Arizant Healthcare Inc. is the pioneer and
acknowledged leader in perioperative temperature
management using forced-air warming. Arizant
Healthcare manufactures Bair Hugger® therapy,
the Ranger® blood/fluid warming system, the 241®
blood/fluid warming set and the brand new Bair
Paws™ patient-adjustable warming system.
Bair Hugger therapy includes forced-air
warming units and 19 warming blanket models for
use before, during and after surgery. Blankets are
available in styles for pre-op, the operating room,
recovery, pediatrics, cardiac and cath lab cases.
The Ranger blood/fluid-warming system uses
SmartHeat™ technology to continuously monitor
the temperature of the heating surface. This constant monitoring provides consistent heating and
allows the system to react quickly to changes in
flow rates. The system uses economical, easy-touse disposable warming sets and, because the
system contains no water, it is virtually maintenance free.
The system can be equipped with a High Flow
Disposable Set (6,000-30,000 mL/hour) or a Standard Flow Disposable Set (KVO-9,000 mL/hour).
The Standard Flow Disposable Set is also available
with a 30-inch extension and a needleless IV injection port.
The Ranger system also includes a pressure
infusion system that delivers a constant 300mm Hg
and can be used with the Ranger Power Pack, wall
or canned air. The pressure infusor is IV pole
mountable.
The 241 fluid warming set works in conjunction with the Bair
Hugger therapy, allowing the use of two warming modalities with
one piece of equipment. This system is ideal for KVO-3,000 mL/hr.
The Bair Paws patient-adjustable warming system is designed
for comforting pre- and post-operative patients. The system combines patient gowning and warming in one easy step. The Bair
Paws system is a patient hospital gown combined with a compact
warming unit. The system delivers warmed air through a hose to
channels in a warming gown, which is perforated so that the air
flows through the gown to the patient’s skin. The most impressive
feature of this system is a hand-held temperature controller that
allows patients to adjust the temperature of the air in the system
to a level that is comfortable to them.
Now, rather than threadbare and stained hospital gowns and
warmed cotton blankets, patients can enjoy their individual Bair
Paws warming gowns, made from soft, opaque material and generously cut to protect their modesty.

Bard Medical
Switching Means Cost-Savings
Only Bardex® I.C. Infection Control Foley Catheter Systems are clinically proven to reduce CAUTIs by up to 47
percent.3-5
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)
are a serious health issue,
responsible for 40 percent of
all nosocomial infections in
acute care facilities, directly
causing or contributing to
more than 7,500 deaths per
year, and costing the U.S.
healthcare system $3 billion
annually.1-2 Bard Medical Division has addressed this
patient safety issue with
advanced technology and
proven results. Only Bardex® I.C. Infection Control Foley Catheter
Systems are clinically proven to reduce catheter-associated urinary
tract infections (CAUTIs) by up to 47 percent. This is made possible
because of Bard’s exclusive catheter coating, available only on
Bardex® I.C. Infection Control Foley Catheter Systems.
Simply by switching to Bardex® I.C. Infection Control Foley
Catheter Systems, more than 1,000 hospitals have been able to
realize proven results in the decrease of CAUTIs and, in turn, the
elimination of associated costs. Studies have demonstrated that
the incremental cost increase per catheter is more than offset by
overall cost savings.3,5 Cost estimates per episode of CAUTI vary
from institution to institution. However, a range of institutions of
varying sizes and types have conducted studies to evaluate the
cost effectiveness of using Bardex® I.C. Infection Control Foley
Catheter Systems, with results reaching up to $573,293 in annual
cost savings.3
Complete Selection Covers All Clinical Needs
To complement the risk reduction benefits of the Bardex® I.C.
Infection Control Foley Catheter Systems, Bard Medical Division
provides a complete system of bacteriostatic and microbicidal
components.

