Welcome
December 25 already hosted two other
related festivals - the Roman 'birth of the
unconquered sun', and the Mithraic/Iranian
'Sun of Righteousness', popular with Roman
soldiers. The winter solstice, another
celebration of the sun, fell just a few days
earlier, so by commandeering that date,
Christians could get people to think about
Jesus on that day, instead of about their local
god.
Dear friends,
The evenings
seem to have
been drawing
in remarkably
fast, and the
season
of
Advent will be
upon us at the end of this month. Advent is
all about a time of waiting and preparing
ourselves for the birth of the Christ-child at
Christmas.
However, it's interesting that the first
recorded date of Christmas being celebrated
on 25 December was not till 336 AD. The
great early theologian, Origen (c.185-c.254),
preached that it would be wrong to honour
Christ in the same way that Caesar was
honoured - birthdays were for pagan gods.
One sharp-witted young person at Stratford
School asked me at an assembly the other
week 'Why do we celebrate Christmas on
25 December, when we don't actually know
when Jesus was born?' Either he has a
very historically-aware teacher (actually, I
know he has!), and/or he has been doing a
bit of reading himself, which is good to
know. And he is right, we don't know
exactly when Jesus was born, though we
do know that he was a historical character
- that is, he really did exist; we have reports
about him from historians of the time.
Another twist to the story came when Pope
Gregory introduced a new calendar. Eastern
Orthodox Christians decided to retain the old,
'Julian' calendar, which meant they
celebrated (and still celebrate) Christmas 13
days later, on 6 January, when the rest of
Christendom celebrates the coming of the
wise men to see Jesus.
Whichever you prefer, November is a time
to start thinking again about your relationship
with that surprising God who comes to us in
the shape of a vulnerable baby, and how you
can prepare yourself to welcome him into the
world and into your heart.
Some early scholars thought that Jesus was
born in the spring. Clement of Alexandria
(c.150-c.215 AD), for example, favoured
May 20, while a Latin treatise written around
243 AD gave it as March 21, because that
was believed to be the date on which God
created the sun. Polycarp (c.69-c.155 AD)
followed the same line of reasoning to
conclude that Christ's birth most likely
occurred on Wednesday, because
according to Genesis the sun was created
on the fourth day.

It’s a jam packed edition of the Quartet this
month as we head up to Christmas with all
sorts of seasonal events scattered
throughout the magazine and the four
parishes.
We’ve been fortunate this month to have a
couple of articles in to give you a ‘good read’,
so you will need a larger cup of coffee than
normal to enjoy with the Quartet this month!
Thank you Richard Thomson for an
entertaining recounting of the adventures to
be had whilst on the annual Churches Bike
Ride (see pages 12 and 13) and also to Brian
Such for his recollections from the Quintuple
Games Challenge in Stratford (Pages 6 and
7)
Can we remind you that we are still looking
for a volunteer Advertising Secretary for the
Quartet. The job takes about 6 hours a
month, and involves keeping a register of the
Quartet advertisers, invoicing them as
necessary and collecting payments. This is
mostly done by email these days, so you will
need to be computer literate. If you feel you
would like to do something for your local area
and come and join the team, contact us by

more than the games equipment, five game
adjudicators, one home team and a puddle
of rain water, not a very auspicious start.
Thankfully however, over the following 45
minutes many more participants arrived and
by 5pm the Challenge Trials were in full
swing.
The Challenge was conceived by
VillageLife, primarily to create a social
opportunity for Stratford St Mary and its
neighbouring villages in the form of a
competition between village representative
teams of five players with any combination
of age and gender, playing five traditional
pub-games, darts, nine-men’s morris,
petanque, skittles and Suffolk quoits.
The event was organised in two parts, the
first being an opportunity for players to
familiarise themselves with games that have
perhaps become less commonly played in
recent times whilst at the same time
providing an opportunity for the selection of
a team that could represent Stratford St
Mary in competition with other villages, in
the Challenge that would follow.
After two hours of close fought competition
involving players from several villages and
played on increasingly soggy ground, a
trials winner was announced. The winning
team and its reserve player, Helen and
Tony Allen, Stella and Ian MacKenzie and
Ann and Chris Mason were presented with
their trophy and trials winners medals in the
Swan, after the Challenge event. The
highest placed team from Stratford St Mary,
Celia and Christopher Griffin, Jennie and
John Simons and Christine Steward, took
on the responsibility for representing the
village in the Challenge proper.
With the rain having moved on, the main
event commenced shortly after 7pm.
Whether as a result of the cold, wet
conditions or for other reasons, sadly only
Higham accepted the challenge and a team
comprised of Martyn Carr, Sara Carr, Peter
Anderson, Jo Borges and Duncan Smith,
faced up to the Stratford St Mary team
across the same five games. The outcome
was an emphatic win for Higham who were
also presented with the VillageLife
“Music for the Winter Nights”

