Meet the Captains
Facilities & Grounds Improvements
Following elections last November conducted by the Australian
Electoral Commission together with the Student Representative
Council, our School Captains and Vice Captains for 2013 were presented to the school community at the whole school assembly on
Friday 15 February.
Landscaping
You may have noticed the changes to the front of the school
over the last few months, and particularly in the last two weeks as
the turf has been laid. It looks so green!
Congratulations to Captains, Johnny Radas and Mariah Magri, and
to Vice Captains, Kushani Hewage and Victoria Obieglo. They will
be excellent student representatives and ambassadors for the
school.
The landscaping should be finished in the next few weeks and
will provide a lovely, shaded passive recreation area for students.
We have also installed water systems to support the planting
being done in garden beds around the school.
Johnny and Mariah’s first official duty was to welcome the new Year
7’s to the school, and to place a piece of writing done by each of
them into a time capsule to be opened when these Year 7’s are in
Year 12.
The newly elected Year 7 Class Captains and Vice Captains were
also introduced to the school and presented with their badges.
Congratulations to all our student leaders on being chosen for this
important role. We look forward to working with you throughout the
year. Thank you to Ms Meaghan Hocking for her leadership in this
area.
Captains: Johnny Radas & Mariah Magri
Vice Captains: Kushani Hewage & Victoria Obieglo
Brimbank Young Citizen of the Year - Honorable Mention
Congratulations, Mariah Magri
Mariah Magri, of Year 12, has been recognised with an Honorable
Mention in Brimbank City Council’s Young Citizen of the Year awards
as part of this year’s Australia Day celebrations.
New classrooms
Other projects undertaken over the holidays have included the
refurbishment of three old Science classrooms to create a dedicated Year 7 homeroom area, a locker bay, and several offices.
It has made such a difference to the space and quality of
rooms for the Year 7 students and staff. As well as this, almost all
of our classrooms, lockers, & corridors were repainted over the
summer, so everything looks very fresh and clean.
Mariah was nominated for her contribution to the community, in
particular, her work with the Brimbank Youth Forum &, Sunshine Youth
Safety Forum to ensure that young people’s needs are identified &
addressed at local council level. She has been a guest speaker at
council events & has supported her peers through Brimbank Youth
Services. Mariah’s contribution to the school community is also outstanding and she will continue this, fittingly, as School Captain this
year.
On behalf of all of the school community, congratulations to Mariah
on this excellent recognition of her leadership skills & humanitarian
work.
School Council Elections
We have 7 parent representatives on our School Council, with 3 of
these positions up for election this year.
Year 12 Common Room Blitz
A group of Year 12 students, under the direction of the Captains
& Vice Captains, has renovated the Year 12 Common Room.
They cleaned and repainted the room, and are waiting for the
rest of their new furniture to arrive. Well done to everyone involved.
Any parent of a child enrolled at the school is eligible to stand for
election as a parent member. Parents on school councils provide
important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape
the direction f the school and contribute to its success, and to that
of each student.
Nominations open on Monday 18 February and close on Monday
25 February at 4.00pm. An information package was posted out
on Monday 18 February. Council meets twice per term on a
Wednesday evening at 7.00pm.
If you would like to know more about being a member of School
Council, please feel free to contact me.

