,
What a beautiful month of the year. Well, you could say that
about almost any month in Southern California.
First of all, I would like to thank Ron Parker not only for being the acting
president in my absence, but for everything he does for our community.
Many things that he does go unnoticed or are done behind the scenes.
THANK YOU RON PARKER !!!
April has been a very busy month for the Senior Anglers of Escondido,
(SAE). Bob Taylor handled the fishing challenge, Anitra and Dave Gehrke /
Priscilla and Bob Milton organized the Lake Lopez outing and the
saltwater trip, leaving from Morro Bay, and Tony Smock spent many long
hours related to the Kiwanis fishing derby. These events would not have
been possible without the support of over 50 club members. A special
thanks to all of you. In the words of one of our club members " volunteering
is easy and fun". More details to follow later in this letter. Feel free to thank
these people, when you get a chance.
Don't forget May 9, for surf fishing with Bill Varney. We are honored to have
Bill give 'hands on' surf fishing instructions.
Our next meeting will be May 13 and the next outing May 30 to June 4 at
Lake Cuyamaca.
The SAE board received news that the 'students with special needs' fishing
trip to Lake Dixon scheduled for Monday, April 25 has been canceled. We
are working with the school officials responsible for this decision.
With regrets, I have been informed that Ron Casapulla has decided to resign
from the SAE board. He will remain active in the club, helping out in various
ways and at club functions. Ron has spent 4 years on the board and I hate
to see him leave. Ken Harrison will be assuming the duties of Public Relations Director.

MORRO BAY
During our annual club trip to Lake Lopez this year, some of our group went to Virg’s Sport Fishing.
They boarded the Fiesta and enjoyed a great outing catching a total of 51 various rock fish. The largest
fish was caught by Bob Melton.
LOCAL FISHING
Ten days ago tuna were biting out at the local banks, yellowtail were jumping into the boats at the islands and Colonet was providing nice rock fish and yellowtail. Mother Nature has changed it all. There
are very high swell conditions and winds with gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. The good news is this is
just temporary, so go fresh water fishing and standby as excellent saltwater fishing is just around the
corner.
Our three club fishing trips; June 6, July11 and August 1, 2016 on the Chubasco II are filled. However,
there are standbys available for our August outing. Please see Jim Stevenson at the May meeting to
sign up.
Chubasco Sport fishing is located at 1617 Quivira Road, San Diego, 92109. There is ample free parking
on Quivira Road in front of Sportsmen’s Seafood. Please do not park in the Sportsmen’s Seafood or the
Seaforth boat rental lots as you could be towed. There will be more information as we near our charter
dates.

KIWANIS TROUT DERBY
The Annual Hidden Valley Kiwanis Trout Derby took place at Dixon Lake the weekend of April 23rd and
24th. I chaired this event and had a lot of help from our membership. We had a total of 26 members,
men and women, that assisted during the two day event. They operated the kiddy pond, weighed and
registered trout and kept the participants aware of the biggest trout caught at any given time.
Beautiful Spring weather graced both days of the event. The winning fish was a 12 lb 12 oz. monster,
and the winner of largest Daily First Place fish on Sunday weighed in over 9 lbs.
The kiddy pond fish were larger than past years with a couple weighing in over 2 lbs. The children were
thrilled as they walked away with their trout.
Kiwanis provided both a pancake breakfast and a BBQ lunch both days to all of our members that were
hungry.
Thanks to those individuals who helped me with this event. The Kiwanis Derby was successful and we
had fun!