VillageLife at the Swan – The Quintuple
(pub-games) Challenge.
At precisely 2pm on Saturday 4th October,
after more than two weeks of near perfect
Indian Summer, the weather turned and the
rain came. Not gentle showers that might
have been ignored but a persistent heavy
downpour that lasted for three hours. Just
long enough indeed to interrupt the final
preparations for the VillageLife Quintuple
Challenge and create uncertainty in the
minds of potential contestants as to whether
they should attend.
At 4pm, with the contests due to start the
challenge marquee at the Swan held no

Quintuple Challenge Trophy and their
winners medals in the Swan.
VillageLife wish to extend thanks to Mark,
Jane and the guys at the Swan for their
enthusiastic support for the event. Many
participants said how much they had
enjoyed playing these old games again and
were encouraging in their recommendation
that a similar event should be held next
year. VillageLife and the Swan are
committed to doing just that, although
probably a little earlier in the year when
there will be greater chance of warm, dry
conditions and certainty of a lighter evening.
We look forward to welcoming teams and
individual players from more villages, at the
VillageLife Quintuple (pub-games)

Money from sponsors has now been
collected and the total achieved by bikers
and donations this year was £970.00. Half
of that sum will go to St Marys Parish Church,
Stratford St Mary and the other half will be
held in a central fund, from which the church
can bid for help with projects and repairs.
Mr William D excelled again this year with 47
churches visited and 91miles covered in the
allotted time.
A large thank you to all the bikers, to the
financial supporters, sponsors and to the
marshals and helpers in the church and the
chapel.

The club was founded in the early
1990s, with a constitution signed off on
03 October 1994, suspiciously by 2
members of the same family, unless you
think it might don on you out of the iris
of your eye. Don and Iris Umfreville duly
signed the constitution. Probably four
original members still take part in events.

Over the years the regular walks were
supplemented by dinners, summer
outings and annual holidays. We have
been to Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire up

Christmas Shopping
Has the panic set in for you too?

Christmas. That dreaded word is here
again. A word seemingly forbidden from the
English language during the month of
August, but come September it is upon us.
Subtly at first, like the jingling of bells in the
background music of adverts. Then October
rocks up and subtlety goes out of the
window.
I’m not sure when it was that I started to
dread Christmas. Perhaps it was around the
time it stopped being about what to wear to
the office party or champagne in bed on
Christmas morning, and started being about
fitting 14 people around a table designed for
six, or how large the turkey needs to be to
feed everyone, including my brother who
eats for three. Not to mention how much wine
I’ll need when my other brother drinks for
five.
I wake up in the middle of the night
wishing like I do every year that I’d started
buying presents in the January sales. The
children are easy. A quick flick through the
Argos catalogue and they’ve written their
letters to the North Pole. It’s the adults! The
pressure and price tag seems to mount every
year to buy that perfect gift that they will
treasure forever.
I never find it. Even when I’m elbowing
other shoppers out of the way and scooping
£100 worth of Boots gift boxes into the
shopping basket I know what they’ll think
(bubble bath again!). Even as I’m shuffling
forward in the queue to the checkout I know
I’ll see the exact same gift box as fifth prize
in my sister-in-law’s school raffle.
But this year will be different. There will
be no apologising to Bob the postman for the
15 oversized Amazon boxes he has to
deliver to our door each week. No battle in
the car park to squeeze the 4x4 into a space
designed for something Mr Bean used to
drive. This year I am taking a list of names
and a purse full of change to Stratford St
Mary’s ‘Not From the High Street’ Christmas
fayre. I will even take the children along

