Bury half of the first course for walls one, two or three courses high. Bury the first full course if wall is four courses or higher. 3. Determine the total cubic feet of paver base needed by multiplying the number of linear feet of wall times 0.4 cubic foot. This will give you a 4 in. deep base, 14 in. wide. Please refer to specific product information for recommended base depth. Total wall linear ft. ____ x 0.4 cubic foot = ____ total cubic ft. paver base. 2.Determine number of blocks needed by multiplying the total number of blocks per course by the number of courses. Length of wall in inches _______ x Height of wall in inches _______ = Total square inches = _______. Total square inches divided by 144 = _________ square feet of wall Divide wall square feet: by 0.33 for 4"Flagstone / 4"Riverstone / Windsor Stone = _______ blocks. ® ™ by 0.67 for Diamond® Beveled = _______ blocks. by 0.72 for Diamond® Straight = _______ blocks. Example: 10 linear feet of wall x 0.4 cubic foot = 4 cubic feet of paver base. (1 cubic foot = 120 lbs.) 4.Calculate the amount of drainage aggregate that you’ll need behind the wall. Total linear ft. of wall x height ____ x 0.5 cubic foot = ____ total cubic feet of drainage aggregate. This will give you 6 in. of drainage aggregate behind the wall. Example: 10 ft. long x 2 ft. high x 0.5 = 10 cubic feet of drainage aggregate behind the wall. (1 cubic foot = 120 lbs.) by 0.19 for 3" Flagstone = _______ blocks. 5.Figure the total cost of your project using the Costing Worksheet. by 0.21 for Carlton™ = _______ blocks. Stake Out/Remove Sod 2. Add & Compact Gravel 3. Level Base 4. Lay and Level Blocks 5. Add Drainage Aggregate 6. Split/Cut Block 7. Mark & Cut Cap 8. Glue Cap 1. Begin by laying out the wall. Use stakes with a string line or a garden hose (excellent for curved walls) to mark the location of the back of the wall. Use the information below to determine the size of the trench needed, and then dig the trench. Trench width: • The width of the trench should be twice the depth (front to back) of the block. Example: For 6-inch high block, make the trench 12 inches wide. Trench depth: • For walls under 24 inches high (including the base course), make the trench deep enough to bury half of the block of the first course plus 4 inches of compacted base material. Example: for 4-inch-high block, dig a trench 6 inches deep. • For walls over 24 inches high (including the base course), make the trench deep enough to bury a full block of the first course plus 6 inches of base material. Example: for 6-inch-high block, dig a trench 12 inches deep. If your property slopes, start the trench at the lowest point and step the trench up or down as necessary, making sure that at least half of the first-course block will be buried. 2. Remove loose soil and firmly compact the soil in the bottom of the trench with the tamper. Add a layer of base material in the bottom of the trench; rake out and firmly compact. Base material can be paver base or an equivalent to ¾-inch minus (with fines) aggregate. Use the appropriate amount of base material for the height of the wall being built. 3. Use a carpenter’s level to level base material from front to back and side to side, check the level every few feet. Add more base material and repeat the process as needed until appropriate base depth is achieved. The more level the base material, the easier it is to level the block when building the wall. 4. Use a hammer and chisel to remove the rear lips from all blocks for the first course. Position the individual blocks side by side on the prepared base so that the front edges of the block are touching and the back edge aligns with the string line. Level block in both directions, adjusting with the rubber mallet if necessary. Begin next course by laying a block with the rear lip facing down, in a staggered relationship to the course beneath (running bond). Pull each block forward until the lip is securely in contact with the blocks below. Check each course for level before continuing and make adjustments with a rubber mallet. Repeat the process until you reach the desired wall height. 5. Place filter fabric directly behind the wall extending from the bottom of the first course to the middle of the top course. Fill behind each course with drainage aggregate (such as ¾-inch free draining) that extends 6 inches behind the wall. Compact aggregate with tamper. Organic soil or clay-type soil is not recommended for backfill material. 