The consultation, organised by South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), is running from 1 September till 23 November (12 weeks). The proposals aim to strengthen the health services used by most people – switching resources from bed-based hospital care to community-based care, so that the majority of support will be provided as close to home as possible, helping people to remain independent. Two-hour public meetings to discuss the proposals will take place on 20 September in Ashburton Town Hall (1pm, 4pm and 7pm), and in Buckfastleigh’s St Lukes Church on 22 September (6.30pm). Ashburton and Buckfastleigh is part of the CCG’s Moor to Sea locality, and under the proposed new model of care there are four elements – clinical hubs, including community hospital beds and minor injuries units (MIU); local health and wellbeing centres; health and wellbeing teams; and intermediate care provision. The health and wellbeing teams would be co-located with GP services, where possible, offering community nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social care support. Ashburton and Buckfastleigh patients will have the option of visiting the clinical hub at 6 To advertise in Totnes or Newton Abbot, which will include MIUs open from 8am-8pm to reflect the times of greatest demand. There would also be x-ray available at these times. Providing care to people in or near their own home means that some buildings from which inpatient and community services are provided will no longer be required, so 10-bed Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Community Hospital would close if the proposals are approved. Dr Nick Roberts, chief clinical officer at the CCG, said: “People’s needs are changing and so is the NHS. “Our aim is to get people’s views on how we can best meet the future needs of our population in a way that is affordable and sustainable. Staying as we are is not an option. “To deliver more expert care to people in their own homes, we are proposing to invest money into more community staff and enhanced community care services. “We would work in partnership with local care home providers Dr Nick Roberts, to provide more local South Devon and Torbay intermediate care beds. CCG’s chief clinical officer “We are keen for as many people as possible to be involved in our consultation, which is why we’ve arranged three meetings in Ashburton. “To ensure that different people have the chance to give their view, I would ask that people don’t attend all the meetings. Space is limited at the events, and we want as wide a range of opinions as possible.” Consultation documents setting out the proposals and explaining the reasons for change and the benefits they bring will be available online (www. southdevonandtorbayccg.nhs.uk/communityhealth-services) after 1 September. The documents can be requested in paper form by emailing sdtccg.consultation@nhs.net or calling 01803 529745 during office hours from 1 September. please see contact details on page 4 New Patient Offer Exclusively for you Curious Goose Nursery Buckfastleigh Hands-up who wants FREE childcare? Dyrons Journal is the local Talking Newspaper for visually impaired people in Teignbridge. It is recorded weekly every Friday at the offices of the Mid-Devon Advertiser, using the Newton Abbot and Teignmouth editions of the Advertiser – and we are very grateful for the support we have been given by the Advertiser. The Talking Newspaper movement dates back to the early 1970s when cassette tape technology had become readily available for the domestic market. The Journal was founded a few years later in 1977 and until very recently the weekly recordings were being made on 90-minute cassette tapes. However, the recording and copying equipment had become obsolescent and was steadily wearing out and the quality of the end product was not what was expected in the 21st century. So on 20 May, 2016, after a year of planning and fund-raising, the Journal finally went digital. The weekly editions are now produced on USB memory sticks and, where necessary, listeners have been provided with a suitable digital player. Each week a faithful band of volunteers reads as much as possible from the Mid-Devon Advertiser – news, letters, editorials, What’s On, and sport. This is recorded using a mixer desk, laptop and special software and copied onto USB sticks. These are put into plastic wallets and sent out Freepost to the listeners who may receive them on Saturday but certainly no later than Monday. When the listener has finished he/she simply puts the stick back in the wallet, turns over the address label and posts it back to us. Until the recent change to modern technology we were unable to advertise our service but we are now trying to make sure that anyone in the area who is visually impaired and can no longer read the local news, is aware of our service – which is entirely free. (Our funding comes from donations or special fund-raising efforts.) So if you know of anyone who might benefit from the Journal please have a word with them and invite them to give me a call on 01626 821034. I will be happy to talk to them about the service and tell them more about it. Thank you. Brian Smith Chairman, Dyrons Journal PS: If you would be interested in reading for the Journal or helping with administration, please give me a call. Bude resident, Martin Dorey, started the movement a couple of years ago after becoming frustrated by the