Learn to Use Your Serger With Style
I rarely pass up the chance to browse through a specialty shop, always on the look out for trendy styles and
accessories. The same can be said for Barbara Goldkorn, a first-time Sewing With Nancy guest. She’s gleaned
ideas from her browsing, and used her serger to create boutique-style wearables and home decor! What intrigues
me about Barbara’s projects is that they have designer touches that are created by using a serger.

Textured Chic Pillow
This pillow has lots of texture that may look very difficult to create, but with the right combo of serger stitches and
fabric the process is very clever and easy!
Sheer Fun Scarf
Our next Serger Boutique project adds a touch of glamour to your wardrobe with only minutes at your serger. It’s
a Sheer Fun Scarf where a rolled edge and cover stitch team up for sleek, chic results!
Beaded Fabric Accessories
The difference between sewists and non-sewists is that we can easily create our own accessories! Combine beads,
serged fabric strips, and strips of synthetic suede to create Barbara’s necklace and bracelet pair.
Barbara gave me my own beaded set, in my favorite color combo! How did she know? Anyway, I’m wearing it in
this photo and have worn the set many times since!
Girly Girl Sundress
For that little girl who has captured your heart, create a Girly Girl Sundress. Choose two coordinating fabrics, then
incorporate Barbara’s serging techniques to create sundresses that could easily be featured in a trendy boutique!
Woven Fab Finish
Weaving strips of fabric together is nothing new in the sewing world, but adding a fabulous finish to the strips prior
to weaving earns this technique a place of honor in our Serger Boutique mini-series. Coined the Woven Fab
Finish, this technique can be used for home décor, accessories, and wearable art.
Ruffled to a Tee
Begin with a purchased child’s T-shirt and coordinating fabric, then turn that boring tee into a boutique-style dress
using your serger to gather and finish the edges of ruffles. It’s an easy serger project that we called Ruffled to a
Tee.
Vintage Inspired Serging
Our next stop on the Serger Boutique tour is to create a romantic cottage pillow. Vintage inspired, you’ll use your
serger to add ruffles and trim, and to create pintucks, which are the focus of this serger boutique lesson.
Eclectic Serging
Combine a basic 4-thread stitch with an innovative binding and you’ll have an eclectic mix. Barbara’s trendy table
runner showcases unique fabrics and techniques. That’s why we call it Eclectic Serging.
