I'm sure I have left out many things that I do on a regular basis for our parishes and for the Diocese, but I'm sure you've got the gist of it now! Dear friends, It is hard to predict, in mid December, what will be happening in our lives by the time this gets to you - shall we I would like to remind you that we have 8 trained Elders in the Benefice, whose 'job' it is to visit the housebound and take them Holy Communion if they wish. With a combined population of about 2,000 in our parishes, it is impossible for me to visit everyone as often as they or I might wish, so please forgive me if I have not been to see you. If you would like to be visited, maybe just to have a chat because you are lonely, please remember to turn to your nearest Elder as a first resort; they will let me know if you would particularly like to see me. I know this will be a change for some of you who may have lived in a time when every village had its own parish priest and their administration was done by their wives! Regrettably, as priests are given more and more parishes to look after, they will have less and less time to devote to every individual in those parishes; that is why our Elders are such a valuable resource, so please do use them they are wonderful people who have a real calling to this role. have had a white Christmas? Shall we have made the kind of New Year resolutions that we can actually stick to this time around?! Whatever has happened in your life in the last month, I hope you know that I shall have been praying for all of you over the holiday season. I am often asked what I do with my time, as people seem to persist in thinking that parish priests do nothing all week and only come out of hiding on Sundays. That may have been the case in the olden days, but it certainly hasn't been true for many years now. I have to spend a great deal of time on administration and going to numerous meetings, both in the parishes, and in the Deanery and Diocese. Each of our 4 parishes has its own PCC, each of which meets 4 times a year, and those meetings have to be prepared for as well as attended and then followed up. Then of course I have to prepare two sermons each week for our Sunday services; I meet up regularly with couples wanting to get married and then preside over their weddings (not always on a Saturday); I spend time with parents wanting their children to be baptized; I meet with the families of those who have recently lost a loved one and prepare the funeral service with them and with their chosen funeral director, as well as then actually taking the service either in church or at the crematorium; I run courses for people in our parishes, and a monthly evening meeting of modern worship for the young at heart. In between all of these things, I help train new Curates, Readers and Elders on behalf of the But even if I can't get to you on a regular basis, please be aware that I pray for you all every day in my private prayers, and especially for those who are mentioned to me by name as needing particular prayer. The results of prayer have been amazing over the last year, so if you would like prayers for yourself or a loved one, please let me know. May you all have a very blessed 2014. Articles for the Quartet are included if we have room, and if, in the opinion of the editors, they are of general interest to our readers. Please remember all articles will be subject to editing. We prefer you to contact us via email where possible. And may we be amongst the first to wish you all a prosperous and healthy New Year! January is traditionally a fairly ‘slow’ month for the Quartet - the deadline is just before Christmas and finding time to send in articles is not easy to do! We’ve found a few articles of general interest for you though, from a report on the big Storm from Robin Jackson on page 8 to a salutary warning from the police regarding a financial scam that is currently rife in our area - see page 18. One of our regular advertisers, Essex and Suffolk Pest solutions has even given us an article on rats! (See page 14). We would like to thank everyone who contributes articles. We do keep the articles to include when we have space so please be patient, it might be some time before you see your article published. We have received lots of thanks from readers who find the magazine very useful. Copy deadline for next edition: 19th January 2014. The magazine is self sufficient in that the revenue from advertising pays for the printing and delivery costs. STRATFORD PARISH ROOM ST MARY At last the new chairs have arrived, after many promises and hold-ups, and how good they look! Our thanks for the 5 chairs donated , the catering team of the Big Breakfast but mainly to the ladies of the Tea Party who raised the bulk of the money - well done ladies. The chairs arrived just as the Tea Party was ending for the last time and all set to unwrapping them and trying them out - all agreed a great success. Photo Shoot/Coffee morning, SSM Church 25th January 2014 10-12noon Following an initial meeting in December our plans to light Stratford St Mary Church in a blaze of colour are progressing well. It will be a mass of projections of pictures of various aspects of the church taken by local people (we’re particularly keen to get the children involved). This will culminate in an evening of celebration of how our church has serviced the community throughout its long history. As stated above, the Tea Party Club has now ended but instead will try out a coffee morning once a month on the 4th