ASSOCIATION 33 Years of BWSFA Club Happenings Past & Present, 1978-2011 NEWSLETTER Lake Simcoe Perch Fishing Trip! by Your Club Historian, Ron Angbrandt- byTim Cook- This article is to go over some old & new things that's happen in the past & things that are happening now. We started out with the Michigan Steelheader's then formed the BWSAin 1981 to better help Lake Huron. On Friday morning September 30th crews from liKing Kong" and "NO I.D:' departed for our annual perch fishing trip to Lake Simcoe. Crew aboard King Kong included Tim and Tyler Cook and Bill and Frank Rotondi. NO I.D:s crew included Paul Baker, Brent Gilmore, Brian Klosterman and "new guy Rich'For 8 years now, my crew has been making this trek to Pefferlaw located on the Southeast corner of Lake Simcoe being rewarded with limit catches of tasty perch and had no reason to believe this year would be any different. Some Information on the Club Historian: I am Ron Angbrandt and Ijoined the club and board of directors when the Blue Water Sportfishing Association first started in 1978, a non profit organization. The club first met at the Wagon Seal Center, then the Inn at The Bridge, McMorran, Acheson Vantage Point, and now we are at the American Legion Post No.8 on 6th street. I fist ran the BoatTournaments from 1978-1987. Back in the 1980's I served as the Club President for two full year's at two different times in the late 1980's.My wife Bev and I put together the Spring Fling Dance's,one year Pig Roast with the help of Dennis Evans.I also was and still am involved in Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs, Salmon StakesTournament and Club August Picnic, December Christmas Party and other events. The weather forecast did not look appealing prior to leaving town for the trip, but all decided we would not let that stop us and we were going anyway! The Purpose of the BWSFAis to promote the sport of fishing in Lake Huron by sponsoring, designing, or assisting in projects, make improvement to fish rearing, habitat or public fishing facilities. It is our purpose to educate, encourage, and increase the pleasure derived from fishing for our member's and the general public and to support various charitable groups. Also to establish more public accessareas and boat launching ramps to area streams, rivers & lakes. To advise the Department of Natural Resourceson fish plants, engage in legal suits to . protect our natural resources. Keep guard on polluters, and conduct fishing tournaments through out the year. Continued on page 2 Continued on page 3 33 Years of BWSF Past & Present - continued Project Events & Activities M. Westartedfishingaround 2:00 and began our search. It took only a couple drifts to find some "keeper" size perch (which we consider to be minimum 9") and after a couple of drifts the wind started to howl and changed directions making it too miserable to continue, so we decided to call it quits for the day around 6:00 p.m. with about 120 "keepers" between the two boats to be used for one of our dinners. The wind continued to build all night Friday with no signs of letting up for Saturday. During our daily visit to the minnow man Saturday morning he questioned our sanity that we would go out of Pefferlaw with the way the wind was blowing and recommended we try Barrie, which is on the northwest corner of the lake to supply some relief from the north wind. After discussions with the teams we decided to head north to Barrie, so after loading the boats back on to the trailers we headed north. After nearly an hour and a half drive we were greeted by about a 1-2 foot chop out of Barrie as opposed to the 6 footers out of Pefferlaw. After putting the boats in we located some fish to pick through and fished until about 6:00 p.m. and came away with over 200 keepers. The wind continued to howl all night Saturday leaving us with the same conditions Sunday morning out of Pefferlaw so headed north again. The school had not moved in Barrie so we anchored and began sorting through the perch. We ended up with over 300 perch between the boats and pulled lines at 4:00 p.m. We figured for the two trips to Barrie our catch to keeper ratio was roughly 5:1, which means to keep 500 perch we had probably actually caught roughly 2500 in two days between the two boats! I have been making this trip the first weekend in October for 8 years and this is the first year that we have not brought home our limit, but still feel we were very successful after overcoming the hand that we had been dealt by the weatherman. I would strongly recommend this trip to anyone who enjoys perch fishing. There is no place remotely even close to the amount of fish you will catch on Lake Simcoe. If you know a youngster who enjoys fishing, this is the trip for them! They will not become bored from the bite being slow, but be careful you will become easily spoiled! If any of you are interested in making this trip and needs information, feel free to contact me. We occasionally have an opening here or there if interested as well. Victor Ruehle's Caddis Fly Lure While fishing Delaney Buttes in Colorado I casted my caddis out 40' ,let it set 20sec and on the first twitch a bat flew down, picked up the fly, carried it 20' and dropped it on the water. I brought in the caddis, straightened the wing and 1) A #12 or #14 dry fly hook 2) Tan thread . 3) Wrap the hook shank back to the bend and cover the shank forward to 1/8"behind the eye 4) Using a small pinch ofdeer belly hair place the pinch on top of the shank so that thetips extend beyond the bend 1/2 shank length 5) Wrap the thread around the shank and pinch of hair 3 wraps cast it out 50: Waited 20sec and twitched the fly. and snug the wraps to flair the hair Two foot from the caddis a 16" rainbow broke water and dive bombed the fly. I set the hook and 10 min later landed the bow. Whenever I tie on a caddis that ~t_oryor a similar one provides a neat flashback. 6) Tie off fly in front of butt ends and dap with head cement 7) With scissors cut off butt ends at a 70 deg. angle with the shank and tight to the eye Tight lines EVANS AGENCY Itbul2Al>l~F~ COMMERCiAl.
