Chaplain’s Message
Reverend John Lunness
Catholics are Torn on How to Vote
The headlines are lies. They are lies because,
“faithful”, Catholics do know how to vote.
“Faithful’, is the key word here. I gave a homily
about this but it bears repeating. It actually bears
constant repetition because so many people who call
themselves faithful Catholics are far from faithful to
the Catholic Church.
It is time to go over the development of our being
faithful Catholics. As Catholics we believe that our
Church was established by God, Jesus Christ being
the second person of the Trinity. All other denominations have human founders. It is imperative that
someone who is a faithful Catholic to believe that
God founded HIS one Church and we are a part of it.
Now it has been established that the second person
of the Trinity established his one Church on earth.
Then what? Unlike that popular and catchy song,
“From a Distance”, God is watching us, but God is
watching us from up-close.
Someone should pen a song that embraces the Catholic reality, ‘From up Close’.

Greetings Brother Knights, Fall is finally here and it is my favorite time of the year. My letter this month will not focus on our
upcoming schedule, but will address any misunderstanding that
resulted from what I said at the last meeting. First of all I want to
apologize to anyone whom I might have offended. It was not my
intention to issue a mandate to all my Brother Knights, but offer a
suggestion based on what I think is best for our Council. This is
not about “bean counting” as someone wrote to me, but about our
reason for being Knights of Columbus. Our primary goal is
CHARITY! Ever y event we r un is to r aise money for those in
need. When we, as Knights, do not financially support a breakfast
or a chicken BBQ, that missing revenue doesn’t come out of our
pockets, but those of our Charities. Don’t get me wrong. All of
you who work so hard are appreciated more than you will ever
know. You deserve a free meal, beer and so much more at every
event we run. But, as Jesus says in multiple accounts in the Gospels, do you want your reward
now or in heaven? Even the
money that goes to running Columbus Hall, (which is very expensive) affects our Charities. If
we have no building, though, we
have no Bingo or Slots which are
our two biggest revenue makers
for our charitable gifts. As your
Grand Knight, do as I do, not as I
say. Leading by example is one
of my core principles. Since I
took over as Kitchen Manager
last year I have donated my salary ($4800) back to the Council.
This does not count my gas money and other donations that Mary
and I have made. All I ask is that you let your consciences be
your guide as we go out in the world to do God’s work.
Vivat Jesus!

Faithful Navigator Message—Assembly 2454
Meetings: Next Meeting — October 13, 2016
By: Joseph Gangi, Faithful Navigator
Greetings to all from the Assembly. We have at long last reached the end of summer, seen the tourists
finally leave us in blessed peace and quiet (?), run our best game plans for beer sales, breakfasts, etc, etc. ad infinitum.
(Yes, that’s Latin, not French). So, just when you thought the dust was going to settle, you see more troops gathering at
the fort for more activities. Who said this journey was going to be a cake-walk?
Upcoming events will include a talk in November, by a representative from Home of the Brave in Milford, DE. This is a
shelter for homeless men and women vets trying to get back into the mainstream of life after a time in service to our
country. In December, we will join several other organizations in laying of wreaths at the graves of deceased vets buried
at the Delaware Veteran’s Cemetery. These events are open to all members of the Council as well as the Ladies Auxiliary.
While I could write a book describing all the upcoming activities planned for the near future, I will keep you all up to
date and informed via updates by Tom Foglesong. So, just to touch upon a couple of important items on the agenda: The
Christmas party is officially set for December 7 (Wednesday). This year will see some minor change-ups thrown in to
keep it interesting. Secondly, March 4, 2017 will see the 4th Degree Exemplification taking place right here in Ocean
City, at the Princess Hotel. It will be a great opportunity for all our third degree member to take advantage of this closeto-home event, rather than having to drive hours from home. I will soon be posting an open letter to all Third degree
members which I hope will clear up some misconceptions about our Patriotic Order.
In closing I want to remind everyone of our basic mission as Knights. We are “In service to one, in service to all”.
Please keep this in mind every time you hear about a fellow member, regardless of Knights or Ladies, who may need
prayers or help of any other nature. We, as God’s children, are brothers and sisters and are charged by Him to love each
other as we love ourselves.
Don’t just talk the talk. Walk the walk. Be a Knight!
Vivat Jesus!

