Automatrics Invited to Thatcham British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards Volkswagen win Best Manufacture Automatrics were invited to the British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA) held at Thatcham on the 11 October 2012. The awards were established in 2004 to recognise those manufactures who produced the most secure cars. The winners received their awards from Jeremy Brown the Minister of State for Crime Prevention David Meader from Direct line (the UK’s largest motor insurer) addressed delegates on some of the success’s through owners who had fitted Thatcham Quality Assured after theft recovery systems. However he detailed a relative low take up of this technology highlighting the hassle to install and transfer equipment. Jeremy Brown further explained the Governments ‘Local to Global’ new National Crime Agency which will be operational by the end of 2013 in response to the new crime threats. Automatrics were one of only three After Theft Recovery security providers who attended the event run in association with Thatcham. Thatcham CEO Mr. Peter Shaw highlighted the importance for the industry to keep ahead of evolving serious organised crime. Peter detailed vehicle software weakness which represented a new threat from hackers. This latest theft trend of highly skilled criminals reprogramming vehicle key codes through the vehicle Onboard Diagnostic Port (OBD). Other statistics included a continuance of the downward trends in theft frequency but with an upward trend in theft claim value through an increase in higher valued vehicles being stolen. Ultimately vehicles will still be stolen through varying methods including physically lifting vehicles.
