The Fokker Dr.1 is one of the most famous and recognizable fighter planes of World War One. The Fokker Dr.1 (Dr standing for Dreidecker or 3 wings) was designed by Reinhold Platz and was ordered into production on July 14, 1917, in response to the success of the British Sopwith Triplane earlier in the year. The first production model of the Fokker Dr.1 was delivered personally by Tony Fokker to the Red Baron, Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen, and shortly after that in August of 1917 it made its first appearance in combat. Pilots were impressed with its maneuverability and soon scored victories with the nimble triplane. In the hands of an experienced pilot, the Fokker Dr.1 was a formidable dogfighter. The three wings produce tremendous lift which, combined with its small size and weight, meant it could out climb and out-turn almost any opponent. OUR RECOMMENDATIONS This section describes our recommendations to help you in deciding which types of accessories to purchase for your new airplane. Please read through this entire section very carefully. We have provided you with recommendations that, if followed, will result in a great flying airplane. Failure to follow our recommendations may result in a poor flying airplane. Recommended power system We recommend that the Fokker Dr.1 Triplane EP ARF be flown using a brushless, direct drive outrunner motor. The combination listed below is lightweight and will provide ample power. ● KMS KBM 31/12 Brushless Outrunner Motor KMS 18Amp Brushless ESC for LiPO ● APC 9 x 6 Slow Flyer Propeller ● Impulse Power 3C 900mAH LiPO Battery ● Pro-Peak Quattro LiPO DC Charger ● recommended radio, receiver and servos You will need to use a 4 or more channel transmitter with a 4 or more channel micro receiver. You can use just a basic transmitter, although one that features dual rates would be better. The receiver should be as light as possible, preferably around 9 grams The servos you use should be the lightest available, yet still have an adequate amount of torque. We suggest using servos that weigh no more than 5 grams. For the ailerons, we suggest two 4 gram 10oz/in servos and for the elevator and rudder we suggest two 5 gram 12oz/in servos. Cirrus CS101 micro servos will work well for the ailerons and CS201 micro servos will work well for the elevator and the rudder. It is possible with heat and humidity changes that the covering on your airplane may wrinkle or sag. This trait is inherent in all types of heat-shrink material. To remove any wrinkles that might be visible you will need to use a heat-sealing covering iron. Follow this simple procedure to remove the wrinkles: ❑ Plug in and turn on the sealing iron to the medium-high temperature setting. Allow the sealing iron to heat up for approximately 5 - 7 minutes. ❑ After the sealing iron has reached temperature, lightly apply the sealing iron to the wrinkled section of the covering. Move the sealing iron slowly over the wrinkled section until the covering tightens and the wrinkles disappear. If the color layer smears from any of the seams you can remove the color streaks using a paper towel soaked with a small quantity of acetone. Checking the Wings for Warps: While many precautions have been taken during the production process to ensure that your airplane is constructed error-free, you should check the wings to ensure that they have no warps. Warps can develop from the different temperature and humidity extremes seen during the transport and shipping processes. To check for warps, look at each wing from the tip of the wing. Look carefully down both the leading edge and the trailing edge. They should be straight. If you see a warp, you can remove it by twisting the wing in the opposite direction of the warp, then by reshrinking the covering material tightly. Storage and Transport: We do not suggest storing your airplane in an extremely hot environment (like the back of your car in direct sunlight) for any length of time. The extreme heat could cause the covering material to wrinkle and possibly damage the fragile components of the radio control system or battery. Page MOTOR AND COWLING INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (1) Fuselage ❑ (1) Plywood Motor Mount Plate ❑ (1) Cowling ❑ (3) M2 x 8mm Wood Screws ❑ (1) Motor Mount Stick You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond 5 Minute Epoxy ❑ Pencil ❑ Kwik