will take place on 9th of May 2015.
If in the process of your autumn tidy-up
you are planning on dividing your
perennials, or taking some cuttings,
please consider potting some up for our
forthcoming sale and over-wintering
them. All donations will be very
gratefully received.
As hoped I had some “Tools with a Mission”
“Scholar Packs” which TWAM hope we
might help with, they send them to schools
in Africa. They say that sometimes the only
person with a book or writing material is the
teacher! There is a list of items they would
like included in the pack and can you
believe it but it only costs around £4.00 to
include them all! We have 4 full packs
already so please see if you can help with
contributing some items or a whole pack,
just contact me for details.

It was also very nice just to sit and chat with
everyone, especially as two of our former
regulars were able to come again, so
welcome back both of you. Only one more
coffee morning before our festive event,
doesn’t seem possible but we gather again
on November 11th then its December 9th
and the last one for 2014.
There will be stalls to buy your
christmas gifts, food, refreshments,
raffle and a tombola, not to mention the
excellent company.

Gardening Club
Here we are in autumn once again, but at
least we can look back on what has been a
lovely summer, very hot at times and mostly
dry. Although the gardens suffered (lots of
watering to do) but in general most things
survived and produced some lovely flowers
and veggies. August and September are
months when there`s not too much to do
except harvest crops and admire the
gardens in full summer splendour, but now
it’s mid October as I write these notes and
since we have had quite a bit of rain there`s
plenty to get on with. I have been collecting
lots of seeds around the garden to plant up
for next year and it’s also time to tidy up the
garden (but not too tidy as nature needs
food and places to hide over winter), lift and
divide plants, then replant some things in a
different part of the garden if needed. It’s
also time to start collecting fallen leaves and
if needed put in a wire netting container to
rot down over winter to make a free mulch
for use next year. For all you gardeners if
you find any small seedlings / plants etc in
your garden and you do not need them don't
throw away, please pot them up and bring
them to High Elms The Street Raydon, I
can sell them at various plant stalls we hold
each year around the village.

The year seems to have flown by very quickly
and it’s November already which means on
the 27th it’s the members Social evening with
a short AGM. It’s your time once again to
come along and enjoy a buffet, wine, a table
quiz and lots of chat. Meet some of our
guests who do the judging at our shows,
meet our club President, bring along
anybody who wishes to join your club, and
of course pick your new committee to carry
the club forward into 2015. We also have
some silver ware (the Church Farm Salver)
to present to one lucky member who has
been chosen by the out going committee, it
could be you? And now for a bit of fun for all
members
"The Last Rose of Summer
Competition". Have a go it’s easy, just bring
along a single rose from your garden in a
vase. A table will be set aside for you to
display your rose, then all the other guests
& members can cast a vote by placing a 20
pence piece beside the vase with the best
rose. Winner with most coins by their vase
takes that money, all other monies goes to
club funds. This will be our last meeting in
2014 so please come and enjoy the fun and
quiz and refreshments. I look forward to
meeting you all once again.
Now back to September meeting when we
enjoyed an evening about the Suffolk Horse
with a difference, by a farrier so it was all
about their work of looking after the horses
to make sure they are well shod, and
suitable for the type of work they will do.
Many samples of shoes were passed
around from ponies, race horses, to Shire
& Suffolk Punch and a special shoe for
oxen. A great evening followed by many
questions and our thanks to David

Sharp at 9 a.m., tyres pumped, chain oiled,
shoulders braced, hat at a jaunty angle;
sandwich, banana (and a small flask in case
of emergencies) in the saddle-bag; I set off
on the churches cycle ride. At 9.03 I
returned to the house, convinced that I had
left the back door open. I hadn’t.

