The Club has some fun things planned this
month. On October 19 we will tour Shirley
Plantation, with a lunch stop at the Dockside
Restaurant. This is the same tour we had
planned for last month, but rescheduled so
that more people could attend.
Then the next day, October 20 the Club has been invited to the
house of Hugh & Mary Penn Hawthorne. If you’ve never been
you’ll be in for a real treat and if you’ve already been its even better!
Also, we have coming up on October 27 our Annual Steak Fry at
Peter & Sharon Francisco’s Farmers’ Market.
Details on all three of the October events are elsewhere in the Gas
Light.
Now we are coming up on the end of the year. So, that means
that annual dues are soon to be due to AACA National and to the
Richmond Region (I’ll keep reminding).
Also, to anyone that won an annual award last year at the Banquet, We need those trophies back so we can present them at the
next banquet.
Also, a friendly reminder to everyone. There is no Monthly Business Meeting in October!
So, as you put your mowers away, don’t put away your cars because we are going to have more Fun Runs all the way through
December.
See you Soon,
Budd

Memories
Since his passing Bob Baker has been missed by all that
knew him. It is a real treat that the Baker family is
sharing this document written by Bob some 39 years
ago.
Internal combustion water cooled engine:
The idea is to install an electro-magnetic clutch on
the drive pulley of the water pump. This clutch
would be similar to those used on present day auto
air conditioner compressors. This clutch would be
controlled by a thermal switch that would keep the
clutch open and the water pump inoperative until
the engine reaches it’s most efficient operating temperature. A mechanical thru-pin or similar device
would be also provided to allow operation in case of
electrical clutch failure. This clutch would be used in
addition to the present thermo mechanical thermostat and heat riser.
Since air conditioned cars have an oversized radiator
to accommodate the added load on the engine when
the air conditioner is used, this extra radiator capacity has an adverse effect during the winter driving. The proposed water pump clutch would greatly
reduce the time required to bring the engine to it’s
best and most efficient operating temperature. This
would save fuel and reduce sludge and acids usually
caused by low temperature driving.
Bob Baker’s Invention
(Handwritten by Bob Baker in 1974)
During the present fuel crisis and with prices of .57 per
gallon for regular gasoline common, a more efficient
engine would be very desirable. I have the following
idea or proposal to improve the efficiency of any

Shirley dates back to 1613 and is known as the
first plantation. Established in 1638 the family
business is the Nation’s oldest family-owned
business. The home is still lived in by descendents of the same family since 1738. Shirley has
been recognized as the most intact Colonial estate in Virginia.

Please keep this in mind when you select which
car you will be driving to Shirley.

Clark.

Scouts Travel to Virginia Beach
On September 21 & 22 Cole & Clay Fuhrman accompanied their Dad, Andy and the rest of Boy
Scout Troup 736 to Virginia Beach airport for a
weekend of camping. While there the scouts did
work to qualify for some Merit Badges. one being
for Automotive Maintenance. Andy enlisted the
help of Bob Stein and other TRACCA members for
some help.
Each owner reviewed the Maintenance Requirements for their respective car.
Many thanks to the TRACCA. They with their
innovative Automotive Maintenance Presentation made the day for the Scouts and their
Scoutmaster.
Cole and Clay have been actively growing up
in the AACA so the “car stuff” is second nature
to them.. They were pleased to share some of
the “car stuff” with their friends and fellow
Scouts.
The “car stuff” memories that come attached to
those Merit Badges will last a lifetime!
The Tidewater group assembled a special display
of Automobiles that represented a wide range of
design and engineering .
Debbie Nolan’s Black 1969 VW Beatle
Wins “Best in Show”
Sam Kern brought his 1925 Franklin, Susan &
Terry Bond brought their 1948 MG TC, Al Swanson brought his 1967 Mustang, Neil Sugarmeyer
brought his 1928 Willys-Knight. Bob Stein’s 1937
Pontiac completed the display.
The Tidewater Region’s 40th Annual Meet was
a major success. Over 300 cars were entered,
they had the most flea market vendors ever,
and they had highest number of cars ever in the
Car coral the most cars ever entered in the car
corral, and record attendance.
The VW has had a great year!
It also got its AACA National
Junior, Senior & its First Preservation Awards and has won
first place in its class at both
Bug Out shows in May &
Sept. The Bug Outs are exclusively for VW vehicles and
each show had 200-300 cars in attendance.