Wednesday which is open to everyone in the village, both male and female for a cup of tea/coffee, biscuit and a chat to try and get another social event going. If you are a new member of the community please come along and you will be made very welcome it's the only way to get to know your neighbours. We just need to make enough money to cover the cost of the Parish Room hire charge. We are keen to hear from anyone who has access to overhead projectors or indeed any other type of projector and anyone who is clever or creative with pictures/digital photographs etc. If you would like to get involved please come along to a coffee morning in the church on 25th January between 10 and 12noon. This will also be a chance to take photographs which may be used in the project so bring your cameras and your creativity and let’s get snapping! Since enough money was raised to pay for the chairs the Tea Party Ladies have raised a further £80 which has been sent to the charity "Scotty's Little Soldiers". This charity was started to bring a smile to the children of soldiers killed , mainly in ghastly Afghanistan, to send them a birthday and Christmas present and has now been able to buy a chalet at Great Yarmouth to give these families a holiday and put a smile back on the children's faces. Once again, thank you and well done ladies! Transport to medical appointments. If you live in Stratford St Mary and have difficulty in getting to and from medical appointments our friendly team are happy to help. Don and Iris Umfreville We can also help with transport to visit people in hospital. A further reminder - default starting time from the Parish Room, Stratford St Mary, has recently been changed to 09:45. Any exceptions will be mentioned for the particular walk (e.g. the walk on 1 January) On Sunday 8 December, we joined the Colchester NT Group for a walk around the Dedham area. About 60 turned up for an interesting stroll. Once again, although it was so close to home, it included parts I had not seen before and I even found the mystery tunnel/bridge across the A12 that I had been trying to find for years (coming out at Gun Hill, next to the new nursing home). Most people then piled into the Marlborough for lunch, some for festive fare, and some for traditional Sunday roasts. The final act was the quite special Ramblers’ Carol Service in Lawford Church. The church was packed with walkers and cyclists. The vicar strolled down the aisle, listening as members of the congregation shouted out numbers of their favourite carols, trying to choose the next carol to be sung. Future Events include: Wed 1 January – local walk 11:00 start, followed by mince pies & mulled wine Sat 11 January – Harwich (about 5 miles) Tues 21 January – Great Bromley (about 5.5 miles) Sun 2 February – Heybridge (about 4.5 miles) Thurs 13 February – Raydon/Hadleigh (about 5 miles) Sat 22 February – Felixstowe (3 or 5 miles) Recent Rambles On 25 November, ten of us travelled to Long Melford. However a young lady called Carol from East Bergholt who had missed us leaving from Stratford, managed to get to Long Melford and meet us in a ploughed field about a third of the way around the walk. She must get a gold star for ingenuity. After parking opposite Melford Hall, we proceeded past the medieval Hospital, and the magnificent church towards Kentwell Hall. We turned up the impressive driveway to Kentwell Hall and then skirted around the Hall, continuing northwards, through open countryside. Although we had decent weather, with some sunshine, the ground was wet and muddy in most places, making for difficult progress at times. Also, in several places, the designated paths across fields had not been re-instated, leading to detours around the edges of fields. Another feature was the large number of bridges we crossed, including some over the River Glem. All in all it was a pleasant walk Dave George 01206 322297 7 warm air from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from the Labrador current. It then intensified as it travelled eastwards propelled by the Jet Stream, a fast moving stream of air in the upper atmosphere. The storm was named St Jude as it occurred on the feast day of St Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of lost causes according to the ecclesiastical calendar. The New Testament has one page concerning Jude, brother of James i.e. The General Epistle of Jude. The story of St Jude The recent storm on Monday 28th October and in our area reached its maximum intensity between 7.30 & 8.00a.m. It had been accurately forecast although it was later in arriving than predicted. The pressure had been falling from 29.5 inches at 6pm on the 27th and reached its lowest point of 29.1 inches when a ferocious blast of wind occurred just after 7.30 am. The barometer then started to rise but it was at least 20 minutes before the wind started to abate. Before this time I had pulled my curtains back and wondered what all the fuss was about and muttered what a damp squib! I soon had to eat my words and within minutes, the electricity was off throughout Stratford St Mary and the other villages in the parishes. I was without electricity for 11 hours, but others in the parishes were not so fortunate. I understand that it was nearly two days before the current was restored at Holton St Mary. Most of the immediate damage was done on the squall line just after 7.30 am when a rush of colder air undercut the warmer air existing there before. Robin Jackson Council Tax Reduction Stratford St Mary Parish