The brochure was a first step of an ambitious plan designed by ROMANIAN FILM PROMOTION to spread information about the growing local film industry. Romanian Film Promotion also edits an annual brochure entitled “Romanian Films”, presenting relevant info about the latest years’ Romanian feature productions. As you all know, in the last few years Romania became a favorite location for many foreign directors and producers. Beautiful locations, low-costs budgets or high standard equipment and personnel were some of the main reasons that made them consider Romania a good host for their future projects. Moreover, the international success of increasingly more local film productions is another sign that Romanian film industry is at the beginning of a new way. Romanian Film Promotion, organizer of the renowned Transilvania International Film Festival, became a member of the European Film Promotion in 2006. Over the last years, Romanian Film Promotion has been involved in developing a series of projects to support and promote the local film industry; since 2006, Romanian Film Promotion has been organizing annually the first Romanian Pavilion in the Village International at the Film Festival in Cannes and in 2008 it has organized the first Romanian Booth at The Berlinale Film Market. Moreover, since 2007, Romanian Film Promotion organizes the Gopo Awards, the traditional annual film industry awards. In 2010 Romanian Film Promotion organized with other 3 renowned festivals in the Balkan (the Sofia International Film Festival- Bulgaria, Sarajevo International Film Festival- Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Istanbul International Film Festival- Turkey), Operation Kino. The project consists of travelling film caravans in the most deprived regions of the 4 participating territories and aims to offer new perspectives for development of young audiences and talent, introduce online film accessibility and widen its reach to a larger number of territories. Another major event organized by RFP in 2010 to promote Romanian Cinematography and bring her closer to the audience is the White Night of Romanian Film. The event took place during a single night on September the 17th, simultaneously, in 9 locations from Bucharest. For any questions you might have about the shooting opportunities, local film industry and Romanian films please do not hesitate to contact us. TUDOR GIURGIU President Romanian Film Promotion shooting romania ← Peleș Castle © Florin Andreescu / Silver Bullet Film dear friends, All along the years, this noble and generous home of cinematography – Cannes Film Festival – endeavored to create and strengthen connections between the cinematographies of our century. Cannes Film Festival always outlined the most exciting, surprising and promising authors. It is also the place where many Romanian films were honored with important prizes: Short History by Ion Popescu Gopo ▪ Palme d’Or 1957 The Forrest of the Hanged by Liviu Ciulei ▪ Best Direction 1965 Blazing Winter by Mircea Mureşan ▪ Opera Prima prize 1966 Sunday at Six by Lucian Pintilie ▪ Great Prize of the Rencontres Internationales Films et Jeunesse – 1966 Traffic by Cătălin Mitulescu ▪ Palme d’Or short film 2004 The Death of Mister Lăzărescu by Cristi Puiu ▪ Un Certain Regard 2005 12:08 East of Bucharest by Corneliu Porumboiu ▪ Camera d’Or 2006 The Way I Spent the End of the World by Cătălin Mitulescu ▪ Best Actress, Un Certain Regard for Dorotheea Petre 7 California Dreamin’ (Endless) by Cristian Nemescu ▪ Un Certain Regard 2007 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days by Cristian Mungiu ▪ Palme d’Or 2007 Megatron by Marian Crişan ▪ Palme d’Or, short film 2008 Police, Adjective by Corneliu Porumboiu ▪ FIPRESCI Prize and Un Certain Regard Jury Prize 2009 The second half of this list entitles us to assert that the Romanian cinema is, nowadays, one of our best cultural ambassadors. And it goes on and on. This year’s edition invited in the Un Certain Regard section ”Loverboy” by Cătălin Mitulescu. We are positive that this year’s edition will be ruled, as always, by Jean Cocteau’s words about the festival, “an apolitical no man’s land, a microcosm of what would be the world if people would have direct contacts and could speak the same language.” Good luck everyone! I came from Los Angeles and to find this atmosphere in Eastern Europe is truly amazing.” Anthony Minghella director “Cold Mountain” “It is a truly unspoiled landscape, where is it possible to go and create a world – particularly a period world – where you can rotate a camera for 360° and not have any impediment whatsoever to