Bond Thin C/A ❑ Masking Tape ❑ # 0 and # 2 Phillips Head Screwdrivers ❑ Paper Towels ❑ Excel Modeling Knife ❑ Rubbing Alcohol ❑ Electric or Hand Drill ❑ NHP Epoxy Mixing Sticks ❑ 1/16" (1.6mm) and 1/8" (3.1mm) Drill Bits ❑ NHP Epoxy Mixing Cups ❑ Ruler sTEP 1A: INSTALLING THE MOTOR - KMS BRUSHLESS OUTRUNNER OR SIMILAR ❑ Using the scribe lines on the plywood motor mount plate, position and drill holes through the motor mount plate to install your motor. ❑ Install your motor onto the plywood motor mount plate, using the screws provided with your motor. IMPORTANT Use pan head screws to install your motor, so that when tightened, they'll be flush with the surface of the motor mount plate. This will prevent the screw heads from interfering with the installation of the motor assembly onto the firewall. ❑ Glue the motor mount plate to the firewall, making sure that the radius along the top of the motor mount plate matches the radius along the top of the cutout in the firewall. PRO TIP Depending on the length of the motor wires, you might want to connect your ESC now, before installing the motor. If the motor wires are too short, it can be difficult to reach them through the cockpit later. sTEP 1B: INSTALLING THE MOTOR - Brushed stick mount motor ❑ Carefully cut out the three mounting squares and the circle that are etched on the firewall. A sharp modeling knife works well for this. Page ❑ Glue the motor mount stick to the firewall from the back. ❑ Slide your motor assembly firmly onto the motor mount stick. When positioned correctly, the back of the nut that the propeller fits over should be 1-3/4" (44mm) in front of the firewall (A). This will ensure that the cowling will line up when it's installed. ☞Depending on the motor assembly that you're using, you may need to cut the motor mount stick shorter to achieve the correct measurement. IMPORTANT The back of the motor is supposed to slide into the cutout near the bottom of the firewall. It might be necessary for you to enlarge the hole slightly so that your motor will fit without rubbing against the firewall. ❑ When satisfied with the alignment, secure the motor assembly to the motor mount stick using two short wood screws (not included). sTEP 2: INSTALLING THE cowling ❑ Align the cowling on the fuselage and hold it in place with pieces of masking tape. When aligned properly, the molded lip on the back of the cowling should overlap the front of the fuselage evenly and the edges of the cutout in the bottom of the cowling should line up equally over the bottom sides of the fuselage. The hole in the front of the cowling should be centered around the motor shaft, too. ❑ The cowling is held in place with three wood screws - one at each bottom corner and one at the top. Drill 1/16" (1.6mm) pilot holes into the cowling and through the fuselage, then install the wood screws. PRO TIP Before installing the wood screws, apply a drop of thin C/A into the pilot holes to strengthen the surrounding plywood. ☞Plywood plates have been preglued into the fuselage to thread the wood screws into. Page STABILIZER AND RUDDER INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (1) Horizontal Stabilizer with Elevator ❑ (2) Plywood Control Horns (Large) ❑ (1) Rudder ❑ (2) M3 x 25mm Machine Screws ❑ (6) C/A-Style Hinges You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thin and Thick C/A ❑ Ruler ❑ # 2 Phillips Head Screwdriver ❑ Pencil ❑ Excel Modeling Knife ❑ T-Pins sTEP 1: HINGING THE ELEVATOR ❑ Mark the four locations for the elevator hinges onto the elevator. ❑ Carefully cut four hinge slots in the leading edge of the elevator at the marks that you drew. IMPORTANT Make sure that you cut the hinge slots on the centerline of the leading edge. ❑ Push one T-pin through the center of four hinges, then slide the hinges into the hinge slots, making sure that you push each hinge in up to the T-Pins. ☞Don't glue the hinges into the elevator yet. PRO TIP The T-pins will keep the hinges centered when you hinge the elevator. ❑ Cut the corresponding hinge slots in the trailing edge of the stabilizer, then push the elevator and its hinges into place. IMPORTANT Again, make sure to cut the hinge slots on the centerline of the trailing edge. ❑ Remove the T-Pins and push the elevator up against the trailing edge. There should be no more than 1/32" wide hinge gap and the tips of the elevator should not rub against the ends of