Balance is the Key
The technology works by harnessing the anti-infective properties of silver to inhibit a biofilm before it forms. An advanced formulation consisting of Bacti-Guard®* silver alloy and hydrogel
coating on a urinary catheter dramatically reduces bacterial adherence and biofilm adherence. Only Bacti-Guard®* silver alloy is
engineered to an optimal balance that maximizes the bacteriostatic action while minimizing any risk of toxicity. In addition to
preventing bacterial adherence, this infection control technology
is designed to inhibit migration of pathogens into the bladder and
preserve the integrity of the urethral mucosa and the body’s natural defenses.

Camfil Farr is more than air filters. We are your Clean Air Solutions provider. Let us prove it.
Camfil Farr is the leading global air filtration systems manufacturer. Our products range from the durable Farr 30/30® prefilter to state-of-the art final filters such as our Riga-Flo® and Filtra
2000,™ and our line of Absolute HEPA and ULPA filters. This broad
range of air filters meets or exceeds the requirements of medical
facilities, guaranteed.
In addition to our products, Camfil Farr also offers the best
tools for selecting filters and monitoring and maintaining your air
filtration systems. We employ the largest and most experienced
R&D and engineering staff in our industry. Located at our sites
around the globe, our team understands the most diverse set of
clean air problems and their solutions. Over the years, Camfil Farr
people have developed software and equipment to help you maximize the performance of your air filtration systems, yet minimize
the cost of operating and maintaining these systems.
What we show our customers is often a surprise. Did you
know that most of the direct financial cost of clean air is NOT in
the price of filters? Our Life Cycle Cost consultants and their software can show you where your true costs lie. Did you know that
many air filters decrease in efficiency relative to the particles critical to the health of people? Let us visit your facility with our
Mobile Media Tester to analyze the performance of the filters that
you are presently using. Did you know that most people change
their filters either too soon or too late, costing them more money
or contributing to airborne contamination in their facility? Our
representatives will survey your facility and report the results to
you with our online facility survey reporting system. Using the services above, you will minimize your cost, stay in conformance,
forecast filter changes, and monitor the filter replacement and
energy costs associated with cleaning the air.
Take advantage of Camfil Farr’s investment in clean air technology not only by using the best filters in the world, but also by
capitalizing on our knowledge and tools to ensure the highest
quality of clean air in your facility.

The Dial Corporation
The Dial Corporation, with products that have been in the
marketplace for more than 130 years, is one of America’s leading
manufacturers of soap and other consumer products.
More than 1 out of every 3 households in the United States
purchases Dial products. Healthcare facilities also know and trust
the Dial name. Our complete line of healthcare handwashing and
hand sanitizing products offer mildness, low (or no) fragrance and
high efficacy to caregivers and patients.
Dial professional products are specifically formulated to
achieve necessary efficacy levels and help healthcare providers
prevent the irritation that results from frequent usage—a benefit
that can encourage regular handwashing and prevent the spread
of infection.
Dial’s Healthcare Product Lines include:
• General-use hand washes
• Healthcare personnel hand washes
• Waterless hand sanitizers
• Surgical scrubs
• Hair and body shampoos
• Moisturizing lotions
• Perineal cleansers
Dial Instant Hand Sanitizer has been specifically designed for
healthcare workers. It uses 62 percent ethyl alcohol as its active
ingredient and kills more than 99.99 percent of pathogenic germs
within 15 seconds, including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus
(VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Unlike other alcohol hand sanitizers, Dial’s product contains no
added fragrances or dyes that can cause skin irritation over time.
Being fragrance-free is ideal for a healthcare setting, as various
perfumes may provoke nausea or adverse reactions in patients or
care providers. In addition, Dial Instant Hand Sanitizer is delivered
in a thick gel formula that contains skin conditioners and emollients to help keep your hands feeling soft and smooth. The thick
gel also helps ensure that the product stays on your hands and off
the floors, where runny products tend to spill.
Dial Instant Hand Sanitizer is available in a 4-ounce flip-top
bottle, a 7.5-ounce pump and an 800 ml dispensed bag.
Dial Complete Antimicrobial Foaming Healthcare Personnel
Hand Wash (HCPHW) is the latest in a full line of hand-hygiene
products. Based on a patented formula that increases the biocidal
availability of triclosan to kill germs, it achieves a 3.5 mean log
reduction of Serratia marcescens after one wash while demonstrating the mildness of a lotion soap. Dial Complete HCPHW is
available in a 7.5-ounce pump (shown), a 64-ounce refill and a 1liter dispenser cartridge.
Using Dial Complete HCPHW with Dial Instant Hand Sanitizer
offers a “complete” hand hygiene program to help reduce the risk
of nosocomial infection while safeguarding the wellbeing of your
hands.