College Expectations – Punctuality, Attendance, Uniform
Some Safety Issues
We greatly appreciate the support we receive from parents to
make sure that your child attends school regularly & punctually, is
in full uniform, and is well prepared for all classes with books and
equipment.
School Car Park
Some important expectations are outlined below:
Being prepared for classes
It is expected that students have the required books & equipment
for each subject, as well as a student diary to record homework &
assignments.
If you need any assistance with ordering books, please contact
the General Office.
With our increased enrolment and the extra number of students
being dropped off at the school in the morning, I would like to
reinforce some important safety rules.
Parents should not enter the car park to drop off their children.
Please only use the parking bays on Main Rd East for the drop off.
It is dangerous having cars entering and leaving the car park as
large numbers of students are arriving at school.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Punctuality
Please ensure all parking regulations are followed. This includes
double parking to drop off and pick up students in front of the
school.
The consequences for lateness to school are as follows:
1st Late
Coordinator Interview with student
2nd Late
After School Detention 3.15pm - 3.45pm
3rd Late
After School Detention 3.15pm - 3.45pm
4th Late
Plus Friday detention 3.20pm - 5.20pm
(to be held during the term)
Further Lateness Parent Interview, Student Support Group
established and/or suspension
Pedestrian Crossings
Attendance
Bike Helmets
Is expected at the start of each day & for all classes. Any student
who is late more than 4 times will have a Friday detention from
3.20pm to 5.20pm. The first Friday detention will be held on Friday 22 February.
Students must have a minimum of 90% attendance in all classes
at each year level.
Please speak to your children and encourage them to use only the 2 designated pedestrian crossings to cross Main Rd East. In
the mornings there is a huge amount of traffic outside the
school, and it is very dangerous if students try to cross the road in
an unsupervised area.
All student's who ride their bike to school MUST wear a helmet. This
is the law, and we will be speaking to students who do not comply.
Uniform
Full uniform must be worn to and from school, at school and on
all school excursions, including interschool sports.
Please note:
 Only the 3 approved styles of school shoes are to be worn
 PE / Sports shoes must be lace up runners with non-marking
soles
 Facial piercings are not to be worn at school
 Make-up is to be kept to a minimum.
Student Accident Insurance Arrangements
Parents are reminded the school does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students,
including any transport costs.
Copies of our policies in relation to these areas are in the Welcome letter that has been posted out on Monday 18 February.
The school cannot advise parents/guardians on whether to purchase a student accident policy or which policy to purchase. It
is recommended that parents seek assistance in this matter with
their insurance broker or find a suitable personal accident insurer
in the Yellow Pages or online.
And finally……
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact me or the General Office on 9366 2555.
Thank you for all you have done as parents to contribute to the
very positive start we have had to the year so far.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns or questions about how your daughter or son is going at the
school.
Craig Jennings
Assistant Principal
I look forward to working with you this year.

What’s been happening at SASC
New Teachers & Staff at St Albans Secondary College
I studied a Bachelor of Science and Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Melbourne. I worked at Keilor Downs College in 2012. I did my placement as a student teacher at SASC in 2009.
I am currently teaching Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 Mathematics
and Year 11 Maths Methods at SASC.
I like to play badminton, listen to music and catch up with friends.
I also like to travel around!
Kristy Le
Mathematics Teacher
I recently graduated from University. I am passionate about reading and learning other languages.
My hobbies are drawing & painting.
Caroline Tran
English Teacher
Ms Kristy Le, Ms Caroline Tran, Mr Owen McIntyre and Ms Clare Younis
I graduated from Victoria University after completing a Diploma of Education last year (2012). This is the first school I have taught at
since graduating and after only 2 weeks I have developed substantially as a teacher. I am both a Maths and PE teacher this year
at SASC, teaching two Year 9 Maths classes, a Year 10A Maths, a Year 11 Maths Methods class and a Year 8 PE class.
In my free time I like to remain quite active playing football (Aussie Rules), running, swimming, golf and cricket. I also like my
'extreme sports', which include snowboarding, surfing and wakeboarding.
Owen McIntyre
Mathematics Teacher
Since graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2007, I have worked as a theatrical producer, a musician and a teacher of Art
and Literacy.
I am delighted to be teaching ESP, LSE and Art at St Albans Secondary College.
I love reading, baking, creating art and I am about to finish recording my first album of original music.
Clare Younis
Art & English Teacher
I joined the staff at St Albans SC as Senior Sub-School Leader. As a long-term resident of the Brimbank area, I have knowledge of
the community and extensive experience working with parents and school communities from a variety of English and non-English
speaking backgrounds.
I have had many years’ experience as a Leading Teacher in several schools, and have focussed on Senior
School for the past ten years. I have a strong academic background including a Master Degree in School
Leadership with first class honours, qualifications to teach English, English as a Second Language, Music
and Mathematics, and extensive teaching experience across all of these subjects in the Middle and Later
Years. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught in all eight Key Learning Areas, also VCE, VCAL and
VET, and have experience in curriculum design, implementation and review at school, regional and national levels. I have also led teams of teachers in the design, implementation and review of pastoral care
programs across several schools, and am experienced in using data to evaluate programs and reflect
upon appropriate change as a result.
I join our staff with enthusiasm and the desire to provide students with life-changing opportunities.