the stabilizer. ❑ While holding the elevator tight against the trailing edge, pivot the elevator down 45º and apply 3-4 drops of thin C/A to the exposed area of each hinge. Turn the stabilizer over and repeat for the other side of the hinges. Page sTEP 2: installing the elevator control horn IMPORTANT The elevator pushrod exit slot is on the right side of the fuselage. When installing the control horn in the next procedure, it's important to install the control horn so that it's toward the bottom of the elevator and will be on the RIGHT SIDE of the fuselage when the stabilizer assembly is mounted. ❑ Cut away the covering material from over only the bottom of the control horn mounting slot in the elevator. Please see the important note above. ❑ Glue one control horn into the mounting slot, making sure that the control horn is facing forward. sTEP 3: mounting the stabilizer assembly ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the stabilizer mounting holes in the fuselage and from over the top and bottom of the mounting holes in the stabilizer. IMPORTANT Don't skip the next procedure. The C/A will harden the surrounding plywood, preventing the threads from stripping when you install the machine screws. ❑ Apply a couple of drops of thin C/A into the stabilizer mounting holes in the fuselage and let it dry completely. ❑ Mount the stabilizer to the fuselage, using the two M3 x 25mm machine screws provided. IMPORTANT Be careful not to overtighten the machine screws or you'll crush the stabilizer. The screws need only be tightened snugly. sTEP 4: hinging the rudder ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the control horn mounting slot in only the left side of the rudder. ❑ Glue the control horn into the mounting slot, making sure that the control horn is facing forward. Page 10 ❑ Cut two hinge slots in the leading edge of the rudder, equally spaced between the top and bottom, then slide the hinges into place, using the same techniques that you did to install the hinges in the elevator. IMPORTANT As with the elevator, make sure to cut the hinge slots on the centerline of the leading edge. ❑ Cut the corresponding hinge slots in the back of the fuselage, then hinge the rudder to the fuselage, using the same techniques that you used to hinge the elevator to the stabilizer. ❑ After allowing the C/A to completely cure, gently pull on the elevator and rudder to check the integrity of the hinges. The hinges should hold securely. If one or more hinges is loose, apply more C/A to the hinge(s). ELEVATOR AND RUDDER CONTROL SYSTEMS INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (2) Carbon Fiber Pushrods (Long) ❑ (2) Heat-Shrink Tubing ❑ (2) Prebent Wires with Z-Bends You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thin C/A ❑ Modeling Knife ❑ # 1 Phillips Head Screwdriver ❑ Electric or Hand Drill with 1/16" (1.6mm) Drill Bit ❑ Wire Cutters ❑ Heat Gun sTEP 1: INSTALLING THE ELEVATOR AND RUDDER SERVOS ❑ Install the elevator and rudder servos into the servo tray, making sure to drill 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter pilot holes for the mounting screws. IMPORTANT Install the servos so that the output shafts are toward the back of the fuselage. +Depending on the size of your servos, you may need to enlarge the servo mounting holes. sTEP 2: INSTALLING THE ELEVATOR linkage assembly ❑ Cut away all but one arm from a servo horn, then attach one pushrod into the outermost hole in the servo arm. Page 11 ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the elevator pushrod exit slot in the right side of the fuselage. ❑ Center the elevator servo (the right-side servo). q Slide the plain end of the pushrod through the fuselage and out the elevator pushrod exit slot, then attach the servo horn to the servo, making sure that it's centered and pointing toward the fuselage side. ☞Don't forget to install the servo horn retaining screw. ❑ With both the elevator and the elevator servo centered, cut off the pushrod right at the front of the control horn. ❑ Slide a piece of heat-shrink tubing over the pushrod, then attach one prebent wire to the outermost hole in the control horn. ❑ Center both the elevator servo and the elevator, then slide the heat-shrink tubing over the wire. ❑ Double-check that both the elevator servo and the elevator are centered, then use a heat gun to shrink the heat-shrink tubing. sTEP 3: INSTALLING THE rudder linkage assembly ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the rudder pushrod exit slot in the left side of the fuselage. ❑ Cut away all but one arm from a servo horn, then attach the remaining pushrod into the outermost hole in the servo arm. ❑ Center the rudder servo, then slide the plain end of the pushrod through the fuselage and out the rudder pushrod exit slot. q Attach the servo horn to the servo, making sure that it's centered and pointing toward the fuselage side. Don't forget to install the servo horn retaining screw. Page 12 ❑ With both the rudder and the rudder servo centered, cut off the pushrod right at the front of the control horn. q Attach the remaining prebent wire into the outermost hole in the control horn, then secure it to the pushrod, using the remaining piece of the heat-shrink tubing. IMPORTANT Remember to double-check that both the rudder and the rudder servo are centered before shrinking the heat-shrink tubing. LANDING GEAR INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (1) Gear Wing ❑ (2) Landing Gear Struts q (2) Main Gear Wheels ❑ (4) Aluminum Brackets (U-Shaped) q (1) Carbon Fiber Axle ❑ (2) Aluminum Brackets (Straight) q (4) Rubber Wheel Retainers ❑ (12) M2 x 8mm Wood Screws You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thin C/A ❑ Electric or Hand Drill ❑ # 1 Phillips Head Screwdriver ❑ 1/16" (1.6mm) Drill Bit ❑ Excel Modeling Knife sTEP 1: INSTALLING THE wheels ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the axle mounting hole in each end of the gear wing. ❑ Slide the carbon fiber axle through the gear wing and center it. q While holding the axle centered, slide one rubber wheel retainer onto each end of the axle and push them up against the ends of the gear wing. ❑ Slide one wheel onto each end of the axle, then slide the remaining rubber wheel retainers onto the axle to hold the wheels in place. IMPORTANT The molded ribs in the wheels should be toward the outside. IMPORTANT After installing the rubber wheel retainers, double-check that both wheels spin freely. Page 13 sTEP 2: INSTALLING THE landing gear struts ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the landing gear strut mounting slots in the top of the gear wing. IMPORTANT The landing gear struts are not the same. One is narrower and one is wider. The narrower strut should be toward the back of the gear wing (A) and the wider strut should be toward the front of the gear wing (B). ❑ Install the landing gear struts into the predrilled holes in the mounting slots. ❑ Secure the landing gear struts to the gear wing using the two straight aluminum brackets and four M2 x 8mm wood screws. Center the brackets over the landing gear struts, then mark and drill 1/16" (1.6mm) pilot holes for the wood screws. PRO TIP Apply a drop of thin C/A into each pilot hole to strengthen the surrounding plywood. sTEP 3: INSTALLING THE gear wing assembly IMPORTANT Pilot holes have been predrilled into the fuselage at the landing gear strut bracket mounting locations. You should be able to see the pilot holes underneath the covering material if you look carefully. After you remove the covering material from over the pilot holes, do as we recommend above and apply a drop of thin C/A to each of the pilot holes to strengthen the surrounding plywood. ❑ Secure the front landing gear strut to the fuselage, making sure that the landing gear strut is centered with the fuselage sides, using two u-shaped aluminum brackets. ❑ Secure the rear landing gear strut to the fuselage, making sure that the landing gear strut is centered with the fuselage sides, using the remaining two u-shaped aluminum brackets. Page 14 sTEP 4: INSTALLING THE landing skid ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the landing skid mounting slot in the bottom of the fuselage. ❑ Glue the landing skid into place, making sure that the mounting tab is flush with the bottom of the fuselage. BOTTOM AND CENTER WING INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (1) Center Wing ❑ (4) M2 x 8mm Wood Screws ❑ (1) Bottom Wing ❑ (1) Center Wing Fairing ❑ (2) Outer Wing Struts (Down) ❑ (4) M3 x 25mm Machine Screws You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thin and Thick C/A ❑ Scissors ❑ # 1 and # 2 Phillips Head Screwdrivers ❑ 220 Grit Sandpaper with Sanding Block ❑ Excel Modeling Knife ❑ Masking Tape sTEP 1: INSTALLING THE bottom