Menorah transformed into an Israeli Marketplace when
we hosted our annual Tu B’shvat Shuk. Chef Eddie
took on the challenge to create a new authentic Israeli
dish this year and made Shakshuka. This one-skillet
recipe of eggs baked in a tomato sauce spiced with
cumin, paprika and cayenne served with bread was a
huge hit amongst our students, staff, volunteers and
community guests.

WEM Scavenger Hunt:
Team Flurry vs. Team Frost
Menorah’s Grades 8 & 11 girls enjoyed an incredible scavenger
hunt in the mall last week along with Jasmine & Rachel, friends
visiting from Los Angeles. The girls were given clues and scoured
West Edmonton Mall to find a kid's hanger, a pink spoon, count the
dressing rooms in Forever 21, and many other fun tasks.
Congratulations to Team Flurry for winning the hunt!! This
exciting trip culminated with a delicious lunch at Cafe Levi. Thank
you to our new Los Angeles friends for joining us in this good time!
Menorah’s first Ladies Paint Night was exceptionally fantastic thanks to
the talented and patient Mrs. Lee, Menorah’s Art Teacher. Our evening
was full of laughter as we learned interesting facts about each other and
experienced the art of painting, composition and colour. We are all looking
forward to our next paint night Mrs. Lee!

In our poetry unit, the
grade 8 girls have
been studying various
forms of poetry. They
have embraced the art
and created poetry
books from their well
written and designed
pages. Great job girls!
Kindergarten has really embraced
their class’ Winter Wonderland
theme this month. Not only have
they been studying the Arctic and
how Arctic animals adapt to the
northern climate, they too have
adapted to our own winter
wonderland. They have been skating

the seven special foods of Eretz Yisrael. They spoke about
the different minhagim - customs of the day. They had fun
painting, getting all crafty and even Miss Kramer joined
the fun! We can't wait to show you our Tu B'shvat
masterpieces!
Pre-K learned how trees grow as they watered and watched their tree
inspired bulletin board grow! They then celebrated Tu B’Shvat with
these beautiful trees.
Rosh Chodesh Sh’vat: A Science Lesson?
Our Rosh Chodesh Sh’vat assembly reminded us to
appreciate our bodies and then gave everyone a valuable
science lesson in anatomy. Students were split into 3 groups to participate in a relay race that included answering riddles about the
organs in our bodies. Once they solved the clue, they raced across the gym to retrieve the inflatable organ, raced back to attach it to
the traced out figure. Students had to place the body organ in the correct spot in order to win. Mazel Tov to our winning team
(pictured above), they placed their inflatable organs in the correct area and in the right order to which they appear in the body. Their
3D interpretation was incredible! Great job everyone!

Our grade 5/6
boys paused their
adventures with
optical illusion
and Mark Kistler
style creatures to
depict trees of life
in the style of
Gustavo Klimt,
an
Austrian
symbolist painter. The boys drew the trees,
painted with gold acrylic paint, outlined with
black permanent markers and adorned the trees
with acrylic paint using cotton swab tips. Their
drawing skills and attention to detail are
admirable.
Grade 8 Boys creating their
own Goalie Masks
Inspired by the work of Laurel Burch, the Grade 3/4
girls are making beautiful cats. Each girl explored
her color preferences using NGA kids app on our
new iPads. They drew their cats free hand following
a demonstration and are refining their painting skills
- which are formidable.
Working with threes,
the PreK class made
wired bead sculptures.
Individual choices were
practiced in the choice
of colors of pipe
cleaners and beads. The
results were beautiful.
Diluted glue and newsprint is the
foundation of these goalie masks in
progress. The boys have applied several
layers in preparation for painting. We
look forward to the finished projects!
It was a noisy art
experience in the
Toddler room last
week. They popped
bubble wrap, painted
the flattened bubbles
using a sponge and
then made prints on
the flags. Mrs. Lee
promises that the
completed banners
will appear soon.
Grade 2 finished their incredible soap stone Inukshuk carvings and their hard work paid off, great job!