APIC booth #562/564
June 2003
DuPont Medical Fabrics recently introduced DuPont™ Suprel,™
a unique fabric born from a revolutionary composite technology
that provides an advanced level of comfort and protection for OR
gowns.
Suprel™ was developed using input from OR nurses who participated in comfort studies conducted at North Carolina State
University. Made from continuous filament fibers, Suprel™ is very
low-linting, minimizing the risk of introducing particulates into the
OR. What’s more, it has less surface friction than competitive
products, allowing for greater comfort and freedom of movement. And, it quickly transfers heat away from the body, adding
to comfort in the OR. With its unbeatable combination of protection and comfort, Suprel™ will undoubtedly raise the bar for
single-use OR gowns.
DuPont scientists tapped the strength of polyester and the texture of polyethylene to create
this bi-component fabric that not only meets
high standards for protection but also features
the industry’s smoothest and silkiest fabric texture, enabling incredible freedom of movement
and comfort in the OR.
With more than 18 new manufacturing
patents supporting its introduction, Suprel™ is
the only medical fabric made from polyester
and polyethylene, and the only one manufactured using the proprietary DuPont
Nonwovens Advanced Composite Technology (ACT). This new technology has
allowed DuPont Medical Fabrics to produce a fabric that offers a high level of
protection without compromising comfort.
Unlike the technology used with single
polymer fabrics, this composite fabric technology will allow DuPont to create an endless array of fabrics in direct response to the
evolving needs of the medical industry.
A line of surgical gowns made with
Suprel™ will be available during the second
half of 2003. In the meantime, hospitals
interested in evaluating gowns of Suprel™
can call DuPont Medical Fabrics at (888)

Product Profile
Medi-Flex, Inc.
ChloraPrep® One-Step
®
ChloraPrep One-Step is the first FDAapproved 2 percent chlorhexidine gluconate/70 percent isopropyl alcohol antiseptic and the only FDA-approved
chlorhexidine-based antiseptic solution
that meets the new CDC guidelines for
the prevention of intravascular catheterrelated infections.
Why ChloraPrep?
In clinical trials, a one-step application of
ChloraPrep exceeded the FDA’s criteria for efficacy. Many facilities have chosen ChloraPrep as their current antiseptic for site preparation and care in order
to facilitate “best practice.”
Fast acting
The formulation of 2 percent CHG and
70 percent IPA works together to provide
the most rapid and persistent antimicrobial
activity on the skin surface. The FDA found a
single 30-second application of ChloraPrep
to be “safe and effective” on most procedural
sites (two-minute application for wet sites).
Persistent
In a study measuring persistent efficacy,
ChloraPrep demonstrated a significant residual antimicrobial
effect over a five-day test period. The study demonstrated that ChloraPrep’s persistent bactericidal
activity reduced bacterial counts throughout the
test period. IPA allowed bacterial regrowth
between applications.
Frepp® (1.5-mL)
Our other unit-dose applicator provides a
superior, hands-off “friction scrub,” enhancing
the efficacy of the antiseptic solution it
delivers. Ideal for procedures such as blood
culture, peripheral IVs, blood donation,
accessing porta-caths, minor surgical procedures, blood gas draw, small biopsy and surgical site cleansing after stitching.
3-mL
Angled like a pen for the smooth delivery of
the ChloraPrep solution, the innovative applicator facilitates one-step aseptic preparation of the
patient’s skin. Ideal for procedures such as
catheter line insertion, site maintenance, chest
tubes, surgical site cleansing after stitching,
minor surgical procedures and orthopedic
pin placement and maintenance.

