Sisterhood News
Who
Will Receive Tbe Torah Fund Awayd. For
2004?
Every year Sisterhood selects a very special
candidate to receive the Torah Fund award for
excellence in service to our Sisterhood. Since joining
Beth El in 1993, Emily Goldman has served in
many capacities, allowing Sisterhood to intrude on
her time with her husband and three children. She
has served on the Sisterhood Board of Directors fbr
three years, worked as a sales associate in the
Sisterhood ludaica Shop, served as Sisterhood
Recording Secretary fbr two years, and served
tirelessly on the Sisterhood Catering Committee
preparing and serving fbod for our B'nai Mitzvah
Kiddushim as well as helping with our Mitzvah candy
baskets. Emily has always been rhere to lend a hand
whenever Sisterhood has needed her. We hope all
of you have made your rescrvations for the
Sisterhood dinner on November 4 when Emily
Goldman is presented with the Torah Fund Award
for 2004.

Simchat Torah Honors
On Simchat Torah, we were pleased to once again
honor congregants who have helped in major ways
to build Beth El.
The Kallat Torah Aliyah this year went to Pat
Danoff. Pat is best known as Sisterhood's Past
President who did so much to strengthen Sisterhood
(and Beth El) in her term of office. Pat does so much
else - singing in Ahavat Shir, chanting
Haftarot, blowing Shofar on the High Holidays, and
a dozen projects outside the spotlight. She is always
available to help, and always does her work with
excellence.
The Hattan Breishit Aliyah went to the leaders
of our newest minyan, Minyan Chaverim. That
minyan, which meets on the third Shabbat each
month, is totally volunteer directed and features a
more traditional davening. It is attracting a whole
cadre of congregants, especially younger families.
Its leaders - Melanie Bachrach, Debbie Feinstein,
Steve Kuperberg, and Aryeh Portnoy - well
merit our appreciation.

toward greater responsibilities). It is also an
Election Of Officers And Trustees
opportunity for people to hone leadership skills and
learn more about our synagogue.
The positions to be filled this year are: President,
Executive Vice President, VP for administration, VP
for education, VP for community, VP for religious
affairs, VP for strategic oversight, VP for finance
and development, Treasurer, Secretary, six trustees
to serve on the Board of Directors, and a Member
of the Beth El Support Foundation.
The Nominations and Recruitment Committee
encourages congregants to give serious thought to
assuming a leadership role this year. Members are
also urged to nominate candidates for the various
The Nominations and Recruitment Committee
is seeking individuals to recommend to the
Congregation to fill leadership positions for a rwoyear term starting right after the May Annaul
Congregation meeting. (Note, the membership of
this committee is designated in the Beth El
constitution.) We are asking that all members of the
Congregation give serious thought to joining the
Beth El leadership team. Criteria for being a leader
for Beth El's future include a love for Beth El. an
interest in seeing Beth El serve its membership and
community, an interest in helping Beth El move
forward in its contributions to its members and in
its programs, a willingness to give time and energy
to Beth El, and an interest in providing leadership.
It is also important to note that every position is
open) no position is designated to be filled by a
particular person, and the Committee will look at
each candidate for each position and give him or
her full consideration. Of course. it is also true that
there are some positions that are best filled by persons
who already have a knowledge of Beth El and have
perhaps served in other leadership roles. It is likely
that most of the candidates for the Executive
Committee (EC) will be people who have already
been involved at Beth El to some degree (but not
necessarily people who have already been officers
and/or trustees). However, some of the most
outstanding EC members have been people who had
not previously been active at Beth El but who bring
skills and expertise from the greater |ewish
community.
On the other hand, it is likely that candidates
for Trustee will be drawn from a broader community
and may include not only people with leadership
experience at Beth El but also people who have had
experience on committees at Beth El or perhaps
leadership roles in other (Jewish) organizations.
Indeed, a Trustee position involves a good deal of
leadership (and the role of Trustee is evolving even

