Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Celebrates NATIONAL DAY It was an explosion of red at the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC National Day Observance Ceremony, held on 6 August 2006. T he weather was perfect as residents arrived decked out in red, a symbolic support for the continued prosperity of Singapore. Beginning from five locations, residents were all hyped up and waved the national flag as they brisk walked to the final point near the stage, led by their respective MPs. There, they were treated to a series of exciting performances, beginning with the Chinese drums display. Other events that were especially interesting include the Malay and Bhangra dances, a wushu display, as well as a couple of modern dance items. However what caught the residents by surprise was the unexpected swooping down of model planes in what the emcees coined, “our very own miniature fly-past”. Mr Paul Ng, a Bukit Timah resident was all praise. He says, ” The wushu performers are young but so skilful. The Malay and Bhangra dances are good because they expose us to the other cultures in Singapore. I am also pleasantly surprised by the model planes.” With the atmosphere reaching a climax, the Hwa Chong Junior College Choir took the stage and crooned to a spellbound audience. Not to be outdone, the Members of Parliment rose to the challenge and delighted their wards by following up with a quartet. The next segment saw performers returning to the stage for renditions of past National Day theme songs, which was followed by the taking of the pledge and singing of the anthem. And from the expressions on everyone’s faces, you know that the national spirit is alive and well among this crowd, both young and old. 02 I Holland - Bukit Panjang Town Council Rise&shine Bukit Panjang residents celebrate the National Day Observance Ceremony in a healthy way O ver at Bukit Panjang, residents, young and old, woke up to an early start and gathered at Bukit Panjang Community Club to celebrate the National Day Observance Ceremony with a morning exercise. Led by Dr Teo Ho Pin, MP for Bukit Panjang Constituency, residents sang the National Anthem and recited the National Pledge with gusto, followed by a round of light exercise. The residents then brisk walked along the nature trail of Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood Park 2 before heading back to the community club for the birthday cake-cutting. All geared up and ready to go! talk of the town I 03 Upgrading Lifts, Improving Lives A resounding over 90% ‘Yes’ votes for the Town Council Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP) in Bukit Panjang R esidents of Block 409 to Block 418 Sanjana/ Fajar Road and Block 234 to Block 244 Bukit Panjang Ring Road voted for the Lift Upgrading Programme in their estates. Over 90% of the residents voted ‘Yes’ for the LUP in their estates. The Guest-of-Honour, Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, MP for Bukit Panjang Constituency and Adviser to Bukit Panjang Grassroots Organizations mingled with the residents and addressed their concerns before officially launching the LUP polling. Dr Teo told residents that the LUP is primarily targeted at improving the lives of the elderly and those who have mobility problems. He informed the residents that some of the blocks were selected for the Town Council’s LUP. The rest of the blocks would be under the HDB’s LUP. Dr Teo assured residents that the Government and the Town Council would be subsidizing the costs of the programme such that residents only need to pay about 5 to 12.5% of the total costs. He informed the residents that they could pay for the LUP through either cash or CPF, and that instalment plans were also available. Mr Said Iziddin voted for the LUP even though he stays on the 2nd storey. He said, “I have aged parents staying with me, so having the lift stop at my level would be a great convenience.” Construction work in LUP will commence by year 2007. 04 I Holland - Bukit Panjang Town Council A Brand New Road in town!
