.
