This week I have had the privilege of escorting some public
speaking students to participate in final rounds.
Yesterday I proudly watched as Anastasia H and Jonah O
participated in the Bear Pit Public Speaking Finals which were
held at Parliament House and chaired by Mike Baird. I was
amazed by the level of all speakers who participated in both
the Stage 2 and Stage 3 finals and was especially proud of
Anastasia and Jonah for their efforts. Anastasia’s topic was
‘Every family has a story to tell’ and Jonah’s was
‘The more we communicate the less we say’.
Today, I went to the Arts Unit at Lewisham to support Leonardo P as a finalist in the Multicultural Public Speaking Awards.
Leonardo’s speech topic was ‘What it means to be an Australian’ and he was very humble in the delivery of quite an emotional speech.
I applaud these three students for their courage and calmness
in delivering their speeches to crowds of strangers so well.
Thank you to Mrs Donaldson, Mrs Archer and Mrs McConaghy for assisting with the public speaking competitions at
the school.
The whole school celebrated Book Week yesterday and I arrived back at school to be met by a sea of colourful characters. The students and teachers alike were dressed as all
sorts of characters from their favourite books.
A special feature of the day was the visit by author Aaron
Blabey who read some of his books to the children and also
showed how he planned his story writing and created his illustrations. Thank you to Mrs Neill for organising the visit from
Aaron.
It has been a very busy start to the week!

P & C meets at 7pm the 2nd Monday of each month during school terms.

LOST PROPERTY UPDATE
There are regularly many items of lost property in our lost property bins, located at the bottom of the
Year 1 staircase.
Teachers aim to instil all our school values, and in relation to lost property, the value of: ‘taking responsibility for our belongings’.
We would appreciate your support in helping us to manage the ‘overflowing’ lost property. Here are
some suggestions to help teach your child to care for their own belongings.




Clearly label all items, including lunch boxes, drink bottles and jumpers
Have a conversation with your child to check they have all their belongings at the end of each day
Ask your child to take more responsibility for finding any missing items, by asking them to search or
help you search for their belongings
Rather than buying another lunch box or jumper teach your child the importance of searching for
missing items, such as scanning the playground, looking in their classroom or going to the lost property bins.
We appreciate your time in assisting us to reduce the lost property that accumulates every week.

BOOK WEEK
The Year 2 Teachers got in the spirit of Book Week on Monday. Can you guess which Roald Dahl book
"Lights up their World"?
Public Speaking at Manly Village
We’ve had a very exciting Public Speaking week this week with three of our students giving their speeches at the Multicultural Regional Final and the Bear Pit Public Speaking final.
Leonardo P from year 3 presented both his prepared speech and an impromptu speech at The Arts Unit,
Lewisham today for the Multicultural final.
Anastasia H and Jonah O spoke at State Parliament House on Monday in the Bear Pit Final.
We are proud of all our students who represented our school so well.
MUSICA VIVA
Vietnam Veteran’s Day – 18th August
Musica Viva has been inspiring students across
Australia for over thirty years. This year there will
be a performance for students K–4 by “Pastance”
performing Celtic Connections on Monday 14
September in the school hall.
Year 6 students attended the Memorial Service at the
cenotaph in Manly to commemorate Vietnam Veteran’s
Day. This service was particularly significant for our
students this year as we are currently studying Vietnam
in history through a focus on migration to Australia in
the twentieth century. Our Stage 3 students have learnt
a great deal about Australia’s participation in this conflict and the reasons why so many Vietnamese people
fled to Australia.
This performance is a journey through the diverse
styles and stirring melodies of Celtic and Anglo
folk traditions. This performance builds on preparatory work done in the classroom, and shows students the power music has to tell a story.
Payment for this activity was included in your
Semester 2 invoice.
FATHER’S DAY STALL
Next week bring your money to buy your Dad
a lovely gift for Father’s Day.
Special presents on Sale from Monday.
Our school captain, Sophie M, laid a wreath at the cenotaph on behalf of the Manly Village School Community.
Aaron Blabey's Visit
The whole school was entertained by the amazing Aaron Blabey on Monday when he visited the school
for Book Week.
What an accomplished man - actor, author and illustrator.
P&C NEWS
It is time to review our Manly Village Public School uniform. We are considering
having more options available, particularly for the older grades, so students feel
comfortable and proud to be wearing their Manly Village Public School uniform.
This survey shows proposed additions and changes to the uniform. At this stage there are no
proposed changes to the cold weather jumpers, white MVPS polo shirts or the green MVPS polo
shirt.
The survey has been split into two parts to allow you to view the pictures of the proposed changes/additions whilst answering the survey questions. There is a different link to each part of the
survey. We encourage you to answer both parts of the survey. Part one contains five multiple
choice questions and part two contains 3 multiple choice questions and a comment box.
The survey will be closed on September 8 at 3:30pm.