wing ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the top and bottom of the wing-screw mounting holes in the bottom wing, then cut away the covering material from over the outer wing strut mounting slots in the top of the wing. ❑ Apply a couple of drops of thin C/A into the bottom wing mounting holes in the fuselage and let it dry completely. ❑ Mount the wing to the fuselage, using the two M3 x 25mm machine screws provided. IMPORTANT Be careful not to overtighten the machine screws. The screws need only be tightened snugly. Page 15 sTEP 2: INSTALLING THE center wing ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the top and bottom of the wing-screw mounting holes in the center wing, then cut away the covering material from over the outer wing strut mounting slots in both the top and the bottom of the wing. ❑ Apply a couple of drops of thin C/A into the center wing mounting holes in the fuselage and let it dry completely. IMPORTANT There are a total of four outer wing struts included. For this step, make sure that you are using the two that are labeled "DOWN". These are for the bottom wing. "DOWN" is lasered on the lower mounting tab. Before installing the two outer wing struts in the next procedure, make sure that you install them so that they are angled forward and that mounting tab with the "DOWN" label is glued into the bottom wing. ❑ Fit and glue the two outer wing struts into the mounting slots in the top of the bottom wing. IMPORTANT Again, make sure that you install the outer wing struts so that they are angled forward and that the mounting tab with the "DOWN" label is glued into the wing. IMPORTANT In the next two procedures, you'll install the center wing. DO NOT glue the outer wing struts to the center wing. If you do, it will be impossible to remove either the bottom wing or the center wing from the fuselage. The outer wing struts fit into the center wing without using glue. ❑ Mount the center wing to the fuselage, using the remaining two M3 x 25mm machine screws. IMPORTANT Be careful not to overtighten the machine screws. The screws need only be tightened snugly. ❑ Gently flex the ends of the bottom wing down, then push the mounting tab in the outer wing struts into the wing strut mounting slots in the bottom of the center wing. ☞Again, do not glue the outer wing struts to the center wing. Page 16 sTEP 3: INSTALLING THE center wing fairing ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the two predrilled center wing fairing mounting screw pilot holes in the leading edge of the wing. ❑ Apply a couple of drops of thin C/A into the pilot holes and let it dry completely. ❑ Secure the front of the center wing fairing to the wing, using two M2 x 8mm wood screws. ❑ If necessary, trim the sides of the cutout in the back of the center wing fairing to fit around the front of the cockpit. ❑ Press the center wing fairing flat against the surface of the wing, then use pieces of masking tape to hold it in place. ❑ Install two M2 x 8mm wood screws to secure the back of the center wing fairing to the wing. Position the hinges at the locations shown. ❑ Cut the corresponding hinge slots in the trailing edge of the wing, then hinge the ailerons to the wing, using the same techniques that you used to hinge the elevator and the rudder. ❑ After allowing the C/A to completely cure, gently pull on the ailerons to check the integrity of the hinges. The hinges should hold securely. If one or more hinges is loose, apply more C/A to the hinge(s). sTEP 2: installing the aileron control horns ❑ Cut away the covering material from over only the bottom of the control horn mounting slot in each aileron. ❑ Glue the control horns into the mounting slots, making sure that the control horns are facing forward. sTEP 3: installing the aileron servos ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the servo lead exit holes in the bottom of the wing, then cut away the covering material from over the servo mounting holes. ❑ Install a servo extension lead onto each of your aileron servos. ❑ Pull the servo leads through the wing from the servo mounting holes and out the servo lead exit holes, then mount your servos into the wing. IMPORTANT Install the servos so that the output shafts are toward the wing tips. Depending on the size of your servos, you may need to enlarge the servo mounting holes. Page 18 sTEP 4: installing the aileron linkage