MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Christ Child Members,
It is hard to believe that a new term is upon us, and we are already in the middle of celebrating our 100th Anniversary
year! I am thankful for you, our hardworking and caring members, am honored and humbled to be serving as
your new president, am awed at the work of the presidents who have served before me, and am grateful to the
women who have agreed to serve in leadership roles for the 2016-2018 term.

Showcase
…Resale at its Best.
• August 1957 – First store opens at 11805 Buckeye Road. Cleveland Mayor Anthony J. Celebrezze attends the ribbon cutting;
300 guests walk up a red carpet into the store to attend a strudel party. Proceeds from the shop are used primarily for the
development of Monsignor Raymond J. Gallagher’s Don Bosco Farm, a rehabilitation center for delinquent boys. Merchandise
includes donated items as well as items received on consignment. The store operates under 8 committees – Pick-Up, Marking,
Consignment, Millinery (cleans and blocks hats, puts on new headbands, re-trims and re-styles…old clothes that do not sell are
even converted into hats), Selling, Stock Work, Display, and Publicity/Promotion (in addition to arranging style shows and hat
shows using items from the store, this committee arranges a skit about Showcase for the large general Christ Child meetings).
• Each Catholic parish has a Christ Child member with 3-5 bags which she circulates through the Ladies’ Guild to collect
donations. In addition, 5-8 coffee meetings are set up each month throughout the city for friends and neighbors of Christ
Child members to bring their donations for Showcase.
• 1958-1959 – Gross income is $23,722.
• 1967 – The Cleveland Press states, “Showcase was opened in 1957 to add revenues for welfare projects other than those
realized from the Starlight Ball, the society’s annual glamour date. It was the first important resale shop in the area.”
• 1970 –In order to acquaint husbands with Showcase (called the “Bonwit Teller of Buckeye”) and its surrounding neighbors, the
Society hosts a get acquainted cocktail party and dinner called “A Stroll on Buckeye.” The Buckeye Road Civics Association
presents Christ Child with a citation for its efforts and publicity to the area.
• 1975 – Showcase moves to 11909 Buckeye Road. The new store is double in size, paneled and carpeted.
• August 19, 1980 – A second store (Showcase West) opens at 11808 Lorain Road. There is a ribbon cutting and Christening
Party for members with Christ Child National President Kay Walsh in attendance. Initially, there is a “troubling lack of help as
membership support is virtually non-existent.”
• 1981 – Rent on Buckeye is increased to $500/month, which is thought too much for the area. The store (Showcase East)
moves to 5126 Warrensville Center Road. Consignment sales are phased out.
• August 1981 – Customers are treated to free coffee and cookies to celebrate Showcase West’s first anniversary.
• 1984 – Showcase West moves to 16306 Detroit Road.
• 1989/1990 – Remodeling of Showcase East results a “boutique look” with white paneling and mirrored walls.
• 1990 – The Sun Herald states: “What makes this resale shop stand out, besides its very affordable prices, is its bright
décor and well organized merchandise. ‘I thought I was in Higbees,’ said the husband of one customer….Profits go toward
camperships, day care, education, the handicapped, air fare for medical treatment, hunger centers, Templum House and
other special needs of women and children, and the elderly.”
• 1990/1991 – Marlene Lentz, Showcase East chair, increases jewelry sales by repairing jewelry and making unsaleable
necklaces into earrings.
• 1990 – Showcase West acquires the space next door for expansion. The entire space is remodeled.
• August 27, 1997 – Crowds of customers and members gather at both stores to share cake and memories in celebration of
Showcase’s 40th birthday.
• 2001/2002 – Problems arise at Showcase East; customer traffic is down, fewer quality items are donated, the traffic light
removed from in front of the store makes access difficult, competition with discount stores is increasing.
• 2004 – Showcase West introduces 50/50 Tuesdays with great success.
• 2007 – Showcase enters the electronic age as Monica Thomas sells donated “treasures” on eBay.
• January 7, 2008 – Members gather at Showcase East to toast the Society’s 50 year presence on Cleveland’s east side and
the friendships born in working together in the name of the Christ Child. Store fixtures are moved to the west side store as
this chapter in Christ Child history sadly ends.
• 2016 – Showcase moves to 15404 Madison Avenue.

Summer is an excellent time to pray for the country in which we are privileged to live. We can become
impatient or overwhelmed by conventions and the election process, by advertising and promises made
but not often kept, but I can’t think of any other place that I would rather live, can you? Our country
is the context in which we live and which makes it possible to choose to do good works as the Christ
Child Society does. Pray that God may touch the hearts of all the candidates for public office, and pray
even more that the candidates might be open to receive the touch of God. After all, God never forces
Himself on us (although sometimes we probably wish that He would!) We all need to invite God in…
and make Him welcome.