Microflex Corporation
Microflex Corporation, an international supplier of quality
latex and synthetic hand protection, based in Reno, Nev., introduces the FreeForm SE, a revolutionary new nitrile examination
glove.
FreeForm SE (standard exam) is the result of more than 18
months of research and development in the technologies and
techniques of nitrile glove manufacturing.
“In the past, less sophisticated manufacturing processes have
produced a wide range of nitrile gloves,” said Gene Barbera,
product development manager for Microflex. “Among those are
nitrile gloves of dubious quality and unpleasant characteristics, as
many nitrile glove users will tell you.”
With the introduction of FreeForm SE, Microflex claims to have
eliminated those more undesirable qualities without sacrificing
durability characteristics that originally made
nitrile an attractive alternative to latex.
“The problem with nitrile gloves, as
they are now, is their tendency to constrict, which over a long period of wear
can cause hand fatigue. That can be a
problem when you’re working with
small tools, or glass or dental instruments,” said Microflex Research and
Development Director Jim Tao. “Nitrile
gloves never had very good relaxation
rates, which causes them to bag and
bunch after wearing them for a long time.
You won’t find that problem with
FreeForm. Our research and development
team has gone a long way to eliminating,
that as well as other undesirable qualities,” Tao concluded.
FreeForm is touted by Microflex as a soft nitrile, exceeding any
other nitrile glove on the market in certain comfort qualities
including relaxation and modulus.
“Both of these ‘comfort qualities’ are at or near what you
would expect from a latex glove. There are very few synthetic
gloves that can make the same claim,” Barbera added. “There
weren’t any nitriles that could make that claim until now.”
For more information on Microflex or FreeForm SE, contact
authorized distributors or call Microflex client services at (800)
876-6866.
The Microflex Corporation Nev., ranks among the most
respected medical exam and industrial glove providers in the
world, and is the leading supplier of latex and synthetic hand protection to many industries. Microflex provides reliable, high-quality
gloves and exceeds customer expectations by delivering extraordinary service, product innovation and customer education.

Multisorb Technologies, Inc.
The SaniSorb X™ medical liquid solidifier from Multisorb Technologies, Inc. is the first and only infectious waste fluid solidifier
and sanitizer that has achieved EPA Registration (EPA Reg. No.
72675-1). SaniSorb X™ provides easier, safer and faster infectious
waste fluid containment in operating room suction canisters, red
bag waste and other medical containers. The liquid solidifier features a patented self-bursting technology that quickly absorbs and
immobilizes infectious bio-fluids.
Medical personnel simply drop the SaniSorb X™ pouch into a
suction canister or container and it dissolves within minutes on
contact with fluid to solidify and treat the waste. The waste is sanitized at the point of generation, minimizing exposure to operating staff and patients. Hospital operating room supervisors,
infection control coordinators and risk management professionals
in medical facilities across the U.S. are specifying SaniSorb X™ to
reduce the risks associated with the handling of infectious waste.

According to a spokesperson for Medina Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, SaniSorb X™ offers a better alternative to competitive
product designs such as polymers in bottles. “We have been using
the SaniSorb X™ pouches for a long time and they allow us to
incinerate our suction canisters more efficiently,” the
spokesperson explained. “The pouches also allow us to control
the amount used and help control cost.”
The pre-measured SaniSorb X™ rupturing pouches eliminate
the tearing and spillage associated with conventional products.
SaniSorb X™ creates no harmful vapors, noxious odors or dust
associated with other treatment agents. It alsoreduces particulates
and bacterial exposure. These characteristics were important factors in the decision to use SaniSorb X™ by administrators at St.
Vincent Hospital, also in Cleveland.
“We are very pleased to have our suction canisters treated for
biological growth with SaniSorb X™ pouches,” reported a hospital
manager. “Neutralizing the exposure for our staff is very important and the dissolvable pouch is a better way to administer the
product into the suction canisters.”
Studies have shown greater than 99.9 percent reduction in
Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella
choleraesuis after 30 minutes when SaniSorb X™ pouches are
used. The SaniSorb X™ pouches are registered in all states except
California as a solidifier and sanitizer for medical waste. The
pouches convert from red-bag waste to white-bag waste in
Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin
and Wyoming.