Just a couple of items to report on this month.
1) The window cornices have been installed. This completes the scheduled changes to the Hall. Many thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for their financial help in these renovations and for their assistance in many other ways in bringing these
changes together. To recap, here is what has been done in the last two years:
♦
♦
♦
♦
♦
♦
♦
Remodeled both the Ladies and Mens restrooms
Installed a tile floor in the serving area
Revamped the pantry behind the kitchen with permanent shelving
Installed a new ice maker and freezer for event use
Installed new carpet and dance floor
Painted the Hall, foyer and serving area
Installed new window treatments with sheers, drapes and cornices
Hopefully, the big jobs are done. There are always clean up and fix up items on our list that are continually being addressed. If you see something that you think is an issue, please bring it up to a Board member and it will be discussed at
our meetings. A couple of items that have been mentioned and that are being researched are electronic stove pilot lights
and a different telephone answering and message retrieval system. The Board is always open to suggestions. The next
scheduled meeting is the second Monday of October, the 10th, at 6 PM. All Brother Knights are welcome to attend.

Council Chaplain
Continued from Page 1
Before Jesus, the second person of the Trinity, ascended into
heaven to be seated at the right hand of God, (more popularly
known as the Father, the first person of the Trinity), he promised
to send the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity a.k.a the
Paraclete, (mediator or advocate), to continue to be with his one
Church, the Catholic Church.
What does that mean in practical terms for those of us who claim
to be faithful Catholics? Looking at the biblical data we see a
mandate that God is still Up-Close, not from a distance, and still
in charge of the one true Church he founded.
To be a faithful Catholic you have to believe that we were founded by Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, and we are
being guided by the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.
Ergo to be a faithful Catholic we need to know and accept the
teachings of the Catholic Church…of God.
What are some of the issues that the Catholic Church via the Holy
Spirit has propagated: abortion is wrong, (destroys life), euthanasia is wrong, (destroys life), homosexual sexual relations are
wrong, (closed off to life), same sex marriage is wrong, (closed
off to life), and gender ideology is wrong, (contradicts God’s perfect creation). All of these things, and much more, the Church,
inspired by the Holy Spirit, (God), states are always wrong, always sin, always evil.
DISTRICT DEPUTY NEWS
District #22
Bill Hammond, District Deputy
Greetings from Worthy State Deputy Stephen M Cohen
and staff. We are now into our busy time of the year but
let us not forget those in need. I would like to congratulate Worthy Grand Knight Wayne Straight and family
for family of the month—I know it is well deserved.
I would like to thank council 9053 for hosting the third
degree in September and congratulate all the new brothers. I would also like to thank the state officers and
those that helped with the degree — without their help it
would not have taken place. Let’s also thank the OC
Council for the food — it was great. Remember to make
sure all forms are on time, and install 1 brother a month.
Just a reminder — while I am generally around, when I
am on vacation, or otherwise away, please contact my

Insurance Update—September is Life Insurance Awareness Month
Ways to Pay for Whole Life
We live in a world of options and we are constantly bombarded by choices. Some of these make our lives more
complicated, but many of these choices are created with our satisfaction in mind. At the Knights of Columbus,
every product we offer has been designed solely for the benefit of our members and their families. When I present an option to you, it’s because a team of experts has discussed it at length to be certain it serves your best
interest.
We have a few options on how you can provide and pay for the whole life coverage that your family needs.
Many whole life policies call for premiums to be paid for your entire life or to age 100. But we also offer permanent life coverage with guaranteed cash values (and the potential to earn dividends, which are not guaranteed) through policies that offer a limited period of premium payments.
First, we offer “10 Pay Life” and “20 Pay Life.” Consider paying premiums for 10 or 20 years, and never having to pay for the coverage again. The plan is “paid up” and no more premiums are due. The plan stays in
force, the death benefit remains intact and the guaranteed cash value continues to grow. A plan with similar
benefits is “Life Paid Up at 65.” The difference over 10 or 20 Pay Life plans is that this permanent product requires you to pay premiums until age 65. Then, premiums stop (just in time for retirement), but the plan remains in force.
Finally, the ultimate in limited pay is our Single Premium Life product. Imagine buying life insurance — permanent life insurance — and only paying one single premium? It’s possible.
To learn more about these products, our long-term care insurance, disability income or retirement products,
please call me today.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
September, 2016
Judy and Joe Zanetti
Joe and Judy moved to lower, slower Delaware seven years ago
from northern New Jersey. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Carla, living in Fallston, MD and
son, Joe, of Fanwood, NJ. They are just as proud
and happy with their five, loving, but highmaintenance, grandchildren. Their families are the
center of their universe.
After serving four years of active duty in the US Navy, Joe returned to college to earn a degree in Economics from Rutgers University. His professional career concluded when retiring as the
Eastern Division Director of a Chicago-based advertising agency.