Centennial Circle
Letters were mailed to the membership in February asking each one to consider participation in the
“Centennial Circle” as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary. The response has been favorable and we
are thankful to all who are now part of the “Centennial Circle.” Remember that you will be recognized in
the print materials for the Red Wagon and Starlight
Ball. There is still time to participate. Please prayerfully consider membership in the “Centennial Circle.”

Reflection on my Term and Passing of the Gavel

Each of us present here today
represents work on behalf of
the Christ Child who lay
Helpless and innocent in his
meager bed, showing all of us
the life to be led.
Our work is not about
ostentation or recognition;
Our work is about children
– their innate goodness and
definition.
Our projects are active,
changing, and deep,
Layettes, cribs, beds, Pack ‘n
Plays® – for babies to sleep.
Coats and “My Stuff” bags for
children in need –
Uniforms, libraries, and
preschool enrichment
programs help children to read.
We’ve worked at Showcase
and applied for grants;
We’ve written budgets and
annual reports – all to enhance
– the lives of children.
We’ve guarded our finances,
engaged in dialogue, and told
our story true,
We’ve kept minutes and
attended meetings – certainly
more than a few.
We’ve sewn blankets, held
luncheons, and danced at balls,
And every year brings new
members who also feel the call.
We’ve tracked our membership
and our volunteer hours, and
our newsletters connect us all;
We’ve listened to spiritual
readings and said our prayers,
necessary for our work so tall.
We’ve learned about statistics
on poverty, about work that’s
been done.
We’ve asked ourselves again
and again: how do we make
life better for our littlest ones?
We’ve thanked our donors,
responded to changing laws,
and considered issues of
succession,
But none of our work,
regardless of scope, means
anything without compassion.
We’ve led and we’ve followed;
we’ve given and received advice;
We’ve asked for diverse voices
– most especially those we had
to entice.
We’ve supported each other in
illness, challenge, and loss.
We’ve supported each other no
matter what the cost.
That kind of genuine and
humble love brings endurance,
persistence and durability Just the kind we experience
profoundly when our age
becomes a century.
Our centennial year is very
unique and we’ve planned
much activity.
But through it all, what we
really seek, are ways to free
children from poverty.
And always there when we
need him, at luncheons, at
meetings, at Mass
Is Father Ralph, our spiritual
advisor, a beautiful influence
he does cast.
And what about change?
We’ve had our share - and
that’s ok; we don’t want
stagnant entrenchment
But nonetheless sometimes
during the frenzy of change,
we’ve wished that anguish
would turn to contentment.
So what of our changes?
What have they brought?
Yes, apprehension and
responsibility, it’s true.
But we did all we could and
knew beyond that, we had to
give it to God to do.
When we learned that our
Showcase space was for sale
and would likely be torn down,
We looked and we looked, and
with God’s good grace, a new
space was finally found.
It is with great gratitude that
I say goodbye as my term
comes to a close.
The privilege I have felt in
being your president you can
never adequately know.
And, of course, the next
change is clear: Parmadale
will become a park.
But through the kindness of
Catholic Charities, we expect
another good path to emerge
from the dark.
I am very confident in the next two
years; in Janie, you have a prize.
She values connection, works
with conviction, and jumps
headlong into jobs that arise.
So who are we and who shall we
become? Our Board pondered
questions large on retreat.
Does membership foster a
personal love of Christ? If not,
our mission we do not meet.
She is intelligent, strong, funny,
and caring
And as we learned during the
Showcase move, with handyman
tools she can be daring.
And what is the connection
between service and
sisterhood?
If nothing, are we really being
all that we could?
Because in the end, it’s not
about you; it’s not about me.
It’s about being together – with
the following three:
Faith, hope and charity, our
faith lived full;
Faith, hope and charity, life’s
true jewels.
Charity – all of us working as one
With love in our hearts, sharing
the work to be done.
Hope, the virtue that we convey
To the young ones whom we
serve every day.
Janie knows life’s challenges
and the complexities of life’s hue.
And because of it, she will be
a president most wonderfully fit
for the term anew.
So, Janie, I pass the gavel to
you; may strength always be
its mark.
Strength that emerges from
unity and diversity, strength
that is sparked – by love.
Hold the gavel high as you lead
us; hold it center as you enfold
us, but always, always, hold it low
Because the path of the lowly
Christ Child is the only path
where we can be a faithful, hopeful, and
charitable Christ Child Society.
And finally in faith we are all bound
Because when we are together,
God will abound.
In the days ahead, may we
always remember to walk in
service together
Respecting each other and
reflecting God’s love so that His
joy will grow beyond measure.

