“This event could not have been
timelier given that the estate has
just been upgraded. The planting
of trees helps complement the
estate’s new look.”
Anna, a Bukit Timah resident
“Traditionally we have tree
planting days in China where
I came from so I’m happy to
see there are such events in
Singapore as well.”
Mr Loh, resident of Block 207
Jurong East St 21.
Leading the GREEN way
More plants for our environment!
A
rmed with shovels, MPs of Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC led their residents and grassroots members to plant trees in their
respective divisions during their annual tree planting events.
The tree planting events were held as part of ‘Clean and Green Singapore’ programme to get the public to be more aware of
and appreciate the need for trees in the environment.
Talk of the Town (TOTT) took a walk around the neighbourhood to get a glimpse of the events.

Sunset Way residents vote ‘yes’ for lift access at every floor
C
ome 2009, Sunset Way residents of Blocks 111, 114 to
116 can look forward to having their lifts stop at every
floor! This project could not have been more timely given
the increasing number of elderly in the vicinity.
“It is crucial that we have lifts on every floor considering
that there are many elderly people,” said Mr Christopher
de Souza, Vice-Chairman of Holland-Bukit Panjang Town
Council, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (Ulu Pandan)
and Adviser to Holland-Bukit Timah GROs during the
‘Town Council-Lift Upgrading Programme’ polling on 26th
January this year.
Residents can use their CPF to
pay for the lift upgrading works
which will commence at the second
quarter of this year. They can either
choose to pay in one lump sum or
over a period of five to ten years.
The project is subsidised by the
government.

COMING HOME TO
CLEMENTI MEADOWS
Clementi Ave 4 residents can now
call their homes Clementi Meadows
after the completion of their Main
Upgrading Programme (MUP)
W
ith the official completion of the MUP on 5th
January, residents of Blocks 301 to 310 Clementi
Ave 4 can now enjoy new facilities in and around
their homes. After a hard day’s work, they can now
come back to their estates and be greeted with new
amenities such as landscaped gardens, fitness corners,
children’s playground and covered linkways.
The void decks of the blocks also received a makeover
with upgraded lift landings, lift lobbies and brand new
anti-litter letterboxes. Each flat is also fitted with new
set of windows, a fireproof main door and modern
bathroom fittings – all of which were part of the MUP
package.
Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (Bukit Timah) and
Adviser to Holland-Bukit Timah GROs toured the rejuvenated blocks.

ESTATES IN SINGAPORE S
The search for the cleanest estate in Singapore is back!
O
n 29th October 2007, the ‘Island-wide Cleanest Estate Competition’ (ICEC) was
officially launched by Dr Teo Ho Pin, Coordinating Chairman of 14 PAP Town
Councils, Chairman of Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council and MP for Bukit Panjang
Constituency.
This annual competition aims to instil a sense of pride in everyone, from the
conservancy workers to the residents, and encourage them to take charge of
cleanliness around their neighbourhoods.
“The desired outcome is to create a culture where residents come together to take
ownership and responsibility of their estates,” said Dr Teo Ho Pin in his opening
speech at the launch.
After the conference, Dr Teo and the media proceeded to visit a few of the nominated
locations where the judges were conducting spot checks. Based on a scoresheet,
the judges gave and deducted points on areas such as general cleanliness and the
obstruction of corridor passageways.

HELLO
SAY
to our 2nd Community Garden in Bukit Panjang
Dr Teo launched the 2nd Community Garden in Bukit Panjang.
D
r Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West CDC
and MP for Bukit Panjang Constituency
launched the second community garden in
Bukit Panjang on 1st December 2007 near
Block 273 Bangkit Road.
He was welcomed by residents who had their
hands full - picking the latest produce of the
day such as chillies, long beans, lady’s fingers,
melons and more. Some of the residents
were also seen hard at work clearing the
weeds from the vegetable plots nearby.
APPLE TREES
IN YOUR TOWN?
As you stroll along Jelapang Rd and Toh Yi
Drive, don’t be surprised if you stumble upon
an apple tree – not just any apple tree but
the STAR Apple tree! So what’s the difference
between ordinary apples and star apples?
F
or a start, do you know that this self-fertilising tree has its
roots all the way from the Caribbean and it can grow up to
30metres tall?! The tree, also known as Chrysophyllum Cainito,
starts bearing fruits only when it reaches the age of seven.
So look out for its shiny, round fruits that ripens to deep
purplish or light golden-green! If it’s just green – that means
it’s unripe! Best of all, the pulps of these star apples can
be made into delicious desserts such as jellies and salads.
However, only their white, juicy pulps can be eaten as their
rinds are NOT edible!
12 I Holland - Bukit Panjang Town Council
The Star Apple Tree or Chrysophyllum Cainito
can be found at Block 115 Jelapang Rd and
Block 1 Toh Yi Drive
With tree-planting days and recycling events being held regularly,
residents too can also do their bid in protecting the environment by
recycling their unwanted things.
However, not all things can be recycled. Here are some tips on proper recycling:
You Can’t Recycle
You Can Think Twice Before Throwing
•
•
•
•
• Containers
• Electrical items (which can also be
recycled if they are not too bulky e.g
television sets, desktop printers and
computers. You can call the Town
Council for the removal of bulky items
and electrical items which are beyond
repair.)
• Furnitures, old clothes and stuffed toys
which can be donated to collection
centres such as the Salvation Army
Styrofoam
Broken glass and light bulbs
Tissues and toilet papers
Food wrappers
But You Can
• Buy only what you need
• Opt for electronic bills instead
of hard copies
Look out for these recycling stations right in your neighbourhood!

HAVE YOUR BULKY
ITEMS REMOVED!
On 10th December 2007, The Strait Times reported on the Dover Road’s fire which
resulted in the evacuation of the entire block. The fire was caused by a lighted
match being set to unwanted items that were left at the lift landing. Fortunately,
there were no serious casualties. However, you may not be as lucky if this were to
happen in your block.
Help protect your family and neighbours by doing your part in keeping the
common areas clean and free from obstruction.
Bulky items that are not discarded the proper way may:
• Become FIRE HAZARDS and block fire escape routes
• Become potential accident zones
• Become a potential breeding ground for pests
• Cause obstruction and inconvenience to others.
