YOU`RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN Nov 15–Dec 28, 2014 Based on The Comic Strip `Peanuts`by Charles M. Schulz Book, Music and Lyrics by Clark Gesner Additional Dialogue by Michael Mayer Additional Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa Directed and Choreographed by Max Reimer 2014 | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT GLOBE THEATRE MISSION Our mission is to entertain, educate and engage Saskatchewan people in the art of professional theatre by offering high-quality performances to audiences, professional theatre training for artists, and classes for children and adults. GLOBE THEATRE VISION By 2022, Globe Theatre is attracting capacity crowds to its state-of-the-art stages and theatre school. 2014-2015 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES • • • • Highly Regarded Theatre and School Financial Strength Culture of Engagement & Innovation Broad Base of Stakeholder Support Cover: (Mary Poppins) Stephanie Roth, Jenni Burke, Gaelan Beatty, Rachel Lawrence, Jayne Lewis, Jason Hardwick, Jaire Olmos, Alfonso Banzon, Kaitlyn Semple, Clint Butler, Malia Becker | Photo by Sharpshooter Photography Inside Left: Chris Adams, Katie Murphy | Photo by Sharpshooter Photography 01 2014 | 2015 CHAIR REPORT T he 2014-2015 year was another great success for Globe Theatre. We mounted the largest season in the organization’s history and the theatre took significant steps forward on the redevelopment strategy for the Prince Edward Building. The six-play main stage season culminated in an outstanding production of Mary Poppins. With more than 200 costumes, a cast of 18 and a production budget of $550,000 it was the largest show ever produced on our stage. A provincial tour of A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline—the theatre’s first Saskatchewan tour in decades—was enormously successful and the Shumiatcher Sandbox Series showcased exceptional work by Saskatchewan artists. When box office revenues were down at the start of the 2014-2015 season, the Board of Directors and senior management took steps to address the shortfall. We moved ahead with preparations for our 2015-2016 provincial tour of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash by programming an inaugural two-week run of the production at the Casino Regina Show Lounge in June of 2015. With the tremendous support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Casino Regina we were able to generate significant box office revenues from Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash during the 2014-2015 season and have the production “tour ready” for the start of the 2015-2016 season. We are proud of Globe Theatre’s capacity to be courageous and nimble in responding to challenges as they arise. The Board of Directors and management made significant progress on the redevelopment of the Prince Edward Building. With construction scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017, members of 02 the board have had regular meetings with representatives from the three levels of government to apprise them of our plans and to solicit their support going forward. We engaged the Offord Group to carry out a Capital Campaign Feasibility Study; the results were that the theatre has the ability to raise funds privately to the extent required for the redevelopment. Working with P3 Architecture, we completed a development plan and the theatre awarded the contract for construction management services to Ledcor following a rigorous evaluation of submissions solicited through a formal Request for Proposal process. Recently, Nora Yeates from DCG Philanthropic Services was contracted as our capital campaign consultant. Another major focus for the Board of Directors and staff was the completion of the 20152018 Strategic Plan. With the vision of being “art driven; audience focused” the plan strikes a balance between fulfilling Globe Theatre’s mission and maintaining financial stability through the upcoming redevelopment of the Prince Edward Building. The strategic priorities are to deliver on our artistic mission and retain our audiences during the renovations, maintain a strong financial foundation, create and preserve an internal culture of engagement and innovation, and build a broad base of stakeholder support through increased patron loyalty and a stronger base of donors. Our thanks to the Globe Theatre patrons, volunteers, community, partners, sponsors, and donors; without your support, our mission would not be achievable. THANK YOU. The production played to 93% of capacity during its two-week run at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon and then played to sold-out or almost sold-out houses in Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Shaunavon, Yorkton, North Battleford, and Lloydminster. Globe Theatre’s first provincial tour in decades was made possible with the generous support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Culture on the Go program. Graduates of the 2014 Actor Conservatory Training Program were featured in our first main stage production of the season, Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Working alongside veteran Canadian actors and with the direction of Marti Maraden, the ten graduates made an outstanding contribution to the success of the production. Our holiday