Regent Medical
HIBISTAT®
Regent Medical now offers healthcare practitioners a towelette application of HIBISTAT,® a waterless alternative to liquid
soap when routine handwashing is not possible or convenient.
The combination of a recognized effective level of alcohol (70 percent isopropyl alcohol) along with 0.5 percent chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) provides immediate and persistent activity to reduce
the chance of cross-infection of patients.
Previously introduced in four-and eight-ounce bottles, HIBISTAT provides rapid bactericidal action when hands are physically
clean but in need of degerming.
“The addition of the single-use towelette provides an ideal
method of hand cleansing for healthcare professionals who want
a quicker way to effectively clean their hands,” says Rollie
Kitchens, antiseptics product manager for Regent Medical, Americas. “Furthermore, the towelette is large and soft on hands, and
the emollients in the formula allow the towelette to be used comfortably throughout the day.”
HIBISTAT is designed for repeated use, providing quick-drying,
long-lasting antimicrobial activity that is gentle and non-irritating
to hands. Users are instructed to rub hands vigorously with the
towelette for approximately 15 seconds, paying particular attention to nails and interdigital spaces. The emollients contained in
HIBISTAT protect the hands from the potential drying effect of
alcohol. When using four-or eight-ounce bottles of HIBISTAT,
healthcare personnel are instructed to dispense 5 ml into cupped
hands and rub vigorously until dry. Water or hand drying are not
necessary with either application.

Regent Medical
Biogel® Skinsense™ PI
In response to surgical glove users who desire the fit, feel and
comfort of natural rubber latex along with barrier protection in a
synthetic alternative, Regent Medical® expands its CustomerDriven Gloving Solution™ portfolio with Biogel® Skinsense™ PI.
This powder-free, synthetic glove can be worn by itself or doublegloved over the Biogel® Skinsense™ N Universal glove to function
as a puncture indication system for increased barrier protection.
Constructed of polyisoprene, the synthetic material with the
same molecular structure as natural rubber latex, Biogel Skinsense
PI has a curved finger design for a natural fit with a micro-roughened surface. Its translucent blue tone
provides immediate visual indication that
Biogel Skinsense PI is made of a synthetic
material.
“Regent Medical understands the
importance of glove choice depending
on patient needs and healthcare professionals preferences or procedural indications,” according to Virginia James,
product manager for Regent Medical.
“Biogel Skinsense PI is another example
of our dedication to innovation and technology that will protect healthcare professionals and help them perform at their
best.”
Like all gloves in the Biogel product group, the Biogel Skinsense PI glove is powder-free and contains a polymer coating for
ease of donning with damp or dry hands. The gloves are 100 percent air inflated and visually inspected1 and meet or exceed all
ASTM standards for synthetic surgical gloves. Biogel Skinsense PI
is available in half sizes from 5.5 to 9, and sold in the standard
count boxes; 50 pairs per box (40 pairs per box size 9) and four
boxes per case.
Patented Puncture Indication System Provides
Confidence With Double Gloving
In 2001, a study on double gloving reported a 0.5 percent perforation rate of those who double gloved versus a 7.4 percent perforation rate for those who single-gloved.2 With the reported
advantage of double gloving, Regent offers latex and synthetic
patented puncture indication systems to alert the wearer of the
breach in the presence of fluid.
“Double gloving gives added protection during procedures
where there is an increased chance of glove puncture,” adds
James.
The moment the outer glove is punctured and fluid passes through the hole, a
conspicuous blue patch develops at the site
of the hole so the user can react to a breach.
With the combination of Biogel®
Skinsense™ N Universal underglove and
Biogel® Skinsense™ PI outerglove—double
glove users will experience comfort and protection with synthetic surgical glove options.