Right To Life—Bill McGarrity
OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH.
"LIFE CHAIN" IN SOUTH BETHANY BEACH ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2016 FROM 2:00 PM TO 4:00 PM. If
you need more information call Carolyn at 302-539-8775 or call Bill Mc Garrity at 410-641-7592. Here are the specifics:
Signs will be provided.
WHERE: ROUTE 1 AND SOUTH 9TH STREET, IN SOUTH BETHANY BEACH, DELAWARE
PARKING: PARK ON SOUTH 9TH STREET IN SOUTH BETHANY BEACH. TAKE A RIGHT TURN OFF OF COASTAL HIGHWAY
AT SOUTH 9TH STREET AND PARK WHERE PARKING HAS BEEN RERSERVED.
Monday, October 10, 2016, - a bus trip from Ocean City to the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal is being sponsored by St
Mary's star of the Sea/Holy Savior Parish. The cost is $27.00 per person. Please call the Parish Office at 410-289-0652 for
information.
The Knights of Columbus 9053 new Pro-Life Memorial (The cemetery for the Unborn) stands on the vacant lot on Coastal
Highway up near St. Andrew's Church. This new Memorial shows the dedication of the Knights of this Council to the prolife effort. The memorial consist of approximately 35 white crosses and a sign. These crosses stand in memory of children
who were not allowed to be born. These children were killed while they were in their mother's wombs. The Program Director for this important project was Joe Davis. Joe is a staunch pro-life advocate and he spearheaded this project for the
Knights. Assisting him were volunteers Wayne Straight, Joe Gangi, Tom Anderson, Jim Crabill, Neil Foote, Frank Celeste,
Frank Celeste Jr, John McDermott, Eric Anderson, Gene Dore, Dennis Rasmussen, Richard Thomas, Mary Straight,
George Ward, Ron Briggs, Joe Zanetti, Steve Mastbrook, Adrienne Celeste, and our Chaplin, Father John. We thank all of
those individuals who contributed in any way to this project and we apologize in advance if we missed the names of any
one who participated in any way.
In closing, please take a few minutes, if you can, to visit the new Pro-life Memorial sometime during October, Respect Life
month. Take a few minutes to think about the tragic loss of human life and human potential that occurs with every abortion.
The Memorial will be in place throughout the month of October, and through election day, Tuesday, November 8, 2016 as
a reminder to you of the unborn who have been killed, and also to remind you to vote for pro-life candidates on election
day.
Speaking of election day, you may have noticed that the political season is here. Yes, I know that most of us are sick of politicians, political debates, political scandals, negative political advertisements, and everything else associated with it all. It is now October 2016,
however, and the season will now quickly advance to that final big day in November when we all cast our ballots. Actually, with early
voting and absentee balloting, voting will occur much earlier for many of us. We at the Knights stay out of politics but we do not stay
out of issues of faith and morals. Standing up for the unborn is a matter of faith and morals. It is against the fifth commandment to kill a
human being, including one who is still in the womb. What good does it do if we oppose abortion on a daily basis with prayer, participate in pro-life demonstrations, and contribute to pro-life causes, and then go vote for politicians who are totally opposed to our values.
Those elected officials can and will support the culture of death in our nation and support abortion, partial birth abortions and so forth.
As Catholics and Christians we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves about candidates, their party platforms, and the specific
positions of candidates on issues of faith and morals before we decide on who we will support. This is merely a call to all of us to be
informed voters. If we can help you in the education process, let us know. You can contact me, Bill Mc Garrity, at bilmusicman@aol.com or at 410-641-7592.
Congressional candidates have responded to a survey on issues of interest to Catholics. Maryland residents are requested to visit the
Maryland Catholic Conference website to review this survey and to educate themselves on the positions of the candidates on these important Catholic issues.

the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist, and the power of the Holy
Spirit are central to the doctrines of the Catholic Church. She is a
gifted speaker who shares with enthusiasm and motivates many
hearts to experience the living God. There will be presentations, as
well as time for personal prayer and reflection. The entire cost of the

Just a reminder: Please join us on Friday evening,

Anniversary Celebration! There will be wine, beer, and
“heavy-enough” hors d’oeuvres that you won’t need dinner.
The venue will be decorated with the works of a number of
local artists – who happen to be our parishioners! (You

LADIES’ CORNER
President’s Message, September 2016
Ladies Auxiliary
By: Mary Castorina, President
Dear Ladies,
The September meeting went very well , thanks to Dee
Matthews and the board. I am sorry that I was unable
to start the new year with everyone. However, I know
that the meeting was in very good hands. September
started with our annual Bingo. It was a big success
thanks to our chairperson Nadine Efird and all the volunteers who helped. The next Bingo is scheduled for
April.
The Auxiliary sent a $500 contribution to MBS
school for tuition assistance for this school year. We
also sent a $200 contribution to St. Luke's for the Golf
Tournament in October. As announced at the meeting
our social chairperson Bertha Huettner has resigned
due to health reasons. We will miss Bertha’s hard work
and wish her a speedy recovery . Rita Salerno has volunteered to be the social chairperson for this year.

