Newsletter Fall 2015 - Victoria Golden Rods and Reels
Victoria Golden Rods & Reels Seniors’ Fishing & Social Club Fall 2015 38 years of fishing and socializing with more planned for this year With a summer of bountiful salmon fishing and numerous social outings now behind us it is time to service our boats and saltwater gear to be ready to target the winter springs. It is a time to limber up the switch rods and tie up some flies for trips to the Sooke River for chum. As the lakes cool off the trout season will again pick up. Fall is one of the best times on the Island to target hungry trout as they feed prior to the winter months. We are pleased to work with Silver Threads to offer a course for seniors on fly-‐fishing Vancouver Island lakes. Our members have decades of experience fishing the local lakes and are anxious to share this knowledge with seniors looking to learn more about fly-‐fishing. Our social program is also full during the upcoming months. One of the special aspects of our club is the social interaction of members and their spouses. Nearly fifty people attended our August corn roast and birthday celebration for our over eighty-‐five year old members. Many no longer fish but continue to attend club events to share time and memories with others. Golden Rods and Reels continues to provide leadership and support of the ongoing work to help bring Elk Lake back to the productive fishing lake it once was. This effort led by Mick Collins has helped foster new partnerships with many organizations. The fall will be a busy time, full of fish, fun and friendship at the Golden Rods and Reels Fishing and Social Club. goldenrodsand reels.com The club meets on Tuesday 9:00-‐11:00 at Silver Threads, 2340 Richmond Rd., across from Royal Jubilee Hospital, located on the #14 bus route. Jim Macdonald is the librarian and will be happy to share the list of titles with you. Jack Milner is one of the original group that began the annual trips to Buttle Lake.
