Message From the Manager–
Message From the Board-
Sergio Salazar, General Manager
Ron Botello, Board Chairman
It is hard to believe that June is almost here. As I
write this article, the forecast calls for more rain
later this week and through the Memorial Day
weekend. The one thing that you can be assured
of living in San Antonio is that the rain will end
shortly and the heat will come quickly. Although
the amount of rain days has hurt golf games and tennis matches, we
have to realize that in the long run this only helps the area refill its area
lakes and the aquifer. The huge benefit is also the condition of our golf
courses and the grounds surrounding the clubhouse and tennis facility
has never looked better. In the five years I have been here I have never
seen the grass so green.
The downside of the rain has been the affect that it has had on our
business in general. While our food and beverage business has been
remarkably strong and trending 15% higher than prior year, membership sales have been down slightly along with activity on the golf
courses and tennis facility. Hopefully, there will be a pent up demand
and everyone will decide to use the Club more often this summer compared to years past. As I said, the golf courses look great, so does the
tennis center and swimming pool. Our food outlets are ready and we
can’t wait to see you at the Club this summer.
Wow, what a contrast from last year. Now it
doesn't appear the rain is ever going to
stop. Guess you have to be careful what you ask
for, but let's face it we needed the rain, and our
ponds are finally filling up. Now that the pumps
are working the courses are looking awesome. With children getting out of school for the
summer and our college kids returning home the activity at your club
will only increase. For those of you that have not taken advantage of
our new Lounge, or the new menu's please consider bringing the family out and you will find improved service and excellent food. We
have hired a new chef and he comes with great credentials, as we make
every effort to improve all aspects of your club experience.
Everyone should have received a request to donate to the Sonterra
Scholarship Fund. All money received will be used to fund scholarships for our staff members that are attending higher education
classes. We hope to raise enough to fund this program for years to
come. We also had one member that felt strong enough to agree to
match what we receive. So any donation is doubled, please consider
taking part. I look forward to seeing you at one of our many events
and as always......Thanks for Being a Member.

Golf Corner
On the Greens– Donny
Latham,
What a difference a year makes. Since my
last newsletter we have received over 15
inches of rainfall. The golf course looks
very green and is growing like crazy. We
are doing all we can to keep up with all the
growth. We aerified the North course
fairways and removed some thatch material. This temporary
scarring has already begun to heal and will provide much
needed gas exchange in the root zone and also gives our fairways channels for ALL of this rain to penetrate. I suspect that
our fairways will be much better this summer. We also pulled a
small quarter inch core out of the greens on our South Course.
These greens are healing and will continue to improve. I have
been asked by many about our bunkers on both courses. With
this much rainfall, we have had to repair the washouts several
times. Each time we receive a large amount of heavy rain, the
sand becomes very compacted. We will continue to add sand
to both North and South to “fluff up” the green side bunkers.
As soon as we can get our cultivator in these bunkers we will do
so. This will also help soften up the bunkers and allow the wet
compacted sand to dry and become more playable. Looking
ahead for June I suspect that we will be in great shape. I know
the hot sun is on its way. With all this rainfall our lakes and
ponds should be full and we will have water to run all water
features and irrigate the golf course as needed. Some projects
on the list for June will include expanding our chipping green
by 18 North. We have the ability to push rocks out of the way
and bring in topsoil and sod about 30 yards. This will enhance
your arrival to 18 N and will also provide you an even better
practice area. I know this will make a dramatic improvement to
our practice area and also beautify the area around the 18 green.
Also in June we will be aerifying the North Course Mini Verde
greens. We will pull a 3/8” core on June 15th. We will return
these greens to playable as soon as possible. We have not aerified these greens since last July and they are in need of a good
aerification. I look forward to a great summer and look forward to seeing you all out on the golf courses soon.
Sonterra Women’s
Golf Association
SWGA’s Guest Day brought out a smaller than usual field this year, but the
weather cooperated and everyone enjoyed the lively competition. Winners of
a scorecard playoff was the team of Colburn, Hogan, Cohn and Guidry. Second place honors went to the team of Turner, Leib, Stramer and Cox. Third
place went to the team of Rosenthal, Poutra, Nail, and Fuhrmann. A big
Thank You to our favorite Pro, Jeff Hunter, and his staff for helping make the
event a success. The course was absolutely beautiful thanks to the efforts of
Donny Latham and his staff. The rainy days may have interfered with our golf
play, but they have certainly been a blessing for our courses! We’re looking
forward to great turnouts for the President’s Cup and ACE/STAR events
coming up. Give the Pro Shop a call and come join us!