New Teachers & Staff at St Albans Secondary College Continued
I have recently completed a Certificate III in Education Support and am excited to be working within
the Individual Needs Department here at St Albans Secondary College.
I believe this year will be full of wonder and opportunity for both students and staff and look forward to
sharing the journey ahead with the wider school community.
Outside of school, I always carry a book with me wherever I go, I play tennis but not very well and
every now and then I manage to paint a picture or two. Let's all have a great year".
Darryn Cutting
Teacher Aide
I initially worked at MacKillop Family Services in Geelong for 5 years working with youth
who were living in out of home care. I then travelled to London and lived there for
just over 2 and a half years. I worked in the Looked After Children's Team in two boroughs. This involved working with children in out of home care and working within the
court system.
Upon coming back to Australia I briefly worked as a locum before starting my role
here in the Wellbeing Team.
Erin Van Elst
Wellbeing
I first started in schools in ‘01 when I picked up an IT traineeship. I then moved to Williamstown High School in ‘04 where I worked as IT Network Manager. In ‘08 I went to
NMIT Epping campus and studied undergrad Aquaculture F/T. After a brief stint in the
Aquaculture industry I decided to return to my passion of Networking.
I’m a water sport kind of guy. I can frequently be found in a canoe on the Maribyrnong or in The Bay, sailing my 14’ boat, or surfing when I find myself near some
waves.
Tristran Chipchase
IT Manager
Hi my name is Nermina. In 2012 I worked as an Integration Aide at Parkwood Green
Primary School. However, my background is Secretarial/Admin. I look forward to my

Our International students settled down well in the year of the
Snake 2013. We helped them with pre-departure preparation,
transition from language centre to mainstream classes, settling
into a new environment and moving into Tertiary Studies. For
academic and language support, we have Foundation English
Classes and an after school program to assist VCE international
students to consolidate their language skills. We also encourage them to undertake a VCE language in their first language

News from our Sub Schools....Con’t
St Albans Secondary College, Main Road East, St Albans 3021
Alba News: Issue 1, February 2013
Middle School Report
Welcome back to everyone. In particular I would like to welcome all our new students and also Nermina Fetahovic who is working as
the subschool assistant in the middle school. We have had a very smooth start to the year and all coordinators are thrilled with the
positive attitude the middle school students have shown so far. It is important at this time of the year to establish routines in terms of
diary use and homework. It would also be helpful if parents and guardians checked diaries to see what work is being given. Students in
the middle school should be completing up to two hours per night. If they don’t have specific homework students should be revising
class notes or reading a book.
Coming Events
In Week 7 all Year 9 students will be visiting Williamstown Beach with their Humanities teacher as part of their coastal studies. Also, during
this week we will be holding a Cyber Safety Information Session which will be presented by the Australian and Communication Media
Authority.
On Monday the 25th of February all Year 9 students will be sitting the General Achievement Test. This is a very useful tool in assessing
performance across a range of areas. Notices have been sent home regarding this test.
Netbooks for Year 9 students will be distributed next Wednesday 20 February and on Monday 25 February. Letters will be distributed
regarding the process for this. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the distribution.
Year 10 students can look forward to upcoming events planned by our 4 successful Beacon Ambassadors. Congratulations to the following students who have been chosen as our ambassadors: Hoa Nguyen, Brigitte Thomas, Joshua Aghan, Anna Hijazeen. We had
several applications this year and students who have not been appointed as ambassadors will be given the opportunity to meet as a
committee when we are organising major events.

