Fall is upon Us with colors bright and the shades of summer change to red, yellow and orange. Days are shorter and a bit cooler; nights are crisp and the smells of winter are nigh. Harvest has begun and many of us are preparing our gardens for a rest and our homes for the coming winter. As we reflect on another year that has passed all too quickly we are yet again reminded of the need to slow down the pace of our lives and truly enjoy each moment to its fullest. The year has been filled with many wonderful memories mixed with great sadness at the resent passing of one our Barony’s best, Baroness Marina Zanne’. She will be sorely missed and remembered with great fondness and many happy times. Our deepest most heartfelt sympathy is extended to her family, Baron Thomas Blackkeep, THL LLewellyn Flinthaven, and THL Eularia ‘ Amboise. May time ease your sadness and bring happy memories to you each day. Great Western War has come and gone with magnificent pageantry, many well fought battles, and gorgeous weather. Coronation and Queens Champion Tourney will be held in our neighboring Barony of Dun Or November 2/3. Since it is so close we hope to see many from our own Barony in attendance. 3 BEWARE!!!!!!!!!! The Frost Dragon is lurking in the hills, waiting… Our Baronial Anniversary is November 9. We hope the entire Barony is present to help defend our fair lands from this frightening beast! Come join us for a day of fun and fighting. There will be fighting, an Arts competition, a fund raiser raffle, and of course a fabulous feast! Champions will be chosen and of course, the Frost Dragon will come… Who will save us??!! Come, join us and ply your hand at slaying the might Frost Dragon! Yours in service, 4 An article on Arts? That’s just about anything I touch. Right now we are Arting like crazy for Frost Dragon, our Anniversary. We are trying silicone molds for the site favors instead of the carved soapstone. We thought we could try silicone molds with “Castle Stone” a plaster like mix that looks like.. you guessed it! It works great for solid sturdy shapes but alas, not so for site favors. We decided to do several different dragons for site favors this year. As the silicone molds can take temperatures up to 500 degrees we are using pewter and casting them. Interesting enough nothing sticks to silicone. This includes pewter. Casting with it is different because it just beads up in the middle requiring a little creative use of the casting spoon. Amazing how much you can play with it and move it around until it cools. It also matters how thick the silicone is, how completed the master was, and how big it was. All this affects your ability to move the pewter around. The silicone also holds the heat real well affecting the cooling time. This is the fun thing about the SCA you get to do all this crazy stuff. In what other group would you think “Let’s try silicone casting this time!”. We are busy having fun casting these different site favors. So come to Frost Dragon and get one of these cool favors. - Katherine of Angelesey 5 Frost Dragon Tourney Saturday, November 9th Warriors! One and all! Brave souls of Caid! Feels like winter has come early to Naevehjem and I fret that means it will a long and cruel one. While that might bode well for those inclined to skiing and other winter sports, I, for one, do not look forward to the seasonal head cold and the bone-deep aches that are part and parcel of the Yuletide season. Of course, grumbling about winter is a wonderfully period activity, reaching back through many, many centuries. I’m particularly reminded about a song stemming from the Albigensian Crusade. Early into it, two of the crusade’s original supporters, the dukes of Burgundy and Nevers turned around and went home, refusing the fiefdoms offered to them by Pope Innocent III. The march home, during the harsh winter of 1209, was accompanied by this anonymous song, reflecting the disgust of the greed and bloodshed displayed by the crusading forces. On the Approach of Winter When I see the weather turning cold and starting to freeze And the trees going bare and winter coming, then I want to Ease up and spend time with a good fire beside the brazier, And a glass of claret n a warm house during foul weather; May he have no pardon, who won’t take care of himself. I don’t want to ride out and burn places down, and so I really Hate going to war and the battle cries and piling up great pillage And robbing people; It’s a crazy enough business to waste everything; For little gain the masters in charge counseled with lies start wars and disputes. When I’m home by the fire and hear the wind outside and I see the loaded spit turning on the grill, and good wine from the cellar being brought up, then I want to drink and eat and rest, By the wood fire… (“On the Approach of Winter.” Anonymous.