assembly ❑ Install the aileron linkage assemblies, using the same techniques that you used to install the elevator and rudder linkage assemblies. ☞ Notice that the servo arms are mounted toward the middle of the wing, so that the pushrods line up with the control horns. TOP WING INSTALLATION You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (2) Cabane Struts ❑ (4) M2 x 6mm Machine Screws ❑ (2) Outer Wing Struts ❑ (4) M2 Hex Nuts ❑ (2) Aluminum Brackets (90º) ❑ (8) M2 x 8mm Wood Screws ❑ (2) Aluminum Brackets (45º) You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thin and Thick C/A ❑ Needle Nose Pliers ❑ # 1 Phillips Head Screwdriver ❑ Excel Modeling Knife sTEP 1: installing the cabane strut mounting brackets IMPORTANT Pilot holes have been predrilled into the fuselage for the front cabane strut mounting brackets. You should be able to see the pilot holes underneath the covering material if you look carefully. To line up the rear cabane strut mounting brackets, use the pilot holes predrilled in the center wing fairing. B A ❑ Install the two 90º front aluminum cabane strut mounting brackets (A) to the fuselage, using two M2 x 8mm wood screws, then install the two 45º rear aluminum cabane strut mounting brackets (B) to the top of the center wing fairing, using two M2 x 8mm wood screws. IMPORTANT Position the brackets toward the outside of the fuselage and make sure that they're lined up straight. sTEP 2: installing the cabane struts and outer wing struts IMPORTANT Notice that when mounted, the cabane struts should angle in toward the middle of the wing and that the single angle cut (A) on each cabane strut should be toward the trailing edge of the wing. A ❑ Install the right and left cabane struts to the bottom of the wing, using four M2 x 8mm wood screws. Pilot holes have been predrilled to mount the cabane struts, just to the outside of the servo lead exit holes. IMPORTANT Before installing the wood screws, apply a drop of thin C/A to harden the surrounding plywood. Page 19 IMPORTANT Before installing the two outer wing struts in the next procedure, make sure that you install them so that they are angled backward toward the trailing edge and that mounting tab with the "ASCENDING" label is glued into the top wing. ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the outer wing strut mounting slots in the bottom of the wing, then fit and glue the two outer wing struts into the mounting slots. sTEP 3: installing the top wing ❑ Set the wing onto the fuselage and push the mounting tab in the outer wing struts into the wing strut mounting slots in the center wing. IMPORTANT As with the two lower outer wing struts, don't glue the upper outer wing struts to the center wing or it will be impossible to remove the wing if you need to. The outer wing struts fit into the center wing without using glue. ❑ Secure the cabane struts to the front mounting brackets, using two M2 x 6mm machine screws and two M2 hex nuts. IMPORTANT Mount the cabane struts to the outside of the mounting brackets. ❑ Secure the cabane struts to the rear mounting brackets, using two M2 x 6mm machine screws and two M2 hex nuts. IMPORTANT Mount the cabane struts to the outside of the mounting brackets. ❑ Double-check the alignment of the wings. When viewed from the front, all three wings should be level with each other. Check the stabilizer, too. It should be level with the wings. If it's not, loosen the mounting screws and install a thin shim under the low side and retighten the screws. Next, check the wings from the top. They should all be parallel with each other and straight. FINAL ASSEMBLY You'll Need the following parts FROM THE KIT: ❑ (2) Plywood Wing Tip Skids ❑ (1) Decal Set You'll Need the following TOOLS AND SUPPLIES: ❑ Kwik Bond Thick C/A ❑ K&S 30 Watt Soldering Iron ❑ Adjustable Wrench ❑ Solder ❑ Excel Modeling Knife ❑ Heat-Shrink Tubing (Assorted Sizes) ❑ Scissors Page 20 sTEP 1: installing the wing tip skids ❑ Cut away the covering material from over the wing tip skid mounting slots in the bottom of the bottom wing, then fit and glue the two wing tip skids into place. sTEP 2: installing the electronic speed control ❑ Mount your ESC to the fuselage side, directly behind the firewall, using a piece of double-sided foam tape (not included). PRO TIP Depending on the length of your ESCs battery wires, you may want to solder longer wires into place to make it