This year’s Country Kitchen is once again excited to offer
your “homemade” signature breads and desserts.
The most popular items in the past have been:
Mini Loaves (nut, banana, pumpkin & zucchini), Small
Cakes, Cupcakes, Muffins, Brownies, Kolachky, Biscotti,
Lemon Bars, Cookies , Doggie treats, Candies & Chocolate
covered Pretzels, or surprise us with something new!
A few helpful hints:
• Smaller portions are better sellers
• Items conveniently wrapped for transport
• Use plates/containers that you don’t want back
• Label your donations including ingredients – nuts or
gluten free, etc.

to advise:
• What you are planning to bring
• When you will bring it: morning of the luncheon, or
the day before at a specific location.

If you missed the Spring Luncheon, you have another

to our Christ Child chapter. Marlene Lentz, one of our
members, takes those donated pieces and turns them into
“new” pieces to sell. All proceeds are donated to Christ
Child. There will be a jewelry collection box at the Christ
Child Jewelry Table at the Red Wagon Luncheon. Your help
will be greatly appreciated!
REMINDER:
Hats & Mittens for Winter Jacket program collected at the
Red Wagon Luncheon.
Please remember to bring hats and mittens for the Winter
Jacket Program to the Red Wagon Luncheon. There will
be a special collection basket set up for your donations. If
the items were purchased, you are entitled to one hour of
service. If the items are handmade, please keep track of
the hours spent on the project. There will be a sheet at the
donation site to record your hours.

SHOWCASE IS NOW OPEN
Our Grand Opening Day was Wednesday, May 18th with
a line of people waiting outside to come in and shop.
Many oohs and aahs were heard from customers as
they walked through the front door.
Many members and their families who came to our
Open House Sunday afternoon, June 12th, were also
very complimentary as they entered the store. Lots of
socializing, tasting of homemade cookies, refreshments
and, of course, shopping made for an eventful and
memorable afternoon.
A big THANK YOU to all the ladies who helped with the
move, set-up and decorating to turn this new space into
a beautiful showcase. Everyone contributed so much
and it is much appreciated. Thank You Sue Girgis, our
Showcase Manager, for your guidance and direction.
I invite you to come in and see what is new. We need
volunteers. Please call or email Joan McAuliffe or Pat
Givens to schedule your time to volunteer and bring a
friend.

TIME IS HERE!
It is that time of year to renew your membership and
update/confirm your contact information. Enclosed with
this newsletter you will find the Annual Membership
Renewal Form and Volunteer Hours Record Form.
Please fill these out at your earliest convenience and
return the forms to the Christ Child Office along with
your payment. It is important that dues are received
no later than August 15, 2016 to remain a member in
good standing, be eligible to vote, and maintain your
listing in the roster.
New this year on the Annual Membership Renewal Form:
• Cell phone numbers. If you would like your cell
phone number published in the roster, please
provide it on the renewal form. Both home and cell
phone numbers, if provided, will be published in
the roster.
• A check box to use if your roster information has
not changed since last year, but please still fill out
the renewal form.
• A note asking that you highlight or circle any
changes from last year’s roster.

A Warm Reception from the Parish of St. Basil the Great
Several of our members are parishioners of St. Basil the Great in Brecksville. Ten of them took on the challenge
of “Spreading the Word about Christ Child” at their parish after Masses the weekend of April 23/24. Not only did
they speak to the congregation, they also set up an information table in the gathering area with a Layette, a “My
Stuff” Bag and literature. The parishioners of St. Basil were very receptive to hearing about the Christ Child Society.
Sixteen ladies expressed interest in joining, $300.00 of donations were collected, one gentleman offered to purchase
supplies for “My Stuff” Bags and one gentleman offered the use of his truck to transport or pick-up items for us. Fr.
Jenne, pastor of St. Basil’s, suggested that our message be shared with the seminarians so they also are aware of
the wonderful work we do. Our members were humbled by the generosity of their fellow parishioners.
PHOTOS NEEDED…
We will be producing a book of our history culminating with our 2016 year of celebration and we need your
help. We are looking for:
•Photos from past Christ Child events or activities. If possible submit the photos in electronic form.
•Photos of our 100th Anniversary events. When you attend any of our 100th Anniversary events, please take
photos. Most of us have a camera in our phone. Put them to good use.
Send photos to Liz Niehaus. Be sure to include the name and date of the event and the name(s) of anyone
in the photos. Photos will be returned.

some experience with Facebook, Google docs/calendar, or
basic computer/document editing and updating skills.