production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown directed by Max Reimer was beautifully executed but the show did not have the clear narrative and spectacular designs that our audiences have come to expect from Globe Theatre’s Christmas show. Lesson learned. The premiere of Rod Hayward’s Living in 04 the Spaces featured the acting skills and musical virtuosity of actors Britta Johnson and Nathan Pylypuk. Director Andrew North as well as set and costume designer Scott Penner created a lovely production that told the story of a unique friendship between a piano teacher and his student. Globe Theatre’s production of The Drowning Girls was one of the most beautiful productions ever featured on our main stage. Directed by Kelli Fox with set and costume designs by Scott Penner, The Drowning Girls showcased three gifted Saskatchewan actors—Jonelle Gunderson, Jenna-Lee Hyde and Judy Wensel—as the “Brides in the Baths”. Gunmetal Blues featured outstanding performances from Kevin Aichele, Steven Greenfield and Cailyn Stadnyk as well as direction from Max Reimer and a set designed by Kelsey Elvin—who is also Globe Theatre’s Technical Director. The final production in our 2014-2015 main stage season was Disney’s Mary Poppins. We were blessed to have a cast of amazingly talented actor/singer/dancers to bring the show to life including four gifted kids who alternated in the roles of Jane and Michael Banks. Director Yvette Nolan’s production of Salt Baby featured 2012 Actor Conservatory graduates Dakota Hebert and Nathan Howe, Curtis Peeteetuce who is the Artistic Director of the Saskatchewan Native Theatre, and Colin Dingwall. This bitter sweet drama about a young woman caught between two cultures and struggling with her own identity featured outstanding designs by members of the Globe production staff: the set was co-designed by Norm Daschle and Johanna de Vries, the costumes were designed by Charity Gadica, and Devon Bonneau designed the lighting and sound. Globe Theatre’s production of Salt Baby was showcased at the 2015 Talking Stick Festival in Vancouver. Inspired by the music of Peter Gabriel and told through modern dance Rael’s Journey was a powerful and evocative piece co-created by director Andrew North and 06 Right: Lucy Hill, Mike Gill | Photo by Designer Photo choreographer Johanna Bundon. Rael’s Journey featured three principal dancers and a chorus of ten dancers from the Youth Ballet of Saskatchewan. Globe Theatre’s 2015 Fusion Project brought together an ensemble of seven emerging artists to work with professional director and writer Greg Ochitwa to create an original performance piece. The result was a quirky, fascinating production set in a strange, somewhat threatening hotel. Norm Daschle designed a magical set for the production. Writer and actor Lucy Hill teamed up with sound and video designer Daniel Maslany and director Eric Rose to create an extraordinary production, A Date with the Night. Performed without dialogue, A Date with the Night tells the story of a young woman who is seduced by the world of her dreams. The performance ensemble included Lucy Hill as Elizabeth, Johanna Bundon, Mike Gill and Alex Hartshorn. With the generous support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Culture on the Go program we produced a two-week run of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash at the Casino Regina Show Lounge in June in preparation for a provincial tour A DATE WITH THE NIGHT Apr 16–25, 2015 Created by Lucy Hill, Daniel Maslany and Eric Rose SHUMIATCHER SANDBOX SERIES during the 2015-2016 season. When we closed the production on June 12 we had sold 7,300 tickets or 90% of the available seats at the Show Lounge. Many thanks to Casino Regina and the Show Lounge staff for welcoming us so warmly into your venue. The 2014-2015 season was the most ambitious season in the theatre’s history. We employed 104 actors over the course of the season; 63 of those actors are from Saskatchewan. In total more than 80,000 people attended our performances on the main stage, second stage, at the Casino Regina Show Lounge and on tour. time, expertise and wise counsel to this organization. Thank you so much for your support and your commitment to Globe Theatre. This season we said goodbye to Andrew North who has been with Globe Theatre for more than thirteen years. During his tenure at the theatre Andrew wore many hats: Production Manager, Planning Manager, Executive Director and Artistic Associate. His contributions to Globe Theatre over the years have been outstanding. You will be missed, Andrew. Ruth Smillie Artistic Director & CEO The entire Globe Theatre team and scores of part-time and casual staff pulled together to make this huge season the success that it was. My heartfelt thanks to all of our staff members, freelance artists and artisans as well as our intrepid volunteers whose hard-work, creativity and artistry delivered on the promise that “Anything can happen if you let it”. T he Prince Edward Building was built between 1906 and 1909 as Regina’s Post Office. Over its 109 year history, the building functioned as the offices of the provincial government prior to the completion of the Legislative Building, a federal tax office, Regina City Hall and the headquarters of the R.C.M.P. Regina District. The building was one of the first