Certol International
Start cleaning in the operating room. ProEZ foam, a dualenzyme, neutral-pH detergent from Certol International, starts
cleaning instruments immediately by breaking down patient soils,
so that the instruments arrive in central services almost totally
clean and ready for sterilization after just a quick rinse.
Unlike most holding
solutions used to soak
instruments, ProEZ foam’s
dual-enzymes work to dissolve dried blood and other patient soils,
as well as inhibit bacterial growth. The product remains foamy for
up to four hours after you apply it. Because it’s a foam spray, the
instruments do not have to soak in a holding container; you can
safely and easily transport the instruments without having to
worry about splashing contaminated solution. A 24-ounce spray

Hardness: Mineral contaminants in water
bind with cleaning agents, reducing the effectiveness of those agents. Further, hardness
inhibits the soluability characteristics of water.
Finally, these contaminants are often a source
of staining and pitting of surgical instruments.
Aquachek™ tests Total Hardness from 0 to a
level recognized as “very hard” (425ppm
CaCO3).
Alkalinity: Total alkalinity is the measure
of the amount of alkaline buffers (primarily
carbonates and bicarbonates) in water. These
alkaline substances buffer the water against
sudden changes in pH. Total alkalinity is the
key to maintaining water’s balance.
Aquachek™ test Total Alkalinity from 0 to a
high level (240ppm CaCO3).
pH: Optimal pH level is key to successful
cleaning. Enzymes operate best within a certain pH level. The
Aquachek™ tests for pH level between 6.2 and 8.4, encompassing the likely optimum level for any enzyme cleaner.

Propper Manufacturing
Propper’s Vapor Line chemical integrator monitors the three critical conditions necessary for steam sterilization - time, temperature
and saturated steam. It is designed for use in both 121 degrees Celsius gravity and 270-272 degrees C pre-vacuum cycles. During sterilization, the dark colored bar migrates along a paper wick. If the bar
only reaches the FAIL area, the cycle was inadequate. When the bar
display is anywhere in the PASS area, conditions for sterilization have
been met. Vapor Line without extender can be used in wrapped
instrument sets or peel packs. Vapor Line with the extender is
designed for use in large fabric packs. The indicator can be placed in
the center of the pack, and the extender allows for easy locating and
retrieval.
Studies have proven that Vapor Line integrators are equivalent
biological indicators in performance. Whether used without packaging, in peel packs or in large challenge packs designed for biological monitoring, the Vapor Line does not show a PASS result until biological indicators have been killed. In this respect it is even capable
of monitoring into the “overkill” period built into every sterilization
cycle for an adequate margin of safety.
Vapor Line is available with or without the integrator. It is also
incorporated into Propper’s PASS/FAIL™ Steam Challenge Pack. This
pack yields results equivalent to those obtained with biological indicators when used in the AAMI approved 16 towel pack or equivalent
disposable biological packs. The results are instantly available, stable
and the indicator can be kept as part of your permanent records.

Venetec International
Venetec International was founded by Dr. Steve Bierman, formerly assistant director of emergency services at Scripps Memorial
Hospital, after he contracted Hepatitis B from an accidental
needlestick injury.
Dr. Bierman realized that the everyday perils of vascular access
— disconnection, infiltration and phlebitis — are avoidable. A
simple securement device, scientifically engineered to do what
tape and suture are not doing, solves all problems. That germinal
idea has spawned more than 25 proprietary StatLock devices that
anchor all types of catheters and tubes.
Dramatic clinical studies now confirm Dr. Bierman’s original
proposition that proper securement prevents complications,
improves catheter dwell-times and enhances healthcare worker
safety.
