Mr. Tominaga
Dear Lehua Ohana,
Welcome Back! I hope you had numerous opportunities to SHARPEN THE SAW with your families during Spring Break. This
month, all students in grades 3rd-6th will participate in the statewide test (Smarter Balance Assessment). The test assesses for knowledge in
Language Arts, Math, and Science. I just want to let all of you know that no matter what the results are, I am proud of our staff, teachers, and
most importantly, our students for BEGINNING WITH THE END IN MIND and are PROACTIVE in preparing for this rigorous test. I am
confident that our students will fare well.
This month, we will be celebrating, Month of the Military Child. On Friday, April 15 th, will be “Purple Up” day. All staff, parents
and the Lehua student body, (both military and non-military) are encouraged to wear purple to show support for all our military students.
Please do not forget that if a child does not wear purple on this day, the uniform policy is still in effect and the Lehua uniform shirt must be
worn. I truly appreciate all the sacrifices our military students go through and give them a huge Lehua Leopard ROOOOAAAARRRR for
being awesome members of our Lehua family. We will also have a Military Child Appreciation Assembly on Friday, April 29th at 1:15pm in
our cafeteria, to honor all of our military children. I hope you are able to make it.
March 9th our school was well represented in the annual Math Olympiad held at Highland Intermediate School. Our
knowledgeable Leopard brains were hard at work. A shout out to our wonderful coaches, Mr. Taira, Ms. Yoshikawa and Ms. Tibayan for all
their hard work with the students!
March 12th saw our 5th and 6th grade Volleyball team compete in their first Volleyball Tournament at Pearl City High School. This
completion included 5th and 6th grade students from the Pearl City Complex. Our team did a phenomenal job and represented Lehua
Elementary School with Leopard pride and great sportsmanship. Mahalo to the coaches, Mrs. Black, Mrs. Trujillo and Ms. Simmons!
Please remember to keep your child’s meal account balance above $15.00. If your child’s balance falls below $15.00 a friendly
reminder is sent home via a letter (usually in the Wednesday newsmobile) to deposit money into your child’s account. If funds are not
deposited in a timely manner, you will also receive an automated telephone call each evening. Should your child’s lunch account become
negative, you MUST provide a home lunch as your child will not be served a school lunch. Every effort is made to remind parents of their
child’s balance. Please make sure you keep the office aware of any telephone/contact information changes. The $15.00 amount is to ensure
that your child has enough funds to purchase meals and it gives parents/guardians ample time to deposit funds.
Finally, with the end of the 2015/2016 school year being right around the corner, I hope to close the year with a blast. I believe
now is the time to put the pedal to the metal to charge ahead and finish strong. Thank you for your continued support in making Lehua
Elementary the best it can be.

Lehua Elementary School office needs at least 2
weeks’ notice to process any releases for your
student(s) (this does not apply to our 6th graders
heading to Highlands Intermediate).

assembly is set for Friday,

cafeteria.
The Student Support Committee program is looking for
parent/military volunteers for the “Mystery Event” to
be held Friday, April 15th. If you are interested, please

Kindergarten Registration for School Year 2016/2017
Registration has begun for next school years Kindergarten class. Children born August 1, 2010 to July 31, 2011 are eligible. Please
bring the following documents: Birth Certificate, Health Form 14 (up to date), Proof of Residence (ie: utility bill, lease agreement,
etc…) and Legal Documents (if applicable). Parents will need to provide the documentation for the following health requirements
by the start of school:

A tuberculin test (TB test) within one year of school entry date. Proof of student being free from tuberculosis is
required for school attendance.

A physical examination within one year of school entry date.

The complete series of required immunizations (including hepatitis and varicella).
Registration hours are Monday – Friday 8:30am – 11:00am & 1:30pm – 3:00pm

The Best Day Ever

The Best Week Ever
Have you ever had a sibling that’s as cute as can be?
Well I just got a sister,
I think she’s half Japanese.
Her name is Peighton,
She is very flimsy.
I call her a little monkey because her arms are so long.
To put her to sleep we sing a song,
She falls asleep right after she yawns,
She shuts her eyes as we end the lullabies.
I say goodnight Peighton see you tomorrow when you rise.
When we went to California for vacation
during the summer with my family.
Everything was so much fun I was so happy!
When we got off the plane we found a hotel
and then went to the pool.
Everything was so cool!
We went to the movies and to the mall.
It wasn’t like anything I’ve seen at all.
We walked to the food court when we got hungry.
The food there was so yummy!
To make this trip the best trip of all.
I got to spend all of it with my family.
My Best Day Ever!
My Dream of An Artist
I practiced for a part,
and when I performed,
I did a good start,
The judge smiled,
wrote in his book,
and gave me a good look!
I walked out,
with my head held high,
my mom trying not to cry,
I got the part,
Because I did a good start!
That was my best day.

I will tell you how this came to be,
why I want to be an artist.
I wanted to just paint anything,
Like a giraffe or a bird with a colorful wing.
Maybe a dog running free
Or maybe a sad cat who can’t see.
I could make a fish who loves the land,
Or a seagull who hated water and sand.
There is a lot of things that I wanted to draw,
so I drew and drew, and guess what I saw!
I made a beautiful picture, you see,
that is when my goal was complete!
Medusa and the Visitor
Ooh yes do come in,
Climbing up those mountains your feet must be aching,
Here have some soup, today’s special,
I call it the Red Devil.
Why are there eyes in the soup you say?
They are gummies, I have some left over from my birthday.
Why have sunglasses in a dark cave you say?
Well I think it’s a pretty cool mask.
You ask why snakes for hair?
My doctor says it’s great for my health care.
Why statues in my corner?
They are from my Halloween horror!
Why ask so many questions?
I have no secrets, here’s my confession.