in Regina to be designated as a Municipal Heritage Property. In 1980, Globe Theatre became the tenants of the second and third floors. In 2005, as the theatre’s engagement with the community and the popularity of its programming grew, more space was needed for rehearsals, theatre school classes, and administration. The fourth floor was leased as part of a major renovation and expansion. In the spring of 2013 the owners of the Prince Edward Building put the building up for sale. In consultation with our advisory group, representatives of the City of Regina and with the approval of the Globe Theatre Board of Directors, the decision was made to purchase the building enabling Globe Theatre to secure its future as well as to protect and refurbish a significant heritage building in Regina’s downtown. Our goal is to redevelop the 10 Right: Photo by Danielle Tocker Our plan is to start construction in the spring of 2017. The renovations will take 18 months to two years to complete. While construction is underway, Globe Theatre will relocate to temporary premises. During the 2014-2015 season we completed a development plan for the refurbishment of the Prince Edward Building and engaged P3 Architecture as our lead architect. We continue to explore a number of options for a temporary home for the two years (2017-2019) that we will have to relocate while construction on the Prince Edward Building is underway. We awarded the construction management services contract to Ledcor Group and we contracted Nora Yeates from DCG Philanthropic Services to manage our capital campaign which will get underway early in 2016. The redevelopment of the Prince Edward Building will completely restore and upgrade one of Regina’s most valuable and beloved heritage buildings. It will also create a state-of-the-art performance facility that will meet the needs of patrons, artists, employees, and other Regina performing arts organizations. The multi-million dollar renovation of the Prince Edward Building will enhance the revitalization of the City Square district and the Frederick W. Hill Mall in the heart of downtown Regina. 13 2014 | 2015 THEATRE SCHOOL T hrough year-round classes, community workshops, and outreach projects, the Globe Theatre School brought theatre-based programming to nearly 1,000 people across Saskatchewan during the 2014-2015 season. The 2014 Summer Laboratory was a great success, with a total of 111 students ages 5-18 participating in our one- and twoweek creation camps, culminating with performances on the Globe Main Stage. Our fall and winter programming for children, teens and adults continued to grow this year with a total of 350 students. We launched successful new classes including Musical Theatre Workshop and Teen and Youth Playwriting. Our two advanced 20-week theatre creation classes for teens, Evolution I and II, performed for over 100 people at the Artesian in March. The 2015 Fusion Project, a rigorous three month training and creation process for young artists ages 16-19, was directed by the multitalented Greg Ochitwa. Seven talented emerging artists participated in the production which was presented as part of the Shumiatcher Sandbox Series. The Globe Theatre Youth Company launched this year, comprised of eight young people who show a passion and vocation 12 for theatre creation. Under the direction of Judy Wensel, the Youth Company created and performed their original work In Situ at the downtown branch of the Regina Public Library in December and also performed in The Moveable Feast, a large-scale community project produced by Curtain Razors Theatre that was presented as part of the Cathedral Village Arts Festival. Our provincial outreach program, GlobeOn-The-Road, expanded this year to include two intensive, long-term projects in two communities. Theatre School instructor Greg Ochitwa worked with 30 students at Maverick School in Swift Current over a two-month period. In partnership with Centre 48 in Montmartre, youth from Indian Head and surrounding areas participated in a four-month creation process also led by Greg Ochitwa. This process culminated in a presentation of an original show called Our Town, to an audience of nearly 200 at the Grand Theatre in Indian Head. We also brought creative drama workshops to primary school children in Pilot Butte. Right: (Top) Phoebe Belle, Sophia Montenegro, Brin Geran, Hayden Perrault, Izak Gelowitz; (Middle) Lily Howell, Yukimi Grayston, Lucas Babcock, Julian Ireland, Kassia Sobotkiwicz, Lila Gelowitz, McKenna Crawford; The Theatre School continued its mandate to increase accessibility by bringing arts education to children who experience social and financial barriers. The Enbridge Educational Outreach Program, in partnership with the Regina Public School Board and with funding assistance from SaskCulture’s Multicultural Initiative and from the Community Initiatives Fund, reached over 300 students this year. The program brought over 100 workshops into 11 classrooms in Regina Community Schools as well as two days of workshops with students at Asiniwkisik Education Campus at Kawacatoose First Nation. Artist educators worked with students to promote dialogue and multicultural collaboration; students learned how to work together, embrace differences and take risks in a safe and creative environment. After receiving a grant from the