Council would like to make residents aware of information being sent to some households regarding a company offering to help secure a council tax refund on a “fee only if successful” basis. They are claiming that your property may or may not have been placed in the correct council tax band and are offering to assist in claiming money back. Around 250 trees were uprooted in the Colchester area and many in our parishes. A large Silver Birch tree was uprooted within 30 yards of where I live in Stratford St Mary. The sodden nature of the ground October being a very wet month indeed, I recorded a total of 104 millimetres(4 inches) of rain compounded the situation plus the fact that the trees were still heavy in leaf. Many of the pylons that were down were in fields that were not very accessible to reach. I have not been told about much damage to property and maybe we escaped lightly in this respect. Not surprisingly, train services didn't operate on Monday with a skeleton service the following day. If you think your property is not in the correct council tax band, we would ask that you contact Babergh District Council in the first instance as they will be able to help and at no cost to you. If anyone is concerned about any letters they may have received about council tax reduction, please speak to either the Parish Clerk or a Parish Councillor. The storm formed over the eastern seaboard of the U.S.A. due to the mixing of Stratford St Mary Parish Council 8 CAREAWARE - Care Funding Information for Older People in Suffolk FIRST RESPONDERS First Responders has now been up and running for almost three years. We are grateful to our team of volunteers for the time they give supporting the group. We would like to recruit more members to work alongside our existing team to provide more cover. You need to be at least age 18 and have access to a car. All training is provided by the East of England Ambulance Service at no cost to you other than your time. The training takes place over a weekend and is followed by a short qualifying test a week or so later. A CRB is also required. Back in October 2011 Suffolk County Council launched an exciting initiative to support older people and their families who are responsible for paying for their own long term care costs in a care home or for care at home. CareAware, a non-profit making public information and advisory service specialising in the issues relating to the funding of long term care for older people. Information and support from CareAware includes: · information on state benefits people may be entitled to and how to claim · sourcing appropriate care services and support organisations · guidance on topics such as setting up a Power of Attorney or Will · access to specialist advice on the best way to pay care fees, protecting assets and funding top-up payments To date, the average number of call-outs per month has been 2. Contact is made via a mobile phone which is switched on when a volunteer is on duty. The kit is kept with the on duty responder but can be turned off at anytime if their commitment that day changes. The time you spend on call is entirely up to you – you choose how many hours you are available for. For example, if you have children, you can say that you would be unavailable during school holidays. This service is designed to help people make informed choices about paying for care and to reduce the risk of money running out whilst still protecting any inheritance legacies. We hope that this new service will really help residents of Suffolk gain a better understanding of what options are available to them. If you are interested in becoming a Responder, please contact Sue Lawrence, 35 Strickmere, 01206 322066 For many people the funding of long-term care is likely to be one of the biggest financial decisions of their life and therefore it is important that we can help Residents of Suffolk access information and advice and make informed choices. If you want to know more CareAware can be contacted on 0800 954 0091 or email Suffolk@careaware.co.uk or visit their website www.careaware.co.uk 9 10 Higham 11 Raydon Fair Trade Coffee Morning A very foggy morning for our Fair Trade "Festive" coffee morning on December 10th, but all was bright and clear in the Church with the lovely Christmas tree and festive flower arrangements everywhere. All this accompanied by the aroma of good coffee mince pies and sausage rolls, and lots of good company of course. The Phoenix Brass concert, "A Christmas Carol" had been performed on Saturday night and was getting an excellent review from all of us who had been there. A special mention as well for two of our village residents who were part of the story telling team and did an excellent job. We're all looking forward to the concert next year now and wondering what it will be! I have to admit to being rather embarrassed when silence was called for and I was presented with a gift and thanked for organising the Fair Trade events and other odds and ends that I thoroughly enjoy doing. Thank you so much everybody I really appreciate your kindness and your continued support for our gatherings. Well, that's another year just flown by and our next gathering will be in 2014 on January 7th (Snow permitting of course!) Until then many thanks once more for your support and I wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Wendy Mumford 312123 12 Raydon and District Gardening Club To all members may I on behalf of your committee wish you A Happy, Healthy & Peaceful New Year. Soon