amount of litter on our beautiful south west beaches. His aim was to encourage visitors and locals to take pride in their surroundings, raise awareness of the litter problem and to be proactive in dealing with the detritus. The solution was a very simple idea - place large A frame boards, with litterpickers, at various beachside locations and ask people to take 2 minutes of their day to get involved and litter pick the beach. By only asking for 2 minutes of their time it wasn’t a massive intrusion on their day, but, with thousands of people visiting the beaches, all of those 2 minutes would soon add up. The campaign has been running for a couple of years now and is growing in success and fame. People from all over the world are now taking part in the #2 minute beach clean project and are posting their litter picking pictures to social media sites to highlight the problem of litter on a world wide scale. Six new A frame boards have been designed and built especially for Dartmoor and will be put out in strategic locations over most weekends and through the school holidays. Litterpickers and bags are provided with the boards. Look out for them at “honeypot” sites such as Spitchwick, Cadover Bridge, Roborough Down, Haytor, Dartmeet, Meldon, Burrator Reservoir and Postbridge and join us in keeping Dartmoor litter free. The siting of the boards will be managed by the Ranger team, supported by voluntary wardens and volunteers and our countryside partners such as the National Trust and South West Lakes Trust. The boards will be “mobile” and will also be used as part of organised events on the moor. So if you are visiting the moor, or live or work on Dartmoor and you come across one of these boards please get involved, do your bit and post your pictures to Instagram or twitter tagged with #2minutelitterpick & #lovedartmoor. Let’s make Dartmoor, and ultimately Great Britain, a cleaner, safer and prettier environment for all to enjoy. 16 To advertise in September is Macmillans 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning' with the whole nation taking part. Naturally Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Group couldn't let this huge event pass without joining in; cake is in our DNA! So we will be holding a coffee morning at St.Andrew’s Church Hall, Ashburton on Saturday 24th September from 09:00 - 12:00, please come and join us for a tea, a coffee and a slice of something nice. We know that there will be some of you holding coffee mornings at work or home during the week to raise funds for Macmillan, and we would love to hear from anyone who is planning an event, it would be great to see how much is raised in the area. In fact, if anyone is doing anything to raise money for Macmillan, please get in touch and let us know, and we can help with publicity, bunting, balloons, collecting boxes and a whole range of other useful stuff. Talking of other events; last month two of our members took part in big events to raise funds for Macmillan. Mandy Huntley from Buckfastleigh walked 22 miles of the 'Jurassic Coast' and raised a fantastic £611 and Susanne Westgate from Ashburton ran a 10K event in London and raised a total of £1032. Well done and a huge thank you to both of you - put your feet up, you deserve it! Just a quick mention of an event coming up in November: on Saturday 26th we have a concert in St. Lawrence Chapel with local musician Si Barron whose beautiful guitar playing has won praise from many quarters, this will be a lovely way to spend an evening before Christmas is upon us! Make a date in your diary. If you would like to help your local group, or if you have any events which you would like to let us know about, you can contact me on 01364 653500, or find Ashburton and Buckfastleigh Macmillan Fundraising Group on Facebook. Holne: 2 Thefts (1 theft of a motor vehicle, 1 theft from a motor vehicle). Scorriton: 1 Theft. Dean Prior: 1 Driving over legal limit (A38) Incidents of note: The Buckfastleigh Lamb Pie day took place in July and though a few incidents were reported to the Police the event was an overall success. Early on in the evening a male was sectioned under the mental health act after reports of anti social behaviour in the town, and further into the event a male was arrested for a public order offence in Victoria Car Park. Unfortunately one report of criminal damage was received by the Police after a window was broken in the town. House to house enquiries have been completed with a negative result and potential witnesses have been spoken to, enquiries are still ongoing; if any one has any further information please call 101 quoting CR/050398/16. Police are also investigating a theft from Boots whereby £1300 worth of goods was stolen. The offender has been captured on CCTV committing the offence and we are currently tracking this person to ascertain their whereabouts. Furthermore Police were seeking a 21-year-old man who was wanted for a breach of an electronic tagging order. Dennis Ham from Buckfastleigh was wanted by Police, he has since been arrested and is due to be sentenced. We are appealing for information after a vehicle in Buckfastleigh was smeared with faeces. The disgusting mess was placed all over the windscreen and bonnet of the vehicle on Friday 29th July. Officers confirmed that there had been no lines of enquiry as yet, but described the vandalism as ‘very concerning behaviour’. We would hope in future that any resident who has an issue with another would act in a more mature and respectful way. Anyone with information in relation to this incident can contact the police on 101 and quote log 722 29/7. 