Classic Automobile Parade and Display Organized by Bruce Woodson, Jr.
Bruce Woodson, Jr. organized a fantastic
display of cars at Parham Healthcare and
Rehab. Many of the participants were
members of the Central Virginia British
Car Club. Several Richmond Region
members and others also participated.
1972 MGB
1973 MGB
1974 Triumph TR6
1975 Jensen-Healey
1985 Ferrari 308
1989 Rolls Royce Silver Corniche
The idea was to make an ordinary day
special for those who have precious few
remaining.
Richmond Region Members taking part in this
event were Bruce, Carol & Virginia Woodson,
Morris Cameron, Budd Lacy, Wyatt Williams &
Dick Ivey.
At approximately 6 PM on Tuesday September 24th, Twenty Car Enthusiasts in
18 cars assembled in the parking lot behind the facility.
The cars were staged by model year and
at approximately 6 PM, the group paraded around the building, blowing horns
and waving for all the non-mobile patients watching from the windows.
When the cars got around the building a
special presentation of the cars was made
to those that could come outside.
Bruce mentioned that as they were making their way around the building, he noticed that very few of the non-mobile patients were at the windows watching. It
was when the group made the final turn
he realized why. People that had not left
their beds in quite some time had asked
for permission to come outside for the
presentation!
The Display of Cars consisted of:
1922 Ford Model T
1930 Ford Model A Sedan
1937 Cord 812 Phaeton
1940 Packard 110 Sedan
1949 Dodge Coronet
1953 Ford Victoria Conv.
1954 Jaguar XK120-SE OTS

Alice Cameron & Budd Lacy manned the Richmond Region Club Tent at the 2013 Classics On
The Green.
Alice & Morris Cameron’s Cross-Country Ford
Model T was proudly displayed in the tent (See
cover Photo). It attracted many people to the
Club Tent throughout the day.
Complimentary copies of
AACA’s Magazine Antique
Automobile (courtesy of
AACA National) and copies

Feature:
Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival & Vintage
Grand Prix Race Weekend
By Greg Glassner
Antique auto enthusiasts who desire a taste
of vintage sports car racing might want to
schedule a visit to Upstate New York’s annual Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival and
SVRA U.S. Vintage Grand Prix weekend.
These are actually two separate events that
exist in harmony. The Festival takes place
on a Friday in the village of Watkins Glen.
The Vintage Grand Prix is a three-day event
at the modern Watkins Glen racetrack a few
miles uphill from the town.
If you do this event in the future, do not arrive on Saturday. Friday’s Festival in the
Village of Watkins Glen is not to be
and Chevron trundle through town is still a
hoot.
The entire downtown area is basically a floating car show on Friday, with Jaguar XKEs,
Morgans, Porsche 911s, Panteras, and Corvettes nosed into the curbs while their owners
kick tires and check out each other’s rides.
With the exception of Chevrolet Corvettes
and Trans-Am racing versions of Chevy
Camaros, Ford Mustangs, and Plymouth Baracudas, most of the cars on track and many of
those scattered about the Village on Friday are
foreign cars. Fans of American Iron who appreciate automotive history will not be disappointed. For instance, where else are you going to see a Marmon 16, across from a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe which
sits next to a Bentley Continental?
Other rarities I spotted were a tiny British
Berkeley, a Jowett Jupiter, a Siata 8V, and
skipped. It is a free day-long celebration of
American sports car racing history which
began on the roads around Watkins Glen in
1948.
Friday’s festivities include a Concours
d’Elegance, sports car wine tours, a gymkhana, and a lecture series in the park.
Franklin Street is closed to traffic in the afternoon and the vintage racers drive down
from the track for display. Late in the day
they take two laps around the original 6.6
mile road circuit, which runs through the
village.
These tours and ceremonial laps are conducted with a police escort, but watching a
Porsche 917, two dozen Trans Am cars, and
assorted other Porsches, Alfa Romeos,
MGs, Triumphs and the odd Siata, Echidna,
the Hansgen Jaguar Special that won at the
Glen in 1953.
12
At the track on Saturday, a show-what-youbrung car show is staged on the infield and
the paddock is wide open for spectators. Vintage racing is a hobby, not a vocation, and
the owners of these cars are proud of their
rides and quite willing to tell you all about
them. A familiar sight at many vintage car
races is Peter Giddings, who races a very rare
Alfa Romeo Tipo B P-3 Grand Prix race car.
This car was campaigned by Scuderia Ferrari
in the 1930s with drivers such as Tazio
Nuvrolari, Rudolph Caracciola and Achille
Varzi. Giddings must have a very understanding insurance agent to race this priceless antique.
Another interesting facet of vintage car
events is that drivers often bring a few extra
cars from their stables for display in the paddock and garages. A surprising number of
them are being offered for sale in order to
finance other car projects. All are beyond my
budget, I am afraid.
A number of vintage motorcycles are also
around the infield and I came perilously
close to buying a Gina Scrambler, which was
built in Argentina for only one year. It was
small enough to stuff into my SUV and cart
home and the price was right. If I had closed
the deal I’d be the only one in Virginia with
a Gina - quite possibly the only one in the
Northern Hemisphere.
One of the great things about this annual
event in Watkins Glen is that you do not
have to be a die-hard car nut to enjoy it. Food
and beer vendors line Franklin Street on Friday, vendors of car gear and art abound, and
the gorge and waterfall in the state park are
worth a tour, as are the many nearby wineries.
After the races, stop by the old Seneca Lodge
for a cool one or dinner. This was a hangout
for F-1 and Can-Am drivers and mechanics
in the 60s and 70s and much memorabilia
crowds the walls behind the bar.

Richmond Region.