St. Francis Library
Two volunteers are needed in the St. Francis Library, one
each on the 2nd and 3rd Tuesday of the month, 9:45 a.m. to
2:30 p.m., beginning in September and running through May.
Working with another Christ Child volunteer, duties include
checking in and re-shelving returned books, helping students
in grades 4-8 find books either for class projects or pleasure
reading, checking out books students wish to borrow from
the library, and general straightening of the library space and
shelves. No prior library experience is necessary – simply a
love of children and books! This is a wonderful opportunity
to work directly with the children we serve. St. Francis School
is located at the corner of East 71st and Superior Avenue.

Merrick House – Preschool Literacy Enrichment
Do you enjoy reading to children? Volunteer to read to the
preschoolers at Merrick House. Volunteers are needed July
19. Contact Kathy Yoakum to sign up.
Please consider volunteering in the Grandmother’s program
and give the little children there your time, care and joy, reflecting Mary Virginia Merrick’s example of love for the least
of God’s little ones. Contact Kathy Yoakum to plan your first
visit on any day convenient for you and to begin serving as a
Grandmother at Merrick House.

Michelle
… An Angel Among Us
Michelle Pitoscia, my friend and hair stylist, has become a wonderful supporter of the Christ Child
Society. Michelle has 28 years of experience working in the hair industry and has owned Signature
Styles, LLC for 16 years. Her salon is located within PHIX Salon Suites on West 130th Street in
Strongsville.
While having my hair cut one afternoon she offered to display and sell the jewelry I make from old,
used jewelry in her Strongsville Salon. I asked her what she would charge for this service. Michelle
answered, “I will not charge anything, just use all the money to help children in crisis.” She has set
up 3 separate display areas in her salon for the jewelry and has become a super saleswoman. By
September 2015 sales of over $300 was turned over to Christ Child at the Red Wagon Luncheon.
Since then, she has sold $2,040 which I presented to Christ Child Society at the Open House of our
new Showcase Store.
My heartfelt thanks to you, Michelle, for your help to the Christ Child Society to continue our endeavors
in supplying children with cribs, layettes, winter jackets, school uniforms and “My Stuff” bags.

Spread the word about Christ Child
Would you be willing to share the beauty of the Christ Child
Society with members of your parish? We are looking to
spread the word about the Christ Child Society so that we are
no longer the “best kept secret” but the “best told story.” We
are asking for members to speak at their parishes after Sunday Masses. A script will be provided. Contact Susan Ferraro
Smith if you are interested in helping.

Our traditional Provisional Bus Tour of our Christ
Child service projects was held May 2nd. Everyone
enjoyed hearing, seeing and visiting our Service
Projects. Our tour ended with an enjoyable lunch
at The South Side Restaurant in Tremont.

Spring Luncheon
Our Spring Luncheon and Installation of Officers was held June
15th at the Shaker Heights Country Club. During our annual
business meeting, President Susan Ferraro Smith thanked
the Executive Officers and the Board for their commitment to
the Christ Child Society. Each of the ladies received a rose
and a gold disc.
A highlight of the Spring Luncheon was the announcement
of the Mary Virginia Merrick Award winner. Cathy Caruso
presented this prestigious award to Linda Sheehan, an active
member for 51 years. Linda was surprised, honored and
humbled.
At the end of the luncheon, Susan introduced the 2016-2018
Officers and they were installed by Fr. Ralph. Before passing
the gavel to Janie Nickodem, Susan shared her reflections on
her term as President in the form of a poem. (see Reflection
on My Term and Passing the Gavel on page 5)

An Evening of History
The White Glove event was held at the Western Reserve Historical Society
on Saturday, April 30. Fifty-six members and guests attended. We viewed
samplings of our Christ Child Chapter history from the early years to date.
We compared an annual report from one of our early years to this year’s.
We also viewed Ball books, Showcase then and now, and Merrick House
history. As we enjoyed dinner provided by Marigold Catering, we listened to
John Grabowski, Ph.D., Senior Vice President & Krieger Mueller Historian
at the Western Reserve Historical Society, speak about who the Christ Child
Society of Cleveland served in the early years and the role of the Catholic
Diocese of Cleveland in the last 100 years. Everyone in attendance received
one of John’s books entitled “There Are No Strangers at the Feast.” The
newly restored Euclid Beach Grand Carousel was open to our group and
many enjoyed a ride on it.
In closing, I would like to personally thank Liz Niehaus, Janie Nickodem and
Stephanie West for their time and effort in combing through the Archives and
determining the highlights of our 100 years!