Community Initiatives Fund, Globe Theatre School partnered with the Autism Resource Centre to move forward with an Improvisation for Autism Spectrum Disorder Pilot Project. The project will consider how theatrebased improvisation techniques can assist and support adults and young people with ASD. Local improv artist and educator, Cameron Chomyn is the project’s head facilitator and has completed Phase One of the program’s development. The official program will be introduced in 2015-2016. All of the instructors at the Globe Theatre School are professional theatre, dance, and visual artists who maintain strong artistic careers while sharing a commitment to arts education. This season we saw many of our instructors working on both Globe Theatre stages, developing and premiering new work, and performing at theatres and festivals across Canada. The energy and commitment that the artisteducators bring to the Theatre School programming is inspired by their own professional artistic practices, providing the foundation of the Globe Theatre School’s vision to foster the growth of the next generation of Saskatchewan artists. Since 2008, forty-one students have graduated from the conservatory many of whom are now working on the Globe stages and at theatres across Canada. The sixteen-week program (May to August) is offered every two years at Globe Theatre; artists are selected for the conservatory through an audition process. Graduates of the 2014 conservatory were showcased in Globe Theatre’s Main Stage production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Marti Maraden. The instructors and directors for the 2014 conservatory are all leading Canadian theatre professionals. 14 Right: (Top) Rohan Keenan, Daniel Murphy (Bottom) Nikki Elek, Danielle Roy, Joshua Ramsden, Andrew Taylor, Nathan Pylypuk, Devin Wesnoski, Jacqueline Block, Katie Moore | Photo by Jared Carlson FACULTY Andrew North, Conservatory Director Module One: Ensemble Building and Devised Creation Ruth Smillie..................................................... RAEL’S JOURNEY Feb 26–Mar 7, 2015 Created by Andrew North Choreographed by Johanna Bundon SHUMIATCHER SANDBOX SERIES 23 2014 | 2015 AUDIT AND FINANCE REPORT G lobe Theatre faced some significant challenges at the start of the season: subscription sales were tracking below revenue targets and single ticket sales were not meeting expectations. As close to seventy percent of Globe Theatre’s operating budget is derived from box office revenues, this was cause for concern. In consultation with the Board of Directors, senior management moved ahead with two initiatives to increase subscription sales and generate additional single ticket revenues while controlling expenses. because the theatre increased the total number of performances in the season including Ring of Fire and Mary Poppins. Single ticket revenues were up by 47%. Public sector revenue increased over the 2013-2014 season with the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board for the touring of both A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline and Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Private sector revenues decreased by 16% directly related to one time services that were provided free of charge last year to complete the acquisition of the Prince Edward Building. Passion Arts was contracted to run a three month subscription telemarketing campaign. The campaign exceeded expectations selling more than 700 subscription packages. Working with Passion Arts provided senior management with some new strategies for subscription sales and acquisitions that are being implemented during the 2015-2016 season. Overall, total expenses increased by 26%. This was mostly due to a 44% increase in artistic expenses which are directly related to cast sizes, scale of productions, the addition of a seventh production and the overall number of performances. Facilities expenses saw a 17% increase while marketing expenses, which is correlated to the number of productions and performances, actually had a slight decrease. Administration expenses increased by 5% year over year due to a 2% cost of living increase for staff and increased credit card fees associated with the increase in box office revenue. In partnership with the Saskatchewan Arts Board and Casino Regina the theatre scheduled a run of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash from June 1 to 12 in the Show Lounge. The production was a tremendous success with more than 7,300 tickets sold for the two week run. With the support of a Culture on the Go grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash will be touring the province during the 2015-2016 season. The Ring of Fire revenues as well as a three week extension of the run of Mary Poppins allowed Globe Theatre to end the year with a surplus of $112,991. Year over year, total revenues for the 2014-2015 season increased by $978,408 primarily 22 Right: Kevin Aichele This was also the first full year of owning the Prince Edward Building. The ownership of the building has no impact on the theatre’s operating budget as revenues generated from the facility are sufficient to cover the building expenses including all debt servicing. Congratulations to management and thank you to the patrons and supporters of Globe Theatre Society for another excellent season.