The hill up the green lane to Higham
racecourse has grown steeper in recent
years – either the Stour valley is sinking or
the ridge is rising, although I have seen
nothing about it in the papers – and at the
top I was obliged to make an unscheduled
stop to remove my jersey. After a visit to
Holton church, hidden behind the trees, I
had to endure half a mile along the highly
disagreeable B1070 but I was soon off this
and skimming over the flat land towards
Wenham. The sun had gone in and the wind
had got up so that necessitated another
stop to put my jersey on again. At Great
Wenham I met up with an old friend but after
a brief discussion with him on affairs of state
I continued to Little Wenham which is a
delightful spot – two miles down an unmade
track in the middle of nowhere with a
beautiful untouched church (13th C) on a
knoll beside a fortified manor house and
ancient barns, surrounded by trees and
farmland. The church has no electricity and
one service each year.

After spending some time in this peaceful
oasis I was behind schedule and hurried on
by way of Chattisham, Hintlesham, Flowton
and Somersham to Nettlestead where I
fancied a short cut along a bridleway which
runs for a mile or so downhill through a
tunnel of trees. I negotiated the twists and
turns at speed and burst out of the bushes
into a farmyard where the farmer and two
others were sawing up tree-trunks. They
greeted me cheerfully as I shot past. From
the next stop (Willisham) I took another
short cut down a footpath at the side of a
cornfield and was nearly catapulted into
some brambles when the front wheel went
into a rabbit-hole but reached the bottom in
one piece and proceeded through a ford to

Offton. Although it was now 12.40 I was only
the second visitor of the day which confirmed
my view that there were not so many riders
about as usual.

On to Elmsett where I found the church was
on a parallel road about 100 yards west.
Rather than continue to the village and come
back on the other one I decided to nip along
a track that joined the two roads.
Unfortunately this turned into a manicured
lawn and I feared that I would soon be
amongst the flower beds of the adjacent
mansion and I could see a possibly locked
gate at the end. I got off the bike and,
crouching low over the handlebars, scurried
past the house, half expecting a sash window
to go up followed by a voice shouting ‘Oi..!’
However, all was well, the gate unlocked,
and I was able to regain the road – and my
composure. A late lunch was consumed in
the Elmsett churchyard. I checked the flask
to make sure it wasn’t leaking.

A quick call at the Methodist church and on
to Whatfield where, like Holton, the church
was hidden away and I cycled gaily past the
entrance and had to go back, where I found
it squeezed in between two picturesque
cottages. Then down to Semer where the
church is situated on a sort of island between
the river Brett and sundry ponds within a
pleasing semi-circle of old cottages. It was
difficult to make out how to access the church
but a grass path between hedges eventually
led me to the back way in.

Bike Ride
September 13th 2014
Following this popular event the monies
raised have been in excess of £600.00

issue) for Raydon and grateful thanks
must go to all those who supported the
bike ride in whatever capacity.
Margaret Hammond achieved a
marvellous result of cycling 60 miles on
her exercise bike!!! This all helps
towards maintaining our Church for all
to appreciate.
From Semer I had to climb Watson’s hill –
well-known local horror – where I was
obliged to get off and walk the final yards,
and at the top decided this was an
emergency and checked out the flask again;
no chance of leaks now. Then to Kersey
and across country to Polstead church with
its splendid view across the Box valley, and
finally to Higham. Here it was nearly closing
time and I was offered a slice of excellent
cake for tea. The last mile home was
completed in fine style ‒ the bike had smelt
its stable...

Government consults on minimum
standards for floor space in homes
Some newspaper headlines have recently
referred to “Rabbit Hutch Britain” when
talking about the size of properties in the
UK. In mainland Europe room sizes are
more generous. Government has launched
a consultation on minimum space standards
for new dwellings. We would be interested
to hear your views.

months. The Councils have set a target to
reduce the number of empty homes by 400
between June 2014 and March 2017.