easier to plug in and unplug your battery. ❑ If your ESC features an on/off switch, mount it in a convenient place on the side of the fuselage. sTEP 3: installing the receiver ❑ Join the two aileron servo leads using a Y-harness and push the excess wires up into the wing through the servo lead exit holes. Use a couple of pieces of clear tape (not included) to secure the aileron servo lead to the cabane strut where it enters the cockpit. ❑ Plug the servo and ESC leads into their proper slots in your receiver, then mount your receiver to bottom of the cockpit floor, underneath the servos, using a piece of double-sided foam tape (not included). ❑ Run the antenna out the bottom of the cockpit and secure it along the bottom of the fuselage, using pieces of clear tape (not included). Do not cut the antenna shorter. Allow the excess to hang beyond the back of the fuselage. sTEP 4: installing the battery ❑ To make it easier to install and remove the battery, make a handle out of a length of strapping tape (or other type of strong tape) and firmly adhere it to your battery. ❑ Mount the battery to the fuselage floor, directly behind the firewall, using a piece of hook and loop material (not included). Page 21 BALANCE POINT AND CONTROL THROWS Balance Point: The Center of Gravity (C/G or Balance Point) is 1" (25mm) back from the leading edge of the CENTER wing, measured at the middle of the wing. WARNING Do not balance the airplane further back than recommended or the airplane will be very difficult to control, especially in pitch. An uncontrollable crash could result! CONTROL THROWS: Ailerons: 1/2" (13mm) Up & Down Elevator: 5/8" (15mm) Up & Down Rudder: 3/4" (19mm) Right & Left These control throws are a good starting point. Once you become more familiar with the flight characteristics of the airplane, you can increase the control throws a little bit at a time until you're satisfied with the result. The control throws are measured from the widest point of the control surfaces PREFLIGHT CHECK AND SAFETY Check the operation of the throttle. To do this, do the following: ● A) Plug the flight battery into the ESC and turn on the radio system. WARNING Do not turn the receiver on unless the transmitter is turned on first. Always turn the transmitter on first. Never allow hands or clothing to get in the way of the propeller when the radio is turned on. Sudden unwanted radio signals, or turning the radio on with the throttle stick set at full throttle, can turn the motor on unintentionally. Always make sure that the throttle control stick is set to idle before turning on the transmitter. B) When the throttle control stick is at the idle position, the motor should be off. Moving the stick forward should turn on the motor. Gradually moving the stick to the full forward position should result in the motor running at full power. ☞If you're using a computer radio, you may need to increase your throttle channel's EPA setting to result in full power. (Refer to your radio system's operating guide for further information.) Check the condition of the transmitter batteries. They should be fully charged. ● Check every glue joint in the airplane to ensure that everything is tight and well-bonded. ● Double-check that you've installed and tightened all of the servo horn retaining screws. ● Double-check that the battery is properly secured into place. There's nothing worse than the battery coming loose during flight. ● Double-check the balance of the airplane. Do this with the battery installed and the airplane ready to fly. ● Check the control surfaces. They should all move in the correct direction and not bind. ● If your radio transmitter is equipped with dual rate switches, double-check that they are on the low-rate setting for your first few flights. ● Check to ensure that all of the control surfaces are moving the proper amount in both low and high rate settings. ● ● Check the receiver antenna. It should be fully extended and not coiled up. Do not cut the receiver antenna shorter or the range of your radio control system will be greatly reduced. You should complete a successful range check of your radio equipment prior to each new day of flying, or prior to the first flight of a new or repaired model. ● ● You should not knowingly operate your R/C radio system within 3 miles of a preexisting model club flying field without a frequency sharing agreement with that club.