Senior School Report
I would like to take the opportunity to make a special welcome
to the parents of Year 11 & 12 students who are new to the Senior School, and to say that the 2013 school year has taken off to
a great start. So many students are already showing excellent
promise with the timely completion of the holiday homework, set
for all classes during the Orientation Program in 2012. There has
been an impressive commitment from students and staff to get
right down to business, setting the tone for a solid year’s work.
The Year 12 Study Camp was held on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th
of February at University College on the grounds of the University
of Melbourne, Parkville. VCE and VCAL students experienced a
variety of presentations from some pre-eminent speakers, including the best-selling Australian author Archie Fusillo, Greg
Young of Youth Now, Fabiana Grasso of VECCI, and Karen Ford
VCE English expert. Our own MIPs team presented a highly informative lecture on the pathways taken by the 2012 Year 12
students and the options for further study once students complete VCE and VCAL. Information provided included an outline
of the university pre-results selection options - “PPP” and “SNAP”
programs - and the various scholarships available, for which our
students can apply.
We have a very active and committed group of students working in our SRC this year. The School Captains Mariah and Johnny
along with Vice Captains Victoria and Kushani, have led the
highly popular upgrade of the Year 12 Common Room. The
Common Room facilities have been painted and new furniture
will be arriving later in Term 1. It is evident already that this is a
very significant space for our senior students, and many are taking great pride in maintaining this facility in its pleasant and orderly state.
We have a number of events planned for the year to motivate
and engage the imagination of our senior students. Term 1
would not be complete without the “VCE/Staff Soccer Challenge” in Week 9. In Term 2 we will have an assembly to celebrate “100 days of VCE/VCAL success”, with speakers including
our alumni students sharing their successes. Our “Whole New
World” assembly will be addressed by the ever-popular Sonja
Carras.
Sonja’s thought provoking presentation, which focuses on teenagers
staying safe while partying, is always received with enthusiasm by students and staff alike. Later in the year the Senior Sub-School Team
plans to invite an Olympic swimmer to speak to the Year 11s, while the
Year 12s will have a Motivational Pizza lunch. Driver Education is always an important issue for both students and parents, and with this in
mind we plan to have the “Fit to Drive” Road Safety Program for Year
11 students and the RACV “Spin Chat” Avoiding Risk Program for the
Year 12s.
Additionally in 2013, Study Skills programs for both Year 11 & 12 students will be provided. The “Stretch Program” will be running again
this year, and a selection of Year 11 students will be required to attend. Letters to advise of participation in this program will be sent
home and parent signatures will be required. Stretch focuses on
Study Skills, Time Management and Organisation. The Year 11 and 12
“High Achievers Study Groups” will also run this year. The Year 12
group was established last year and students involved meet and study
together regularly. The Year 11 group will be set up shortly and a
meeting will be held to consolidate this group. In Year 12 a “Peer
Coaching Program” will run - where some of our higher achieving students will work with groups of their peers - to accelerate learning for all
members of the group, and a teacher will oversee their work.
In the background, throughout the year, we will conduct our Case
Management Initiative to ensure that the attendance, achievement
and individual needs of all our students are monitored closely. Interim
Reports to parents of Year 12 students will now have a new section
entitled “Achievement”, to allow teachers to indicate the level of
achievement. Through these Interim Reports, we hope to provide effective intervention and support as required. The reports at the end of
Semester 1 will also include this new “Achievement” section. Mid-year
Exams in 2013 will be running for all Year 12 students during the Term 2
holidays.
I look forward to a fast-paced year in the Senior Sub-School and hope
to meet many parents of our senior students as the year progresses.
Please contact us on 9366 2555 if you have any queries or concerns
about the progress of your child.

As parents, we are only too aware of the risks the internet poses to our children. The ability to communicate with their peers
in such an instantaneous environment can at times be useful,
but also damaging in some ways. So St Albans Secondary
College would like to give our parents the opportunity to attend this informative event and assist you in securing your
family.
Name of Parent/Guardian:
Our presenter is from Australian Communication & Media
Authority. The evening will run for approximately 1 and a half
hours with plenty of time for you to ask questions and raise
any concerns you are having with your children and their use
of the internet.

All those interested parents who wish to attend are asked to
return the RSVP slip to the General Office so we can endeavour to accommodate everyone.

Education Maintenance Allowance in 2013
The EMA is being restructured to increase the focus on direct support to parents.
The changes to the EMA starting in 2013 include:

The School Start Bonus will be discontinued.

EMA payments to parents increased from:
 $117.50 to $200 for parents of eligible Prep students

 $235 to $300 for parents of eligible Year 7 students
 $235 to $250 for parents of all other eligible secondary school students up to the age of 16.

School-based EMA payments will be discontinued ($117.50 per primary school student; $235.00 per secondary school
student).
The discontinuation of the schools' component of the EMA will be partially offset by the redirection of equity based funding to some
schools. These payments will be directed to schools with higher proportions of students from a lower socio-economic background, in
recognition of the additional challenges faced in supporting these students to reach their potential. Further information about these
changes will be provided directly to schools.
