The monthly newsletter of First Baptist Church Godley
October 2015
from the
I
Pastor’s Pen
wrote in last month’s column thoughts about what it means to live a holy life before God. Hebrews tells
us that “Without holiness no one will see God.” In this month’s column I want to explore two facets
of living holy before God. What does it mean to really be changed at the moment of our salvation (a
change of kingdoms)? How do we conduct the battle for our holiness in the daily life struggle?
A Change of Kingdoms!
Many Christians have a basic desire to live a holy life, but have come to believe that they simply
cannot do it. To begin with, we need to realize that God has indeed made provision for us to live a holy
life, and He has also given us responsibilities as well. Romans 6:12 tells us, “Therefore, do not let sin reign
in your mortal body, so that you obey its evil desires”. It is clearly our responsibility to establish as part of
our will to not let sin have control in our lives. If you have been in our morning worship this last month
you realize that Romans 6-7 helps us understand the “why” of resisting sin. In this preceding passage, Paul
establishes the fact that since we have died to the sinful nature (through Christ), we are no longer a slave of
it. Therefore we have the responsibility and the ability to keep sin from reigning in our lives. If we view sin as
a realm or sphere or world then we, as believers, no longer live there. When we die here on earth, we are no
longer subject to its laws, rules or influences. We are dead! We don’t have to pay taxes, we cannot be arrested,
there are no laws we must obey, we do not experience sickness or pain, hunger or thirst. We are beyond the
influence of this world. The Battle for Holiness!
We may not like the fact that we have this lifelong struggle with sin, but the more we realize and
accept it, the better equipped we will be to deal with it. Although sin has been overthrown and weakened, its
nature has not changed. So, if we are to wage a successful war against this enemy within, it is important that
we know something of its nature and tactics. First of all, the scriptures tells us that the seat of indwelling sin
is the heart (Mark 7:21-23). The Bible paints a picture of the heart as the whole soul of a person and all of its
faculties, as they work together in doing good or evil:
• The mind – as it reasons, discerns and judges,
• The emotions – as they like or dislike,
• The conscience – as it determines and warns,
• The will – as it chooses or refuses.
Secondly, the indwelling sin nature works primarily through our desires. Desire is the strongest
force in a person’s heart. Take a look at temptation. When we give in to temptation, it is because our desire
has overcome our reason in the battle to influence our will. Thirdly, indwelling sin tends to deceive and
distort our understanding or reasoning. If the power of sin has been overcome, Satan and our flesh has to
resort to deceiving our very understanding of sin. We may come to believe that we are beyond a particular
temptation or sin.
I want to leave you with two thoughts that can help in our time of need. First, we must have a
humble and consistent intake of Scripture. Feed our minds with His Word of Truth! Second, we must pray
earnestly and continually for holiness in our lives. These two helps will keep us on
the road to a consistent holy life. I love being your Pastor!
A Note of Thanks...
First Baptist Church,
Thank you so much for all your love, prayers, and
support as we both mourned and celebrated the life
of our Papa and Dad. We appreciate the plant from
our church family and the use of the building for
Dad’s services.

Dr. Joe
My Dear Church Family,
You all have blessed my soul with your many ways of
showing your love to me. Prayers, cards, food, and
other ways of showing your concern for me.
I want to also thank so very much the group that
learned one of my daily tasks in the office and
committed to work for me these last few weeks. That is
going above and beyond to give me that much time out
of their lives. I also want to thank the staff for filling
in for me by meeting and greeting those who come in
everyday and answering the phone. I thank you all for
making my long time of surgery and recovery much
more bearable.
God Bless each of you and our church.
Love you all, Kathy

How to be a help to your church
H
elp shoulder the load of responsibility — Pastors and leaders of the church often feel
much like Moses did when Israel fought with Amelek. Their arms become weary under
the weight of so many responsibilities and they need brothers and sisters to stand beside
them and help distribute the load. “But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone
and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and
the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun” (Ex. 17:12).
The Lord never intended for the whole ministry of the church to be carried solely by the pastor or a
mere handful of people. It’s said that 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people, and sadly, this has
caused the “burnout” of its many outstanding workers. If everyone would simply pitch in and do their
fair share in helping, serving, and giving, all the needs would be met and no one would be overburdened. Be willing to volunteer with whatever needs done and don’t be finicky about what you will or
will not do. Do as the scripture says, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might...” (Ecl.
9:10). And don’t help out just for strokes of attention, but do it for God’s glory. 

Music Ministries
The choir is working on “The Word Became Flesh” which is an immensely powerful
Christmas work to be presented on Sunday December 13th. We need about 10 additional
singers who are willing to pick up a CD, learn the music and attend rehearsals. Only about 10
more rehearsals remain until the presentation. There is still time to learn the music. Don’t let
this opportunity pass you by! 
See Billy Woods for more information.