you will be enjoying all the new snowdrops flowering (most years start around 18 / 20th Jan in our garden) and so it’s all starting again as Spring is hopefully just around the corner if on time about 6 - 7 weeks from now. As I write these notes (16th Dec) things are on the move as the new shoots of snowdrops and early daffodils are showing between all the fallen leaves. We leave some of the leaves on the gardens to be taken into the soil by worms etc, but I do rake up the leaves on the paths and lawns to compost down ready for a lovely free mulch next year. First meeting for your new diaries will be 27th February 2014 @ 7.30pm in the village hall. Subject will be disclosed in the February quartet along with March & April meetings. Remember all subs are now due at £9.50 pp for the coming year and your committee looks forward to seeing you all in February for yet another enjoyable gardening year with lots of interesting subjects and guest speakers,Spring & Summer shows + Summer coach outing, + outside garden visits all to look forward to. Geoff Horrex 01473310422. Back in November we had our AGM & social night and once again it was well supported and enjoyed especially by our guests, the food excellent, great raffles (we always have two different ones on the night), and our thanks to all who made it special. Thanks also to those who decorated the village hall, and provided the food. On the night our special Farmhouse Salver was presented to Mrs Sheila Stiff in recognition of her continued support in all areas of the club over the 33 years we have been running. That will take some beating in future. Now there`s a challenge to all members. 35th Year It will soon be time for the visits to some of the special winter gardens within a 50 mile radius of Raydon, i.e.- Marks Hall,& Anglesey Abbey to name two before we all get to busy with other things especially in the garden. www.raydon-gc.org.uk 13 that your home will be rodent-proofed so that they don't come back. We offer an expert rodent control service which includes carrying out a full survey to find the extent of the problem, tackling the infestation and giving advice on how to prevent it recurring. RATS!! Rodents can be a particular problem in the winter, and pest control experts are often called in to help households and companies get rid of them. Some estimates suggest the number of rats in the UK could be as high as 80 million, and there are also millions of mice. Although these rodents are with us all year round, they often move into buildings when the weather gets colder and so can cause more of a health hazard then. Rats carry a host of diseases including Weil's Disease, E.Coli and Salmonella, as well as parasites and viruses, while mice also pose health hazards, carrying infection and contaminating foodstuffs. There is lots more information about rodents on our website www.eandspestsolutions.co.uk or if you prefer to speak to a human, please feel free to contact us for further advice or assistance on 01473 328092 or 07979 301334. By: Nick Collinson, Owner/Manager - Essex & Suffolk Pest Solutions Ltd In the winter, food sources for rodents may become increasingly scarce, as the crops are gone from the fields following the harvest. This encourages them to seek out new supplies, and means they are more likely to infest homes and businesses. The cold weather also leads to more mice moving into houses, while rats also go into buildings and people's gardens. Constable Singers There are a number of steps that can be taken to prevent rodent problems arising, such as making sure that bird food is placed on a table and not just on the ground and that any leftovers are cleared up. Food rubbish should also not be left outside in bags, where it can be an attraction for rats. Use of a rodent-proof composter is another good way to avoid attracting vermin and ensure that kitchen waste is disposed of safely, helping the garden rather than encouraging pests. Filling in any gaps in outbuildings so that rats can't get in is another essential preventative measure. Would you like to sing popular songs from the charts and from the musicals. We would like more men in particular to join us. Ages vary from 14 to 60 plus. We meet once a week at Lambe School East Bergholt on a Thursday at 7pm and at Holton Village hall on the second Thursday of each Month. We singalong to backing tracks or guitar which our Choir leader Justin plays. We have workshops for all groups in the choir which are optional. However, if you do notice telltale signs of mice, such as droppings being left or electrical wires being chewed, or you suspect that there are rats in your outbuildings, then you need expert help. By calling in experts, you can be sure that you will get rid of the creatures properly and also The first session is free then it's £5 per week For more details contact Mel 01206298628 or Yvonne 298428 14 100 Years 100 Treasures A glossy, full-colour book to celebrate our magnificent churches and their treasures will be available from end of October to mark the centenary of this diocese. Our Diocese was formed in March 1914 from parts of the dioceses of Norwich and Ely; the parish church of St James, Bury St Edmunds became our Cathedral. The 120-page book 100 Years, 100 Treasures: A Celebration of Suffolk Churches, costs just £5 a copy and is part of the 2014 Centenary celebrations that start in earnest next March when the Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Revd Justin Welby visits Bury St Edmunds. The book features ‘treasure’ from every period represented in the diocese from the Anglo Saxons and Normans through to Middle Ages and on to the Victorians – in fact right up to the present day. The concept of pilgrims and visitors touring parishes to discover these remarkable treasures ties in neatly with the Centenary theme of ‘Pilgrims in Time’. They are of special significance to the churches who nominated them. Textile recycling bags are available free of charge Local Textile Bag Stockists: Capel St Mary Village Hall (Library), The Street IP9 2EP Generous sponsorship means that the book will retail for only £5; the normal retail price would otherwise have been significantly more. If you buy the book through your parish rep, then your Church is able to retain £2 of the cost price of £5. Please contact your church wardens to discover how to place your order. Further warnings after five people scammed out of £30,000 Police in Suffolk are urging friends, relatives, carers and neighbours to pass on advice to elderly people they care for after five people have been scammed out of almost £30,000. Since August, Suffolk Police has received five reports of virtually identical scams where a person calls their elderly victim, purporting that they are a Police Officer calling from The Met or Essex Police. “We are working with banks, building societies and taxi or courier companies to raise awareness of this particular scam but we are keen to stress to those people who have elderly family members or neighbours to spread the word and talk to them about this type of crime. Police are issuing the following advice: Your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out. The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing they may seem. If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number Use a friend’s of neighbour’s telephone instead. Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do. The ‘Police Officer’ calls the victim telling them they are from the police investigating fraud on their bank account. On occasions they claim to be working for the victim’s bank and they ask for account information including their card number, security number and PIN. Should the resident become suspicious the offender suggests they call 999 or 101 to ask for confirmation the caller is a police officer. The victim then calls the police, but does not realise that the offender has not hung up so goes straight through to them again. In some cases a female offender comes on the line and pretends to be working for the police control room and verifies the so called officer’s details. The caller is then handed back to the original offender who obtains the victims details. In other cases victims have been told a courier will be sent round to collect their bank card or have even been asked to go to their bank to withdraw large amounts of money which is again collected by courier. The latest incident in Suffolk happened on Monday 16 December. A 62 year old woman living in South Ipswich was duped into withdrawing nearly £4,000 from her bank account which was collected by a courier later that day. If you have been a victim call police on 101 or 999 if you are vulnerable and need police assistance – and remember allow your landline to clear for at least five minutes before you call, or ideally use an alternative line. 18 KENNY’S SESAW NEWS EAST BERGHOLT CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH A Happy New Year and a great big Thank You from everyone at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare for supporting us in 2013. We are indebted to everyone (and the Quartet) for all their invaluable help. Cemetery Lane, East Bergholt, CO7 6RZ Services - Each Sunday morning at 10.30 led by Visiting Speaker. Communion on 2nd Sunday of each month During the year the Volunteers worked hard, repairing kennels, making sheds watertight and completely refurbishing the main cattery. The Fundraisers also kept busy, raising £845 at the Christmas Fair and £1000 on the Annual Raffle. Due to holidays etc. we found it necessary to close the Thursday Coffee mornings during August but are pleased to confirm that they will reopen on 5th September. We look forward to seeing our loyal supporters then and would also be pleased to welcome anyone else who would like to have a coffee break with us. One morning when all the activity had died down and I lay toasting by the fire, the girls read out some chilling facts from a recent report. Apparently, in the year ending 31st March 2013, nearly 112,000 stray dogs were handled by Local Authorities across the UK. Over 5400 of those were in the Anglia region, 388 of which were put to sleep. Without the help of welfare organisations that figure would have been higher. Some of my best friends were minutes from being destroyed before they came to SESAW including a pregnant crossbreed. The lovely Lily presented us with a bakers dozen within a week of arrival. Church Secretary – John Jeffreys Tel 01206 298737 Email j.jeffreys.eb@btinternet.com Please think carefully before giving an animal a home. Unlike human children, we depend upon you our whole lives. If you are prepared to make the commitment, ensure your new pet is vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. All those dogs waiting to be put down were once adorable puppies. Just between you and me, the same goes for cats, but I didn't tell you that! After all, although small, I am a dog and have to maintain my reputation as Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.