Golf News– Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
As we head into June we are coming off one of the wettest
Mays I can remember in my eight plus years. The timing of
fertilizers and aerification could not have been better and
we will all enjoy the fruits of Donny's labor. Please obey all
cart rules, fill those divots and repair all ball marks. Remember that being a steward of this great game means to
leave the golf course better than you find it.
As you may have guessed our play is down somewhat this
year so we are anticipating you all will be out in droves. We have all kind of
great events planned so please watch you emails and texts. If we can help you
find a game please call the shop and we will happily oblige.
Looking for the perfect company outing. How about golf and dinner at the
club? We would love to host you & up to 24 players any day of the week and
then help with dinner reservations in the club house. Team building, corporate
outing or just a bunch of good friends, give us a call and we will set it up.
We are happy to announce that Heather Levow will be joining the golf staff.
Heather is a Class A PGA Professional and comes to us from Balcones in
Austin. Heather is a very good teacher and enjoys helping with shop duties
and merchandising. Her start date will be on or around June 1, so please come
by and say hello.

We Are the MGA
The MGA’s purpose is to promote fellowship, fun and friendly
competition for Sonterra members. We do this by sponsoring
golf tournaments, holding related events like pre-tournament
smokers, and supporting Club-sponsored tournaments, like the
annual Club Championships and Member-Guest event.
We are pleased to report that we have grown to almost 370
members, with nearly 170 Sonterra golfers having already
played in at least one MGA tournament this year. To continue
to be successful, the MGA will keep striving to improve the
quality of our events.

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
May is one of our busiest and hectic months. We began
the Member Guest Tennis Tournament with fingers
and toes crossed because of the weather pattern being
one of our wettest yet. We couldn’t have been luckier
and had the most perfect weekend of the year. Our
theme this year, “Margaritaville”, set the mood for what
was to come—a lot of tennis, food and partying. We
are so very lucky to have such a passionate, imaginative
and generous member guest committee, members and
volunteers that gave so much of their time to make this
the foremost Member Guest Tennis Tournament
around. We again raised $10,000.00 to donate to ANY
BABY CAN. A special thank you to our members and
outside sponsors who came forward with deep pockets
to help with their sponsorship dollars and gifts. We
could not have done it without them. Many thanks to
the Sonterra food and beverage staff—the food and service was right on. How
about a round of applause to Gary Tupa and his team- the grounds and landscaping are beautiful—hard to find anything much prettier-- Sonterra again “five
stars”.
Hats off to the following committee members: Melissa Cliver, Wendy Hammond,
Mary Lynn Gayler, Joanne Johnson, Linda Walsdorf, Monica Kuehlem, Chantal
Smith, Kim Powers, Lucy Landwehr, Janie Kampschmidt, Rhonda Stacy, Laurie
Blakey, Mike Thatcher and Christy Godwin.

assume the court is open after 10 minutes if you haven’t called to inform us of your delay.
 Guest Policy- Guests are limited to one visit per month. House guests must be registered through the membership department for longer club

 Towels - The hotter it becomes the more towels we go through and disappear. Please help us with this huge problem of “THE MISSING TOWEL”



mystery. We have strategically placed the towel bins around the facility for easy disposal. The cost is astronomical.
Trash- The tennis facility looks beautiful and we know how proud our members are of their club. Please help by disposing of your cups and trash in
the trash cans provided for you. FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED ON THE COURTSTennis Dress Code- Men are required to wear shirts with sleeves. No cut-offs, bathing suits, cargo pants, or workout tops are permitted. No blacksoled shoes of any type other than specifically manufactured for tennis.

Note from Josh – Director of the Junior Program
"Congratulations to Sonterra's own 18U Intermediate team (The Dominators), who competed at this years 2015 Junior Team Tennis
Sectional Championships in New Braunfels, TX at Newks!! The Sonterra
Dominators placed 3rd after a very long, windy, and rainy weekend.
Match delays were the trend on Sunday as players, parents, and coaches
from all over Texas, huddled around a small, 5 court indoor facility. I
want to thank the players and parents for sticking it out for what was a
very exciting time for our Sonterra junior program. Great win guys!
