AFGHANISTAN SUPPORT MISSION # 2 SHIPPING GUIDELINES FOR OVERSEAS
AFGHANISTAN SUPPORT MISSION # 2 The support for 5th ANGLICO, deploying from Camp Hansen, Okinawa, is simpler, but less cost effective than was our first support mission for 1st ANGLICO. The most straightforward approach is for each of us to ship goods at our own initiative. In this briefing, we’ll provide: Guidelines and options for shipping. LtCol Palazzo’s FPO address. A list of the items that LtCol Grice’s 1st ANGLICO Marines requested. A USPS Flat Rate APO/FPO box, ready to ship to a young Marine arty FO, now deployed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He’ll be surprised to see this shipment posted from Quantico. The rest is up to each of us. I anticipate that several of us, including me, are willing to purchase and ship goods for anyone who is not able to purchase, package, and ship themselves, but would like to participate in this support mission. 5th ANGLICO C.O. volved in the past and upcoming missions have impressive credentials. A few of the many accomplishments for both LtCol Grice (1st ANGLICO) and LtCol Palazzo (5th ANGLICO) are included in this briefing. Ask him for his contact info if you’d like. Tom can also be contacted via “PM” on our forum. LtCol Palazzo's personal decorations include: the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and, the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star. The two ANGLICO leaders who are in- SHIPPING GUIDELINES FOR OVERSEAS MILITARY ADDRESSES For packages, Priority Mail is only way to go. If a merchant ships a package to your APO/FPO address using standard or "surface" mail, it will likely be a while before you see it. This is because all Priority Mail eventually makes its way onto an airplane. Surface mail does not. Sending a package via surface mail may take up to 8 weeks because it will be placed on a ship instead of a plane. More guidelines are on the following pages. THE USPS FLAT RATE BOX FOR APO/FPO ADDRESSES One very convenient option for shipping is the Flat Rate box that is available at your local post office. Only $12.50 when used to send to APO/FPO addresses; $2.00 less than domestic pricing. Box features the “America Supports You” logo and APO/FPO addressing block. APO / FPO “STATES” "AE", "AA" and "AP" The APO/FPO "states" of "AE", "AA", and "AP" are the only legitimate states to use for an APO/FPO addresses. It is common knowledge that you can use "NY" for "AE", "CA" for "AP", and "FL" for "AA", but you run the risk of having your credit card rejected because the billing address they have on file (with AA, AE or AP for the state) does not match what you submitted online. You don't need to provide anything except for a standard text box for the city portion of an APO or FPO address. The city will always be either "APO" or "FPO" in a properly formatted APO FPO address. Here's the current ANGLICO address: LtCol Louis Palazzo 5th ANGLICO (FWD), HQ Plt OPSEC - REMOVED FPO OTHER APO / FPO RESTRICTIONS From http://www.oconus.com/ZipCodes.asp : In general, the limits are Packages may not exceed 70 lbs. (Some zip codes have lower limits) All packages must be sent via the U.S. Postal System. The post office also requires companies or individuals to hand deliver packages being sent to APO/FPO addresses. (This is one reason why many merchants won't ship to APO/FPO addresses.) Firearms, alcohol, perishable foodstuffs and certain hazardous items also are restricted. Each zip code has a more detailed list of the restrictions for certain types of products. Packages may not exceed 130 inches in combined length and girth. (This means if you have a package that is 100" in length and 40" when you measure around it, you cannot send the item) Page 3 Volume 1, Issue 1 CAN YOU REMEMBER ? OF COURSE YOU CAN ! ANGLICO PICS FROM ACROSS THE GENERATIONS You and your brothers, with nothing but a poncho between you and the elements. But you were young and strong, and maybe you enjoyed it at times. Something from home always brought you great joy. DON’T FORGET : Newsletter Title Page 4 REQUESTS AND DELIVERY The original request list from the 1st ANGLICO deployment, in no particular order: Hair Clipper sets DVD movies / TV Series Battery powered electric travel razors Ground coffee Coffee makers (electric - our vehicles have power) Hot water heaters (electric - our vehicles have power) Cases of Ramen Redbull Nuts (pistachios/peanuts/sunflower seeds) Single serving Propel drink mixes Copenhagen Magazines Cigarettes (Marlboros and Camels) Vacuum sealed tuna packets Hot chocolate mix/Tea bags/ instant coffee packets (Coffee Singles- teabag type) Baby wipes The final shopping list for the 1st ANGLICO deployment, in no particular order: Miscellaneous books Copies of Tom Petri’s “Lightning from the Sky” Cases of Ramen Cases of Copenhagen Boxes of tea bags Cases of baby wipes Cases of summer sausage Roasted sunflower seeds, raw, in shell Dried mango Cases of Gatorade powder Cases of hot chocolate mix Changes were made for practical and economic reasons. For example, inexpensive glass coffee pot’s wouldn’t be safe, and $60 stainless pots with coffee makers would eat up the budget too quickly. CUSTOMS DECLARATION FORM Page 5 Volume 1, Issue 1 Tom Petri’s support mission for 1st ANGLICO was so much fun for me, personally, that I couldn’t resist a second effort. I know that many of us are already committed to the maximum extent possible, in support of great causes. These include the Marine Corps League, the Marine Corps Association, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and countless wonderful organizations that are worthwhile. However, if you have some spare change and would like to let a young 5TH ANGLICO Marine or Sailor know he’s appreciated, maybe this will make it easier. TALK TO THESE YOUNG ANGLICANS ! When you send a package, consider including a letter or a card with a message. As we all have observed here at Quantico, these young Marines are squared away. We’re proud of them, and want them to know. If your budget for such things is already committed, then just send a message of appreciation and encouragement. Did you know that you can purchase custom USMC cards from a variety of online sources? I’ll bet if you look at the gift shop over at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and at the Marine Corps Association bookstore in Quantico, you’ll find a selection as well. Another consideration: these Anglicans may be there over the HOLIDAY SEASON. I plan to parse out my own packages over the first two-thirds of their deployment. That should ensure that they have more packages from home at a time when they’re missing their families.