Elolid.ay Report. At the September 28 Board
Finance Center. Shelly London would like to
meeting, Sheila Bellack reported that the number of
seats filled during high holiday services was 277L (8
more than last year). We brought in about $6I,000
(budgeted goal was $62,000). According to Rabbi
Rudolph, the holidays were a spiritual success and the
new space was well received.
Meru,bersbi,p Upd.aw. Sharon Zissman reported
that the membership committee is accomplishing
many tasks this year (there are currendy about a dozen
members on the committee). Beth El has had an
increase of 32 famtlies since June (we lost 25 member
units due to moving, death and several other causes),
for a net increase of 7 .We are currendy at920 member
units. Some of the recent activities sponsored by the
membership committee include open houses, discounts
for new members, resignation surveys, etc. They also
put together a new membership folder. Welcome
baskets are also a big hit (thani<s to |udy Futterman
for putting those together). Ongoing activities include
having the clergy welcome new members at services,
identifying board members to new members, and
articles in the scroll and Jewish Week. Future activities
include recruiting at NIH, nursery school non-member
recruitment, tea at a local apartment building, Beth
El information booklet, possibly reducing dues for
youngest members, and increasing membership goals.
Barbara Cohen described the progress of the
inreach committee. The committee is tryrng to call
and email all new members and welcome them to the
community. The chavurah committee is setting up
new char,'urot. There was also a Sukkot event for new
members at Barbara's house. Barbara would like to
get new members involved on committees,
Phyllis Solomon
reported that the September 12 event, "Welcome Back
to the New Beth El," was a huge success. The center
also met at Mark kvitt's house to discuss Beth El's
culture and ways to communicate that culture to
congregants and potential members. October 28 is
the next center meeting to determine goals and
programs for the year.

create a "culture of giving" pamphlet for new and
current members, focusing on long term giving.
Treaswrer's report. Things look good so far, but
it is still early in the year. Membership was budgeted
for 918 and we are currently at 920. The school
enrollment numbers are also good (as noted above).
The approved budget for construction is $12,334,000.
The cost of construction to date has been $6,058,839
(of which $4,439,025 was paid for direcdy from Beth
El members, and $I,619,814 was drawn from the
bank). The remaining cost of construction is
$6,275,L6L The goal is to raise another $2 million to
complete the construction project, to replenish the
working capital of the shul, and to keep the dues to a
reasonable level. Signed commitments to 8/31/O4
are $286,425. Signed commitments between
September I to 28 are $133,500. Verbal commitments
equal $18I,300.

Build the Joy
By Sarah Roark
What could be better than building
a model sukkah
in a shoeboxf Building a real sukkah in a friend's backyard.
On a hurricane-free Sunday, September 2 6, 2004,sixteen
Beth El homes hosted groups, consisting of families with
children in grades kindergarten through seventtr, to build
and decorate sukkot in their backyards. Host families were
provided with a gift lulav and etrog. Sunday school
teachers held classes in homes: teaching about the holiday,
demonstrating how to shake a lulav, and reading holiday
stories. Parents brought along snacks to enjoy eating in
the sukkah and crafts to decorate. Some of the many
beautifirl and creative ideas included: pinecone birds by
Ms. Swoffs first grade at the Reinhard house; papercum
by Cheryl Kreiser's class at the Slater home; bugs and
bees from clothespins by Mt Arnsdorfs fourrh grade at
the Schifrin house. The Handelmans, who hosted day
school families, *invited" special guests into their sukkah
by coloring and hangrng pictures of such famous |ews as
Aaron the High Priest and Golda Meir. Ms. Annis' second
grade was lucky to be invited to the Judson house, which
comes equippedwith its own resident guitarplaying dad.
Sally Heckelman, Religious School music teacher, was
able to sing in sukkot at some other houses. Rabbis
Rudolph and Harris visited a few diflferent homes. I-,ouis
Nagel squired Yuval Pinto, the Iprit M'd.aberet
(conversational Hebrew) teacher, ro teach Sukkot
vocabulary at still others. I hold the sukkah-hopping
record, having made it to six suld<ot.
This program, entided Baild, the Joy, is a wonderfiJ
way to start off the year with each age group's families
feeling a litde better acquainted. The first time Family
Education ran this program was in 1998. Since fhen we
have repeated it every year in which the calendar calls for
a Sunday school session between Yom Kippur and Erev
Sukkot. Each time we are blessed with some families
who have hosted generations of classes with successive
siblings, as well as brand new families, some of whom
are taking on the mitzvah of sukkah building for the first
time in their lives. Thanks to the many people who
worked to make this wonderfirl dav a success.

