Description of the Records
The material to be filmed consists of the papers of the Astronomers Royal
kept at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, Herstmonceux Castle, which has been
designated a place of deposit for these Public Records . The first part of the
project' concerns the records of Flamsteed, Halley and Bradley and covers the
period 1671 to 1765, including a small portion of the records of Bliss . The
project will be continued at a later date to include the remainder of Bliss's
records, and those of Nevil Maskelyne (1765-1811), John Pond (1811-1835), and George
Biddell Airy (1835-1881) . The Board of Longitude papers have already been filmed .
The records are sufficiently complete to be representative of the work of
the Royal Observatory from its foundation in 1675 by King Charles II . The

papers . There are 13 volumes of his papers .
3. James Bradley (1742-1762)
The most important part of Bradley's papers are his observation books
(of the quadrants, transit telescope and zenith sector), and star catalogues .
Almost no correspondence survives . . The 46 volumes of his papers include
a very small amount of the work of his successor NATHANIEL BLISS (1762-1764) .