18 To advertise in PC 3023 Young Neighbourhood Beat Manager, Buckfastleigh PCSO 30720 Yates Police Community Support Officer, Buckfastleigh THE VALIANT SOLDIER MUSEUM AND TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE Open from Friday 25th March until Saturday 29th October: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 12.30 - 4.30pm Wednesday and Saturday 10.30am - 4.30pm Bank Holiday Sundays 12.30 - 4.30pm (Last entry 4.00pm) Admission: Adults £5.00, Children £3.00, Seniors £4.50, Family Ticket (2 adults and up to 2 children) £12.00 (includes all of museum). These will be held on: Monday and Thursday afternoons from Monday 19th September As the autumn sets in and winter approaches, it’s time for those at greatest risk from flu to protect themselves and their families, and get flu safe with a free flu jab. Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications. Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week. However, flu can be more severe in certain people, such as: • anyone aged 65 and over • pregnant women • children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or respiratory disease) • children and adults with weakened immune systems Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it’s recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to protect them. The injected flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS annually to: • adults over the age of 18 at risk of flu (including everyone aged 65 and over) • pregnant women • children aged six months to two years at risk of flu Jill Elliott, who runs the Tea Stall at Tuckers Local Produce Market, as well as selling a range of Traidcraft items and fairly traded goods, points out that in the last few months she has increased the range of ‘Traidcraft’ gift items with a representative selection from across the range. The extended range on display is changed frequently as there is only limited space Catalogues are available and anything you need that is not on display can be obtained within a few days. Profits go to BUCKFASTLEIGH METHODIST CHURCH. Please call the surgery on 01364 642534 to book an appointment. In what will be a global showpiece for the communities and villages in and around South Devon, millions will watch the events unfold with recorded highlights on ITV4 and live on the new Bike channel. In the lead up to the race, a week-long ‘carnival of cycling’ is planned in the communities in and around Haytor, as Dartmoor sets the stage for the Tour of Britain’s (ToB) Devon stage finale. And this year the Dartmoor stage promises to be thrilling, with race director Mick Bennett calling the notorious hill climb, ‘one of the toughest’ of the whole race. After a year’s hiatus the tour is back in Teignbridge with a bang, with 10 World Tour teams, comprising of 120 cyclists, including the teams of British favourites Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish’s (Team WIGGINS and Team Dimension Data respectively) racing on Devon’s roads. Riders will battle it out through 95 miles of Devon countryside, taking in Ottery St Mary, Honiton, Willand, Tiverton, Crediton, Moretonhampstead, Chudleigh and Bovey Tracey on the way. The stage includes 3,000 metres of climbing and fast descents on Devon’s narrow roads, including the race’s only summit finish this year, a legburning six kilometre ascent of Haytor. Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways with responsibility for cycling, said: “The Devon stage is only 150km long (93miles) but there is barely a mile of flat terrain with climbs totalling 3,101metres. It’s sure to be one of the most thrilling stages.” The stage is being hosted by Devon County Council and partners East Devon District Council, Sidmouth Town Council, Teignbridge District Council and Dartmoor National Park. And they have worked with local groups to produce an array of cycling-themed 30 To advertise in events to whet the appetites of cycling enthusiasts and peak the interest of casual visitors who can watch the race at Haytor or from any one of our great market towns and villages on the route. On race day Haytor will be buzzing and crowds can watch the excitement unfold on the big screens in the Tour of Britain Promotional zone in the Middle Car Park, and enjoy the very best local food and drink and a range of stalls and entertainment. Visitors can pit themselves against the top cyclists by using one of the static bikes on offer. Spectators will also have the chance to visit the team coaches and cheer on the champions of tomorrow as schools compete along the final 1km in advance of the Tour. Teignbridge District Council’s Leader Cllr Jeremy Christophers said: “This is a flagship event on the Teignbridge calendar and there will be a special welcome to embrace the cycling community. It’s sure to be a dramatic stage finish on top of Haytor and evokes fantastic memories of 2013 when crowds gathered in their thousands to cheer on cycling’s biggest names that included Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish.” For those wanting to test themselves on this year’s Tour route Mid Devon Cycling Club are organising a bus on September 18 to take riders to Sidmouth and then leading rides to the finish with tea and cake at Ullacombe Farm Shop at Haytor.
