ALUMINUM CAN DRIVE
Jack Nocera is our “Can Man,” so everyone
remember to bring your cans to our meeting or
arrange with Jack to drop them off. The cans help
pay for monthly raffles and to cover club expenses.
Please clean and crush so we don’t collect ants, too.

UNITED ANGLERS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NAMES JOHN
MILLS TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Norwalk Resident is Life-Long Outdoorsmen, Board Member of
High Desert Saltwater Anglers Fishing Club
United Anglers of Southern California is pleased to announce the recent appointment of John Mills to
its Board of Directors. The Norwalk, California resident is an avid hunter and angler with decades of
experience in the field and on the water. He brings with him to this important post not only a life long
love of the outdoors, but also a true desire to protect our state’s great sporting heritage and natural
resources for the next generation.
Mills is on also on the board of the High Desert Saltwater Anglers (HDSA)—a long established
fishing club of about 45 members based in Palmdale, California. Even though Mills resides far from
that high desert community, he has had a longstanding relationship with the club—one that began
when members of the club joined Mills on one of the numerous saltwater charter trips he likes to
arrange. Friendships were forged, and Mills has been closely involved with the club ever since.
Mills’ influence and involvement in the club is part of the reason why it has 100-percent membership
in UASC. “For several years now, every member of our club has also been a member of UASC,” said
Mills. In fact, joining and maintaining UASC membership is a club requirement and is built into our
yearly dues,” he added. It’s through this club connection that Mills will help direct the future efforts
of UASC.
As part of UASC’s ongoing fishing club outreach program, angling clubs that maintain full UASC
membership and hold at least one UASC fundraising event annually get club representation on the
board. “This is a great way to reward fishing clubs that encourage their members to support United
Anglers,” said UASC President Tom Raftican. “More importantly, we want these grass-roots angling
clubs to have a voice and feel truly involved in meeting the tough challenges we face as anglers and
conservationists,” added Raftican.
Mills’ life long passion for fishing, hunting and the outdoors should prepare him well for the
challenges ahead. An avid fresh and saltwater angler, Mills hits the water as often as he can. A
private boat angler since the 1950s, and still owns—and regularly uses in fresh and salt water—an 18foot deep-vee runabout he bought new back in 1968.

UA appointment continued from page 3
He’s a retired fleet maintenance and repair superintendent for the City of Los Angeles, where he was
responsible for keeping everything from lawnmowers to helicopters running smoothly. Mills recently
re-joined the labor force, working as a warehouse manager for an Internet retailer.
Another indicator that Mills is the “right man for the job”—he’s passed his love of fishing and the
water to his two adult offspring and their three kids. As proof that fishing runs deep in this family
tree, it’s also worth mentioning that Mills’ nephew Mark Mills is a key manager at Shimano American
Corp. in Irvine. In fact, Mark helped organize UASC’s 2005 Garage Sale fundraiser at the Shimano
facility.
“We’re thrilled to have John onboard to help guide the future direction of UASC,” said Raftican, “and
we’re grateful for all the support HDSA and other grass-roots organizations have provided over the
years.”

Recipes of the Month
Seafood Stew
3 Italian Roma tomatoes
5 garlic cloves, peeled
1 tablespoon olive oil
11/2 onions, julienne
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 quart fish stock
3 small boiling potatoes, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, then into 1/8- inch slices
2 carrots, peeled, cut in half lengthwise, then into 1/8-inch slices
1 Morita chile stemmed, seeded and julienned
1 1/2 pounds assorted fish fillets, such as, flounder, sea bass, snapper, cut in 2- inch chunks
1/2 cup chopped cilantro leaves, for garnish
Lime wedges, for garnish
Preheat the broiler. Place the tomatoes and garlic on a baking tray and broil until the tomatoes are
charred all over and garlic is golden. (Tuck the garlic under the tomatoes as necessary to prevent
burning.) Transfer to a blender and puree.
Heat the olive oil in a heavy soup pot over moderate heat. Cook the onions with the salt and pepper
until translucent. Pour in the wine, turn the heat up to high and reduce by half. Pour in the fish stock
and bring back to a boil. Add the potatoes, carrots, garlic tomato puree and morita chile and cook 3 to
5 minutes. Add the fish. Cook 2 to 3 minutes, until the fish is just done. Sprinkle in the cilantro and
serve immediately with lime wedges.

OUTBOARD MOTOR - Almost new (30 minutes run time) 18 HP 2 cycle 2 cylinder short (15 in) shaft
6 gal remote tank w/new fuel line and bulb. This motor is all manual controls with no provisions for remote steering,
shift, or throttle. It weighs approximately 90 lbs. Made in Europe with all stainless fittings and socket head screws.
Powerhead is Husquavarna(Swedish motorcycle) with CD ignition. Full F N R gearshift. I ran it the 30 minutes at
Lake Elizabeth (fresh water). It starts on the first pull when warmed up and performs perfectly. Great for a kicker on a
bigger boat or perfect for a 12-16 ft aluminum boat for fin and feather or the breakwaters. This is an off-brand motor.
It is 15 yrs old. I think this motor was marketed as a NISSAN, and the parts will interchange. New cost of a 18 HP
outboard is in the $2000 range. Make me a reasonable offer and it's yours. It even comes with a standard tool kit !!