6. Cutting or splitting blocks may be required for your project. • To split a block: Use a hammer and chisel to score the block on all sides. Pound the chisel on the score line until the block splits. • To cut a block: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade. • To cut a 90-degree mitered corner: Use a circular saw with a masonry blade. Cut a 45-degree angle on two blocks. Glue cut sides together with exterior-grade concrete adhesive so the two faces form the finished outside corner. 7. To cap the wall, slide the cap forward so the face of the cap overhangs the face of the wall approximately 1 inch. For capping curves, trim the caps to follow the radius of the wall. Place a cap at the beginning of the curve, skip a space and place the next cap in the third position. Rest a cap on top of the original two, aligning the face with the adjacent caps. Mark the bottom of the cap along the edges (as shown in illustration 7). Use a circular saw with a masonry blade to cut the marked cap. On a 90-degree corner, two caps need to be saw-cut to achieve a 45-degree mitered corner. At the end of the wall, cut the cap so the manufactured edge is exposed and the cut edge is against the next cap. 8. Use an exterior concrete construction adhesive to secure the caps. Always wear eye protection when splitting blocks. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw. MATERIALS & TOOLS NEEDED (Some tools are available to rent. Remove loose soil and firmly compact the soil in the bottom of the trench with the tamper. Add a 3-inch layer of base material in the bottom of the trench; rake out and firmly compact. Base material can be paver base or an equivalent to 3⁄4-inch minus (with fines) aggregate. 3. Use a carpenter’s level to level the surface from front to back and side to side, checking level every few feet. Add more base material and repeat process as needed until appropriate base depth is achieved. Keep in mind, the more level the base material, the easier it is to level the block when building the wall. 4. Position the individual blocks side by side on the prepared base so that the back edge of block aligns with the string line. Level block in both directions, adjusting with the rubber mallet if necessary. Begin next course by laying a block in a staggered relationship to the course beneath (running bond) or other desired pattern. Check each course for level before continuing, adjusting with a rubber mallet. Repeat the process until you reach the desired wall height. Maximum gravity wall height not to exceed 24 inches including base course. Maximum column height not to exceed 48 inches. 4. Lay and Level Blocks 24 Use exterior-grade concrete adhesive to secure each block in the top two rows and caps for walls; all courses for columns. For additional construction details see anchorblock.com INSTALLING YOUR EDGER / PATIO STONE PROJECT Do • it • yourself Do • it • yourself Edger Installation 1. Begin by laying out the project using stakes and string line or a garden hose (great for curves). Dig a trench 6 inches wide by 4 inches deep. 1. Place 1 inch of paver base in the bottom of the trench and firmly compact. 2. Install paver base and thoroughly compact to a finished depth of 4 inches. Use a landscaper’s rake to remove any high spots, fill in low spots and compact. Repeat as necessary. 3. Position edgers end to end in the trench. Using a rubber mallet, tamp the edgers firmly into place. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure your project is level. 2.Prepare Base 4. Edgers can be easily cut to fit your project by using a circular saw with a masonry blade or a hammer and chisel. 2. Prepare and Compact Base 3. Lay two 1-inch-diameter pipes parallel on base. Spread 1 inch of play sand over compacted base. Screed the play sand by dragging a 2 inch x 4 inch board over pipes. Remove pipes and fill voids with sand. Read and understand the operating manual before using a saw. 3.Lay & Level Edger Units 1. Begin by laying out the project using stakes and string line. Add 6 inches to the perimeter of the finished patio. Mark and remove sod. Excavate area to a depth of 7 inches. 4. Lay patio stones in the desired pattern. If the pattern requires cutting, patio stones can be cut using a circular saw with a masonry blade. 3. Screed Sand 5. Place edging around entire project 3 inches from edge of compacted aggregate. Install edging and spikes according to the manufacturer’s instructions. 4.Cut Edger Units 6. Fill joints by sweeping additional play sand over the patio. Remove remaining play sand from the top of the project. If using the Natural Impressions® Foot Notes® patio stone set, polymeric joint sand may be substituted for play sand to inhibit weed growth between stones. How Many EDGERS Do I Need ? 4.