My D.A.R.E Report
-Calie I.
As long as I remember my D.A.R.E class, I know that I will make good choices. My D.A.R.E report will contain the things I’ve learned in
DARE, how I have used the DDMM, and my plan to make safe and responsible choices. In DARE I have learned different ways to report
bullying. Such as, I didn’t know that I could just write a note and give it to someone. I thought you had to verbally tell them. I also
learned different ways to get out of an uncomfortable or unsafe situation. Such as if someone asks if you want a cigarette or drugs,
then you can just walk away. If you are not able to walk away, then you could say no and bring up another topic or give a reason why.
One more thing that I learned in D.A.R.E is how to communicate effectively. You should also communicate confidently. You should not
scream, yell (be demanding). You should also not look unsure, mumble, slouch, or look at the floor. To communicate effectively, you
should make eye contact, have good posture, speak clearly, and make sure the person is listening.
In the past I have used the DDMM many times. Such as, when I was in D.A.R.E. My friend would talk to me a lot and sometimes I didn’t
know what to do. I could either respond back to her, or listen to the speaker. When I responded, usually I would get a bad
consequence, but I learned not to and just pay attention to the speaker. I know I made the right decision because I was asking good
questions, learning more, and eventually I won D.A.R.E student of the week!
In my future, I will make safe and responsible choice. I will do that by looking over my situation, thinking about my choices, make a
choice, and think about if I made the responsible decision. This will be especially important when I am older because nobody will be
around to remind me and there are bigger decisions in life that if you should talk to your friends.
D.A.R.E has helped me correct my choices in all different ways, it is something that I will never forget as long as I live.
Should Animals be Used for Research?

Why do people slave animals to be used as test dummies? Why
don’t we help animals who are being used for testing and will die
from testing? For instance, by testing on the animals their mind and
body will be corrupted from suicidal tests because of scientists
hurting and killing animals out of their OWN FREE WILL! Man’s best
friend is being held not in an environment they should be in, but
rather locked up in kennels without love and care. In fact, animals
taken away from their natural environment will cause food chains,
food webs, food pyramids, and ecosystems to fall and collapse at the
feet of scientist. This is unfair, unacceptable, this is not a win-win
situation, rather this is a lose-lose.

Greetings parents of Lehua Elementary!
We are excited to share with you that the month of April has been designated the “Month of the Military
Child” by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC). We appreciate our military service members immensely
but we also want to take the time to recognize the challenges, hardships and sacrifices that our military children
endure on a regular basis because KIDS SERVE TOO! We are privileged to have a large population of military
families at Lehua and we look forward to celebrating our military children all month. Students will be helping
decorate the school, including a “Wall of Fame” that will individually identify every military student at Lehua
Elementary. Friday, April 15th, has been designated “Purple Up Day”! On this day we will encourage all
students and staff to wear purple attire, in lieu of their uniform, to show their support for military children. On this
morning, we will also welcome our military families and children to school with flags and signs. To conclude the
month, Lehua will be holding a short assembly on the afternoon of Friday, April 29th at 1:15PM. During this
assembly, we will be recognizing every military child individually and we would LOVE to have parent support!! If
parents are able to attend the assembly, they will be able to personally show their gratitude by placing a lei on
their child once their name is called. We understand that all parents may not be able to attend the event but they
are welcome to drop off a non-perishable lei with a personalized note sometime over the month and this will be
distributed by staff or soldiers at the assembly to make sure every child gets recognized. If parents would like to
help with any of these events, we are welcome to all help and support! Please contact Lehua Elementary’s

Sight is Beautiful Poster Contest
Pearl City District Complex Schools will be participating in a
sign waving event on Thursday, April 7th from 7:15am8:00am fronting Lehua Elementary School. Our mission is
to conduct a traffic awareness campaign that addresses
the dangers of running red traffic lights and stop signs
while educating the community about the importance of
safe driving.

Safety First
What: Meet, Greet & Eat Event
Where: Pearl City Peninsula Community Center
When: Friday, April 8th
Time: 8:30am – 9:30 am
Come join Mr. Tominaga and some outstanding Lehua Staff
members for our first ever Principal Coffee/Q&A session
on Pearl City Peninsula.
We have been noticing a number of students on campus
very early in the morning. Please remember that there is
no adult supervision on campus until 7:15am unless your
child is eating breakfast in the cafeteria. Breakfast is
served from 7:05am – 7:40am every morning.
Please observe the 5 MPH speed limit in our parking lot at
all times and only park in the designated “Visitor” parking
spaces. Please DO NOT PARK ON THE GRASS!
Lehua School Uniform t-shirts are now stocked at The
Custom Company’s new store location at 98-027
Hekaha Street, Aiea. The new location is in the Harbor
Shops behind the Goodwill Store in the pink building
(building 3, unit 12). Our new students are now
required to wear a school uniform shirt; as well as,
our existing students.
Spring Cleaning? Leaving LES? Please donate unneeded, clean, good condition school uniform t-shirts to the Health Room. Our students
make use of them daily for food spills, mud slips, and illness/injury related incidents.