Our year has started off with great numbers and

October was attended by over 25 happy, bright-eyed
kindergarten, first and second graders! They winded
their way around to the synagogue suld<ah to make
gingerbread sukkot out ofgraham crackers and candy
and other goodies-one was for taking home, the other
was for eating! The weather was perfect and I know
that everyone had a fantastic time!We would love to

request from both myself and Rachel-please RSVP
as soon as you know your child is attending, so that
once we know the size of the crowd, we can arrange

the "little guysr" as they require more aftention at their

Kostrorna Rallies Against Teyrorisw
Wed.nesd.ay, Sepwm.ber 08, 2004
I(ostroma, Russia - On September 7, I(ostroma
hosted a mass rally against terrorism, arranged by the
City Administration with assistance from public,
religious and national organizations.
Residents of Kostroma, including virtually the
entire ]ewish community, filled the city's central square
to voice their protest, the fust event of this kind in the
city's history Chief Rabbi of Kostroma Nison Ruppo
was among the officials to speak before the large crowd.
In his speech, Rabbi Ruppo appealed to people to unite
in their struggle against the terrorism and in their
prayers to G-d.
The rally also involved Kostroma Governor
Shershunov, several deputies from the Duma, veterans
ofWorld War Two and the Afghan war, representatives
of the Christian and Muslim faiths, as well as local

attention. Sadly, though, while newproblems arise, the
needs in Bahia Blanca remain. This juggling of needs
and funds by the loint might be compared to the
challenge of responding to a chronic illness versus a
medical emergency.
The help that some people in Bahia Blanca have
been receiving from the |oint for food subsidies has
recendy been reduced to 50% of the cost of food per
week. In addition) more people need food subsidies
and approach the Kehilah's Social Worker,
Diana. Unfortunately these new applicants receive
only 20% of the cost of food per week from the Joint;
local communities are expected to cover the rest of
their needs. Not an easy task. The IGhila is providing
food staples donated by local individuals, medications
if available, free used clothing and free tuition to the
Jewish schools for their children.
While the Social Worker knows that the loint's
help in Bahia Blanca is significant, given the overall
situation in Argentina, she also knows that the needs
of the new clients would be better met if their
food subsidies were at the same 50% level. Instead, she
spends sleepless nights de ciding how to
meet "emergencies" through the safety net that our

In addition to addressing the basic need for food,
the community administers other programs funded by
the loint. "Baby Flelp," for pregnant woman and
babies from 0 to 4 years, supports 7 family units by
providing milk and nutritional food every two months.
Cribs, high chairs and baby carriages were promised
by the loint but have not yet arrived. The Joint also
provides allowances for 7 university students who give
back to the community as volunteers. One such
volunteer is a pharmacy student who distributes
medication.
More details about how Beth El's donations
supplement the Joint's assistance will be in future issues

Tuesd,ay, Sepvrnber 28, 2004
I(ostroma, Russia - Two rabbinical students
studying in Moscow at the 'Tomchei Tmimim'Yeshiva
arrived in I(ostroma in order to help the local lewish
community organize festivities for the upcoming
holiday, Suld<ot. The students - Shmuel Pauk and
Emanuel Aliskerov - will assist tlle city's Chief Rabbi,
Nison Ruppo, in this task, since the work required for
]ewish holidays has increased, due ro the growing
community. Shmuel is not new to this task: he
traditionally arrives in Kostroma for Jewish holidays.
The lewish congregation of l(ostroma is currendy
finishing their work for making a suld<ah. Local fewish
students assisted with the necessary arrangements for
Suld<ot celebrations.
Shipments of lulavim and etrogim have already
arrived to the community. These traditional four species
will be also delivered to neighboring rowns of Sharya,