the world you are creating. There was a very great willingness to go on an adventure with us and I would certainly recommend Romania to anybody contemplating a movie there.” Mick Davis director “Modigliani” “The potential is here [for Bucharest] to be another Prague.” FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI director “Callas Forever” “I have found here the excitement and the positive attitude that other big European studios have lost.” GREGG HOFFMAN producer “Catacombs” “The key reason we brought our business to Romania was construction costs. We were able to build sets on a scale that I couldn’t have imagined for the budget we had.” JOEL SOISSON producer “Dracula Resurrection” and “Prophecy: Forsaken” “Visually it’s a country that has a great deal of variety of landscape: city, village and probably – most importantly, very importantly – history. You can film all sorts of historical periods, and the ability to build here is phenomenal. The sets that we have, the price of those sets I don’t know where else in the world you could do that. And the technical skill, and the artistry, is top notch. So those things you cannot find here – you build. Taxes and incentives Companies directly involved in the cinematographic films production, distribution and exhibition, registered as such in the Register of Cinematography, benefit by exemption from payment of custom duties for imports of cinematographic equipment, film, processing substances and other goods used in the cinematographic industry, not produced in Romania. Even though a tax incentive system is not yet in place, production costs in Romania offer an attractive alternative. During this period, the Romanian film industry could not compete at the same level as those in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, but during recent years, it has realized a spectacular rebirth. 27 BETWEEN 2003 AND 2011, the National Film Centre (CNC) supported more than 100 featurelength films, many of them made by first time directors, and several short films. In 2008, Marian Crișan’s short, MEGATRON won the Palme d’Or in Cannes, while Bogdan Mustață’s, A GOOD DAY FOR A SWIM took home the Golden Bear in Berlin. Moreover, BOOGIE, Radu Muntean’s third feature, was selected in the Directors’ Fortnight section of Cannes and, in February 2009, RomanianBritish- Hungarian coproduction KATALIN VARGA, the debut film by Peter Strickland, won a Silver Bear at the Berlinale. 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS by Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or in the official competition of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival; CALIFORNIA DREAMING (ENDLESS), by late Cristian Nemescu, won the Un Certain Regard prize the same year. Going back in time, in 2006, 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST by Corneliu Porumboiu won the Camera d’Or (also in Cannes), while LOVE SICK, Tudor Giurgiu’s debut film, was selected in 2006 in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2011, Romania was represented in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes by LOVERBOY, Cătălin Mitulescu’s second feature film. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007, director Cristian Mungiu) shooting romania Film Industry If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle (2009, director Florin Șerban) © Strada Film Cinema Exhibition Cinema exhibition in 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 Cinema theatres 155 85 73 72 75 74 68 76 Screens 183 120 108 117 136 182 194 241 Seats 70,496 50,220 44,643 43,057 46,782 49,871 50,733 56,728 Multiscreens / Multiplex 9 10 9 11 14 19 20 24 Eurimages cinemas 5 6 7 14 13 7 8 8 Total screenings 124,525 104,934 95,929 98,908 127,893 185,428 239,965 298,63 Attendance 4,002,349 2,829,563 2,776,516 2,913,033 3,797,586 5,279,932 6,508,747 7,225,679 Attendance/inhabitant 0.19 0.13 0.13 0.14 0.18 0.24 0.3 0.3 Spectators/screening 32 27 29 29 30 28 27 24 Revenue (EUR) 6,053,800 6,640,400 8,031,700 10,211,600 14,285,700 20,603,000 27,206,900 124,649,413 Average ticket (EUR) 1.51 2.3 3 3.5 3.8 4 4.1 17.15 30 shooting romania Film Industry The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceaușescu (2010, director Andrei Ujică) Film Production in Romania 2006 – 2011 4 14 31 2006 2 3 2007 18 8 2008 11 7 7 2009 9 11 3 10 2010 18 9 2011 19 8 11 Number of : feature films 100% national Co-productions shooting romania Film Industry Box-office 2010 TOP 10 ADMISSIONS – NATIONAL FILMS TITLE/DIRECTOR DISTRIBUITOR Admissions THE GODMOTHER 2011 / VIRGIL NICOLAESCU & JESUS DEL CERRO MEDIAPRO DISTRIBUTION 26,788 HELLO!