The cornices have been installed. This is the last of the
scheduled improvements to the Hall. Many thanks to
Ann McDermott who
worked hard on this and
coordinated the installation with the Blind Factory. They look great.
May God bless each and

RIGHT TO LIFE ACTIVITIES
Continued from Page 8
Where do the two major Presidential and Vice presidential Candidates stand on abortion? The National Right to Life has produced a
handy one page flyer summarizing the positions of the candidates.
One Presidential Candidate is pro-life. The other is pro-abortion. One
candidate is against partial birth abortion. The other candidate supports partial birth abortion. One candidate supports pro-life conservative justices as nominees to the Supreme Court. The other Presidential candidate only supports Supreme Court nominees who would
uphold Roe V Wade. Both Vice Presidential candidates are Catholics.
One has a solid pro-life record. The other Vice Presidential candidate
has a record of voting against pro-life measures. One party platform
supports "that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life." The
other party platform supports abortion on demand, calls for the repeal
of the Hyde Amendment (which restricts the use of federal funds for
abortion) and supports the funding of abortion providers like Planned
Parenthood. Please visit the National Right to Life website at
www.nrlc.org and educate yourself and your family about where the
candidates and the parties stand on abortion. Look for the home page
on the site. It contains the candidate comparison.
God Bless you all!
Color Corps Commander’s Message
By Neil V. Foote
I want to thank all of you who participated in the Mass of Remembrance and in the Dedication of the Children’s Wall on
Sunday, September 11 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. It was a
hot and humid Sunday, but we held our own.
Many thanks to Mike Carozza, Frank Celeste, Rick Fairbend,
Joe Gangi, Tom Herwig and Wayne Straight. My “thank you”
to photographer Chuck Carnabuci as well. A job well done by
all!
Editor Note:
Please help me keep this list current by sending me the
names of Brothers and Ladies of Council 9053 for
whom we should be praying. Also let me know if
someone can come off… and unless I hear from you, I
will remove names after two months. Thank Y ou!
We have an opportunity to have the District Marshall, Bob
Welenc, come to Ocean City for assistance in the training of
our Color Corps members. He would prefer the training to be
held on an afternoon either on a Saturday or a Sunday. He
would like to be assured that a sufficient number of members
will be in attendance—minimum of 8 to 10. I would like to
encourage all of you to take part in this training exercise.
Please let me know your response as soon as possible. (302436-0128)

Brothers All, good day! Are you proud to be a part of
our Catholic Men’s organization with all of our charitable contributions and successes?
Well, let me tell you how BINGO helps us. Year after
year, BINGO is the largest revenue generator we have.
Charitable Contributions exceeded $10,000 this past
year—just from BINGO. Our Council could not do
what we do without BINGO.

SUNFEST BEER SALES
My, SINCERE THANKS, to ALL of the KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS COUNCIL #9053 FAMILY, who volunteered to help at Sunfest. We SOLD more than 7400 cups of 12oz BEER! We had different degrees of skill at
drawing 12oz cups of beer BUT with PRACTICE we got pretty darn good!
The ladies and gentlemen who handled the money had the toughest job! They had volunteers, who were taking
customer orders, coming at them in many directions. While the men who handled the money did a very good
job, the ladies where AMAZING in how they handled the money! They were cool & calm, insisting that the order takers communicate to them clearly! It was obvious that their attention to detail and handling of money was
probably practiced at home. (no offencs guys)
This was our most profitable Beer Sales Event, EVER! You the volunteers made it happen. I know that some
volunteers had aches and pain before they came to help but they came and did their best. I, also, know that many
of the volunteers went home tired and sore. BUT pain seems to disappear when our efforts are SUCCESSFUL.
Success has a way of making people (volunteers) feel good about what we do.
Again, many thanks, you make me proud to be part of the Council #9053 family.
Brother Jim Stone
Editor Note: Special thank you to Captain Jim Stone… we were open 4-days, 12-hours the first three days and
only 6 on Sunday; Jim was there all those hours, just in case something out of the ordinary occurred… or the
team needed Thrasher Fries. Thanks, Jim… for all you work.