The county of Suffolk has always been a
low crime area and a safe and beautiful
place to live and work.
Suffolk
Constabulary is committed to ensuring it
stays that way. Burglary is one of the
most emotive crimes, we all like to think
our house is the safest place on earth so
it can be a very distressing for victims.
Unfortunately throughout the month of
September the area of Babergh West
along with Sudbury and Babergh East are
suffering an increase in these types of
crimes.
It is very difficult to plan where the
offender will target next, but the current
properties being predominantly affected
are isolated or secluded premises. Entry
is generally gained from the rear of the
property using force and they are being
committed in the main during day light
hours.
If you see any persons or vehicle at a
suspicious location or they just look out of
place please record the location and time
you see them, a description including the
registration number of the vehicle and
telephone the police on 999 if an offence
is occurring there and then, otherwise
please dial 101. Genuine people do not
mind being questioned by police as to
their entitlement to be on the premises.

Remove all keys from view, including
car keys, and keep them out of sight but
nearby should you need them for and safety
or fire risks (remember a device could be
used to hook keys through the letterbox to)

before they even try to set foot over the

on your garages and sheds if there is a
chance that you or neighbours would see
suspicious activity by having them.

Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye

away, and ask them to pick up mail

Leave radios or lights in your house on
a timer to make the property appear
occupied
·
Remove valuables from view of ground
floor windows and store any high value
items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly
secured safe that’s bolted to the wall and
floor
Crime Reduction Advice
Taking just a few steps can make a big
difference in keeping your home safe from
burglary. Here are a few tips:· L o c k
your doors and windows every time you
leave the house, even when you’ve just
popped out to the neighbours, or working
in the garden, remembering to double-lock
UPVC doors (lift handle and turn the key)

Make sure the fences around your
garden are in good condition, and cut back
hedging and shrubs so they would not ‘hide’
an offender on your property and helps
improve natural surveillanceofyour property
·
Secure bikes at home by locking them
to an immoveable object inside a locked
shed or garage
·
Consider upgrading locks if they do
not reach current British Standards or Kite
Marked approved, and fit window locks
with keys to all downstairs windows and

Practice Update October 2014
Flu, Pneumococcal and Shingles
Vaccinations
At the time of writing we have just held our
first flu clinic at East Bergholt. We were
fortunate to have good weather and
attendance was excellent. We vaccinated
approximately 1,300 patients against flu,
and approximately 400 of these patient also
had shingles and/or pneumococcal
vaccinations.
Eligible patients who were unable to attend
one of our flu clinics, on 1st October at East
Bergholt or 7th October at Capel, are asked
to contact the practice to book an
appointment at one of our mini flu clinics
which will be scheduled weekly. If patients
wish to decline any of the vaccinations
offered, please would they inform the
practice.
Patient Representative Group
At a recent meeting of the Practice PRG the
Members reviewed how best to represent
Patients. To assist the review it was decided
to conduct a Patient consultation exercise
in conjunction with the Practice. The aim will
be to obtain feedback on how Patients
would like to be involved in helping the
Practice understand the changing needs of
Patients and ultimately ensuring the
Practice offers the best service possible
with the resources at its disposal. Further
details on this consultation exercise will be
communicated via parish magazines and
other channels through the Autumn.
GP Partner Changes
Doctor Olowu joined the practice as a
partner on 1st September. He is a very
experienced GP and he is an excellent
addition to our clinical team. Unfortunately,
Dr D’Souza has decided to leave the
practice as he and his family will be
relocating towards London. He has been a
partner at the practice since 2005 and will
be missed by patients and staff alike. He
will be leaving at the end of February and
we are currently looking to recruit a partner
to replace him.
Training Days
Just a reminder that the practice will be
closed from 1pm on the following dates for
staff training:
13th November 2014 (Thursday)
10th December 2014 (Wednesday)
On these afternoons you can still visit the
practice to book an appointment or pick up
a prescription. However, no clinicians will
be available and all telephone calls to the
practice will be diverted to the NHS 111
service.
Phone System Upgrade
I had hoped that the new phone system
would be installed and fully commissioned
by early October but this has been delayed
due to a number of technical problems.
However, I’m pleased to report that these
have now been resolved and the new
system should become operational on 15th
October. By the time you read this, I hope
your experience when contacting the
practice by phone will have improved. You
can still use the same numbers to contact
