Meet the Monks
Now that other monks are helping with the Parish Masses on a regular
cycle, we will be running a series of introductions so that parishioners know
a little about the monks and have a basis for getting to know them better:
Dom James Hood
Dom James Hood will be presiding at the Saturday evening Mass on July 16 th and the Sunday evening Mass
on July 17 th . He will also be presiding at the Conventual Mass in the Abbey Church on Sunday morning at
10 a.m. Dom James is the head of Downside School’s chaplaincy team and often says the Masses in St
Benedict’s Primary School. He is Novice Master and recently oversaw a meeting of novices from the
communities of monks and nuns across England. He has been Master of Ceremonies in the Abbey Church
for many years and in 2004 walked the pilgrimage route to Compostela.
Dom Leo Maidlow Davis
CAR PARK NEWS
The car park behind St Benedict’s church is almost
finished. Some difficulties with the ground have
meant that it is not going to be complete until the
beginning of August. Then you will be able to enter
the car park from Abbey Road and leave by the
A367 exit beside Ramsay House, without needing to
turn round in the car park.
The finished project
will include signage and guidance.

FORTHCOMING PILGRIMAGES
The Holy Land with Dom Anselm Brumwell—21-30 July 2017
This pilgrimage has been specifically designed for young adults between 18 and 30, who may or may not be
practising Catholics. We will be visiting the most important holy Christian places in Israel and the West
Bank, together with some impressive archaeological sites. We will spend a night in the Negev Desert
among the Bedouin, and experience the joy of camel riding! There will be lots of opportunities for
exploring places on foot, swimming in the Jordan River, Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee, together with
kayaking in the beautiful Banias nature reserve. Price will be dependent on numbers, and the cost of
flights, but will not exceed £900. Downside has been able to secure this pilgrimage at a considerable
discount on normal commercial rates. Any Parishioners who are interested in joining the Pilgrimage,
should let one of the Parish Priests know if they require financial assistance, as the Parish may be able to
help with this. Full details are to be found in the itinerary, available within the ‘Monastery & Parish’ Events
section of www.downside.co.uk
Fatima 2017
This Pilgrimage is now fully booked but we are trying to secure additional accommodation. If you would
like to join the group, please contact Rina to be added to the reserve list! rinabird@outlook.com
PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND
Dom Leo recently led a group of 33 to the Holy
Land. Pilgrim, Rina Bird, wrote, “I would encourage
anyone who is able, to make their own pilgrimage
there. Without exception, everyone in our group
was astounded at how much they learnt, and how
their understanding of the Bible had dramatically
improved.”

SALVAGE HUNTERS COME TO DOWNSIDE
Dom Leo welcomed one of the UK’s top decorative antique dealers, Drew Pritchard, to Downside on
Thursday. Drew arrived at Downside with a TV crew to record an episode of Salvage Hunters for the
Discovery Channel. The team had arrived in Stratton-on-the-Fosse as the final stop in the series and
they enjoyed spending a warm and sunny day sifting through items in the Works Yard and store
cupboards. To find out what they selected for the programme you’ll need to tune in…look here to find
out when the programme will be broadcast: http://www.questtv.co.uk/salvage -hunters/
